Yes, Switch is much bigger (per capita) in Japan. Their society has pretty much moved to exclusively mobile and handheld games.

PS5 is still the fastest selling console worldwide, even if Sony isn't focusing much on Japan. It IS still sold out everywhere in Japan (just like everywhere else in the world).
PS5 is trailing behind PS4 launch aligned in US, UK, France, and pretty around the world except Japan since PS4 was released later then everbody else.

NO!
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the highest rated games ever and selling 20M copies at full price
Astro Playroom is just a free game

What does the price of a game have to do with anything? Super Mario World was also a free game. It's also one of the best games ever made.

As someone who spends my gaming time almost perfectly split between PlayStation and Switch, I can tell you they are both great. Quit being blinded by your fanboy loyalty.

Metrics are used to measure the greatness.

In this case Super Mario Odyssey is far above Astro room, both in rating and sales.

Stop spreading fake news and Nintendo is also sold out worldwide.

It's not about being afraid of anything cute or colorful. It's just that once you get older, you grow out of those things that's all. There is art design and then there is that kind of rubbish(like your avatar) where everything is over exaggerated, super colorful, big eyes etc. But hey, that's what sells Big in Japan - colourful, oversaturated, cute, schoolgirls, if that's your thing, fine by me.
Pretty much. I played spyro, crash and ratchet as a kid. I'll get the new ratchet for nostalgia reasons plus it feels more aimed at teenagers to adults rather then kids.

A lot of adults still like the proper kiddy games like pokemon, Mario etc and a person like that I'd call a man child. I personally still like most of the games I played as a teenager so I'd be a manager lol. Each to their own but I selfishly would hate if Sony switched to kiddy cartoon games in an attempt to conquer Japan. Keep the mature experiences coming with the odd trinkle of younger targeted stuff.

Only 4 weeks into the Quarter and we already notice that Momotaro should overtake Sword / Shield's result for Q1 in 1-2 Weeks. Momotaro is heading towards around 700-800K sales this quarter which would be a huge achievement in Q1 for a game released last year. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe might actually surpass last year's Q1 Result next week. Ring Fit Adventure is also around 2-3 weeks away from overtaking it's result.
New Horizon is probably going to finish pretty close to 500K this Quarter and will the forth evergreen driving sales this quarter.

New Titles Q1 2020:
  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 2.608.417
  2. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX - 218.394
  3. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix (Sega) - 78.558
  4. Persona 5 Scramble (Atlus) - 65.653
  5. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 (Bandai Namco) - 61.571
Outside of New Horizon Q1 2020 line-up was pretty weak, this year we've got Disgaea 6, BOND, Bowser's Fury, Olive Town, Bravely Default 2, Densha GO! & most importantly Monster Hunter Rise. This Quarter's Software sales will be up exponentially compared to last year simply because there are far more games that could clear 50K sales launching backed by Momotaro, Ring Fit, New Horizon and MK8D. While Monster Hunter Rise, I anticipate will open with around 2 million sales.

Prediction for Q1 TOP 10
  1. Monster Hunter Rise >2 mil
  2. Momotaro >700K
  3. Bowser's Fury >600K
  4. Ring Fit, Olive Town, New Horizon >500K
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Bravely Default 2 >300K
  6. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate >200K
  7. Pokemon Sword / Shield >175K
Prediction TOTAL TOP 10 >5.7 mil
Q1 2020 TOTAL TOP 10 >4.5 mil

What will be interesting to see is when Sony get more PS5s onto shelves, will we see an immediate reduction in Switch sales?

PS5 will not impact Switch in the slightest way - unless it starts to gets 2-3 exclusive AA & AAA Japanese games per month for at least a couple of months, which doesn't seem too realistic.

Imagine being a manly man and caring for what other people play or like.

Gaming is made for all ages, for everyone to enjoy. Whether you like colorful, dark and grim games, it's a fucking hobby. If you let the kind of games you play define how manly you or others are, holy fuck. After a long day of work, of listening to people, of letting my brain being bombarded with a lot of shit, coming back home, grabbing my switch and hopping into some Fire Emblem or some Mario, it's heavenly - it lets my brain shut off for a moment, let it relax. Then I'm back on being a manly man and drink some neat whiskey, stroke my beard and chop some fucking wood. (and busy as I am, the Switch is heavenly. I have no time nor space for sitting hours on end with a traditional console.)

With that said, FUCKING NINTENDO BOOOOOOOOOOM

This is what people do not get - games are supposed to be relaxing, a form of escapism. Also, they are called GAMES, not 'INTERACTIVE MOVIES'. The praise given to people like Kojima infuriates me, since it is obvious he really wants to be a a filmmaker, but his movies would ran for 50hrs. So instead he puts all the rubbish philosophy and plot into a videogame.

Meanwhile people sit in bed with comfy pillows and play fucking Italian plumber because it's FUN.

Exactly. I once only focused on more dark gritty games and tbh also criticized these "kiddy games". But at the time I was like 18, and now 10 years later I kinda understand the appeal of these more relaxing games. My first console was a gameboy pocket with pokemon red and zelda. After went to Xbox and Playstation, and now I'm back to Nintendo.

