Sony Pictures is developing 3 movies and 7 TV shows based on PlayStation games

Sony Pictures, the TV and film production arm of the Sony Corporation, is seemingly working on more than just Uncharted.

Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra told CNBC (via MediaPost) that the studio is working on three movies and seven TV shows, all based on PlayStation’s video game content.

According to Vinciquerra, Sony will be relying more on its own brands going forward. “We have no specific plan yet, but we have a program within the company called One Sony,” he explained.

“You’ll be seeing a lot more integration of Sony companies together.”

Sony, of course, solidified this commitment last year with the establishment of PlayStation Productions, a division designed to adapt PlayStation’s various IPs into film and television. PlayStation Productions was led by Shawn Layden at the time, and you’ll likely see its logo in the upcoming Uncharted movie.

Yeah, sure, why not.

This seems like an actual proper effort to transition their ip's into a different form of media, so I'll keep myself optimistic.

Best to just create the huge distinction that the movies and the games are two very separate things, and both should will likely not be completely 1:1 to each other much like book movie adaptations or comic book movie adaptations.

Bout time they did this, now you don't need to make a 20 hour game into a 2 hour movie just make a movie based on the game like some small story that you can wrap up in 2 hours. If you want to cover a 40 hour game make it a tv show that has several seasons. There needed to be more synergy between games, cartoons, movies, toys, and comics promotion. I suck at fighting games but I've watched nearly every fighting game movie and several cartoons.

UPS documentary narrated by Kojima is a shoe in for an Emmy.

I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner. Unlike MS, they have the infrastructure to actually make movies based on their games internally.

Killzone film and series with toxic planet and WW1 atmosphere of the two first games!

And gimme a proper reboot without the colorful shity planets, in true Helghan again, and/or at least K2 remaster with the multiplayer mechanics untouched.
Edit: that's for Sony WWS of course.

Good. Tapping into a different medium with a high-quality show or movie will bring more people into the gaming industry.

This means better sales, which leads to better and bigger games for us.

It'll be like superhero movies where some studio will crack the formula (i.e marvel) and it'll be a gold rush of folks buying movie rights to games.

Like, why the fuck isn't there a Bioshock movie? Come on!

Deca-failure!

Seriously though, hopefully these will turn out good, would be nice to have another good games-TV series/Movie to add to the small list of good adaptations that have happened over the last 40 years or so. I think they are starting to understand games a bit more and what people like about them.

I know videogame to film transitions have been rocky but I hope for some really cool stuff. It'd be insane if we got a real good adaptation of Ghosts of Tsushima and God of War
I can see this ending with Ghost of Tsushima with Tom cruise and god of war with Chris Hemsworth as kratos /s

Another dumb move by Jimbo. Instead of investing in SCEJ.... 🤷‍♀️

1 or 2 trial by fire shows is ok. But this many?

Shows based on videogames have never worked! And i dont see Sony pictures, the execs running that business unit, have another idea or talent to make them work!

This is burning away money and killing your game reputation. Jiiimbooo!

You really fell flat there considering this was put into place by Shawn Layden.

Maybe 1 or 2, doubt Shawn doesn't know too many cooks are a spoiler.

If you seen how sony pictures is run, the excess is probably from them after Shawn left

Of course not all of them but the whole Playstation Production branch was started under his leadership.

I don't get all the hate. If they are successful, which is totally possible, this could lead to higher sales for future and existing games. leading to more money towards game development.

I personally would love shows or movies based in lots of playstation properties. I'm super excited for the last of us hbo show. As well as the uncharted movie.

Now let's get an R rated Resistance movie off the ground. Make it really gritty and violent.

As long as it doesn't affect game development, by trying to make the movies/shows more important, then I'm happy with this. Dont want the games designed around them.

Do it how MCU does it. The games are the driving factor. And the movies and TV shows supplement them, like how Disney plus shows supplement the mcu movies.

Interesting that PlayStation Productions is so eager to go. (Sony farmed out its franchises before, in the CG-movie craze a few years ago, but only Heavenly Sword and Ratchet came out before that ended.) I wonder which franchises will end up where, and how far into the archives they'll dig for brands?

Here's the known slate so far:

  • Uncharted (Movie, 2021)
  • ?
  • ?
  • Twisted Metal (Series, Unknown Date)
  • The Last of Us (Series, Unknown Date)
  • Sly Cooper (Series, still happening?)
  • ?

They're basically shit. I say this as a really picky movie buff, generally game to movie conversions seem to be made to sell games with much less thought on a solid theatrical product.

Resident Evil. The first one sorta passes, but the others are terrible.
Doom?... parts feel ripped off or stolen from other works. But hey, I think the Rock is in it so...
Monster Hunter. *sigh* I'll buy it but again, it already looks like a cash in to sell more games with a plot that feels like a kindergartener came up with it.

I always watch movies based on games, even the terrible ones all the time and im honestly excited Sony is making more because I keep hoping they're taken more seriously. I keep hoping for better films!!! I just don't see it, yet...

Keep American actors out of Ghost of Tsushima though, seriously. American director maybe!

I can see myself enjoying the TV shows more than the games (uncharted & tlou1, never played 2)

As I found myself enjoying the characters/dialogue a lot more than the gameplay.

But does every remotely popular Sony IP need a TV show or film?

Good luck to Neil, but I hope this doesn't mean he won't be working on ND games anymore. He is still one of my most favorite video game writers and creative directors, and I'd love to see more of his work -- especially in the form of a new video game IP.

About the movies adaptations I have zero hope, all of the video game to movie adaptation get’s ruined no matter which Hollywood studio does it.
About the tv shows, Sony does makes good ones, “for all mankind” for Apple, “ the crown” for Netflix

but a game adaptation, even if the show is amazing, we gamers will definitely feel a disconnect between the game and the tv show.
