One thing the big three did/doing right and one thing they did/doing wrong

If you had to pick one thing Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo did right (or currently doing right) and one thing they did wrong (or doing wrong) what would it be? From my point of view (my "opinion" everyone)

Sony
Right - Exclusives. Its what Sony does best (apart from making great consoles). You cant deny that Sony's exclusives have had a massive impact on the gaming scene. Its meant that MS have really had to up their game. Sony have set standards so high from technical and theatrical (story included) point of view. Its only good for the gamers and should be embraced!

Wrong - When you consider the "We beleive in Next Gen" gate I was actually going to mention Sony's marketing/PR but didn't want to repeat myself (see Micrsoft). So i'll focus on PS Now. I really like PS Now for PC, i think its time Sony spent more time improving it (such as higher res) and marketing it better. It find a little strange that Sony aren't trying to sell it more? It could compete with GamePass. I'm not suggesting a future of streaming only... i'm just saying i like the option.

Microsoft
Right - Investment, GamePass is great but in order for it to continue to be great it needs AA/AAA games. Microsoft Game Studio's growing number of developers is an encouraging sign that this will become reality. Granted we have a year or two before we see the fruits of their money labour but at least they have something in the pipeline as opposed to the lacklustre of exclusives last gen.

Wrong - MS's marketing/PR suck's. The whole Live Gold and Halo Infinite debacle only highlights that truth. Its almost embarrassing at times. We just want the truth and our hopes in check. No need to over state the fact and sugar coat. Gamers are not (generally) stupid. Surely MS's PR cant be stupid enough not to predict the Live Gold Backlash?! Beggars belieft.

Nintendo
Right - Innovative, whether you consider historical consoles a success or failure you have to admire Nintendo's approach at bringing innovation into consoles. The concept of the Switch being a home console and portable is brilliant. Sure we would like higher res better performance, thats why we Xbox and PS, Nintendo does not need to follow the same trend and they havent. And thats just brilliant.

Wrong - Nintendo's pricing on old(er) games. Damn they are expensive. Zelda still is £59.99! That game was released 4 years ago?

They corrected a lot of the Don Mattrick-era mistakes, Game Pass is an amazing deal, and they (seemingly) have lots of new games in the works. They messed up making the Xbox One X because the Series X/S were then a small upgrade.

Nintendo
They have a system people want and they're making good games for it. But they're fuckin Nintendo. Their online experience is a nightmare, Animal Crossing requiring multiple systems for multiple islands is stupid, cancelling two Netflix series because someone on the internet found out about one of them, making Mario All Stars 3D only available for a few months. Not fixing their stupid joycons. RRRRRRRGGGG!!!!!

Sony
Making incredible single player games. But they don't seem that well-suited for the future and where things are headed with services. As evidence, they signed with Microsoft to use their backend for hosting their online services, and didn't tell any of their own developers beforehand.

Sony's future is bright. When the likes of Naughty Dog and Polyphony start releasing theirs games it's gonna shine!

Best thing they ever did - Hiring Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka
Worst thing they ever did - Underestimating Sony

Sega
Best thing they ever did - Granting Sega US autonomy
Worst thing they ever did - Letting an internal battle of ego destroy their company

Sony
Best thing they ever did - PSone, PSone, PSone
Worst thing they ever did - PS3 (I love it, but man those losses)

Microsoft
Best thing they ever did - Making serious efforts to chase Japan with quality partnerships and exclusives for 360
Worst thing they ever did - Attempting to beat PS3 to market by rushing out a great but severely mechanically flawed console and shooting themselves in the foot to the tune of billions in replacements

The best thing they are doing is making great cinematic action games.

The worst thing is they suck at making online competitive games. Sony seems to be about the hype of exclusives but they don't have their own fighting game, or first person shooter, or just straight up amazing multiplayer game. They tried with this recent car and running game to imitate fortnite style and rocket league but didn't really do much. Their racing games release one every like 5 years it seems like.(pr is terrible but it's the games that matter most)

Microsoft
The best thing is they have bought tons of studios to help increase the frequency and variety of games.

The worst thing is they are still struggling to release games even with the old studios they have.

Nintendo
The best thing is they have great first party games.

The worst thing is the majority of the AAA first party games are sequels. I want some more new stuff. Its always why I wanted them to buy new studios cause I don't see Nintendo veering away from the games they usually make so why not buy a studio to make those games for you. ( The sequels make tons of money so I understand why they do it)

Sony

Right - Exclusives are great. Well worth the money most of the time.
Wrong - PS Now and backwards compatibility. The service is lacking, streaming PS3 games isn't great and the PS4 offerings are okay but could be better.

Microsoft

Right - Game Pass and their approach to making sure all games can be played under one system. Great service, and I like their stance on backwards titles.
Wrong - Lack of real big compelling titles. Plenty of niche smaller titles, but nothing that screams out at you. I would say Forza is the biggest one right now, hopefully Infinite is good.

Nintendo

Right - Knows their audience well, and has a lot of big titles to draw people in. Animal Crossing, Zelda and Mario all look fantastic. I'd love to play them one day.
Wrong - Their pricing of the regular Switch model and Online not being really worth it because it isn't up to a good standard from what I've seen and heard.

Best: Securing great third party support for their home consoles. Apart from Sony's own exclusives you always know that there's going to be lots of great third party content on PlayStation. Always.
Worst: Cocky Sony brought about some really anti-consumer attitudes to the industry.