I've been playing Astral Chain with little time I have and have been having a blast. It feels so damn relaxing.

Just sold XSX (after two months I realized it's all the same with better coat of paint + I have 2 kids) and ordered a Switch. Can't wait to jump back in!

Wait until the Breath of the Wild sequel releases. It's going to jump again.

The Switch is really Nintendo finding it's true place in the market. Their games have always catered well to portable gaming with players able to easily accomplish something even if they only have a few minutes to spare. 15 minutes will get you some moons in Mario Odyssey, a few matches on Smash, find a Korok or stumble across something in Zelda, do a championship in Mario Kart, etc.

I hope they stick to this formula going forward (but also fix the joycons).
If BOTW2 and the Pokémon remakes both come out at the end of the year then Switch's 5th holiday could be it's strongest one.
PS5 will not impact Switch in the slightest way - unless it starts to gets 2-3 exclusive AA & AAA Japanese games per month for at least a couple of months, which doesn't seem too realistic.
Even then I don't think Switch will impacted. The console is selling on what it does have, not what PS5 doesn't have.

More releases (and supply) would definitely increase PS5 sales but I don't think they'd negatively impact Switch

Not a single PS5 game in top 30. i'm starting to believe the rumors that most of the PS5 consoles in Japan are being bought by scalpers to sell them at a high price in China.

Some of you guys are so cute, talking about “mature” games. Like pretending to be a samurai on your tv, teleporting around a map killing thousands of fake people is “mature”. They’re called games for a reason, chill out.
There's practically no difference between Ghosts of Tsushima and Animal Crossing really. At their core they're basically the same.

No, they’re not but one not being mature doesn’t make the other mature. You’re still sitting on your couch playing a fantasy video game. There is nothing remotely mature about that. Not that there’s anything wrong with doing it. But it’s not in any way a mature thing to do and it’s silly to say it is.

So I just was sent this tweet from a friend. It’s of Yodobashi camera in akihabara having a sale of ps5 systems canceled (they had 300) cause of the craziness that went in.

Btw some good news. Amazon japan finally got in a large number of shipments of ps5 systems this week and many of the back orders got fulfilled, including mine. So there are quite a few happy new ps5 gamers here in Japan.

Artificially fake demand by resellers that are flooding the market thanks to Sony pathetic level of shipments size.

When you shipped your console around wonderswan level it bacame a gold mine for resellers.

exactly. Sony really screwed up with the shipment numbers here. And like I’ve said for weeks people are frustrated. Thankfully my wait, 73 days from order to arrival, is over. But most of my friends here want one and they have had no luck getting one at all and see very little hope for the next few months. Still it’s good to see shipment numbers seem to be rising a little as many predicted.

I'd prefer Sony to wait for a couple of weeks to build up the hardware stocks before releasing on the market instead of sending consistent but small shipments size for every week that only benefit scalpers and resellers.

Not even one PS5 game managed to sell over 1.8K physically last week despite hardware were sold around 17K. Most of the PS5 hardware systems were sold to scalpers and resellers.

I bet most of the system bought by the resellers were sold to SEA and China markets.

So what did the 17.000 new PS5 owners buy? i don't see any PS5 games in the top 10.
Mathematics seems to be quite challenging for you.

300K PS5s on the market - 17k sold this week.

17,000k Switches on the market - 100k sold this week.

If every person who bought a switch bought just one game with it, it would require every new PS5 owner to buy 5 games each to sell more.

More consoles on the market = more software sales.

Why are people getting all salty here because they love games for kids? I love games made for teenagers and fuck do I care. There's nothing wrong with admitting your fav games are not kids games. You can reinvent what mature means and the connotations surrounding it.

As I said earlier I grew out of kids games when I became a teenager but I never grew out of teenager games.

It is very interesting that people attempt to portray Sony audiences as the more mature audience.

There is a reason why Sony has been forcing oppressive censorship policies on sensitive 3rd party contents while Nintendo has a more relaxed censorship policy, hence Playstation versions tend to be censored when Nintendo versions are not.

There is also a reason why Monster Hunter World lacked pronounced blood effects, yet blood returns in Monster Hunter Rise, which is console exclusive to Nintendo Switch.

Shin Megami Tensei contains deeper and more morbid themes than its sister series Persona, and SMT has been exclusive to Nintendo while Persona has been exclusive to Sony.

I wonder what they are playing on them? Demon's Souls has flopped and MM isn't exactly a Japan-centric title.

From my interactions with people that have been trying to buy the system online or waiting with me for our amazon systems to show up, many did mention demons souls and spiderman as games they wanted to play (especially demons souls). And a large number of them did indeed pick it up when they got their systems. So while the sales were not good I expect there are still many who want to play those games when they get the system. Right now though there isn’t one main game though that everyone wants to play. Some want to play souls, others call of duty, some just want to play old PS4 titles in better quality. And others are just buying now for the big games to come in the months ahead.
