You all refer to Resident Evil (old school) as tank controls and this is very much that.
It isn’t though. Tank controls mean only being able to walk forward and having to stop and turn to change directions and then walk forward again, no moving and aiming at the same time etc.

This is just fixed camera and your character just walks in whatever direction you press the stick without needing to stop and turn. Did some of you only play the remakes that made the tank controls in the old RE games optional or something?

This kind of game is exactly why gamepass is so great. I wouldn't have wanted to spend $50+ on this, but because it's on gamepass I've played for 4 hours and am loving it. Probably my favorite horror game since RE7.
Love hearing stuff like this. And while it's good to read some reviews good or bad, it's a good feeling to say you love something just by trying it out for yourself. Granted it's on Gamepass of course lol

Just noticed you can't start games on Series X while their downloading an update unlike PS4/5. Is this only because of gamepass?

Let's see if the update changes anything...

Maybe it's just Gamepass. I swore that you could start a game when it was installing last time I remembered...Could be wrong.

So how are impressions here so far? Haven't started it yet.
Plenty in the thread for you to read through...

I’d say most, myself included, are enjoying it well enough. Key is going in knowing it’s more a combo of a walking sim and point and click type adventure game vs. an RE/SH type survival horror game and that it’s a lower budget AA game and not some system seller exclusive (i.e. ignore the console warring trolls on both sides treating it as such since it’s first non-cross gen Xbox Series X|S game since launch).

I’d say it’s not something I’d be happy with if I’d spent $50 on it, but I’m glad I’m playing it on Gamepass as I’m enjoying it and it’s scratching a different itch than things I‘ve played lately or plan to play in the near future.

Did not realize it was fixed camera. Guessing because the dual-world system they use was already hard enough on some hardware configs, giving us the ability to pan the camera around would've been too much, maybe?

Edit: Apparently I was mistaken. Camera is not static/fixed in the way I was thinking, based on what people were saying.

So far I love it. Fixed camera kinda sux but you get used to it pretty quickly. I'm really sucked into the story and the way it's unfolding. Love the visuals and sound. People have complained about the voice acting, but I think it's pretty decent. I would say it's my favorite horror game in this genre and my 2nd favorite of any genre after Dead Space.

I think whether or not you end up liking it depends on whether you like this type of game.

I hope people enjoy it, but I'm through with it after 3 hours in.
Too much just walking around, too much reading letters, too much listening to voices etc. It's a very simplistic point and click adventure without tension. A little bit of running away, hiding and stealth is not good enough for me. It's at best a mediocre game.

I'm moving over to Hellblade now.
Have fun guys.

No it isn't. Do you consider DMC1 or the old school God Of War games tank controls? They are fixed camera as well.
I've played all the games you mention and the first thing The Medium reminded me of was Resident Evil. Yes, if old RE games are tank controls, so is this. I am not using fixed camera as a basis for tank controls btw.

Dino Crisis 2 had the same controls as RE with the added benefit of moving & aiming. Basically, it was an improvement of what we now like to call 'tank' controls. In Medium, you have to be careful of the direction after a camera switches (same thing as RE) and later RE games allowed a little more freedom in movement but people still describe those games as having tank controls. This isn't really different just because there is a little more freedom in movement.

If moving and aiming is the only criteria, then we can even describe RE4 as having tank controls, lol.

Don't get me wrong here. I am not criticizing. I like the old RE type games and this is basically a modern version of that.

It does have tank controls. You should go back and play all the Resident Evil games (all the way to RE: CV) and then switch to DC. The argument you guys are making is artificial. I can give examples upon examples but I don't think its gonna help here. lol.

The camera's are not fixed like the same position and dont move, they move with you most of the time.
If you have played like Heavy Rain, or Detroit, its in that style.

Its not really tank controls like the early Resi Evils. Its more like the controls in the Resi Evil 1 remake.

RE4 is considered to have Tank Controls. Just an over the shoulder view that made them a smidge more tolerable. But having to spin and then walk forward rather than the character just going in whatever direction you push the analog is the main thing people mean by the term tank controls. The not being able to move and aim was another limitation of tank controls, rather than a defining characteristic IMO.

This isn't tank controls as I'd have dropped it in seconds if it was as I loathe tank controls. I didn't like the old RE games much for them and have zero desire to play anything with them today, vs. putting up with them back then as RE was such a new experience. I'm not a fan of fixed camera's either, but it's at least tolerable when not combined with tank controls and in a slow paced game like this where I'm not struggling to aim at enemies etc.

With tank controls you have to push up to go forward, this game doesn't work like this.

This. As that's where they re-made it so the character just goes in the direction you push the stick instead of having to stop and spin around and then press up (and only up) to go forward. But yeah, the controls in this are very much like Remake for sure. Tank controls only refers to that archaic control system from early RE and old games, not any game with a fixed camera.

Yeah, but still tank controls lol. I am not saying they limited themselves to the template of old RE games strictly. That would be silly.

Ok I've played a bit of the game today and I'm really enjoying it. it's a great addition to game pass and nice to see xbox with a good exclusive, it might be only a AA game.
there are a few bugs, but can see these being sorted in the short term. Grats to Bloober and MS for this exclusive. If MS can keep things going now, i see xbox having a bright future.

