Xbox Raises Price of 6-month Gold Sub to $59.99 (Up: Policy reversed, prices to stay the same)

I own all the three consoles including GamePass and PS Now.

If you only play games that are on GamePass, you're missing out on 95% of the games worth playing.

Not to mention most of the games on GamePass (and PS Now) were nowhere near full price when they arrived on GP. The majority of these games are $19.99, unless a sale is going down where they can drop as low as $4.99.
Good points. I have all three consoles too, XBSX, PS5 and Switch.

Even with both PS5 and XBSX consoles being new and just released I have yet to pay over $30 for a new game including Assassin's Creed Valhalla (BB $40 - $10 bonus), Watch Dogs: Legion ($30) and Immortal Fenyx Rising ($30). I could have also jumped on Cyberpunk 2077 a few days ago for $30 but decided to leave it for now until the true next gen upgrades.

These value comparisons are just silly because people from either side are ignoring a lot of factors that can influence costs. The bottom line is, Game Pass is a good value. PS+ is a good value. Xbox Live Gold is now a terrible value.

What the fuck is this. At least the PS5 owners played some good games along the way.
Who in their right mind pays full price for every game?

Spoken like a true sony fanboy, real gamers recognize that there are great games on both consoles. And lots do, even if they don't I haven't accounted for the 6 month old games that come for free on gamepass worth $30-$40.

Are there folks who want to play online but dont want gamepass ultimate subscription?

They are shafted bad. Especially if you own a ton of titles.

I personally would take gamepass ultimate and would buy one off titles that i wanna play thats not available.

This is how MS wants you to use it, like it or not.

This is what a lot of people miss. If you just wait and buy games on sale, you'll get a good bit of what Game Pass offers. You won't have access the the quantity of Game Pass games, but you'd get more of the games you actually want.

Game Pass only really makes sense for gamers who typically play through all their games and are always looking for something new. For them Game Pass is a great discovery tool. But if you're a normal gamers who has a backlog they still haven't gotten through, all Game Pass does is cost your more for games you normally wouldn't play.

Now this could change when MS's first party studios start kicking out great game that are available Day 1 on Game Pass, but they have to prove they can actually make great games. They also have to do it without substantially increasing the price of Game Pass, which I seriously doubt they can do.

Fanboy or not that was not a good summary. Any gamer who wants to not spend lots of money has many options on both consoles to not spend that kind of cash and play many good games. On switch on the other hand..

They need to be aware of the backlash and get in front of this because it’s terrible.
Coming from someone who has been a Gold member for 16 years.
It's too late even if they get in front of it. They haven't changed from their Xbox One days, just waiting for their next screw you moment.

I'm not an Xbox user but I've been sending a lot of praise towards the way of Microsoft this generation. I thought they were doing a far better job this time around, and Game Pass is a great deal. I even considered getting a Series S.

After reading this, I'm not so sure anymore. That is a shame. I can't praise this.

This seems like such a bad move on every level. One step forward and two steps back for them. Xbox Live Gold isn't doing anything special to warrant a price increase, especially when PC users exist under the same ecosystem and play online for free. You also have to have Gold to play F2P games where as Playstation and PC don't require that of you. This comes across as terribly anti-consumer. Not a good look for them at all. Especially after all the good things they have been doing.

I just realized that Halo Infinite multiplayer is free but you’ll need to pay $120 a year to play it.

It’s bizarre to me that people buy an Xbox when they mostly play games like fortnite, apex and warzone and they have to pay to play online, these fuckers used to put Netflix behind a paywall LOL.

It’s time for Microsoft just fuck off and get out of gaming. They haven’t been doing anybody any favours for many many years now.

How much do you want to make a bet that elder scrolls 6 will have some type of important online but single player features which will be locked behind gold.
Or $10(plus tax) a month for the "free" to play Halo infinite.

It's a damn mess.

Oh, but I thought MS would never increase the price of their services and that they don't need to make the money they invested in Bethesda and other studios back because they are so rich and new top productions would arrive to Gamepass free day one with a super low monthly price.

So I guess businesses do need to eventually turn a profit and need to begin recouping that investment elsewhere.

You guys did want them to be the Netflix of gaming, so, welcome to paying the prices of Netflix. ;)

No more dumb than completely ignoring the value and yes, day one games that gamepass will be providing over the next 5 years.
What value? Paying for old ass/mediocre games I wouldn’t even buy to begin with isn’t value. FOH with that “value” horse shit. XBL is now the worst deal in gaming.

