I’ve always wondered why do people have an issue with Xbox Gamepass and other services like PlayStation Now (I mentioned PlayStation because some have issues with that but that’s a different topic). I don’t understand why people have an issue with the services, the way I see it if people are having issues with it I would look at major developers and indie developers, if I don’t see major backlash against Xbox Gamepass (and other services) then I think Xbox Gamepass is working fine.....for now. For me it’s an amazing service to have especially when money is tight....now you might not be able to play the latest biggest games but it’s a service that can give you options to play with.

Again the way I see it if I don’t see major developers along with indie developers complaining enough about where the backlash out of everything gaming plays out then why just why do some gamers find an issue with these services? You are not being held a gun to your head and forced to use it and games are still being sold on storefronts and that’s not something that will go away for at least 2 to 3 generations long and long time in gaming years.

So my question to you guys are do you have an issue with it and why?

Some people can't get their heads around the concept of renting games, even though we've been doing it for decades, and those people haven't realised that they don't technically own their digital games either.

Some people think it's "bad value" because they're the kinds of people who will revisit a game over and over again, but that's not what many others do.

And? Who cares? Game companies are not your friends. They produce a product that you are paying your money for.

Read their user agreement. You don't own shit when you rent, stream or even buy digitally.

I'm all digital since PS3 days, but give me a brake, if game companies are ok with something you should think twice about their motives. Hint: it's always about money. Just remember the original XBONE E3 debacle...

If you are happy with their subscriptions - good for you. But having devs/publishers approve it should be ultimately meaningless for you.

If you like it then enjoy.

1.I prefer to buy games.

2. I dont wanna pay $100 a year to play games I already own. I own the the ones I want at launch mostly. And not waiting till they come on gamepass to play them. Or I get them on sale.

3. I think gamepass model is not sustainable unless you can throw money away like MS. Theyve said its not making much profit. If gamepass is to fund studios in the future, its not gonna give them enough to make the AAA games they Are use to making at the moment. ( bethesda etc ) They need big sales for big games.
There keeping it going to probably try and combat Sony and Nintendo as nothing else works for Xbox. In the long run, its not gonna do well for gaming

Until the quality of the games that initially release on GamePass come even close to matching the quality of Nintendo or Sony games, I'll remain skeptical.

I own GamePass and a Series X. I still find myself using either very rarely, because I play the games I want to play the most, not just whatever happens to be available on my rental subscription service.

Nice loaded poll, by the way.

I've noticed the biggest detractors of Game pass are PlayStation fans. I've heard things about coupons and rental services but it's clear they have no idea what they are talking about. Game pass is awesome and I'm glad MS made it.
I bet you also applauded microsoft for xbox live gold back in the day and chanted the "you get what you pay for" mantra.

I don't have a problem with services like gamepass but I do think it promotes certain types of games which I do not personally like.

1) GAAS, cheap/free games on a paid subscription.
2) Short burst 'mobile games' with good graphics for streaming.

So you've never seen the games on gamepass?

Edit: what you said doesn't even make sense. Surely it's better to develop open world games that are as long as hell so you stay subscribed for longer..... Rather then short mobile games where you complete them quickly

Because you need only look at the shitshow that is mobile gaming for the consequences of a race to the bottom with game prices, and the ever increasing hassle and cost all the myriad of competing tv and movie streaming services are causing, then you can see that maybe those of us looking further ahead than the end of the month might have misgivings about the long term consequences of this kind of service.

No one is saying being able to play thousands of dollars worth of games for a few dollars per month isn’t good value.

But if a deal seems to good to be true, it probably is.

The very fact major game studios and publishers are scrambling on board with this model, studios and publishers that we should all bear in mind already happily use harmful manipulation to get more than the asking price from their customers, wherever possible, going so far as to make children basically gambling addicts, should be a massive red flag here.

Because they clearly think this will get them as much, if not most likely more money, than they would just selling these games like they did before.

Does anyone really think the likes of EA are joining up to Gamepass because it will let their customers save money? And not that they’ve calculated they’ll end up with more money at the Gamepass subscribers expense?

I don't know why anyone would have an issue with this. I did 2 months of Ubisoft + and played 140 hrs across 2 recent games for 30 bucks. I can jump back in whenever I want to. I will get gamepass on PC once I burn through my small PS5 backlog and play Cyberpunk and possibly after my free copy of Far Cry 6 if the game launches soon. It also kind of forces me to get through the games in time to cancel for a bit which tends to keep me focused.

