Disaster Report 5 Teased by Granzella

If you loved Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, there is a tidbit of good news coming directly from developer Granzella.

In a blog post published today, the developer teased that planning and some preliminary production has already started for the next game of the series.

No further information was provided, but this is certainly promising.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Disaster Series, it debuted all the way back in 2002 on the PlayStation 2 with the title “Zettai Zetsumei Toshi.” It was then localized for North America and Europe the following year.

The latest game of the series, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, was has been released in the west for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC earlier this year, courtesy of NIS America.

Here’s what it’s all about.

“When a massive earthquake strikes your city, you find yourself at the epicenter of a chaotic and catastrophic crisis.
It is up to you rise above the calamity, collect your thoughts and your fellow survivors, and outlast the disaster. Aftershocks, fire, falling buildings and debris, and unstable ground are but a few of the threats you will face in these nightmarish circumstances.
What will you do when every passing second and every snap decision could spell the difference between life and death?”

Wasn't Disaster Report 4 a total (wait for it) disaster critically? I'm surprised they're moving forward with another sequel.

As someone who played the Disaster Report a million times on the ps2, DR4 was hot garbage compared to it. Not expecting much from this.

I enjoyed 4 once I came to my own conclusion/assumption that the game changed in tone when development restarted after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

I’m speculating here, but after the huge loss of life and damage from the 2011 disaster, they opted for a more realistic depiction on the effects of a natural disaster. The large scale action set pieces from previous games seemed to be replaced with more interpersonal conflicts with the various characters and scenarios you come across.

For anyone who hasn’t played the 4th game yet, just go into it understanding the history of the game’s development and that it wasn’t intended to play the same way as previous entries in the series.

But now that the game was released and some of its scenarios have been rehashed in other media(Japan Sinks first few episodes) I think they’re going to bring back some of the more silly and action oriented aspects of the PS2 games in the 5th game.

I'd totally be down for a new SOS game or a spiritual sequel for it. In a way, it's a more realistic platformer with a bit of puzzle and survival elements (or at least the feel of it) while being under a time limit, which, well, I mean you're on a sinking ship, lol.

I still feel that this concept could be great if done well in current times.

Damn, was it really that bad?
Performance aside, obviously.
It's pretty terrible. Putting aside the terrible controls and performance (at least at the time).
First off, none of the choices you make actually matter, in previous games, choices you made could determine whether someone lives or dies, or whether you escape early, etc. The choices also impacted the relationship between you and the main heroine.
In this game, they do nothing. Aside from a choice at the very end to determine what ending you get, the choices have no impact on the way events play out. You can choose to "Go call for help" as an option, but this isn't actually possible (I assume the game must be unfinished) and you can actually only just move on to the next map, creating a disconnection between the choices you make and the actual outcome, which happens pretty often. There is also no main heroine in the game, so there is no relationship or anything to influence with your decisions. Depending on the choices you make, you can accumulate "good guy" or "bad guy" points (forget what it is actually called), but get this, the points don't actually do anything. If you choose the asshole option, you will get text that says something like, you gained 10 bad guy points. And that's it. A number just goes up.
The disaster report games are well known for having silly dialogue choices, but the games themselves were always serious. If you, as the player character chooses the silly option, people will react to it in an appropriate "what the fuck are you doing" way, you'll lose affection with your partner, etc. In the 4th game, the entire world has gone stupid. It's like they just designed it for youtube streamers to show off funny dialogue options to interest people in the game.

The story is basically non-existent. In previous games, a disaster is ongoing throughout the game (sinking/flooding island for example), and you are typically trying to escape. You hear about a place that might be safe so you go there, only to find out that it's fucked there too, and you keep trying to survive and escape the city, until you finally manage to get out. In this game, the disaster is already over. The protagonist is just wandering aimlessly around the city, basically stumbling upon events. It doesn't make any sense. The game has a small number of maps too, so you will literally be trekking back and forth across the same maps over and over. Half way through the game they are already working on clearing the rubble and shit, and you are still just wandering around map to map. There is never any immediate danger, nothing for the protagonist to escape from, so he has no real reason to travel around the town, but the game still makes you do so.
The characters are all underdeveloped and meaningless, to the point that they had to add DLC for free after the fact showing what happened to these characters. Rather than a main heroine, you spend half the game on your lonesome, and the other half paired up with one of 3? girls, who disappear from the story just as fast as they appear, which kind of makes it hard to give a shit about any of them.

The game feels unfinished and half assed. It has no heart.
If you haven't played any of the games in the series, go play 2. Or 3. Or 1. Hell, I'd even recommend Kyoei Toshi over this game, but I don't think it has an English release.

Damn, detailed and ruthless description. Thank you very much,I remember the first one on ps2 quite fondly, maybe I'll wait for an exceptional offer on this one

Hopefully they'll bring the series back to quality (of PS2 days).

Nowadays it's a disaster.

I remember being hyped for Disaster Report 4 because of its premise, but the demo was horrible and I'm not considering a purchase even when it's on deep sale. The game felt very budget (I expected that but still - holy shit) and very outdated. Not to mention it apparently doesn't have meaningful choices.

They need to do another water based disaster like Raw Danger. Significantly better than the other entries in the series I've played and far more interesting to see its impact on the city over a period of time compared with an earthquake.

Ben Moore from EZA did a decent sum-up of the game here:

If you want to see more he streamed it for a couple hours and its very funny in parts, especially the "shouting" bit:
