[VG Tech] Mortal Kombat 11 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Frame Rate Test

What do you mean non demanding?
If the game wasn't demanding it would have a locked 4k resolution. The fact that both versions have to employ a dynamic resolution very much means the game is demanding something that both console's GPUs aren't able to keep up with. It's as simple as that.

I mean it doesn't make use of the CPU like in open world game, which taxes both CPU and GPU simultaneously. Or in a high framerate 120 fps mode which requires extremely low latency. All those cases run better on PS5.

I think they did the bare minimum for an "upgrade" (it was already dynamic res and 60fps)
Not sure what the "Enhanced Visuals" are.

- 4K Dynamic Resolution
- Enhanced Visuals
- Significantly Improved Loading Times
- Cross-Platform and Cross-Gen Compatibility

PS4 Pro uses a dynamic resolution with pixel counts found during gameplay being between approximately 2240x1260 and 2560x1440. During scenes capped at 30fps the PS4 Pro can reach 3200x1800. PS4 Pro seems to downsample from this resolution when outputting at 1080p.
Xbox One X uses a dynamic resolution with pixel counts found during gameplay being between 2880x1620 and 3200x1800. During scenes capped at 30fps the Xbox One X can reach 3840x2160.
Curious what the PS 4 version disc stuck into a PS5 might do. Maybe a locked 60fps at 1440p.

Not much in this...

Both hold full 4k res most the time, only lower res rarely and when they do on this one,sx is higher for those fleeting moments.

Code, engines etc will slightly favour a machine on game by game basis and may be enough to edge one out as we have seen.

Either way a port of an old game again nothing completely re written I'd imagine.

Not sure how much they ventured outside the last gen versions tweaked as should both be locked res on such a title really...

Interesting never the less. X by a whisker. Average 59.97 fps ps5 vs 60 xsx....

So this is without any patch, just BC? What is this comparison then, PS5 especially could be running on lower clocks.

Anyway XSS beasting though, hard to beat the data.

Better buy myself one for games I don't play.

Finally the extra TFLOPs of the Series X are doing it's job, all is right in the world. Other studios should learn from NRS and get their act together and use the full power of XBOX! Unfortunately, I have this on PS5, but that is because the playstation is the official platform of MK11 and has a larger user base.

These weren't meant to be true next gen versions of MK11 just slightly upgraded versions for the new consoles, there are some small improvements and higher native res but I'm guessing they just worked up from the Pro and One X versions.

That's pretty much the case for every game released on new consoles so far, nothing has been written from the ground up for them, just being released later than the console like this patch doesn't make them next gen.
When we see games made specifically around the new machines these face offs might actually mean something.

Will Sony tech I mean VG tech go back and retest all these games after Microsoft forces these developers to make updates to properly use the hardware in the console?
Hopefully faster than DF went back to retest Witcher 3 on PS4 when it finally was patched to not run as much like crap.

Umm, different engines/games will stress different parts of the GPU! In games where you saw PS5 having frame-rate/res advantage was most likely rasterization, pixel fillrate bound, XSX GPU lacks in those departments. Games favoring compute power (TFLOPs), mem BW will run faster on XSX.

It doesn't run below One X if it has enhanced visuals.

I don't think that's a given (I could be wrong though). I'm basing this on Forza Optimixed for X | S that has less graphical fidelity than the One X version, right? (or was that the PC version?)

I'm going on the Ray Tracing on Watch Dogs Legion, the 60fps in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, The 120fps in Warzone, the 120fps in Gears 5 with enhanced visuals, the 120fps in Halo MCC, the enhanced graphics in Cyberpunk, the 120fps in Dirt 5...

Those minimum res drops are hardly noticeable during the heat of the moment, especially in a game like this. Even Series S looked like the bigger consoles, image quality-wise.
No doubt dynamic res trickery is faster than human eyes. I guess behind the scene, the hardware is working harder and better.

It's good news SX is starting to stretch it's leg, so much had been piled on it since launch

Really doubt the recently acquired studio would say otherwise regardless.

They're still using traditional LOD system, which should be eliminated from PS5 exclusives going forward. Also the Geometry Engines have much more to do in the future. We're still pretty early in the gen and current games have been developed much before the existence of the final PS5 dev kits.

RT is possible due to dedicated RT hardware in Series S.

And 60fps and 120fps are made possible due to a massive CPU upgrade. If One X's GPU were to be paired with Zen 2 CPU, it'd also do 60fps in Valhalla & 120fps in those titles you mentioned, likely even better than Series S does mainly because One X's GPU has 45% more bandwidth available to it and this likely also explains why One X is able to hit higher resolution more often than Series S in some games.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing though. I understand why Series S exists, I'm not bashing it. Don't get offended :messenger_hushed: now because I said "One X GPU > Series S GPU". I'm sure Series S's RDNA 2.0 excels in other areas where One X's GCN 4.0 doesn't. Like BC for e.g. and ofc MS knows what they are doing. 👍🏻

Barely scratching the surface implies massive gains later. R&C looks great. I could see improvements for sure but I doubt massive ones will come.

Same as every other comparasion, both deliver the same experience, if it wasnt for these no one would have been able to point what was the best version. This gen will be great for both camps.

I know all of this, I was replying to people pretending the One X is more capable than the Series S when it's obvious from the software it isn't.