Then you might as well call every third person game a tank control, the only difference is fixed or not fixed camera

When was the last time you played the old Resident Evil games? I don't remember having to spin/then walk, what do you mean exactly....or perhaps this is what I am not getting, the reason we're basically talking over each other?

I think you really should go back to the old RE games as a refresher.

It controls more like, well exactly like, the David Cage games like Detroit and Beyond Two Souls.
I haven't played those but I'd say or agree with calling those tank controls too.

Lol I am not sure what 'tank' controls are anymore.

For me, this is very much the same as the old school RE games with (obviously) some improvements. If they existed now, this is likely how they would be.

The reason why tank controls are called tank controls is because tanks have to stop moving forward to turn, so tanks stop, turn left ot right on the spot, then go forward.
Thats what the early Resi Evil games do. This game, and the David Cage games are not like that. With these the character goes in whatever direction you push the stick, no stopping and turning or any of that.

Ok, hm, then maybe I have to go back and replay the games or find a side by side comparison. I don't remember ever struggling with that. I guess, time to put in some of my old games! If that really is the case, I would still say the game is closer to the Resident Evil games in control, specially if the 'having to stop to turn etc' is the only distinction.

It's sounds more like you've only played the remakes, rather than the pure early RE games with actual tank controls.

Think of RE1 back in the day on PS1 with a d-pad and not an analog stick. Tank controls meant you pressed left or right on the d pad to turn your character in place. Pressing up moves you forward in which ever direction you're facing and is the only way to move. That's tank controls. Spin, then move forward and only in a straight line with no veering. Stop and spin another direction and then press up again to go that way is the only way to turn and move in a different direction.

This is a far cry from that as you just press the analog stick in the direction you want to move and your character instantly moves that way just like in any 3D game. It's ust a bit awkward sometimes due to the fixed camera and especially if it changes on you while moving. But it's a damn sigh better than having to stop and spin and only be able to move forward in a straight line from whatever direction you are facing and having to stop and spin to move forward in another direction.

In any case, no point in going back and forth on it. You're welcome to keep using the term incorrectly. ;)

I can't believe we are debating what tank controls are.

This game does not have tank controls.

Tank controls are when you can't change direction once you start moving forward or backward. Imagine having to use an old d-pad. You would move your character forward. stop, use left or right to change rotate and change direction, move forward again, repeat. The original RE had tank controls.

There are many examples, many mentioned already, of fixed camera third person games that feature free movement, like The Medium.

quite a shock that you dont like an xbox exclusive

If it gets a PS5 port I guarantee he will say "Well, this game really grew on me."

The game reminds me more of old school point and click adventures than Resident Evil.

Yeah, spot on. Reminds me of two of my favorite games as a kid, early 90s, The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour, old school point and click horror/mystery games, just from a third person perspective here. I like it.

I started with the PS1. Stuart clarified that a little bit but if that is the only distinction, I would still say I was correct in saying it controls similar to the RE games, but obviously with some improvements. So, basically, Dino Crisis 2 didn't use tank controls is what I learned today. :D

Most likely. Never played that series.

Tank controls mostly died off pretty soon after the Analog stick was standard thankfully. Some exceptions like the over the shoulder version of tank controls in RE4 as the series was just known for them at that point. I think the Remake of 1 may have been the first to put in go in the direction you push the stick controls in. Though you still couldn't move and aim at the same time. I've got zero interest in an RE4 remake unless it gets the modern controls of the RE2 and 3 remakes personally. Fighting with awkward and/or limited controls is something I have zero patience for these days, especially in an action-oriented game with lots of shotting like RE4. It was more tolerable in the pure survival horror games with less shooting.

Fot anyone interested, CohhCarnage loved the game. He just played it on stream (none sponsored) for 6 hours straight. He was actually a bit shocked how good it was, after how all over the place the reviews were.
Also i watched the stream and man the game gets crazy later on lol.

I kinda wanna try detroit, is it too easy to kill characters becuase you miss a qte?! or characters die mostly for bad choices?

There's a difficulty option and you can set it so it's mostly (or maybe solely) only the latter.

do you think the game get distorted (for lack of better words) too much by changing that option?

I'm willing to play with death on qte if this mean a more cohesive experience...

I plat'd Detroit last week, and I didn't even finish Heavy Rain once (and barely made it a couple hours into Beyond: Two Souls)

My first playthrough was on Hard and it was pretty difficult to get one of the main characters killed. I made it through the end with all alive (one of the big trophies).

Going back and cleaning up trophies, I guess I could see getting one of them killed accidentally but I don't think it would happen to most people.

Nah. I don’t think it changes anything. I think it just makes the QTEs easy and very hard to fail. Just avoids unwanted bad outcomes that most probably want to avoid unless they’re won that will play a bunch of times to sell all options/outcomes.

I generally only play games once and I can live with outcomes I don’t like that come from one of my choices, but want to avoid crap happening just from failing some QTE as my coordination/response time isn’t what it used to be.

I mean, in theory i play as it come, my objective is not necessarily to save everyone...in this type of games gut choices are a must, if i think that a protagonist is wrong i have no problem in letting him die if you get what i mean.

Thanks guys.
