Astro Bot: Rescue Mission Best 3D platformer this gen?

Got PSVR for Christmas for my kids (wink wink). And I’m loving Astro Bot.

Now I fully admit that the game wouldn’t be anything special without the VR mechanics, but that’s what makes it worth playing.

The mine cart level and the underwater level are especially innovative.

It really feels like VR should have been a Nintendo innovation, not Sony. They already tried it twice before. And it was Astro Bot that got me to think about Nintendo since it was clearly inspired by Mario.

I don’t have a PS5 yet, but Astro Bot’s Playroom looks promising. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it supports VR yet. We’ll see if holds up without it.

It's the best 3D platformer, the best VR game and one of the best games of the generation.

While it didn't reach quite the same heights, the feelings it gave me toward VR gaming were very similar to what Mario 64 gave me toward 3D gaming.
Same here on that feeling of playing proper 3D games.

Totally agree with this.
It's a masterpiece top to bottom.

it was so simple, fun, intuitive, difficulty was just right 😩👌perfection. just an all around amazing video game. I straight up got sad at the end when the little buddy thought he had to leave lol

if Astro’s playroom is really that good, then these developers have quickly earned their way into my favorites list. They just know how to make solid, fun games.

Astrobot: Rescue Mission, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Odyssey, and Sackboy are my favorite 3D platformers of the generation (are Wii U and Switch both the same gen as PS4?).

And the game totally gave Super Mario 64 vibes. Felt totally new and exciting. I was like a giddy kid.

Modern-era VR is not really a Sony innovation, though. It all really began with the development of the Oculus Rift.

That’s not really my claim though. Nintendo could have easily went the vr route but didn’t. Probably because it’s too expensive and would ultimately only be an add-on to their system.

It just seems more Nintendo than Sony. And PC for that matter.

It's a very good game, no doubt about it. When I played it for the first time I was in shock. My mouth was wide open and I couldn't believe what I was playing. It was so revolutionary. I had never felt like that playing a video game before. Without VR the game would be just ok, just like Astro's Playroom is. Solid, fun games but somewhat on the generic side, just like Sony's platformer games have always been.

Super Mario Odyssey is still better when it comes to game feel, level design, sound design and overall production values. Some people complain that Nintendo keeps milking the same franchises, but their games are always full of originality and new ideas. I wonder what could happen if the Mario team made a VR game. But sadly I don't think Nintendo believes in VR.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission was Sonys best game last gen and it was not even close. Inovative, clever and very good gameplay. But still Mario Odyssey beats Astro Bots.

They believe in VR, but they also believe on making off hardware profits from affordable technology.

Playroom is just as good but no VR, and a bit shorter. Its full of nostalgia though.

It's good, but not as good as Rescue Mission. The game just works so well in VR.

But, I would love a sequel that has both VR and the bells and whistles of the DualSense.

I'm so anxious to get my PS5 to play the other, Astro's Playroom :(
Bust that isn't VR. Rescue Mission is on a whole other level. A LOT of people got a PS5 and played an Astro game for the first time. They think it's the second coming. It's nothing compared to the VR experience of Rescue Mission. Trust me!

hmmm i might have to check this out....is it worth buying a PSVR for my 5 or wait to see what the next iteration is about???

I hear lots of people saying “they need to make a full Astro Bot game”

They did.... 2 years ago.

It’s such a shame that more people aren’t aware of, and got to play, this absolute masterpiece.

Lol. I'm convinced if Astrobot and VR were a Nintendo thing it'd be 10/10s everywhere and ALL the media would be screaming about it.

Astro's Playroom begs to differ heavily.
That’s not what I meant. I meant Astro Bot specifically wouldn’t be as good. It would be okay, but due to the VR setup, it had to be a straight forward, point A to point B platformer. And it used it’s limitations to its advantage, making you peek around corners and using headbutts to fight enemies.

Imagine playing Wii Sports without motion controls. It would probably be okay, but it would take away the unique things that made Wii Sports so popular.

The game was specifically designed around VR so yeah, if you take the VR away from that particular game it obviously wouldn't be as good, but they've shown the can also design great Astro games without the VR as in Astro's Playroom.

Nonsense.

If Nintendo's next big 3D Mario or Zelda released with 5 hours of content then they would get absolutely slaughtered for it.

Astro's Playroom is also super fun and full of references etc. A really cool homage to Playstation.

The only thing holding them back is the lack of content. If they had a lot more levels, collectibles and actual game mechanics (different types of jumps, moves, chaining moves etc) then you'd be looking at a top level 3D platformer.

Even just on PS5 I would say Sackboy is by far a superior game in almost all aspects.
Yooka-Laylee and A Hat In Time are both far better games too.

Mario Odyssey has more of a sandbox type design so I'm not sure it's the right game to compare to Astrobot.
Possibly Mario 3D world is a better one for comparison.

While they are very good, I don't think either of the Astro games are even close to being able to make a claim on being best of the generation.
They are very decent short experiences that serve as amazing tech demos for VR and the Dualsense controller respectively.

The thread is about the best 3D platformers of this gen. Does Oculus Rift has a better platformer than Astro Bot Rescue Mission?

This is 100% the case. The games are just as innovative and charming as Nintendo games, there is hardly a difference.

Hot take but if Sea of Thieves was a Switch exclusive, bet on it that it would've been hailed as a groundbreaking open sea co-op classic. I think that game also feels a lot like a Nintendo product.

All nintendo plateformer have 3 time more ideas, content and depth in the end.
Imo astrobot game are mostly made to promote tech/gadget( playroom) . the poc aspect with straightforward , not rich level and game design and short length of them make that obvious to me.
They doesn't compare to full game experiences at all
If you need tech/gadget validation bias will work full force. If you look beyond that, decent serviceable content at best is what remain.

This narrative that Nintendo is the only innovative player and Sony isn't capable needs to stop. Nintendo's entire brand is based on milking old franchises and Sony is constantly creating new IPs and pushing the latest hardware. VR is the future and I fully expect PSVR 2 to bring all the features people are clamoring for.

Retard please look again on the whole Nintendo catalog if see there's actually new IP or not in the recent years.

They have made a few but it's their 30 year old franchises that their fans are always screaming for more of. They also design their hardware as conservatively as possible to make it its generating a profit.

Rescue Mission is as close to Nintendo as Sony has ever got. It's one of the 5 best games this generation imo. Let's hope Sony invests in a proper sequel for PS5.

Wtf are talking about? Like who are the fans? What franchise? Be more specific.

Making hardware with profit in mind is definitely a plus for any kind company instead of selling it at a loss. PS Vita flopped hard because they had to save cost by reinforcing proprietary memory card to gain back those development cost, and guess what people hate it so much. If you thought selling hardware with profit is actually bad idk what to tell you, must be delusional AF or something.
