I haven't finished Persona 5, should I start Persona 5 Royal?

yes. royal is the better game and pacing is improved. you don't need to grind as much. it's so easy to max out your stats.

warning though: okumura is a bitch in Royal. they changed that boss fight and it made me rage :)

oh btw if you want to see all the new stuff Royal has:

New Content in Persona 5 Royal

  • New character and party member named Kasumi
  • An entirely new school semester has been added, expanding the story alongside a new Palace
  • The new 'Thieves Den' feature lets you visit a huge room full of unlockable bonus content at any time through the pause menu. You can use in-game currency to unlock things like artwork, character models, cutscenes, and music
  • A number of brand new animated story cutscenes
  • A whole new location called Kichijoji is yours to explore, and it's bigger than any other real world location in the game
  • Kichijoji has a club that you can visit with party members, opening up new social and bonding events
  • Kichijoji's club features a darts minigame that enhances the effects of baton pass for each character
  • Kichijoji's club also has billiards. There's no actual minigame, but choosing to play billiards strengthens your relationship with every available party member by a small amount
  • Kichijoji has a jazz bar that can grant party members level ups and stat boosts
  • Kichijoji has a temple where you can permanently increase Joker's SP through meditation
  • Kichijoji has a number of shops that offer new services and items
  • Two brand new confidants with their own perks
  • Akechi's social link route has been completely overhauled, slots differently into the story
  • Some confidants (particularly party members) have additional social scenes
  • New events, such as holidays and additional character scenes, have been added to the calendar
  • New Personas
  • New third form for each party member's Persona
  • New enemies
  • New weapons
  • New armour
  • New accessories
  • New items
  • Two new story endings

Gameplay Additions in Persona 5 Royal

  • The Phantom Thieves now have powerful 'Showtime' attacks -- basically tag-team super moves. They're unlocked one by one as the story progresses
  • All Palaces have been reworked to some degree, although largely they remain the same in terms of layout
  • Some Palaces have completely new areas
  • Joker now has a grappling hook that lets you access new areas in dungeons
  • The grappling hook often leads to secret locations that house 'Will Seeds' -- there are three Will Seeds to find in each Palace
  • Each time you find all three Will Seeds in a Palace, you'll be rewarded with a unique accessory
  • Will Seeds also restore a bit of the party's SP
  • All Palace bosses have been reworked in some way, either with additional mechanics or phases
  • Some Palaces now have additional boss-like enemies and encounters
  • Mementos, the randomised dungeon that you can visit when you have free time, has been expanded quite significantly -- floors can be bigger and there's more room for exploration in general
  • Mementos now has a shop that sells exclusive goods in exchange for 'flowers' -- collectables that you find while exploring
  • A new 'stamp' system has been added to Mementos. Stamps can be found on each floor, and you can spend them on three different bonuses: more exp, more money, and more items. Once activated, these bonuses are permanent, unless you decide to reset them
  • There are new side quests to complete in Mementos
  • Rare, unstable shadows can now appear both in Palaces and Mementos. On death, they explode, dealing big damage to all other enemies
  • The Velvet Room now offers special optional battles that you can take part in for various rewards (this is also where DLC battles take place)
  • The Velvet Room can now go into a random 'alarm' mode, which powers up persona fusion and other services, but may also result in unexpected fusion results

Gameplay Adjustments in Persona 5 Royal (Dungeons and Combat)

  • Ammo now restocks after battle, making guns way more valuable across dungeon runs
  • Some Personas have been rebalanced both in terms of stats and available skills
  • Some enemies have been rebalanced both in terms of stats and available skills
  • The baton pass mechanic has been expanded and is available to all party members from the beginning

Gameplay Adjustments in Persona 5 Royal (Everyday Life)

  • The calendar has been reworked in places, allowing for more free time and additional opportunities to interact with your confidants
  • Morgana doesn't tell you to go to bed quite so much -- you generally get a lot more free time at night, even if you can't leave Leblanc
  • 'Assist' mechanic gives you recommendations on which confidant to visit and which stat to improve
  • Confidants can now call you after you hang out with them, giving you an additional dialogue choice and therefore another opportunity to strengthen your bond with them
  • Some confidants have reworked perks

Other Additions in Persona 5 Royal

  • Graphical enhancements on PS4 Pro
  • New opening movie
  • New main menu screen
  • New dialogue text font in the localised release
  • Some dialogue windows have new visual effects
  • New and additional character portraits in conversations
  • Around 30 new music tracks
  • New weather effects have been added depending on the time of year in-game
  • New Game Plus now carries over additional bonuses, like HP and SP increases
  • A completely new Trophy list, separate from Persona 5's

I had this exact same question OP. Glad the pacing is far better - base Persona 5 was fun but it felt way too grindy after a couple hours.
royal was a bit too easy for me. batons pass is way more powerful so combat is a lot easier. it can be as easy or hard as you want it to be.

for social stats/confidants...i maxed out my stats well before the end of the game and out of all the confidants (there are more in Royal) i only didn't max out maybe 4 of them and that's because i didn't want to.

