If you play FIFA, Madden, F1 etc, how often do you buy a new version??

Those sports games which get a new version each year - FIFA, Madden, F1 etc - are what I'm talking about.

I suppose there used to be more. Tiger Woods, NHL, NBA - maybe they still get US releases.

So, do you get every single version? Or do you skip years here and there?

For me, it's as follows:

FIFA, I get one a few years into a gen, and then another as the gen comes to an end. So I got FIFA 15 just after I got a PS4 and then got FIFA 20 recently.

WRC and F1 I get every year, but I get them a year later. So recently I got F1 2019.

I buy all Big Amy's cricket games, but they aren't annual, and they play very differently from each other, and also seem to hold their value, in the UK at least.

How about you people?

Fifa once per generation, during a sale. When the world cup happens so they add the world cup expansion.

These games pretty much dont change, they could update the games every season with new players and updated teams. Instead they make u buy a new game cuz that way you need to re-build ur entire team in Ultimate Team. And thats where the cash grab is.

When I was following European soccer and had a small league going on among my friends - used to buy every Winning Elevens for my PS2, once or twice a year - because sometimes International ver had slight upgrades and all.

These days, no. I did buy PES20 digitally on sale, but haven't put any time in it. Occasional off-line match when my friends come visit my place, and that's it.

Same for me. I bought every PES until 2012, then almost nothing (I only bought FIFA in 2013 and PES 2017, I believe).

F1 every year but about 3-6 months later on sale. PES every other year.

Used to buy fifa every year but I realised the game barely evolved and used to stress me out playing it (and I was getting addicted to ultimate team at one point) so quit cold turkey.

I only play single player. If you mostly play online, I suppose you have to update more often.

I've never dabbled with FUT. Can you carry any players over to future editions?

NHL and Madden every year

NHL is day one and I wait for Madden to go on sale. I think of it almost like a subscription at this point

I only play FIFA out of the EA Sports games, and I get it in EA Play some months after launch. I only buy it earlier if a friend, colleague or someone is bugging me earlier to play, but since I haven't really been too active in the game since FIFA16 or so, getting in later "free" is no issue for me. So I'd say I probably buy it maybe like twice per generation, the rest is on EA Play.

I sub to EA Play Pro (this is only available on PC). Every EA game at launch justifies the price (99 dollars a year) for me.

I used to buy F1 games every year (not on day 1, but around the first big sale), but with the sport becoming political last year and planning to race in Saudi Arabia this year (because green dollars matter too) I'm thinking about taking a break.

I have zero interest in popular sports like football or basketball.

I wonder if the champagne spraying will happen after the Saudi Grand Prix. Presumably not.

My relatives pretty much buys FIFA yearly. They used to do it for Cod but from what I see they are skipping versions. But for FIFA it is an every year thing. No wonder FIFA is this big.

For me personally, I bought Call of Duty once and same for FIFA.

I buy PES/WE most years at launch. The updated rosters and updates for the season for LIVE Update are worth it for me. I generally buy Fifa when it's on a deep discount, just for different game modes butI don't do that every year. And it's more for the population of say Be a Pro

I'm in uk and a massive football fan. I watch a couple of live games a week, go to games when I could before lockdown, I read up on footy news daily. I played semi pro years ago and back then some players I knew appeared on in the game! I still play in a 5 a side league now at 44. I've bought every fifa game ever released lol dating back to the megadrive.

For many people in the uk football is a way of life.

I've wondered before what happens to those millions upon millions of old copies of fifa? Any game really. It's a massive waste really.

I used to buy every FIfa version. I think I owned FIFA international soccer (released in 1994) on the Mega Drive all the way to FIFA 2003 on the Xbox. I remember thinking Fifa Road to the World Cup 1998 was the best.

Since then I have bought them rather intermittently and play PES more now. I kind of wish they would just release a new game every 3 years or so, such that they can actually make proper improvements rather than releasing a new game with new kits with a few mods. I mean they could just sell a new kit, player and team pack each year for like £20 and keep the game mechanics the same.

