UPDATE 7

-was the ps2 easy to develop for? Or perhaps the ps4 version was touched up? Bc this game feels solid. You can tell they really polished it. Maybe we are just used to games being shipped half finished these days. But man, it just feels rock solid like they did exactly what they wanted and worked out any and every kink they had time for. I still have complaints of course lol, but something about this game screams polished af.

-can’t get the hang of Lu’s overdrive. I’m going in circles super fast but the bar barely fills up. Is there some kind of rhythm to it? The game does a poor job of explaining it

-Ochu did his “low health” Ochu dance. However he was just barely below half health. So it appears the game defines low health as less than half health, possibly... noted 👍

To my knowledge, PS2 wasn't easy to extract power from it, its early games looked like a beefed N64.

I felt the same about the Lulu overdrive. Spinning fast like crazy only took me just above the middle of the bar. I don't remember how things were on PS2.

And, yes, above half HP is the low energy mark. Its the same mark when the char HP meter become yellow on the hud.

I disliked this game very much. I could only get about 5 hrs in before giving up. Linear and boring.
understandable. the linearity is a common complaint, and one that i share. hopefully ffvii remake part 2 can find a good balance between the linearity of X, and the open emptyness of XV.i have kind of lost faith in square these days, and have said as much in other topics. good thing we still have old school FF. maybe give 7, 8 and 9 another go? they have been enhanced and look and play great!

I only like 4 and 12 in the series. I've tried almost every game except the MMOs, mobile games and 15

This was another thing that i tried iwhen i booted the PS2 version and just like i remembered it's much more easier to get more spells with Lulu's overdrive in the PS2 version. Surprisingly this is probably due to the analogue sticks of the Dualshock 2 being more "softer" and easier to perform for that particular move than with the more stiff analogue sticks of DS4.

-I’m missing some of these chests I can see down below, on a lower pathway it seems. I saw a couple shortly after the rest stop where I got the Chocobo, but seemingly no way to get down there. Now seeing more as I approach sin. Hopefully I can go back?

-not gonna lie, I kind of wish they didn’t have nearly every NPC giving me some kind of item just for talking to them. I would walk up and talk to them anyways, as long as the things they had to say kept me interested. This seems like the game is forcing you to talk or risk missing out on some good items (I got a tough bangle earlier for example). Plus, it’s just coming off as uninspired and very “same-y” if that makes sense. No big deal, just another small gripe. I much prefer well hidden chests or a peculiar looking object that I can search.

-Gil is a bit hard to come by. Not sure how much I’m getting from battles, but I never seem to have enough for weapons. I hate passing up that kind of stuff bc I have no idea if it’s my only chance to pick them up. Guess I’ll have to do a bit more grinding (I don’t mind at all tho, I love grinding!)

-not sure what it is, but the dialogue in this game just isn’t as funny or “charming” as the FFs that came before. I remember laughing so much playing though FFIX. There were so many quirky and humorous situations. This one just seems... dry, and a bit lifeless. I tend to blame a lot on VA’s and the fact that it’s not me using my imagination anymore. Or maybe the writers just weren’t as talented 🤷‍♂️ either way something just feels amiss.

-Ixion! Ixion Ixion Aha! So it’s you! Lol didn’t you mention this earlier in the thread? I can’t remember. I considered changing his name to “Sonofabitch” in your honor 😂 jk jk! Cool, welcome aboard, glad to have your spirit aeon along the journey 😊

-The lower level of Mushroom Rock can't be accessed until the endgame, so don't worry about that.

-Most of the NPCs definitely do not give you items in this game. It's just that part on the Djose Highroad where basically every NPC gives you an item (and some back on the Mihen Road too). So yeah, you were just at a section where that happens a lot.

-For gil, make sure to sell off your unused equipment as well. Also, I wouldn't stress too much about missing out on weapons from shopkeepers. FFX lets you fully customize weapons later in the game, and it's moreso the weapons you find in the environment that might be more special.