My only complaint about Ubisoft + and gamepass is that you cannot buy a 1 month gift card for someone for PC.

same, honestly I mostly seem to use Game Pass to try out indie games before I then buy it on Switch 😝 otherwise I mostly play first-party games or do the Quests to get Microsoft Rewards points

Yeah, this is playing out just like it did for Netflix. At the start Netflix was such a no brainer amazing value because the studios had absolutely zero idea what their content was worth and licensed them to Netflix for dirt cheap, so you had an extremely cheap service that let you watch anything, and it was amazing. And then the studios realized that they should be charging real money for their content and then Netflix started raising their prices. And now we are at the point where a show like Friends costs $500 MILLION for the rights to stream, and no single streaming provider could afford to buy the rights to every big show without charging like $50 month. So now you have 10 streaming providers each with a few trophy TV shows or movies to get you to subscribe, and if you wanted to watch everything you would have to pay $50 a month anyway.

Of course that is why Netflix has pushed so hard into the original content, but for every quality Netflix original there are like a dozen absolute garbage filler romance movies that are churned out so that people keep subscribing.

Playstation Plus also went through a similar cycle. PS3 days it was full of recently released AAA legit titles every month, probably because devs had no idea what they were giving away. Now its a bunch of indie or older games.

Game Pass concern threads are nothing new. There are legitimate questions to the longevity of the model at its current price point but the results so far have been positive from a developer and consumer stand point. Everyone appears to be happy with it which is a strong showing that its accomplishing its goals.

Without long term numbers and knowing how the deals are being inked its impossible to say it'll fail or be a run away success.

If you have issues with those goals due to consumer rights, DRM etc, Microsoft hasn't taken away anything from the consumer as still allows people to purchase their content how they want. A lot of concern is thrown around that wont be the case in the future but theres not much if any evidence to support this theory.

No, major game studio’s are happy to use gambling mechanics, in loot boxes and the like, to trick children into giving them thousands of dollars, without a single bit of guilt about the consequences to that child later in life or their families finances.

So why, pray tell, would they be happy to let people access their games via Gamepass, at effectively a 90% discount, if they didn’t calculate they’d end up with at least the same amount of money , if not more, than they would just selling the games normally?

Again, the people who are singing the services praises, really don’t seem to be looking at the bigger picture, and seem to lack the basic understanding that these major corporations have anything but their best interests at heart.

The biggest issue is that you don't own any games. If Microsoft decide that your favourite game is no longer profitable to keep on the service, it'll disappear and will never be seen again. If its handled badly enough, even if you have the game disabled the digital authentication may be shut down, rendering the software inoperable.

Everything moving to a service-based model is not inherently a good thing.

I like it as a service, it gives great value, but it could give people an all digital mentality.

That's really the main negative thing about the service, that and not needing to purchase all Xbox first party games individually or using it as part of the ecosystem. There are too many subscription services and Microsoft may not help detractors when they all may have Netflix subscriptions or streaming services for example. But overall I think it has a place.

So many retards in this thread it's incredible, subscription service are the thing nowadays PS Now exist same as GamePass, GamePass is better for newer games, PS Now destrys GP in older games, end of story.

PS+ collection is the best so far.

I mean, the two options will coexist in the future, people still go to see movies when they have Netflix, they still buy porn when Pornhub premium exists and the same will happen here.

It’s ok to have preferences for physical media or « owning » digital games, although it’s debatable how much you really own a digital game. The rest is mostly bollocks concern trolling in my opinion.

A friend of mine has been able to play Sekiro, DS3, Nier Automata and many others through Gamepass, so it seems like a pretty cool service.

I would like to see the same service in other systems tbh.
EDIT: Only Nier... I guess.

Gamepass and services like it will be the norm in the next 5 years. Microsoft is pumping it's entire first party output into Gamepass day 1 and it will only improve over the next few years. I expect PlayStation to eventually follow suit in a few years once they realize that's the direction the industry is heading and Nintendo will do something similar in due time.

It will be to video games what Spotify did to music. Who purchases music albums or singles out right anymore? Not many people.

If it wasn't for gamepass i wouldn't be gaming. I don't believe games are worth their cost anymore.

With that said, i can't deny that gamepass has made me see games as more throwaway than ever before.
Bingo. A lot of games these days are not worth their day 1 MSRP. I can't stop counting how many "AAA" games turn out to be mediocre trash with continual micro transactions and "season passes".

The idea of me spending $59 these days for a video game is a hard sell due to Gamepass unless I really want it.

"You will own nothing, and you will be happy."

I like to own the stuff i buy and i don't want to buy a license that allows me to rent a game for a limited time. Also gamepass keeps adding new stuff but also removes old stuff, so if you pay for the service, you would be forced to buy the game you liked anyway in the end because gamepass decided to remove the game you liked. The "netflix" trend of the game industry worries me.