Microsoft
Best: I thought about the harddrive in the original Xbox, Xbox Live or Game Pass. I have to go with "services" overall: online play, the back compat program, quick resume, smart delivery and Game Pass. Watch and learn, everyone.
Worst: When Microsoft tried to catch the Wii audience and they almost lost the core gamer in favor of Kinect-athon. The dark age.

Nintendo
Best: Controller innovation. They're not afraid of re-inventing the wheel over and over again, which is kind of admirable.
Worst: Nintendo are most anti-consumer of the three. They want you to buy the same game over and over again, and won't make their old games accessible in an easy and affordable way either.

OP said "big three" but didn't include Google

The only thing Sony did wrong was hang onto their weird Japanese games/developers for too long.

It became pretty obvious western development was leading the industry back in the late 00s.

Sony seems to have fixed that now with Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst leading the way.

Sony:
Right - the PS4/5 and psp. The psp quickly became my favorite non-Nintendo handheld and thebps4 was the successor that the Xbox 369 should have been.

And an honorable mention to the PS2. While it’s exclusives may not have hit as hard for me as the gamecube or even Xbox, it’s library was fucking huge and there was something for everyone and that’s what made it so special.

wrong: the ps3 and vita. The vita because they let it out just to die and the ps3 was the culmination of things I hated about playstation at the time (shit controller, shit internet quality, and lesser ports of third party games despite the initial higher price and some games just straight up didn’t work without crashing all the time like skyrim)

Microsoft:

right - they started strong with games like halo, fable, forza, mech assault and had a stellar third party support going into the 360 days (atleast the first half of the gen) plus the Xbox controller (in general) is still to this day my go-to. And credit where it’s due: gamepass is a good deal for a service for games.

wrong - after the internal shake up shortly after the Kinect launched, we got the Xbox one tvtvtvtvkinecttv bullshit that should’ve never been the angle for a new console thus plunging the Xbox brand into a spiral of inferior ports, paying more for a useless peripheral (at launch) And a line-up of mediocre sequels to what were once great franchises. And eventually a lack of heavy-duty first party support in general.

And frankly, the series x hasn’t swayed me that ms has changed for the better. In fact their little xbl stunt has further infuriated me of the brand even though they did 180 from that shit almost instantly.

nintendo:

right - their handhelds are the best. From the Gameboy to the switch. Nintendo has always made handheld consoles with libraries that equal that of full blown consoles. I’ve dumped more hours into Pokémon growing up than any other series and it’s not even close (and that’s just one franchise, in the gba days I’ve sunk so many hours into games like advance wars, fire emblem, sonic games, zelda Minish cap & ALttP, etc.) Plus their general line up may be predictable (but unlike with MS) they atleast know how to reinvent their sequels without making them feel like a hash. (Most of the time)

wrong - they often misread their audience. Nintendo is by far the least consistent of the big three in terms of quality. Most of the time they’re very good, but sometimes I have to question their motives, and just for prices but the awkward time frames of announcements and how random they are in general. Like why did it take them so long to port SM3DW to the switch? Of all games they ported nsmbwu YEARS before 3d world.

the Wii U is also a monument to their miscalculations and failures.

(bonus) PC:

right - no true transition between generations meant most games would continue to work regardless of the age of your machine. There’s also lot of versatility if you’re willing to work with the tools and settings (why argue regarding image quality vs performance when you can have both?) plus there’s just a sense of uniqueness with games that allow mod support so you can play to your own style with custom content.

wrong - the biggest caveat to PC gaming is price. I’ve sunk over $1k into my rig and I’ll likely have to sink another $300 to fix it again. Which comes to my second big gripe with pc gaming, they’re expensive but sometimes they can easily be broken unintentionally and you’re left with a $1k+ paperweight.

Ms.

Right: gamepass is going to evolve into the Netflix of games. You may not see this right now but eventually it will become available on all platforms.

Wrong: failure to invest in new IP/exclusives which should have happened 5 years ago. No exclusives for the XsX render it obsolete if you can obtain their games on PC. It means not only will we ever see the true power of the machine, every game also has to scale down to the Xss. Every machine needs a stable of exclusive IP associated with it. Since the 360 MS have positively failed at this.

Nintendo

Right: their stable is strong, they're constantly reinforcing their brand by releasing titles from genres which the other 2 are weak at, thereby enhancing the proposition that Nintendo do nintendo best.

Wrong: the Switch needs more power. Multiplats are not an option on Switch. If they were they would become a far more interesting choice as second console.

Sony.

Right:the single config design and focus on asset streaming synergy. Sony now their exclusives are their main strength so designing a machine to leverage these open worlds is going to pay off big time when 1st party come to town. Not having to contend with a second weaker machine means games can be optimised to the hilt. We saw last gen was ND or Guerilla could do with 1.84 flops..now they have 5 times that power.

One other thing I'd add is the Bluepoint method/experiment of remaking DeS is something Sony will tap into. The idea of simply porting an old engine and just focusing on updating textures means a whole host of Sony IPs can come back to life...

Wrong: crossgen support. Completely understable from a business standpoint but it means we dont get to see what the Ps5 does for some time..i guess June with Ratchet will be some clue but until the pure Ps5 exclusives appear we won't see what a monster the Ps5 is going to be.