Most gamers buy a few games a year if at all. Few people are paying full price for games other than COD, Madden and GTA and those games aren’t on GP. This stupid “deal” forces you to pay for a rental service to get games you never asked for and on top of that you need to subbed to the service to even play games that are supposed to be F2P. There is no option to play games without this stupid “deal”.

I don’t know who you’re trying to deceive with that comparison but it isn’t working. Casual gamers don’t spend hundreds of dollars a year on new games, they play free games like Warzone and Fortnite with Madden and COD sprinkled in. The casual gamer MS is targeting with the XSS doesn’t give two shits about GPU and its library of budget games they’ve never heard of, they just want a cheap box to play COD and Fortnite on and the XSS completely fails in that regard. There is no way to spin this as a positive for Xbox, it’s a terrible “deal” anyway you look at it.

Get out of gaming so Sony can charge 800 for a console and 90 for a game? No thanks

With how hard MS is leaning into making money from online play, this is going to put a lot of pressure on them to make their first party games have at least some online component. This is how they went from Fable to that Fable Legends abomination.

This isn’t anti-consumer, because consumers have the ability to track down a PS5 or Switch and forget about Xbox forever. They overwhelmingly have been. Then there is PC.

It‘s a move that is really only anti-Xbox.
Millions of people just bought a next gen Xbox without knowledge of this upcomming substantial price hike. What are they supposed to do now? Buy a PS5 for $500? At the very least, MS should have published this change before launching a new console.

Exactly, anyone in the ecosystem got screwed. Anyone outside can walk away. Gamepass isn’t that appealing on a quick browse through the library, if you see 1 or 2 games you like, you can get them for the cost of Chipotle for two. So that won’t convince anyone to drop cash on a new Xbox just to get at the insane value.

It’s not just dumb, it’s probably the death of a brand that is scraping by on dad energy.

It's what I've been saying for a year now; MS has sold their leadership on this idea that they can compete with the kind of numbers iOS app store is putting up with people playing AAA games on touch screens lol

2 unproven things.. cloud streaming and expensive monthly gaming services... somehow are going to bring in more customers than game consoles.
Well this is the same company that shipped their previous console with Kinect and Cable TV integration as a major feature.

Unfortunately they do seem deranged.

I expect Sony to PR the hell out of this with all kinds of ads making fun of MS

Then once they have sold enough PS5 consoles, raise their subscription prices.

Report me for "Sony fanboy" comments.

Okay, done. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good for you, but its hard not to tell it like it is when people are saying that 95% of games that are good are not on xbox. Back here is reality thats simply not true. The reason for the ban and the tag in the first place was silly, I guess nobody should speak out here against an opinion that involves ms having any good games. Just getting silly.

I'm not even an xbot, I play my ps5, my switch, my pc, and the odd android game - all have good games and all have value.
But there needs to be some balance here.

Xbox gold is now, agreed, a bad value. (For those who are new and can't renew - so existing customers who pay yearly are still fine)

What I was arguing was that gamepass is a good value Most on this board who actually have it, agree. Its hardly a collection of crappy games like you portray it, and it will have even more value going foreward as the ms studios finish games over the next coming years and the aaa titles are included.

The most annoying thing is when people act like gamepass is a good value for everyone. I have a 400GB data cap and like to own my games, gamepass has zero value to me. I downloaded the free Cold War trial last week and was like welp I guess I'm not downloading anymore big games this month. Microsoft trying to force people into gamepass is just gonna push away long time Xbox owners like myself.

Gamepass is only good when every other option to buy games is supported equally, trying to strongarm your fans to subscribe to a service they don't want is just gonna push them away. Stupid move all around.

All those cod/fifa/madden/fortnite players highly upset :messenger_tears_of_joy: . That includes my bro. He continues to buy an xbox when he can do that(play Madden and Cod) on Playstation. Just a habit he's developed over the years since 360, it's mental. He's mad right now but knowing him, he'll probably just accept it.

EDIT: Damn they killed that shit fast lol

They shouldn’t really have needed an outcry to realise that this was a stupid idea, but good that they have course corrected so quickly. Gold is irrelevant to me now so I didn’t get upset, but they’d be better getting rid of it than increasing the price...
