Xbox getting harder dominated then back in 2013? Maybe I got the numbers wrong in my head but wasn’t the first year especially the first months pretty much neck on neck last gen? 0.5 million or 25% more ps5 sold then Xbox feels huge especially if you compare how scarce ps5 seems to be and Xbox also hard to obtain but not nearly as difficult.

So Switch also sold more than all others combined in the US? That's pretty crazy considering it's almost four years old and never had a price drop - in fact I paid less for my launch Switch than I would need to pay now if I bought one.

All about momentum. 360 was great but Microsoft dropped the ball with XOne so ofcourse most won't opt for it's successors. if Series X/S have great games, then the next one will sell well too.

Same in my country right now, the price of Nintendo Switch is increasing instead of decreasing lol.

Looks more like both Xbox also sold out but they had fewer units to sell for some reason (supply chain related perhaps). Wouldn't really say PS5 sold better (and it's only been 2 months anyway), can only comment that there were more PS5s to buy ("buy" lol, buy a bot and try to buy is what I mean)

Launch consoles getting outsold by an older and underpowered competitor is hilarious.

Nintendo right now:

Once you get your head out of your ass and realize the reality........ps5 xbx ser x sold out within minutes ...

What a brilliant launch! Not enough product to meet demands. Why didn't they just delay the launch?

"Realize the reality" is extra special. 🙃

How many do you think they could manufacture in a pandemic, based on their advanced components while Switch was outdated the minute it was revealed and launched. Using a stock pile of old Nvidia chips vs, being on the same 7nm process and same cpu arc as the hottest cpu line in the market are not comparable. It's 4x as hard to make PS5's/ XBX series, and also their price as well. On top of how much room they take up in freight compared to switch.

God some people are complete moron's.

Astonishing really.

I wonder whether Sony or MS are considering a handheld.
Handheld? No. Mobile VR headset + console (i.e. hybrid) unit? I'm hoping. Doing such a thing properly requires more tech muscle (with todays tech) than Nintendo is willing to invest, so it's up to MS and sony.

I think they might entertain both.

Japan is a warning sign for Sony. There could, as strange as it may seem, come a time where the US switches to preferring handheld. A young generation are being trained to play in that form factor. Of course, desktop will *always* remain, but the market might not grow in the same way that handheld does.

Personally, I’d love to see Sony release a Vita 2. MS obviously have their cloud gaming strategy so I expect them to come out with an x-handheld of some description.

And this is the key components that makes some get extra pissy every time there is a news about Switch selling well.....especially in NeoGAF when too many people put too much value in "graphics" above everything else.

To be fair they have different demographics.

Nintendo Switch has sold 9 million units in a single year. The feat that was never done by any playstation consoles before.

Nintendo Switch in 2020 is second only in dollar sales behind 2008 Wii.

Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling console of the generation.

Nintendo Switch hasn't received a single official price drop after nearing 4 years on the market.

Nintendo Switch was having stock problems in the US during the holiday months last year.

Nintendo Switch managed to dominate during the holidays without any megaton release like mainline Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon.

Nintendo Switch has outsold PS4, PS5, XBO, and XSX/S combined in 2020.

Would you mind providing a source for those numbers?
Not that I doubt them.
We all know Ps5 and Series X|S sales are horrible low

I do think the USA is following Japan's lead when it comes to tech trends, and that includes an assumption that we'll be "mostly handheld" over here within the next decade or so.

Untrue to your first line.

You need to also list your source for these numbers.

Here's mine:

Sony sold a total of 6.1 million PlayStation 4 gaming consoles in the third quarter of fiscal year 2019, falling short of its overall total from the corresponding quarter of 2018. Around 17.8 million PS4 units were sold in 2018, a relatively successful figure considering that five years have passed since the console’s initial release. Sales of PlayStation consoles generally tend to peak in the company’s third fiscal quarter, which is the fourth calendar quarter, as people begin to prepare for the holiday season.

At EU series s have been available on stores quite easily on many countries.

Like, not even sold out on launch on some places and is off the shelf item

This is assuming that they compete in the same market. They do not, the userbases of Switch and consoles overlap a lot, meaning that the switch audience usually also has either a PC or a high end console.

I mean, Nintendo fans are gloating, and fair enough, but they forget the market for high end games is PS5, Xbox and PC combined. They are not really competitors, the market for high end games isn't drying up, on the contrary, it's growing.

The switch also combines the userbases of the 2 previous Nintendo platforms into 1, you no longer have the Wii and DS, or Wii U and 3DS, now it's just the switch. Given that the 3DS sold around 75 million units and the Wii U sold about 15, that's about 90 million units that the Switch captures. So the sales are around where one would expect them to be.

So, it's good sales for the handheld market, but it's just that, the handheld market. It is not in competition with the high end one.

Nintendo handhelds have always sold very well. I don't know why people keep comparing to consoles. They're really targeting different gamer demographics. Nintendo made got out of the spec race a long time ago, and decided they preferred to print money instead. It doesn't make the feat less impressive, but I don't know if the Switch can really be compared to the PS5 and XSX. It's kinda playing its own sport right now, while the consoles are competing in a whole other arena. I think comparisons between Nintento and Sony/MS ended with the GC. The strategies have diverged considerably since then. I'm glad too, because Nintendo is thriving, which is great because they make amazing games.

Nintendo got another win the Switch. Impressive numbers indeed.

Considering the US is by far Xbox’s main market and where the culture more closely matched the brand and its fans, it’s a big ouch. And Series aren’t off to a better start.

Woah, Switch. Not surprised the next gen launches weren’t better, it was a pain in the ass to find my Series X and I got very lucky.

Props to Nintendo though. And they didn’t even have that great of a 2020 software wise imho. The only Nintendo games I bought this year were for one of my kids.

Nintendo relied heavily on ACNH and evergreen games in 2020

Expect VR/AR to be a MAJOR driving force for 10th-gen Sony/Microsoft systems. One or both of them might go for a mobile VR solution as something to supplement (and being compatible with their home effort, likely the mobile being a cloud streaming device), but their 10th-gen systems will absolutely look to push VR & AR out of the box.

They kinda need to in order to have value proposition by the time 10th-gen rolls around; better graphics and faster storage won't be strong selling hooks anymore, even for hardcore/core gamers.

my bigger question is why they should be upset about Switch selling well if don't care for "underpowered" system in the first place?

They shouldn't. I don't have the Switch but I borrowed it and the games are great. I used it as handheld only and played games while watching TV at same time. It's a cool concept and I might actually buy Switch 2/Pro.