-As for the dialogue, FF9 definitely has a certain comedic/silly vibe to it, whereas FFX is a bit more serious, but I definitely think FFX is really funny in its own way. Tidus for example is often said to just be a whiner, but for the most part he's just really goofy (and optimistic). Especially in the first half of the game where he has no idea about all the little customs in Spira, I always thought that was funny. Also, you still need to get Rikku, who is one of the funnier ones in the group. As for the writer of FFX, it was Nojima, who also wrote FF7, FF8, and FF7R.

-And yay, you found me! I will aide you on your quest.

-so I went back and got one of the al bhed primer I missed, but it appears IX and X are too far back. Hopefully I will be able to recover them later in the game

There are two Al Bhed primers that are missable in the game, which are found later on in the Al Bhed Home area. Everything else you can go back and get. But yeah, definitely make sure to get those two primers when you get to that spot or else you'll never complete the language side-quest until you start a new file. I would look up a guide on that right when you start that area.

Yeah, I agree that it's harder to rack up the count on Lulu's overdrive in the remaster version for whatever reason.

ok good to now i can go back and the NPCs giving me items thing isnt gonna last the whole lol. i mean im grateful and all but id rather not feel like i have exhaust every single NPC conversation for the whole game, so thats cool. and i havent sold much, so good to know, and i think sublimit said same thing as you, so imma have to sell some fo this extra shit. yeah tidus isnt that bad tbh, and it gives his character a lot of room to evolve, and i dont remember much about rikku so im lookin forward to discovering her character. good to know she brings some funny with her too. thanks for the heads up on the primers!

Don't really have anything to add other than I'm also going to be doing my first playthrough of FFX but on Vita after I finish my first ever playthrough of Peace Walker that I'm currently doing. Will have to check back in and see your thoughts after I'm well into it which should be in the next week or so.

Ah yeah I forgot about that one since it's basically right in your face. Even for the two I mentioned in Al Bhed Home, one is in your main path basically. It's the other one that is hidden and is easily missed. That one screwed me a couple times. lol

Is there an guide that tells you what are the rewards for all minigames in the game? If there is, it should be easy to choose which one to pursue, since I'm not aiming for 100% completion. I've heard that late in the game you can go back to whichever area do you please, is it possible? If positive, can you get whatever you may missed?

This dudes guides are the best. They are simple, easy to read and tell you where items are in each area...

Also, check the issable items FAQ...

Or the entire games item list...

with those FAQs and cross referencing in between them, you should be able to find any items you missed, but you may have to do a bit of the keg work figuring out what you have and haven’t found, plus what you missed for good if anything.

The Alex walkthrough may tell you what items you can go back for, but I don’t want to read that far into the guide bc I don’t want to spoil too much. Other than that, perhaps sublimit and Ixion can help answer any questions about items.

feel free to post your own updates I ironmang , we have like 3 other people playing through and posting ITT as well. It’s been a lot of fun! And I am going super slow so the topic will still be around for a while. Either way, good luck!

To Final Fantasy X was the last good game on the franchise. Amazing battle system, amazing OST and for the time that I played it, the story was amazing.

Last year I got the platinum trophy for it. Such amazing and fun game.

guess I'll play it again.

The guide i used in my second playthrough when i was going for 100% completion was this one by blackestmage:

I loved that Blackestmage also wrote about the story and he/she had a great sense of humor as well. There's really a huge effort and work in it. I don't think anyone today puts so much work in a guide (except FuturePress) but i guess that were the standards back then. The only thing that was missing (if i remember correctly) was a list for Rikku's mix overdrives. My roomate back then who was also playing the game he went out and printed the whole guide (since we had no internet at out flat). :D I still have the photocopies in a folder.

Actually i'm going to use it later in the game at least for the Tonberry trick in the monster arena.

As for my progress i'm currently ready to fight (WARNING big spoiler ahead) :
Yunalesca.Easily the hardest (non-optional) boss in the game for me (and many other people from what i've heard).I don't remember any strategies from the last time i played the game and i will probably die a couple of times even though my characters are probably overleveled for this point in the game.

The more i play the more i realize that this game is the best FF for me. Not only due to the amazing battle system itself (which is my favorite in the series) but mostly due to how much cohesive the game feels. EVERY element in the game is so closely intertwined with each other it's simply amazing. The concept of circle is everywhere not only in the setting and the lore but in gameplay as well. From blitzball to sphere Grid everything in the game revolves around a sphere or circle if you prefer. Even the choice of art and culture of Spira that borrows a lot from aesthetics of east Asian cultures is perfect for the depiction of Spira since the circle as concept and religious symbol has been incredibly important in those cultures. The story of FFX borrows a lot from the philosophical meanings of circle in those cultures IMO.

And i can also say that this game has by far the best soundtrack in the series. The original compositions were incredible but Hamauzu has once again done an incredible work and elevated the music to even higher levels of awesomeness at least for 98% of the tracks.

an internet has-been who used to put out really quality content did a review on FFX years back. He's hard on it, but it's funny imo

I honestly couldn't stand watching him and listening him for more than 5 minutes. Even in those 5 minutes he managed to sound incredibly shallow and cliched regarding the things that supposedly annoyed him in both FFIX and X.

Just won Seymour flux. Had to google some tips though. In the end he wasn't that bad. The only thing bothering me is the two lost mega phoenix potions.

Really like the game. I've a feeling there's not going to be a happy ending...

he got popular around the time AVGN started to, so he had the whole angry schtick. he's not for everyone (he reviewed FF8, 10-2, and 13 as well). i think it's worth watching the whole thing but i can see how he would annoy people

UPDATE 8

GUADOSALAM

-ok recruiting Rikku was weird af. She just shows up, then they have a random impromptu “girl talk”, then yuna wants her to be a guardian, and it just so happens rikku wants to be a guardian too. Uhhh wtf did I miss something? Lol. That was sudden and bizarre but oh well she’s in the party now. Let’s go!

-oh no rikkus level is shit 😩 why you do dis square? Man that’s really annoying. Spent all that time leveling my guys up and they give me rikku completely under leveled. What the hell

-happy to have steal back in my abilities tho! I love steal and mime characters in FF, it adds so much fun and variety to the battle system.

-ok so turns out rikku sphere grid has a lot of HP spheres at the beginning, so she at least gets her health up to a better stat... and I’m only stealing with her at the moment anyway so...

-racked up 20 mega potions and a bunch of hi potions, plus a couple of other various steal items like Antarctic winds, stamina tablet, sleeping powder, dragon scale and poison fang. Mixed a couple Grenada’s that I stolen the beginning of the game and did some decent damage with rikkus overdrive. Looks like she is going to be a fun character!

-just now entering guadosalam...

-customize weapons and armor!? Noice! Forgot about this. What a nice surprise. Seems stealing items might pay off here... can I buy some of these items I need to customize as well? Or are they gathered mostly from stealing? Or are they found by other means?

-Finally won a blitzball game! Without tidus sphere shot it would be near impossible. Was able to get a few lucky high shots thanks to the RNG for the sphere shot. I still think stacking the odds so heavily against the player was a bad move on squares part. The game really can be fun, but it’s so punishing that it sucks the fun out of it. Hopefully I can win a few more along the way. As it is I’m in last place by a country mile compared to the others teams in the league. Not much hope of catching up at this point. Once again, it is punishing, lol... but oh well, just a mini game that is mostly pointless afaik

-talking to the guadosalam residents, seems they are very Yevon indoctrinated. They also view the al bhed and their machines as sacreligious. Interesting...

-as interesting as Maechen’s voice is... it also kind of annoys me. It’s almost like they had the microphone too close to the VAs mouth and you can hear all the P’s, T’s and D’s really pop on the mic, rolling of R’s and more a little too clearly, and it’s almost like I can see the spiddle forming on the corner of his lips... another pet peeve I guess. Thankfully, I really enjoy the information he has so I look forward to talking to him in each area.

-story wise, I’m noticing a theme of unity here. The al bhed repenting for using machina and going back to teachings of yevon. The party reuniting with the dead, Seymour and yuna getting married to help unify Spira, and more. Seems the maesters of yevon are hiding something and also trying to bring everything together at the same time. what for? Power? Are they legit trying to bring peace? I doubt it. Seymour also seems sinister, like he had other motives for wanting to marry yuna. The bit about tidus mom and jecht is still a little unclear. I will need more story to keep unraveling what’s going on, but I am certainly intrigued

-I think I’m about the head to the Thunder plains

-Yuna is hiding something, wonder what that things lord jyscal dropped was exactly?

-and a Macarena joke from tidus! 🤣🤣🤣 wtf that was random. And then he goes ,”Ayyyeee” like they do in the song. Wow lol, blast from the past

-ok I’m saving in the Inn before I head to the Thunder plains. So is this where I want to dodge lightning 200 times? Any tips? Items I should equip? I literally don’t remember anything about this lol. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Gonna stop there and wait for some advice on Thunder plains. I got the day off so I will probably be doing more later today.

You can buy some items needed for customization but the best abilities come from rare items that you either have to steal (which is time consuming) or from bribing monsters which is the fastest way to get them if you have the gil of course. You'll have to look up a guide for that.

-Finally won a blitzball game! Without tidus sphere shot it would be near impossible. Was able to get a few lucky high shots thanks to the RNG for the sphere shot. You get Wakka's best overdrive as a tournament prize which also happens to be the most powerful overdrive in the game. :p You don't need it if you're only aiming to just beat the game though. But for the optional stuff it's a must.

Don't bother with it right now. You should try it much later in the game when you also have a "no encounters" armor.

Fuck. Fighting Yunalesca. Or trying to. I have to rewatch a loooooong cutscene every fucking time I die.

The boss is incredibly annoying too with zombie attacks.
There's a "trick" in that fight that really helps a lot especially during the later phase of the fight but it also depends on how strong your characters are. Holy helps a lot too if you have it.

Edit: BTW i think it would be better if you spoiler-tag your post.

-Regarding Rikku's entrance, yes you did miss something, but you'll probably figure it out later in the game...

-As for Blitzball, I personally think it's actually way too easy except for the in-story game against the Luca Goers. The two things you should have done early on was get Tidus' Jecht Shot move via the mini-game on the boat prior to reaching Luca and then also recruit Ropp from the Al Bhed shop on the Mihen Highroad. He's the best defender in the game and you can hire him for barely any gil. If you didn't do either of those two things, then you'll have to wait for the airship to go back and do them. Also, one of the best goalies in the game, Miyu, can be found on the Moonflow (near Guadosalam). All in all, the fun with Blitzball is mainly about recruiting new players and building out your team. The regular Aurochs squad is shit for the most part, especially early on. I tend to keep Jassu around though since he's a solid defender (along with Tidus and Wakka being great offensive players). But yeah, the Jecht Shot is the biggest factor I would say, since that allows Tidus to automatically shoot past two defenders.

-As Sublimit said, I would just wait until the endgame to do the lightning dodging. That way you can use the easy strategy I posted earlier in the thread.

Fuck. Fighting Yunalesca. Or trying to. I have to rewatch a loooooong cutscene every fucking time I die.

The boss is incredibly annoying too with zombie attacks.

I've found the best strategy against Yunalesca is to make sure you have an Aeon out whenever she transforms and to also leave at least one character with Zombie. She always casts Mega-Death when she transforms (or maybe it's just the last transformation). So let the Aeons take the heat. And if she casts Mega-Death again when there is no Aeon out, it will fail against anyone who has Zombie still on.

It is a 19 years old game.

