I purchased the digital edition of the PS5 because it's the only one I could get my hands on. I am comfortable in life so don't really need to worry about trading in games etc to save coin and like the convenience of a digital game collection and not having to swap out discs.

BUT

Sony is taking the absolute piss out of game prices on the store. $125 Aussie dollars (97 us) is an absolute joke. Is this the new normal.for this gen? Is this the same across all PS stores? How does this compare across regions and with XBOX??

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
At least in my experience with the PS4 games where always more expensive on the digital store. 70€ for what you could get on a physical store for 60€.

Considering games seem to cost 80€ I would say thay you aussie lads are paying just the same ammount of money than euro bros.

Unfortunately you have bought into a locked market now, digital has always been an expensive option as they always release games for the absolute maximum rrp on there. So you're pretty much screwed so you either wait and hope the games you want drop price in a sale or just not buying them as there's no other option. I'd never buy a digital only machine it hands over way too much control to the company in ownership.

re. Xbox, you can get all ms first party games day one for $10.95/month AU (gamepass), so r&c would buy you 12 months of gamepass, and then you have got lots of 3rd parties bundled with this price (the ascent, scorn, stalker 2, the medium etc.)

There should be only one thought in your head OP:

Yeah its ridiculous. 90 Canadian dollars after tax.

Im legit only buying the very cream of the crop AAA games this gen. They can fuck off with these prices.
I made a recent thread about this and other types of bs in this industry and yet it isnt priority #1 to address for everyone. It only gets worse if we dont check them on it people and address the issues.

Sony are going to fuck up a lot of games with their awful pricing over the next few months.

Do they really think Nioh Remastered and Returnal are going to sell at £70?

I was really shocked Returnal was going to be that price. Assumed that would be the usual Housemarque budget title.

Maybe they really upped their game, but I’d be surprised. I really want Ratchet, and would like to play Sackboy (despite not loving the character the game looks like it would be fun) but I’m priced out at the moment. Can afford, won’t pay.

Probably a dumb question, but can you create an American account and pay American prices?

I know you can create a Japanese Switch account and buy stuff off the eShop, but I'm not sure how pricing works when doing that.

$90 Canadian. So it breaks $100 after tax.

N64 64 meg cartridges were $90.

At least back then rom chips cost a lot and you had middlemen retailers. Add battery back up and that's another $10.

Now 70% of gaming is digital and first party revenue from this is direct to them 100%. And a 50 gb game download is probably 3 cents of server costs. And the online store owner gets 30% cuts from everyone else, where they basically act like EB Games but it's digital transactions and not disc copies.

I don't think EB Games or Best Buy even make 30% cuts off disc sales.

Same position as you op, my plan is to buy a digital edition as i can't be arsed with discs but yeah the store prices for new games are crazy high and whilst I can afford em I'm not about to drop £70 on a fucking video game, I simply wait a few months and grab it on sale

It's against TOS...but yes. It's kind of a pain in the arse though. Atleast back in the PS3 days they'd refuse any payment outside the US which meant that you had to purchase US PSN gift cards.

You can do this pretty easily on Amazon, though. They email you the code right away, it adds a slight complication but it's easily worth it to save potentially over a hundred dollars a year.

No physical packaging. No shipping costs. No manufacturing costs. No retail commissions.

Digital should be cheaper, not at a premium. So ridiculous.
Yeah, also there's no way of selling your digital copy after a week or so if you don't like it. If I do that with a new PS5 game on disc it's petty much fully refunded.

The digital prices really don't make sense. The business model certainly doesn't have any appeal to me at least.

For all the flak EB and brick retailers got for selling games at $60 or $70, shitty used game prices and shitty trade in prices, it goes to show it really wasn't EB at all being public enemy #1.

It's actually lazy gamers and their fat asses which are the real enemy.

Console makers have gone the Steam route in full force with still full priced games, 30% third party cuts (which I think is even bigger than what brick stores make), can't sell used games, can't lend games etc....

Turns out most console gamers would rather go the digital route with less options and worse prices/zero trade in policies because they'd rather save 12 seconds putting a disc in the system.

I would never sell my used games to one of those stores (or buy them there..) when online auctions exist, but yeah you sure have a point.

Well people can do what they want I guess, as long as I can still buy/sell my games on disc 🙂

And if I didn't have that option I'd just quit gaming and stick to old games I guess.

This is one of the many reasons why I do not give a fuck about the PS5 at this point, despite having bought every other Sony system at launch.

Every time I see that Demon's Souls is $130AUD for the BASE version, I just nope the fuck out.

Every man has his breaking point, and open, naked, unapologetic price gouging by an increasingly arrogant corporation is mine. Fuck Sony, fuck their game prices, and fuck their shitty system.

I used to buy new games because of the hype, play it for 5 hours, then go back to what I was currently playing.
I eventually get back to playing the new game after a while. This would be an ongoing cycle.

With the new "next-gen" pricing I've adopted to finishing all my backlogs and buying new games that are 50% discounted.
It's been working so far. So thanks Sony and Game Companies for teaching me how to ignore hype.

This is bad for the companies seeing disappointing sales figure and maybe not continuing with great IPs. But money talks, and I am talking with my money back at them.

Nope, always wait for a sale unless it's monster hunter or something else that I'm playing for 500 hours making it worth it. GT7 probably too.

Yeah, Australia is basically getting screwed. When Sony announced their game price hike, I noped out, and the Digital PS5 became an instant avoid for me. Absolutely terrible value proposition. PSN is always the most expensive way to buy PS4 games, so there was no way I was locking myself in to that to save a few bucks up front on the hardware.

Stop buying digital games on consoles until they give us a reason to like on PC. It's insane that a digital product costs the same as a physical one.
