So I playing Horizon Dawn Zero and it's not aged well

Aloy is a piece of wood and the story is dogshit and conveyed through extremely lazy recordings for the most part.

Gameplay and graphics are great but gameplay also gets old with the lack of enemy variety.

Side missions are in between ass creed and Witcher 3 in quality, closer to ass creed.

Overall it is OK.

Aged? lol

It has better story than all. I mean all, open world games launched in 2020.

The lore to me was something that unless you were hardcore into, didn't grab you like something to Halo.
It was Sony's answer to Halo, but nowhere near as good, effectively up against enemies in gas-masks, I'd rather play Resistance 3

- Not well balanced difficulty
- Boring open world
- too much filler in the primary story
- intro that is cliche as hell

This game is just ok, but it's from Sony, so it's great
I agree. I felt like it was a slightly superior version of the last Assassin's creed game at the time. Then another Assassin's creed came out that blew this out of the water. Then another. There was another a few months ago. I agree, time has not been kind to this game and they didn't iterate fast enough. The story bores me to the bone and the lead voice actress sounds bored by it as well.

Dude get out of here, Sony games are constantly shitted on this Forum left and right everyday. You have to be pretty damn blind in order to not see that even blantant lies are always made up just in order to do so.

Claiming you like Sony games without being called a fanboy, now that's a challenge.
Then I must be pretty damn blind.

What time is it?
Something about the pull of the bow just never felt right for me. It felt weightless or like it lacked a sense of tension. I've restarted the game a handful of times and quickly give up once you buy a map and see the typical open world fair. It's a shame too as it has a beautiful world and I think the robot dinosaurs have great designs.

I remember not liking it when I played it back in 2017.

Booted it again a couple of months ago, and I think I enjoy it a little more. Don't think it is as great as other Sony exclusives, but it is good.

Horizon: Zero Dawn was pretty mediocre from the beginning. Having played BotW right before it killed any enjoyment of H:ZD I might have found. Game is a graphical showcase, but that's about it. Playing it again years later, I still don't find myself enjoying it and quit after a few hours.

I skipped the game because of how ugly they made the lead. I don't know what kind of statement they were trying to make by going the ugly route but I didn't want to support it.

What really shook it's image was coming out near BOTW, imo. I played BOTW and then HZD shortly after and HZD's world felt much more... static than BOTWs dynamic systems. So I agree it's not so much that it aged poorly that it was seemingly dated even at launch.

True.

But I played both games back to back and I just don't think Horizon is shit compared to BOTW.
BOTW has the MUCH better world which is a lot more fun to explore and interact with and, ultimately, makes it the better game. But I liked the combat, story, visuals, music and sidequests more in Horizon to be honest.

Fallout 3 is a deeper game and that's saying something. HZD suffers from bipolar disorder. It doesn't know if it wants to be a RPG or assassins creed. It fails at both. Not a bad game. 7/10.

Yeah sorry didn't mean that HZD was shit compared to BOTW, I liked both a lot, just that in terms of open world games BOTW was a better game and an industry achievement. I really only enjoyed the storyline more in HZD than BOTW because it had one lol

I personally never fan of the game even when first came out back in 2017. The “open world” felt just window dressing instead of something you want to explore and I always felt Alloy was dry as fuck......but that just me.

I never finished is as it was very copy/paste and the world felt really fake even for a game but it did look and play very well apart from the human combat.

I'm confused, I thought it was one of the best games on the PS4. Aloy is such a badass character, much better than empty block of wood game protagonists like John Spartan or Doom Guy and the world that you are thrust in is filled with such wonder and excitement (seriously Meridian!).

From my experience, most of the people hating on the game always seem to go after Aloy which isn't surprising because of how amazing she is in the story. She replaces Ellen Ripley for me as the most genuinely badass woman in games media.

Haven't played it since I beat the core game at launch and haven't been back, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It looked good, the world and story were interesting, it didn't beat the player over the head with any particular agenda which it easily could have (at least not the non-DLC stuff), and the gameplay was solid. I really enjoyed the combat; trying to figure out the best way to approach and defeat each robot was fun. Def more of a dodge and roll situation in most cases over a head-to-head fight, but not always. The use of diff weapons and tactics for diff situations worked well I thought. To each his own.

Weapons were great, but close combat is broken, ai generated open world so bland and boring, having to follow a onscreen arrow gave a headache. needs a lot more indoor areas, boss fights, hope forbidden west fixes all these.

Such a fresh take.

I'm guessing you feel all Sony games are equally boring as well? And your favorite games are forza and Halo?
I do feel most Sony games are boring, but HZD isn't one of them. It was the first game that made me consider getting a PS4 when it was first revealed and while I found the other Sony games disappointing and underwhelming, HZD greatly exceeded my wildest expectations. It's one of my favorite games from last gen.

To me the story is amazing and the way it was revealed through datapads and holograms was awesome. I thought Aloy and the rest of the cast were great characters and I like the combat much better than any other Sony 1st party. Fighting, tracking and trapping MechaDinos, over-riding MechaDinos and using them as mounts. I mean what's not to like. It felt fresh and unique. It's the only Sony game I had the slightest desire to play a 2nd time. If I still had a PS4, I'd play it 3rd time.

No the facemodel for Aloy is Hannah Hoekstra.

The graphics were all good from a technical standpoint but nothing about the world felt memorable. Maybe it's because of the unnaturalness of it all.

I don't see the resemblance.

the game was great in the 2 days before BOTW released. Then i tried to play it after playing Zelda and....(insert Principal skinner pathetic meme)

it aged a decade in 2 days. It has a lot going for it. But ultimately i just dont find it fun to play. I have forced myself to play it a million times. I find it impossible to stick with.

