School I work at is forcing k-8 back to in person

You will be okay. I've been working through this entire pandemic. I've been around people with Covid. I may have gotten it in March, but don't know for sure because I couldn't get tested due to low amount of testing in my state. Just wear a mask and wear it correctly. Hopefully the school has students wearing masks as well. Everyone I know who has gotten it survived. Some said it felt like they had a really bad flu and others said they just had a bad headache that week.
My work tracks all employees who test positive. We’ve had 1300 or so people test positive (it’s a large hospital system). 1 person died and he was a man with extensive health history.

Awwww. Poor baby.

And you actually think most teachers don’t want to go back to in-person instruction right away? Vaccine or not?

My wife is a teacher and our county has been virtual the whole year and the teachers fucking hate it. The whole year has been a mammoth sized waste of time. No one is truly learning. They cannot WAIT to get back to in-person.

Maybe your district has come to its senses and realized how stupid this whole overreaction has been.

And subs won’t want to work? WTF? I was a sub for 3 years. I’d be thrilled with all extra days I’d be getting. Not everybody is a do-nothing union scrub like you.

You get no sympathy points from me. Millions have had to go work every day facing these problems. So shut the fuck up and do your job.

You are right about one thing though: unions are useless.
Majority of teachers in my division which is the largest in the city like remote learning because it gives us more options for instruction, also we don't have to be by 30+ kids who are potential carriers

also with remote learning I've had students actually thrive on it esp because i can give them that 1on 1 time they need via Google meets to make sure they comprehend the material

false, in my province subs arent coming in to work because they don't feel safe. We have a lack of subs period in fact one division is asking people with experince in any area even with no education degree to sign up to sub. Most subs are sitting so home collecting EI right now and will be prob for the rest of the school year because it can roughly last an average of 6/9 months depending on hours works the previous 365 days. For highschool much like my friend who isn't remote learning has to put a sick day and select no sub because they don't even have enough to cover elementary which is important, and then staff throughout the school are pulled and have to miss their preps etc to cover classes they shouldn't be.

Remote learning is generally trash. I’m sure teachers like it because it easy. But it’s garbage. Numerous studies have demonstrated this.

k-8 is probably pushing it, since i remember parties in junior high, but in my son's k-5 elementary school, we had no cases until just a couple of weeks ago when we got 2 cases back to back.

schools have done a great job containing the virus and you dont really need to worry about contracting it there. i regret doing e-learing for my son and i wish they let me change it to in school next year but they wont because apparently the deadline has passed and they cant make any exceptions.

I literally don’t get it. For the past year the data has been, based on the number of cases per 10k in our county. And this meant no in person school.

We get an email from our superintendent saying after break we are moving to an in person model.

Uh what? The cases in our county are currently higher than they have ever been. Many people are going out of town and meeting family, increasing the risk of a huge spike right when we go back to school.

We don’t get hazard pay or a vaccine and we are literally around thousands of potential carriers every day.

The rationale they are pushing now is that children don’t contract or suffer severe symptoms. You know the stuff we have known about this ENTIRE pandemic. Suddenly now we make new rules about this?

WTF is going on? Why is there some huge push to make people go in person for the last 3 months of school? Like why? What changed?

My union is literally useless (as they typically are aside from taking my money) and I have zero support from administrators. Teachers I work with are literally crying on zoom calls about how they think it’s super dangerous.

WTF is going on? I’m actual confused and can’t believe these liberal “believe in science and listen to the data” people are pushing this.

It takes ONE teacher getting sick to decimate an entire school. And trust me when I say there are no substitute teachers willing to risk death for less money than a garbage man makes.

But clearly I’m just the crazy one who is over worried 💁‍♂️
Dude I thought you were a gardener or something. Crazy.

Maybe read the article first

So this is another article about two people, a mother and daughter, who got covid outside of school and died. While no one disputes the sadness of that situation, I fail to see what this has to do with schools being open. They didn’t get sick at school. They got sick over Thanksgiving, likely at a family get-together.
You can get sick at school. That's the point

You can get sick if you're a human on earth. The flu kills way more kids than covid and we don't close schools for bad strains.

Risk is inherent to life. "If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs."

If you think remote learning is easy you're a fucking moron. If anything its harder because you dont have the kids their infront of you and need to upload stuff constantly for studdnts instead of giving physical resources and if someone has more paperback copies of things they have to scan everything indvidually than photo
Copy etc

and like I stated though its harder ive found for my school the kids are actually working more, handing in more work and complete work on time. Maybe the parents need to do their fucking job and monitor their kids and make sure their work is being done.

Covid is easily more spreadable than the flu and also having problems of leaving people
Asymptomatic And infecting people at risk

Covid has killed 1.7 million globally in a year, what flu global deaths last year?

2020's death totals are about what 2019's were.
I'm not worried about it as I'm a healthy young person without a vitamin D deficiency.

There's something to be said for testing for C19 in orders of magnitude more than we've ever tested for anything else.
I wonder what seasonal flu and h1n1 would have looked like with similar testing and media panic.

Schools that have opened have fared well because they're acutely aware of the risks and because the people in them are largely young and healthy.

Parents have jobs, asshole. Especially single ones. Those people can’t be doing half of yours too. The idea that you are whining about going to work while many those people have been for months is fun though. The entitled nature of many teachers never ceases to fascinate me.

As for your anecdote about your students learning more, I’ll have to weigh that against the mounting evidence that it’s terrible. You’re a teacher, so you know. Science and data.

Congratulations you have a job, when you get home its also your JOB to check in on your kids and make sure that they have what they need and yes dare I say doing their work. If you cant manage that thne maybe people shouldnt be parents to begin with. Shut up, nut up and start acting like a parent, this is why kids these days are so fucked up. Im still here because parents cant do their jobs.

where was I whining about going to work? Im laying out facts as an actual teacher, shats your profession again, are you in the teaching field? No, I know that I am, got the shirt to prove it.

Come to my job and teach 42 kids in a class room, I dare you, bet you wouldn't last 3 minutes. Do I want time off? No, Do i want to feel SAFE in my workng environment when I could be surrounded by 42 kids in a class that cant socially distance properly because we dont have the staff, funding or resources? Your damn right I do

I don’t see very much data in those articles. I see more anecdotes. You know the difference right? The data isn’t ambiguous. Remote learning is a terrible substitute for what we actually pay you for, assuming you work in a public school. Finding a couple of kids to interview who like it doesn’t really change the fact that for the vast majority of children, this is not working.
My job is significantly higher stress. I deal with dying people every day at work. It’s not something I can do from my kitchen. Of course your job isn’t either despite you insisting that it is.
