thank you, do you have any other suggestion for the motherboard? I'm not looking for overclocking. This Aorus MB is going for 79$ on sale right now, anything else would be better for the price?
At that price point it's a trade-off for functionality. Look for convenience, Gigabit-Ethernet, WiFi, USB3-ports, Thunderbolt, eSATA, updated Audio-Chips/Audio ports.
Factor the equipment in that you want to connect and make sure you can do it, if not, look for a different one.

What's the best CPU I can get under $400 and that's actually available? I was looking at the i7 10700kf
If you live near a microcenter you can get the 10850k for $389, they are also selling the 10700k for $319.
Maybe you can get Best Buy to price match as well, if you are out of area.

Unfortunately, I don't.

My only concern with the Intel platform is the lack of PCI-E 4. Will this be a potential bottleneck in, say, 3 years time if I were to upgrade the GPU>

The boards are PCI-4 ready for rocket lake CPUs, if you choose to get those cpus down the line. To be fair, PCI 5.0 and DDR5 is coming out next year with Alder Lake and Zen 4 so what we are talking about will be outdated anyway.

It’s fairly doable to get a 5600X.
Well, I've tried since launch, never any stock when I check. Should be clear, this is a gift for Christmas. So, not a whole lot of time left.

Yeah, kinda defeats the point if you gotta upgrade the CPU to use an existing feature on the motherboard. Probably not even the latest CPUs that will be available at that time either.

Doesn't sound like I have a choice, though.

They have the wiring for pci 4.0 but the bandwidth is coming from the CPU. Rocket Lake was suppose to be out now but Intel gonna Intel. Looking at Ryzen lineup the price increasing plus the stock issues, Intel looks pretty good because of the price drops in the States right now. I don't think Ryzen stock is going to improve, around when b550 board were coming out I was thinking about getting another PC with 3100x because it was a 99 dollar CPU and it was pretty much never available, plus the lockdowns I wasn't going to a store. I think 2021 is not going to fair better; spending is still going to be high and silcon demand is going to laptops more than ever.

Also tbh I think AMD will release a lower clocked 8 core CPU sometime next year for 50 bucks less to compete with rocket-lake, if you can wait.

Really can't, it's a PC build for my little brother and he needs it soon. Gonna either bite the bullet and get the either a 3700x or 10700k, probably.

I would recommend the 3700x coupled with a x570 or b550 board, because down the line your brother could get a 16 core cpu when it drops in price. It's going to be a while before pci 4.0 is needed for GPUs and the 1 TB pci 4.0 ssd are looking good right now so he'll see a benefit there.

Quick question for everybody. Anybody go through the hassle of trying to tune their Ryzen memory with the dram calculator? I can't finish my PC just yet until I get my final video card but I can always adjust things like the ram. When I watch tech tubbers they make it sound like it's totally worth it but when you read reddit they make it sound as though most of the time your machine just hangs so use XMP settings.

So it looks like ryzen 5 2600 is bottlenecking my RX6800 after all (see this post: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/cyberpunk-2077-pc-settings-performance.1581103/page-5#post-261505585)

Of course new ryzen CPUs are not available. At the moment my B450 does not support them, but maybe it will next year. 5600X seems the most recommended choice now, but even if it was I am not sure I'd be able to use it right now.

Would it be a big mistake to buy Ryzen 7 3800X, or 3700X now? Price is OK and it is available. 3800X is not much more expensive than 3700X.

How much of an improvement would it be to replace mine current CPU with one of those?

Is it worth upgrading from a 3600 to a 5800x? I'll sell the 3600 but will probably need to add another £250 on top.

Will the Noctua U12S that I currently use for the 3600 be enough of a cooler for the 5800x?

Figured I'd post my newest build since I finally got around to snapping some photos of it.

TrdcML8.jpg

D0BmOQj.jpg

Ryzen 5900x
EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3
64GB 3200 Ram
MSI Tomahawk x570
1TB Sabrent gen4 M.2
2x 1TB Samsung 860 Evo SSDs
6TB Western Digital HDD
6x Corsair QL 120 Fans
Corsair H100i Platinum Cooler

I believe that covers the majority of it.