And now the insta death spell which killed all three with one strike. This is the kind of shit which annoys me in older jrpgs. And yeah, there may be a trick but imo it is pretty unfair to force a player to lose few times to come up with the trick.

The 10 min cutscene again. Yay.

yeah but im specifically requesting to tag spoilers because i dont remember much about the game and want to keep it fresh. its no biggie so dont worry about going back and spolier tagging it, but in future posts if you wouldnt mind id really appreciate it. thanks. good luck with the boss fight tho!

and thanks sublimit sublimit and Ixion Ixion for the tips! will do! kind of happy i dont have to worry about the lightning dodging jsut yet :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It's the only one i'm missing for getting the Learning trophy. I guess now i will have to play the game again halfway through.Thank God i love this game so much otherwise i would have been pissd. :p

In other news i'm right before the end but i'm doing all the side stuff now.The side stuff are gonna take me longer to complete than the time i have spend on the main game so far. :p

Need to relax and take deep breaths lol

Hi mate, my difficulty with getting in to the game was also born of linearity.. to date the only FF i really like is 12, because it has those chances to kind of be an open world bounty Hunter or whathaveyou

Ps. The babe'y black magic chick is a total screen eater in hd, was she this omg in the original? Phew, who needs a main character love triangle when you have that cold vixen in da house

Finished this last night. Except for Yunalesca fight which was just too frustrating and those unskippable cutscenes.... oh boy... other than that I liked the game a lot. X-2 next.
Just lower your expectations A LOT and you may enjoy that as well for what it is. Although there are some weirdos that actually prefer X-2 over X. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

So I've been playing X-2... it is not a bad game, the combat system is actually really good but for some reason the game doesn't hook me. I'm more like "guess I play X-2" than "can't wait to get to play."

Ah. Started chapter 2 and ended up playing some awful minigame which is a version of on-rails shooter.

I tolerated the couple of minigamwa in chapter one thinking it is only for the beginning of the game but evidently not.

Think I'm done. Shame. The combat system is pretty good. Wish there was a tighter story. And no minigames.

That summon is actually not missable. Its just harder to get those treasures later on since they're guarded by post-game superbosses. Sorry, this thread has me all like

Also you only lose out on that summon if you don't
Collect the Destruction Sphere Treasure in Bevelle, but you'd have to be blind not to since the treasure LITERALLY IMPEDES YOUR PATH to the next area.

Unfortunately I was busy today and couldn't play. Maybe tomorrow I could, and post some updates. Kev Kev Kev Kev , Did you manage to play a little more?
Been crazy busy lately 😩 I managed to get through the Thunder plains. About that... I didnt even try to dodge the lightning after a while lmao. it’s so stupidly hard I just didn’t give af. Not even going to attempt the 200 dodges. Still loving the game tho. I’ll get back to it soon...

Yeah FFX-2 is basically mini-game central.Sadly 98% of them are garbage. But i remember there was only one i had to play at some point in order to progress the game. The rest i ignored.

Last time I played it myself was abouts 6 and a half years ago on Vita and I somehow managed to find all the Al Bhed Dictionary words in one playthrough.

Maybe next time I can finally dodge 200 Lightning Strikes as that is a pain in the arse...so is the Chocobo Obstacle Courses.

Strangely like i said in a previous post i tested again the lightning dodging in the original PS2 version and it's actually MUCH more easier than in the HD version. In the PS2 i couldn't even miss a single dodge.

I imagine on Vita it must be even worse of a nightmare.

Is this the one where you have to avoid opening specific chests to get the ultimate weapons for certain characters? I haven't played since the original release.

So I've been playing X-2... it is not a bad game, the combat system is actually really good but for some reason the game doesn't hook me. I'm more like "guess I play X-2" than "can't wait to get to play."

I am in my thirties and as such there are very few games I'd be ashamed of playing in front of my wife.

Final Fantasy X-2 is one of these games.

The job system they implemented is fun but the plot is simply demented. Embarrassingly stupid.