Yes. Ditch P5 and go to Royal.

I also was deep in P5 and decided I should finish it before starting P5R, and that was a mistake.

While P5R adds a lot of great new stuff, more than P3: FES adds or P4: Golden adds, P5 is a such an excruciatingly loooooong game that playing through it twice was exhausting.

All the new powers and abilities make P5R way easier too, so you might consider a higher difficulty level than what you normally use.

So I'm 45 hours in Persona 5, in Okumuras palace. Persona 5 Royal is on sale, should I get it and start over there or just finish Persona 5 vanilla? I hate the pacing of the game btw.
You somehow played 45 hours of a game, bringing you maybe halfway through it, and you are about to start all over again rather than finishing it ?

I have been playing RPGs for 30 years and I would never do this. I would finish the game I managed to dedicate 45 hours of my free time. That's simply my take of course :)

If you get the ultimate edition, you get free persona that are so OP... it's even worst. They also made the platinum much more easier, no way you could do it in one run in original P5.

i wouldn't do that for any other game but it makes some sense for Persona 5. so much is changed. better pacing, quality of life improvements, loads of new content. there is no reason to play Persona 5 anymore. Even if i was 40-50 hours in i'd restart to play the superior version.

I wish I waited in my case... did 2 run of P5... I played P5R until the four palace and overdosed

It's almost a different game.

I mean there's a reason Royal has a 95 metacritic score.

Because of the improvements over original, it's probably in my top 5 best RPG's ever made.

I don't think this will change that much if you was tired after 2 hours lol
Couple of hours can mean more than 2 lol...

I like P5 a lot, just thought the pacing could be better. If this is better in Royal, plus the other additional stuff, since it's on sale in the PS store I'll grab it. I've been meaning to return to it but if Royal is superior to this then I might as well start a new game in Royal.

I see. But is it going to be longer to start again P5R, or to complete P5 ? That's an important information I think.

Will think about it, frankly doing Okumura's palace kinda reminded me why I I've been 3 years trying to finish this game and always end up putting aside for something else.

Eh, keep playing. If you're not a huge fan of the game so far there's no need to waste your money (and another 45 hours catching up to where you've been) on Royal. Buying Royal now after you already own vanilla just seems like an impulsive buy that you'll probably regret.

Will I enjoy Royal if I hated the original after the second dungeon?

I enjoyed all Persona games up to this point, including the PSone ones, but this one was in my head not really salvageable (other than making the calendar bigger and the game "easier"). But I'm curious regardless.

Too much text, (that phone overlay was Shenmue 1 "real-life sim" in 2016 on a 120 hour game levels of horrible) too much recap and generic characters I didn't care for coming left and right.

But, I wonder if I changed as well. Persona 2 IS/EP, Persona 3 and Persona 4 felt like a slamdunk to me.

I don't know, I did P2 / P3 / P4 after and P5 is deffo taking ages (obviously P2 is very slow but that's due to the evolution of gaming in general) so I can deffo see where you coming from.

To answer more your question, I don't think you gonna have a very different experience with Royal. There are a lot of changes and they made some moments less long but its mostly the same trame

Both Persona 2 were slow as hell, I remember falling asleep if I kept playing it late, which is common with old SMT games for me, sepia color pallete and nothing happening on screen.

But it had a lot of soul. I really liked it.

I also snoozed a lot with P5 come to think of it.

I see, I really wanted to like it, and I even finished it ultimately. But after a certain point I was just skipping every wall of text/heart to heart that was story related, and still feeling I wasn't missing anything.

I was in the same boat as you :) to be honest, the sooner you make the change, the better.. so you can minimize how much fast forwarding you have to do... But keep an eye out for the new characters while you zoom through everything~ ;)

Good job! ;)

shame, i enjoyed a lot myself but everyone has a different feeling. What's your favourite one btw? I'm thinking P4G

I didn't play Golden, but I felt Persona 4 on PS2 was very complete, so when Golden came out I didn't feel I was missing much.

In terms of pacing and characters, Persona 4 really is fantastic, it's a definite banger. But I always felt it was somewhat of a tie with Persona 3/3 FES.

Persona 3 plot/setting elevated it, it felt very surrealist and the procedurally generated dungeon crawler sections with "events" (floors with the grim reaper and the like) were interesting to me back then. I doubt I would have time to do it again now, but I've missed the essence of satisfying dungeon crawling on Persona 5, the system was there but the game felt like it was on rails and it didn't feel complete/addicting.

Persona 4, had better pacing and characters, dungeon variety was new and inspiration was top notch. It felt like a step ahead in most things, but it wasn't about saving the world nor did it have the Aerith moments.
I would play Persona 4 Golden if you have not already. It's a much better game.
Now that would be an awesome thing to re-release on consoles.

Damn, I didn't realize Royal is so much additional content. I've been playing Persona 5 from the PS5 PS+ bundle but might want to just buy Royal now.

It is definitely the better game, not just more content, but faster loading, and morgana somewhat stfu about sleeping all the time :p totally recommend, just like p4golden vs p4