Thing is great though. Having no issues running Cyberpunk completely maxed out 80+/1440p.

Apologies if those images are huge.

This was the day after I got my new system to post and I dumped coolant on the mobo. On the bright side I got to really dial in the cable management and re-route a lot of clutter. The amount of room to work in this case is really nice. The rear panel has almost 2" of clearance as does the GPU.

YCQ20vO.jpg

I got everything put back together after my accident and running super reliable. I dumped about half my AIO's coolant directly onto the mobo but it was clear-coated properly with a matte clear so nothing soaked in. I had my airbrush compressor primed and ready so I was able to blow everything out quickly. I haven't had any issues since and have everything set up properly now. Hopefully I don't have to open the side panel again for a while other than odds and ends.

Was looking to go overboard on an X570/R9 5900X but pricing/availability here are both pretty dumb. Shipping from the US is up to a month on a lot of stuff, more if it goes through Ontario. My PC was also completely dead so I couldn't really wait a month since I have games to play. Being a gaming-only box with a 4K panel capped at 60Hz I really wasn't even CPU bottlenecked with the i7-5820K yet and I don't really need 12 cores for 4K/60 gaming so I decided on a temporary solution that will probably end up not being temporary based on how it's running so far, but we'll see. I ended up getting an i5-10600K for around the same price as an R5 3500X during black Friday sales and found a Z490 board that matched my GPU for $100 off as well. In the end I grabbed two M.2 drives super cheap as well as the mobo and the CPU for about what I was going to pay for the CPU alone.

I replaced the 280mm Corsair Hydro cooler I broke with a 420mm Arctic AIO. This rad is thicc. Even with a full OC on the 10600K I dropped my max CPU temps below the temps I was seeing on the 5820K with a moderate OC using the 240mm AIO. The 4 200mm case fans idle at just 350RPM but keep case temps sub-30C when playing. The setup for the intake is push/pull but with a gap so when the CPU fans are idle the 200mm case fans can vent into the lower case keeping it pressurized. I rarely have to dust inside this case, just blow out the front filter and PSU side basement filter occasionally. Considering the amount of vents in this case, cleaning has been a breeze.
3oD16Rk.jpg

I also revised my exterior mount for the GPU. I cut out the hex grating behind the rear 140mm case fan and mounted the AIO for the GPU directly in line with it leaving a 1" gap. It's push/pull this way, but when the GPU is not in use the case fan can still vent without obstruction. My max GPU temps are about the same as max CPU temps. Doom Eternal was running at 45C at 4K/60 at max settings and Horizon 4 was about the same. Since Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't release until after Christmas I'll have to wait until then to see how that runs in this setup.

New cooler has no lighting at all but the sleeves match the carbon fiber motif and the fans are decent with high static pressure, so the rear fan looks a bit out of place now with the blue pads. I'm building a second system where I can use all three blue 140mm fans and will replace it with a fan with a higher CFM later. I also need better sleeving for the GPU AIO to match the CPU cables. When I do that I'll replace the GPU radiator with the 240mm radiator from the pump I broke. That will give me an opportunity to include in-line fill points to the loop. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it came out and how it's running given how little it cost to do. I also managed to get the ram I thought my previous mobo had fried running properly in this mobo, not sure why my old mobo wouldn't accept it in the same slots the new sticks worked in, but I'm up to 64GB now which is entirely unnecessary but whatever, the DIMM slots look nice filled out and match the cables. The CPU AIO cables took little effort to retrain and fell perfectly in-line after a day.

The LEDs get brighter as they ramp up. At idle the lights are pretty dim and the fans all spin slow enough my camera caught them. At full send it's pretty bright.
FDbJPpm.jpg

Not that I see any of it anyway :messenger_grinning_sweat: Hopefully I'll be moving it into a new space in the house early next year where it's a little more visible.

Greetings PC folks.

It’s been 7 years since I’ve upgraded the rig overall, upgraded the GPU to a 1070 last year or the year before (I honestly forgot).

