I'm torn here, last night the missus pissed off to bed early so I decided to watch Infinity War on my newish telly, it wasn't long before the enivitable yell of "Will you turn that fucking down" came wallowing down the stairs...

So I've decided to buy a set of headphones that can connect to the TV (LGCX bt5.0) so that I can enjoy a few explosions without getting stern looks at breakfast the following morning.

I also plan on buying a PS5 later in the year so I'd like them to be compatible with the PS5 and it's tempest 3D engine which sounds on paper quite decent.

So chaps, what's the best set to go for? Are the XM3's compatible with this tempest engine or am I better going with the pulses? I mainly want to listen to movies late at night but also have the option to use them on the PS5, decide for me please cause I can't find a definite answer on the net as my googlefu is shite, cheers.

go WH-xm4 or WH-xm3 if price is an issue.

i have WF-xm3 earphones and they are great. If you don't mind earphones then I'd highly recommend them. They are great sounding and obviously cheaper than even WH-xm3 headphones.

Not concerned about price, not an audiophile so dropping £500+ on headphones would be a waste, I just want something that can wirelessly connect to both the telly and eventual PS5, bonus if it'll connect to my Jet engine Pro

If price isn't an issue and you care about noise-cancelling at all, get the XM4s. The noise-cancelling is incredible.

for gaming you would prefer the DT 990 over the 770 because the dt are closed style headphones while the 990 are open style, you can hear directions better with open style headphones.
The Sony option is 300$/€ ? then maybe you also have the option on going DT 1990, its one step above the 990 and incredible good for its price. You'll never need to upgrade again.
990 or 770 are great headphones as well.

The xm3 are great if you want anc. If not they are over priced for sq alone but the ANC is top tier so worth it if you will use it. I have the beyerdynamic amiron wireless which sound much better then the xm3 or 4 but no ANC and the stock pads suck. Because of this you can find them for quite a bit under MSRP and just invest in Dekoni Audio Elite Sheepskin pads and together you will have the best sounding bt headphones.

After a Pulse Headset that i had a couple of years ago and then buying some Sony XB950 headphones (discontinued) I promised not to buy official Playstation headphones, they are useless. I imagine this case is similar, go for the XM3 with noise cancellation

Don't need noise cancelling, these will purely be used in my living room in the evenings, they need to be wireless to the TV, does Dolby Atmos work with headphones?? For gaming doesn't bother me if they're plugged into the controllers, but does the tempest engine work when wired to the controller??

Keep in mind that in general Sony consoles (PS3 and PS4) have a very closed bluetooth compatibility with different devices, even with official Sony headphones. The Sony XB950 that I mentioned, I had to occupy them connected to the Dualshock 4, or in the case of PS3 pairing them with Bluetooth but to the TV, if you go for the XM3 I would first make sure that the PS5 is compatible or otherwise that your television can connect with that headphones

OP wait!! I got bluetooth earbuds for my ps5. I also have the lg cx. Listen,
The ps5 doesnt allow bluetooth audio devices to be used.
Also if you connect them to the tv, the lgcx comes out of game mode. And the option to turn it on disappears!! Therefore all these bluetooth headsets for ps5 arent an option! Dont make the mistake i did. Just get rhe pulse headset. It does the job fine. Not amazing or anything. I should add i tried to use sony wf-xb700 earbuds.

I should also add the tv has no issues with this when i use my xss. I think its because the xbox has ALLM which forces the tv to remain in game mode. Its weird as fuck.

1. You won't be able to use the XM3's with the PS5 wirelessly, and even if you could I'd go for the XM4's as they have slightly larger ear cups and can be paired with multiple devices.
2. I'd go with the pulse 3d headset if they're just going to be used with PS5.

Why? What is wrong with plugging the XM3's into the Controller? You save on battery life, can still move around and the sound will be way better.

The 1000xm line is the new gold standard. I have the xm1’s and even those are light years ahead of what is even out now. I think they are on xm4?

Can the PS5 output 3D audio via the controller to a wired headphone? Defo leaning towards the XM3's here as they seem to keep popping up

I have both plus wf. For ps5 I always use pulse.

be aware that pulse don’t use Bluetooth, also the volume is not that strong, good is battery, I charge pulse 1 time a week, the others 2 Sony headphones I have to charge multiple times a day.
pulse is also better for mic 🎙 with more settings and buttons on headphones

Wirelessly? I thought PS5 doesn't let you use bluetooth headphones or am I missing something?

XM3 is a much higher quality product, and with Sony's 360 Reality tech compatibility it should have spot on locality for gaming as well. Now I'm not sure if the sound volume will be enough via DS 3.5 jack. I have Pulse 3D and the quality doesn't seem to change much when turning it off and use it wired via DualSense, same for volume. I'm more than sure XM3 is a much better headset and even myself considered one, but Pulse 3D is very impressive. I'm waiting for someone to test them both. But this guy might have an answer using it via bluetooth:

But wired 100% will work, any headset actually as PS5 is using PCM via 2.0 channel for 3D audio.

Yes. 3D audio works with any headphones plugged into the controller or with any headphones plugged into the console via USB cable or wireless USB dongle. Won’t work with things like headphones plugged into a receiver or a headphone base getting audio via an optical out cable from the TV etc.