Nop, every new Fifa has a separate FUT. To make players rebuild they entire FUT team every year. Its crazy how scummy EA is.

At this point Fifa could be a free 2 play game, just FUT alone would be enogh to make EA profits.

I don't normally play these games as they arnt my type.... But I was collecting MS rewards and one required me to download fifa 21 trial and earn 1 achievement.

I've probably not played a fifa game since 360 so I was shocked to find out howuch the game plays like a free to play. Microtransactions literally everywhere. Also couldn't navigate the menus or understand what any of it was. Just wanted to play a normal match but had a load of different modes I didnt know what they were.

Used to buy FIFA every year when I played online religiously (was never that good but meh). Now I'll just google which version has the most tolerable visuals and gameplay for the price and buy it super cheap. I'm still rocking FIFA 18. Don't play online anymore so it doesn't bother me. Played the FIFA 20 demo and... wow it's barely changed.

Bought Madden every year from 2000-2017. Don't plan on buying another one again.

I don't play them, but I would like to!

This is what happens:
  • I see PES/F1 game, I think "cool, maybe I'll buy it this year!"
  • I wait some months because I want to pay as little as possible
  • As the games go down in price, the new edition begins to be showed
  • I want the new features, also I'll feel like an idiot buying an obsolete chapter so close to the new one, so i wait for the new one
  • The new chapter comes out, and i wait for the price to go down
  • I'm now in a loop.
Yearly scheduling has prevented me from buying F1 since 2012. I'm not joking. To this day I still don't have any of these games.

Never. Been an EA Play sub for years. Wait for current years version to hit the vault while I d/l user made updated rosters for the previous years versions.

I also dont buy Need for Speed anymore, though its one of my favorite franchises.

Now with EA Play on Gamepass I guess I just play whenever the latest version is available which is apparently 6 to 9 months after retail.

I bought NCAA Football every year from NCAA 98 until it was canceled by lawyers after NCAA 14 was released. Some years I even doubledipped on Xbox and PS2 versions to play with friends. I would still buy it annually if I could.

Nowadays I get Madden every other year or so. I no longer play other sports games, although I did buy The Show for the first time in about 10 years after baseball season was postponed due to rona.

Blimey. Stuff that then.

... I used to get 'Football Manager' every year, from maybe 2007-2013, but any time I have bought it since I've really struggled to enjoy it... Fifa... tbh, every 8 years, it is looking like... Madden is more rare, but I prefer those games a lot, it's just I've not often lived in countries where Madden is easy to buy

This past gen.
NHL 15, 18, 20.
FIFA 15, 18.
MLB The show 14, 19.
NBA2K 16, 19 and 20 from ps+ but I haven’t played it, probably never will.

I only buy these games when they’re on deep discount, like $10-$15. They’re just not worth getting because other than roster changes they don’t change enough year to year, even every few years they don’t change enough.

I used to buy them almost yearly when I was younger. Got NHL on Genesis to PS1 every year from 94-2000. They used to significantly change year to year so it was worth it. Probably the same with NBA Live. Other sports less often though.

It's not planned this way but I tend to buy a Fifa at launch every other year. sometimes on off years I pick it up a couple of months after release on sale too, although since I've gone with Series X with GPU as my main to start this gen I imagine if I don't get it at launch I'll just wait for it to hit Game Pass.

godhandiscen

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I have been buying FIFA yearly, but I think I am done with the series. I hated 2020, and still gave 2021 a go, but it was much worse.

I am buying PES yearly now.

Every year I buy Fifa, I used to get PES but after 14 I moved to Fifa.

I wait for sales 2 or 3 months after launch and I pay usually less than 14 USD, I split with a friend on PSN. I only play friendly matches online or a little bit of the career mode, I also pretend that the shitty Ultimate Team microtransactions mode doesn't exist.