Playing Cyberpunk now and it finally looks like I need to upgrade the rig for the next generation of gaming, but I’ve been out of the game for a good minute so I’m coming back sort of blind.

I have an AOC 23” 144hz 1080p monitor, I love it and don’t want to upgrade from it right now so ideally I’m building for 1080/144(or as close as possible).

I know my CPU (3570k @ 4.4) is on thin legs now, but the question is do I upgrade now or wait for Zen 4/latest Intel if they do release next year?

I have a list of all the other parts I’ll add to the new rig, but I’m stuck debating on the CPU path moving forward.

You probably don't have much of a choice but to wait now anyway. The newer video cards(Nvidia 3000 series and AMD 6000 series) are in very short supply and that's made supply of older video cards pretty sparse too.(I'm still trying to get one.) We're seeing the same thing with AMD cpus. The 5000 series are non-existent and that has pushed 3000 series to MSRP when even a couple of months ago you could get deals on 3700x, 3800x, and 3800xt. Intel stuff isn't too hard to get right now though. At least on NewEgg you can get stuff like the 10700k.(Occasionally as part of a deal.) I guess it depends if you already have the video card you want to use and are looking to go intel. (Supposedly the new intel chips are coming out in the next few months, who knows how true that is. Hopefully since intel makes their own chips they won't have supply issues like AMD and NVidia.)

Keep your eyes peeled around Boxing Day and New Years for sales and bundles. As the new stuff is already out for AMD, Intel is a tough sell right now since their marketing is non-existent and the Rocket Lake stuff isn't out until March, the current Comet Lake chips and Zen 2 CPUs are selling cheaper and are still easier to find at reasonable prices.

I got a bunch of new parts and saved almost $400 over the regular asking prices on Black Firday. New/better stuff is releasing all the time, but better performance and the price you pay for it isn't always linear.

If you can get a CPU/mobo combo that performs really well in gaming right now, it will still perform really well for a while. My old i7-5820K was still not bottlenecking my 2080ti at 4K/60, and running games unlocked at 1440p 144Hz was not an issue for it either, I would have gladly waited until it was bottlenecking me but I suffered a mobo failure which forced me to pull the trigger sooner. I had originally planned on replacing it after two years thinking a 6 Core CPU wouldn't be enough. 5 years later I think a 6 Core CPU is perfectly capable of handling games. While I don't have a crystal ball, I have a feeling it will stay that way for a while.

A lot of the improvements don't always scale 1-1 either. Compare the top-end Gen 4 NVMe SSD load times in games to even a budget Gen 3 NVMe and you'll see the some very expensive milliseconds. Compare Gen 3 NVMe SSDs to SATA and while there is a bigger difference measured in actual seconds, the price difference is much higher than the performance difference.

If you're aiming for 1080p/144fps, you're not going to be CPU bound with even "lower end" CPUs. The i5-10600K I just got for a song during Black Friday will run anything at 200+ fps with the framerate unlocked at 1080p. In your case, if it's a machine you'll use for gaming only, you don't need a $700 CPU to run anything, let alone at 1080p/144fps. I'd say if you want a gaming PC that will for sure be more than competent for another five years with no upgrades, aim middle of the road with your CPU/mobo, and concentrate on the GPU.

I've seen a lot of Intel 10/mobo and Ryzen/mobo combo deals. Also look for "last call" deals coming up. With the newest AMD stuff becoming easier to get and Intel Comet Lake on the way out you'll start to see old inventory getting let go for less. You just need to dig around a bit to find the deals. Keep local shops in mind especially, they'll do combos to get people in the door hoping to upsell them on higher-end hardware.

even with new cpu next year, the shortages will probably happen again. so you are looking at anothe 18 months off from now.
because every one is looking to tsmc to build their processors.
intel used to build their own cpu, but they are out of action for now,

imo next month ryzen 5000 cpu should see more stocks. It depends if you want a new cpu next month or two, or you dont mind waiting another 16 months later. 🤷‍♀️

If you are happy at 1080p/144hz then i think just get the best CPU+GPU combo you can afford now. You will be fine targeting that resolution for a long time, assuming you can afford good components.

Guys, I tried to seek for helpo in several places, including AMD subreddits, but so far no success. Seems my problem could be unique, I don't know....

Long story short, after replacing RX580 with RX6800 xmp profile for my DDR4 stopped to work. When I turn it on, the computer cannot boot so it resets to the default frequency. As a result I am using memory @2400 mhz, which I think hurts my CPU performance. So before changing any hardware (which could mean even the whole thing with CPU, mobo and DDR4...) I would really like to understand what is going on. And if I can fix this.

I have updated BIOS and cleared cmos, none of this helped at all.

Also, right after the bios restore it boots up with working led on gpu. Then after I set up bios and boot again, led is not working any more. I think it was also similar wright after the swap. I do not care about led. But it kinda seems to show the gpu and mobo do not like each other?

System config: Mobo MSi b450 tomahawk (also with the most recent bios) Cpu Ryzen 5 2600 DDR4 2x8 GB hyperX predator. GPU asus tuf gaming rx6800

I guess I'll just chime in make sure it's in the right slots as the most basic thing to check.(DIMMA2 and DIMMB2.) I've heard of weird behavior if you don't follow the manual on that. Other than that I've got nothing.

I followed the manual when building this pc, and it worked fine for a year.... It just stopped after the gpu swap. I did not touch anything apart from some cable and ssd placement re-arrangement. So it is weird. I never heard gpu has anything to do with this but I know very little about this stuff.

I don't know then. I guess try reseating the memory since I guess something could have gotten knocked a little loose when you pushed in the video card. Easy enough to try.

So 'lo and behold I FINALLY secured an RTX card at MSRP. I've been trying since they launched with no dice. It'll be here by Christmas Eve so now I've paused actually playing games and begun actually assembling all the components I've had in boxes since September.

The only issue is I'm a little worried about power consumption. Anyone else rocking an absolute top shelf PC? I went with an 850w PSU assuming that would be enough headroom for the 3080 I was considering in September but now I'm not so sure since things didn't go according to plan. Is 850w enough for a 10900KF/AIO and a 3090? I'd like enough headroom to slap in another SSD and maybe more RAM.

Playing CP2077 has got me thinking I need to upgrade my CPU. Currently I have a i79700k paired with a rtx 3090.

Unfortunately I realized I'll need to upgrade my mobo as well depending on which CPU I go with.

I mean if you have a 3090 theres only one real CPU option - the 10900. Anything short of that will absolutely hold that GPU back and even the 10900 will probably hold it back with new releases down the line.

I will. I will also swap the modules for the good measure.

When everything is working as it is supposed to, building your own pc is like big lego (though with the size of those gpus I see more similarities with a car repair), but in situations like this I hate it.

Yeah I've run those metrics but they don't take into account other factors. FYI that's the wrong GPU though.

Ah sorry thought 3080 here's a 3090

https://wccftech.com/review/nvidia-...pere-founders-edition-review-a-true-bfgpu/14/

Honestly unless u heavily oc both i don't think u will hit 850w even with those unless you heavily oc both of them. I would try it out. U could also buy one of those watt meters where u plug your PC in with those displays. I got one here myself its a eye opener on what your stuff actually uses.

Seems to indeed hover around the 500-600 in most games with 700w spikes. so yea 850 quality one that's not to old will do and that's with a heavy oced version on top of it.

I might actually do this. I'm not sure yet. I didn't plan to get the "stupid" GPU - I wanted a 3080 - but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. I think I'm going to sink another couple hundred into this build and just make it completely ridiculous. I've never had a top %.0001 build before.

Here's my nearly finished build I've been slowly putting together since July.

Phanteks Enthoo 719

hpVhbB2.jpg

Housing:

Asus Thor 850W PSU

Bunch of rads (4 by 120, 3 by 120 and a 2 by 120), complete overkill but I didn't care it was a bucket list build (never done a custom loop build, probably won't again)
Phanteks Res
Phanteks Distro
Alphacool Pro fittings
Phanteks Block
Phanteks MP120 Fans
Phanteks Halo Lux RGB frames

Asus Crosshair 8 Hero WIFI
AMD Ryzen 5950X
64 GB TForce 8Pack Edition 3600 CAS16 DDR4 RAM
1TB Firecuda 520 Gen 4 NVME
2TB Firecude 510 SATA SSD
Custom PSU and GPU cabling

And a MSI Gaming 1660 Super!!!

I custom sleeved and pinned the pump to run entirely off the board and get rid of the unsightly bare cabling.

I'm still waiting on a Asus ROG 3090 OC and Phanteks G30 block for it to finish it off. I've left the GPU power cables in the case as it's utterly ridiculous cable management wise and it's not worth removing.

I need to drain the system and give it a flush clean through when the GPU arrives as it's been sat a while so a bit of shit has built up in the pipes and has left crud in the res.

Up and running. Shit quality as my phone is ancient now and doesn't like RGB as much as me.

Runs whisper quiet. Fans are on a low 600rpm curve based on liquid temp (never gets above about 7c delta). Pump runs at 34% constant (sweet spot for no no noise I've found). Getting about 35c CPU temp (die average) at idle and about 55c fully loaded in Prime95. PBO enabled, it hits about 82c but has each core running great boost.

I know the feeling, trying to get my hands on a GPU already for a month now no dice. Almost thinking about just pulling the trigger on a 3090 myself as that's the only one still half gainable here. But kinda waiting myself on a cheaper version or the next model really. we will see tho.

G Garibaldi that's a pretty build! Thank you so much for sharing. I love seeing these!

I'd also like to complement you on a nice, reserved case selection. It seems like so many builds still look like muscle cars.

Also: you're a braver man than me. Even AIOs make me nervous. Purely due to one mishap on my part and thousands of anecdotes I've read I will never, ever water-cool a pc ever again.

I hope you enjoy it.

Playing CP2077 has got me thinking I need to upgrade my CPU. Currently I have a i79700k paired with a rtx 3090.

Unfortunately I realized I'll need to upgrade my mobo as well depending on which CPU I go with.

That's a lot of money for a little fps. Are you overclocked at all? What resolution/fps are you trying to hit? You're not going to see much in terms of gains/dollar upgrading a 9700K to a current CPU.

If you're set on it anyways, I'd really wait it out and check out post-Christmas deals. Black Friday had some really cheap deals and combo deals on mobo/cpu combos and I expect Boxing day/New years deals will be similar.

Honestly I'm just a bit frustrated with how the fps dips pretty drastically when driving through the city. It's more than likely something they could fix with more optimizations through a patch.

I currently use a 38" 1440p ultrawide monitor, for CP2077 I'd love for it to simply stay above 60fps which it does 90% of the time. It's those moments when I drive through the city and its densely populated that it'll suddenly drop to the mid 40's.

G Garibaldi that build looks awfully fancy for a 1660! You plan to upgrade soon or just keep rockin' 1080p for awhile?

Yeah, I had to just grab a cheap (ish) card to see me through as my 3090 is never coming I think. I'm gonna drop the 1660 into a ITX build once it turns up with it's block. Use that for work, The poor 1660 is currently stuggling away running my 3840 by 1600 ultrawide. Bless it, it's a bloody good little card. Constantly at 99% though.

Cheer man. Yeah, to be honest, it was a proper voyage of discovery. I've build loads of air cooled pcs but just fancied a balls out custom build. I'd definitely not bother again. It's so expensive and no matter how much planning you do, something it just too tight or angled oddly. I was caking it the first few days of it running, but it seems ok so far. I pressure tested it all for a good 12 hours before throwing the liquid in so it should in theory be fine.

Those things are little beasts and I will always have respect for 'em. If multi-GPU implementation had actually panned out the way nVidia wanted it to those things would be awesome (edit: even more awesome). 4x 1660 Ti builds etc.

My first instinct is a power supply issue. The GPU should have no bearing on how stable the RAM is, unless of course, the power delivery is not enough to feed the RAM anymore.