I went with Steelseries Arctis 7X as I’m not an audiophile at all and hate having a wire plugged into a controller while playing and those were the best in my budget that would work with Xbox Series X and PS5 (and everything else). Xbox uses a different wireless frequency and the dongle fo those has a toggle switch for Xbox and USB (for everything else).

I'm going to give this a go and compare it against my Pulse 3D and report back this week when I get my PS5. I have the same headphones the guy in the video has so should the results should be interesting.

Let's not forget that Pulse 3D is using low-latency 2.4GHz lossless wireless connection, so bluetooth is lossy and could have some minor latency that won't bother most gamers.

You can't be serious?

@OP: Is this even a contest? The active noise cancellation on the XM3's alone should be enough, on top of the better sounding audio. You only have to plug it in your controller, but is that a problem? I have a Wireless Platinum (which sounds better than the Pulse 3D), but I only use my Bose QC35II's. It's more comfortable, the sound is comparable, but it has that sweet active noise cancellation.

If I'm not wrong when connected via 3.5 jack there is no noise cancelling?

Humans are much more sensitive to audio latency than visual. And personally I'd never go wireless for any kind of audio experience I really cared about. Even if it's not lossy we live in extremely electromagentically busy homes these days, dropouts can and will happen. To say nothing of the fact that lossless audio is useless if the drivers and amp in the headset are crap (and they always are in gaming headsets). People need to stop buying into this "gaming" branding. It's always. always, always without fail just there to sell you features you don't need and / or to sell you an inferior product at a higher price.

OP: Get yourself a good old fashioned set of wired headphones from a reputable manufacturer (ideally with a replaceable cable) and never look back.

I didn't notice a dip in quality nor volume when turning off the Pulse 3D and using it wired via DS. But we need to know it's using bluetooth even if the DS has a RealTek audio chip that helps. So my guess if it's 328kbps then it's not a problem, but when high quality 3D audio comes in with higher bitrate I think it's essential to have 2.4GHz connection wirelessly. If they had a 3.5 jack on the console itself that would help much.

I wish console manufacturers would take a leaf out of Sony's book...from 25 years ago. The launch model PS1 is coveted as a decent CD player for a reason.

I hope you're not talking about those scary ones that cost a fortune. :messenger_fearful:
You certainly can go down that route, just like you can spend $1500 on a set of headphones. I'd argue that's well into the range of diminishing returns though :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Of course if you've got kids perhaps wireless is more suited after all...I have enough trouble not tripping over my headphone cable, let alone a 3yr old...

I've used 1000X, 1000XM2 and 1000XM3 in my job, really liked them. Got myself some XM2s, someone say on them and I claimed the insurance on them and got XM3s, had them for ages now and still love them, the reduction in hiss on the noise cancellation from XM2 to XM3 is great so definitely get XM3 at least.

My girlfriend has had XM4s for a few months and I tried them for 10 mins, the ear cups are indeed more comfy and it has some more quality of life features (That you probably won't use in your described situation) so if you can get XM4 for around £30/$50 more than the XM3 then I say go for it, but otherwise just go for the XM3s.

So, as the zebra man said, the XM3 is prob the best deal right now, in the UK right now they are £70/$100 cheaper than the XM4s. If you were going to use them in a situation where you will say, work with them on and take them on and off to speak to people a lot then get the XM4 as they have a feature that auto stops/pauses the input when you take them off (Little sensor in the earcup), you didn't mention that, but thought I'd say just in case you might also use them for work after intially just for TV watching at night.

The real issue might be connecting them to the TV in a way that doesn't have a latency/a delay, I know internal bluetooth on TVs is notoriously shit but if you do have problems then you could still get something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=bluetooth+headphone+audio+transmitter&ref=nb_sb_noss - pop one of these in the headphone port on the telly and the TV will just think physical headphones are plugged in so you won't get the issue that Calverz Calverz described with his CX (Cal, I tagged you because maybe that product can help you too). If you don't get the cheapest one then you won't have any latency problems and you can even get one that supports two simultaneous connections so the wife can have her headphones connected at the same time and you won't have to hear her horrible voice. You can tell her the noise cancelling is off and just nod occasionally to make it seem like you can hear her, double win!

What exact TV model do you have? It will be written on a white or grey sticker on the back of the TV, it will start with a number than represents the screen size diagonal, ie 50 if you have a 50", 65 for 65", etc. If you tell me that I'll make sure it has a headphone port, as some premium Samsung sets haven't for a while.

I just got a new CREAM recliner, not my choice of colour but I'm coming around to it. I feel like a drug dealers wife*.

* Story: One time after T in the Park we got stranded because we had no money for the bus back to the town with the train station. We met this woman who was scavenging tents and stuff left behind, she was driving a van with her 6 year old son in the back and we gave her all the money we had left and she gave us a lift back to hers for a sandwich and then onto the train station. The whole time she was going on (in front of her 6 year old son) about how she had been taking so much speed (and how they made lots of money from selling said speed) the last couple of days that her jaw was aching and when we got to the house everything in the whole living room was white/cream and the FULL ceiling was a mirror.

So thats why I always make a joke about white/cream lounge furniture being exclusively bought by drug dealer/swingers.