*snip*

interesting you are definitely right, wonder why they used a different face model/VA for Aloy, but used the same for lance reddick's character. Maybe scheduling conflicts?

The model is supper attactive. They definitely hit the character with the ugly stick though. But why?

It might just be the hair? I think Aloy is cool looking but her hair is definitely not lol

It really was, there was not much there to interact with or not much to find even if you do explore. Its open world is there to show off it graphics engine for photo mode more than proper open world.

It's the AAA game cycle:

Day 1: "BEST GAME OF ALL TIME"

Year 1: "90 Awards"

Year 2: *Forgets game even exists*

Year 3: "Remember that game? It kind of sucked"
I like that! HZD does fit the cycle above, as its one of those games that upon release felt like it 'pushed the medium forward'. A new IP with outstanding graphics, a female protagonist, cinematic story, and an exclusive.

Upon reflection, it was all a bit too linear for an open world and the 'cinematic story' and protagonist were forgettable, but I suspect the cycle will apply again once the sequel comes out (and we'll all play along).

I was pleasantly surprised by it given how boring and drab and generic the Killzone series was yet I'm sure there are people that think that about Zero Dawn, but not the Killzone series.

Besides melee combat gameplay is great...its a light rpg so can be enjoyed by adventure and rpg players...

Guerilla should look at Days Gone melee combat system....would help Horizon a lot.

This trend of saying games 'have not aged well" is getting ridiculous.

HZD only came out 3 years ago and there hasn't been any massive revolution in the meanwhile. We're not in 1995-2000 anymore.

Just say the game is bad/not very good, many people agree on that.

For a first try from a studio that made somewhat uninspired shooters it was great. Especially story wise. ANd honestly using traps doesn't feel as good until you're maxed out which is more towards the end. It has similar issues to days gone. Days gone has good gameplay, it's just the meat of the game doesn't really kick in until closer to the third act, and it takes to long to get there.

On top of the story not being as well written as Horizon.
I disagree with this. I thought killzone was an amzing unique franchise, especially KZ2 and mercaniaries and shadowfall fell short due to launch game.

Days gone and HZ are both fun, especially starting out.

I think the issue here is there two types of gamers. Ones who value the journey and ones who just want power and be a badass.
I fall into the former camp. Its the same thing with mmo games. I had friends who are full on mmo crazies for wow and such and would just speed run to max level or do something to skip levels. Why?
They tell me the leveling is boring and they only play for the end game.
Maybe it's my single player RPG background but I have fun being under powered. I cherish the story and world, getting new loot or skills and the journey getting there, not the end goal, as to me it just signals the end is near.

To me, its fun when you have limited capability but a few tricks up your sleave and you scrape by the skin of your teeth and barely make it out alive. Using your wits and smarts to conquer to mission/challenge, instead of brute force or maxed out equipment. What fun is being maxed out level or equipment with no further advancements.

As soon as it's an open world game that lets you pick up herbs and shit on the ground for crafting, it's an instant snooze fest.

Loved every min of it. The kiddy robots from beginning became easy the hard part is planning to take out the bigger ones.

The world is extremely beautiful.

Whats better, this game or Rise of the Tomb-Raider?
As someone that OWNS the following.

Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider Legends, Tomb Raider Underworld (Steam)
Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider Legends, Tomb Raider Underworld (PS3 Trilogy Collection)
Tomb Raider Underworld (PS3)
Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider Underworld (Wii)
-
Tomb Raider (2013) (Steam)
Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4)

IMHO, Horizon Zero Dawn is better then Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Aged well? It was terribly overrated to begin with.

Aside from the technical marvel of it's engine, nearly everything else in the game was stale or undercooked. And my god, that story was awful. I literally quit the game halfway through because I couldn't stop cringing at the cutscenes and where the story was going.

A recurring joke a few buddies of mine have now is randomly yelling "Alloy" as loudly and as stupidly as the her dad. That is 10x more fun than this game ever was.

games aging in a matter of 3 years, meanwhile I can play 20+ year old games that I never had nostalgia for and still find enjoyment and passion in those oldies.

The mele combat is very mediocre but ranged combat is amazing for me and I loved the world. Hope they improve the mele combat in new one
How would they do good melee combat vs giant robot dinosaurs. It would be like swinging a sword into a cliff face. No damage. Getting into a vital spot would require maybe mounting said enemy like shadow of colossus or dragons dogma and stabbing certain key areas, but i wouldn't call it melee combat at that point. Maybe traversal and stab stab stab. The range combat focus gets around the fact that these are heavily armored machines that are trained to kill.

Also factor in Aloy isn't a body builder and please don't suggest this to them we have enough woke studios, and uglifying women characters making them like dudes or musclebound weirdos (abby).
If they would do that then have a different main character or 2nd one that focuses on raw strength. I don't buy into to the bs "if you feel it you are it" nonsense.

Now if you are talking about just combat vs humans then that is a different story. Soft tissue is a big difference than hard plated dino steel. Thing is most of the game is combat vs the robots.

Not everything has to be Assassins creed. Imagine if every open world game used that as a framework for traversal or style. It would suck. HZ is unique and focuses on range combat. I am betting some of you just don't like it as it requires strategizing combat over pure brute force or pew pew pew and done.

two years in gaming might as well be a decade nowadays with how fast shit moves
The me me me entitlement and instant gratification generation. I still go back to playing games from 30+ years ago, from when i was a teen. Hell I bought C&C ultimate colleciton last night for $4.00 and was playing Tiberian Sun, a game from 2000/1999. People are just overly picky and can't savor uniqueness and want everything to match the current trend or be popular. "oh it's not new, must be shit" ughhh..

I disagree. I've played it several times over the past few years, and I think it holds up very well. I continued to enjoy and appreciate the story, Aloy, the combat, and the environments, even on my third run through. I can't say that of many games.
