Pirates of the Caribbean Was the Best Movie Trilogy Post-LOTR

(ok, the first movie came out the same year as Return of the King, but whatever)

Been addicted to Sea of Thieves for the last week+ so I re-watched the initial POTC trilogy this week (in 4K!) and these really were the best trilogy following LOTR.

The Matrix sequels sucked, the internet hated the Star Wars Prequels (but now seem to love them). Probably the closest trilogy since these would be John Wick, but that's going to be on-going and not stop at just 4.

The first movie shouldn't have worked. It was based on a theme park ride, and Haunted Mansion was garbage. But they made a fun pirate movie that just barely mentioned the ride and it was a huge hit.

When that happened they had to reverse engineer the first movie and mine ideas from it (the compass, etc) to make a trilogy...and it worked. The second movie expanded the universe and gave us the best CGI character ever in a film...in broad daylight at that:

Then the third movie wrapped everything up and nailed the landing in a way most third movies fail to do.

Just DO NOT watch the 4th movie. It's slow and boring and wasted a great book. They just bought the rights to On Stranger Tides for the title and the Blackbeard and Fountain of Youth plot points, but is nothing like the book (which inspired Monkey Island).

But if you re-watch the trilogy, DO follow it up with a viewing of the fifth movie. It's a direct sequel to the trilogy (and set up a sixth that won't happen. It's a combination of The Force Awakens and The Wrath of Khan and the fourth movie can just be ignored and Dead Men Tell No Tales is the sequel to the first trilogy.

Oooo. yea, The Bourne series wins here. They also got a bit goofy as they went, but all were enjoyable.

I love them both so much, Raimi Spider-Man too

Pirates lost me after that dumb movie where homeboy had an Octopus for a head

I still haven't seen any of them.

Everything I know about Pirates of the Caribbean I learned from Kingdom Hearts 2. Ballin' music.

Nah, Spidey 3 was underrated,

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that Harry's arc over the three films was easily one of the most interesting I've ever seen in any trilogy ever and he made one hell of a heel turn.

Also this was awesome; pure cinema

I actually loved the three villains too. Made it feel like the comic books. The one baddie at a time thing in most comic movies never sits well with me.

Haven't watched any of the films in forever I should give it a re-watch. Bout to finish up the hobbit trilogy and I'm planning to re-watch the avengers movies and then I think I'll make this next in line (after the second spiderman movie with tom holland tho never saw that one).

Disagree. 1st is incredible. 2nd is mediocre and 3rd is a mess. Didn't bother with any after that. Were 4 or 5 any good?

Pirates 3 was weak, and all I really remember was the boats vs boats circling the drain scene.

It terms of the strength of individual films within the trilogies, I have to agree with anyone who said Dark Knight. 3 was, again, weaker, but the first two were very strong. Spider-Man was fun, but I don’t enjoy 2 as much as others do and once again the 3rd is weak.

That can ONLY mean that there have been no half, quarter decent movie trilogies since LOTR. It cannot possibly have anything at all to do with how good those movies are 🤣

I think the Iron Man trilogy is pretty amazing myself. Well written, well acted, good action.
If only 2 was better it seriously could've been one of the best trilogies. 1 is a classic and I don't know why people don't like 3. 3 was so good.

No. Pirates 2 was fucking terrible and 3 wasn't much better. 1 is the only good Pirates movie.

Spider-Man 3 is a hilariously bad movie overall and should be defended by nobody even if it has moments of greatness.

Bourne is the only other valid answer in this thread, they're all excellent. The other answer in terms of consistent quality is How To Train Your Dragon. All 3 are great, and any one could arguably be the best depending on your preference.

Close. The back half of Cap 1 is really rough and drags the whole film down. You could argue also that 3 is held up by being part of something much bigger and is barely even a trilogy. 2 is really where the Cap movies shine, what a gem.

I only really liked the very first Pirates of the Carribean. I think that they went too far with the Carribean-folklore mythology stuff in the subsequent movies. Or in other words: Too much voodoo shit for me.
I recognize that there are good superhero movies out there that form a good trilogy but superhero stuff (aka capeshit) just isn't for me, tbh. I am just not nerding out over Marvel and DC stuff. But I understand the popularity.
I'd probably go with the John Wick movies, I had a lot of fun watching them.

Yeah at the end it would be upto everyone's personal preferences. Action fans would probably go for something like John Wick. I personally loved all 3 Captain America movies, each more than the previous. 3 showed it perfectly how far he is willing to go for his friends, morals and how he'll do the right thing even though he is outlawed.
2 is definitely a gem, no arguments there.
It's fascinating how MCU made me love the character, I hate him in the comics.

Yeah, I can't give points to John Wick because they're already making 4 and 5 (at least), it's only a trilogy until the 4th is released. At least with something like Indiana Jones or Bourne it was very clearly a trilogy that they came back to try and ruin later.
