30 fps killing my eyes! Devs should abandon it!

I'm playing The Last of Us Part 2 these days and my eyes are killing me! I'm trying to avoid camera movements at all costs.

I think that games i played all those years which run at 30 fps and below caused my myopia(especially, playing TES:Oblivion with 15-20 fps for more than 100 hours :messenger_tears_of_joy:). You don't believe it? Here is a literature review about screen time(use of digital devices) and myopia relation: link to scielo.br. They reviewed 9 studies with more than 100.000 participants in total. In conclusion, they can't say it's related for sure but they suspect it may has some effect on it. Maybe someone will do a study about 30 fps vs 60 fps games and their effects on eye problems in future. I think 30 fps does more damage than screen time or resolution.

I think devs should leave this old crap behind. I can handle some low resolution textures here and there. But i can't take this 30 fps bs anymore! It's not healthy at all.

PS: Great game so far btw.

Edit for necromancers: After a suggestion made on this thread 1 year ago, i learned that playing a ps4 game at 30 fps on a 75 hz monitor increases the awfulness of 30 fps. I continued to play The Last of Us 2 (which you can't play on a pc yet) on TV and it was a little more bearable. My thoughts on 30fps haven't really changed, but my frustration eased a bit.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Come mars, the only game I’ll be playing will be Rise on Switch and that game is barely 30... I feel you :(

You need a PC
I have one. It can't emulate Last of us 2.
Do you hear that approaching thunder?

Its the sound of 1000s of frothing at the mouth Sony fans furiously typing up dissertations on why 30fps is perfect for games and super extra cinematic.

What have you done op....WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!
I am one of those Sony fan boys. Someone had to do it for greater good!

Well you just have to accept whatever framerate they put out then, thats what consoles are, a closed system. ND think 30fps is not only fine to play a game in, but its the preferred way for them since they could've downgraded the graphics and gone for 60fps if they wanted to.

We've had 24fps for film for all this time and the current tech for TVs makes low framerate content look like shit. Is that the fault of the media or the display device?

If they prefer it that way, why did they make a remastered version of TLOU:1 which runs at 60fps for ps4?

Weirdly enough, being mainly a PC gamer I'm not having issues while playing that game on handheld. Maybe I'm getting used to it? :messenger_grinning_sweat:

btw don't play it on docked, it has a bug that fucks with the framepacing and make it seem while less fluid.

I bought a 164 hz monitor a month or two before TLOU2 came out and played everything at insanely high framerates. I was worried that TLOU2 would be impossible to adjust but i thought they did a great job making it responsive and not feel like a slideshow.

More recently, i went from Demon Souls at 60 fps to the 30 fps version of Miles and had a really rough time initially. But after 10 minutes i forgot it ever bothered me.

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
I can deal with 15 fps as fluent because im a sixth generation agelord that liked the PlayStation.

Ofcourse, everyone is sensitive to different framerates. Some can only start gaming at 90, whilst others can take 10 fps for granted.

What works, works.

It's not great, but depending on the game it can be "fine" with a controller. Weirdly, Last of us 2 is a game where it didn't bother me. It felt quite responsive and it seems to have high quality motion blur that masks it quite well. of course, they should have already patched it for ps5. No excuse.

I turned off motion blur because it makes me sick even more.
What is it with all the troll threads recently?
Am i look like a troll to you(besides my avatar)? Are you happy with your 30 fps games? Or did you triggered because your beloved consoles(ps, xbox, switch, whatever) criticized? "lollipop_disappointed:

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I tend to opt for 30fps modes with higher resolution and other graphical perks in games like Miles Morales (PS5) and Cyberpunk (XSX). I've just never been that sensitive to FPS as long as they're stable. I do prefer 60, but not if there's much trade off in resolution, ray tracing, crowd density etc.

Yes 30fps is horrific. I recently got uncharted something legacy to try on ps5 and to ny absolute surprise and dismay: no unlocked framerate mode. I was like wtf?! The game looked like absolute shit when i moved the right stick. Even in the options it says to turn down motion blur to help with nausea. I finished the first section where u escape that market in the back of a truck or some shit and then immediately dropped the game until naughty dog get their shit together and patch it.
Its embarassingly bad. I can only imagine tlou2. Im waiting for a 60fps patch to ff7 remake.

The game was already made for PS3 and then they were porting it to a brand new system with more horsepower so they didn't have to change the vision to gain more frames, they just used the extra power of the PS4.

What kind of TV do you have, did you buy a new one recently? TLOU2 can have some pretty unpleasant motion when panning the camera whether motion blur is maxed, partially on or off, what setting is motion blur on?

If you just bought an OLED(or LCD with much faster pixel response time than you had on the old TV) and motion blur is off then thats the problem, you need to turn it on to avoid the stutter you are seeing. You'll reduce temporal resolution by turning it on but does it really matter if its that unpleasant when its off?

30 fps runs awful on pc compared to consoles for some reason
Because, to be fair, you’re unlikely to be playing a 3rd person narrative driven game on pc. It will more likely be an FPS, RTS, MMO.

I’m king of the frame rate nerds, but TLOU is ok to play, especially as it’s steady.

I actually think a lot of what console people used to think was Nintendo ‘magic feel’ was simply that a number of their first party titles hit 60fps. Certainly more regularly than others.

Word is it's a paid patch with a full next gen version, so maybe it'll be 30 fps again? If you turn on ray tracing, it will absolutely ensure 30 fps. Who knows.

Why do all these franchises keep using the word "Rise" all the time?

I kinda notice this too. I can't play anything on PC that's below 60fps, but in some console games I think it's fine (like in MH Rise). Could it be that the console changes the refresh rate of the screen to adapt to the game's framerate or something?

Agreed. No excuse for lack of 60fps options on the next gen consoles, fortunately that seems to be the trend. I would have bought WD legion, but passed due to the lack of optimization.

It’s really up to the console platforms to prioritize and demand this from devs. It shouldn’t be a PC only feature or means for selling the game twice to people/double dipping.

Most PC games default to 60, so you notice the change more when you switch to 30fps. But a 30fps game on PC will play the exact same as a 30fps on console.
