Naughty Dog's final PS5 exclusive will probably be the first game to showcase photorealistic graphics in-game (or come very close to it)

For one, we're still early in the PS5's lifecycle and so I think we have yet to truly see what the PS5 is capable of in terms of graphics. But Naughty Dog have consistently shown that they have a knack for showcasing the best realistic graphics from a first-party developer ever since The Last of Us released years ago on the PS3, and how much better that game looked compared to Uncharted 3. Whether you like or dislike their gameplay is not really the point, although perhaps it's because their games are designed a certain way, particularly the linearity of the levels, camera cuts and maybe just the talent from within Naughty Dog, their artists and programmers whose names we don't really know but are clearly able to push the visuals envelope. Or am I thinking of the ICE Team? In any case, there's clearly talent and money within the studio, when talking about realistic game graphics and animations.

I expect something like real-time raytracing will be a big breakthrough for developers like Naughty Dog chasing photorealistic graphics. I'm no tech expert but there's something fascinating about exclusive games, seeing how good a game looks when it's developed for one platform. Like how much of the attention to detail that we see in one game do we not see in other multiplatform games released the same console generation? How much of the attention to detail that we see in Naughty Dog games do we not see in games by Electronic Arts, Square Enix etc?

Do you think by the end of the PS5's lifecycle that Naughty Dog will showcase photorealistic graphics in-game (or come close to it)? If not, what do you think is missing?

I'm honestly still really excited to see what their PS5 update for TLOU2 brings. I never finished my NG+ run of it, maybe when it gets upgraded I will go back and get the plat.

As far as true photorealism, I dunno. If there is one dev I would bet on, Naughty Dog would be up there. Though I am not sure true photorealistic graphics are really something we are gonna see anytime soon, honestly. With some exceptions, of course. I'm talking more in terms of big action packed games.

And will be 2 gens old gameplay wise
This is a good example of a hit and run comment. I would not say ND games are behind when it comes to gameplay. The direction the story and characters are taking ends up influencing gameplay decisions, specially nowadays at ND. That is not necessarily a bad thing because they do a pretty good job of blending it all together.

Or should naughty dog also follow suit in doing what almost every other developer is by releasing a F2P game? Some of you act like you are bound or required to like their games. You are not. If you don't like them, that's perfectly fine but stop making drive-by comments that serve no real purpose other than to...well I don't think I need to go into that. Point being, their games aren't what you are trying to make them to be with your 'drive-by' comment.

What new project are they working on, any leaks? My last gm was Uncharted spin-off with that baddie Chloe.
There's the long rumoured space adventure.

What's likely going to be immediately next is a 4k/60fps remaster of TLoU2 with the multiplayer.

And I think they're done with Uncharted; but UC4 (I think) was the highest selling PlayStation ip last gen so I can see Sony handing it to another of their studios.

It's technically incredible that we could be there that soon....but I'm not exactly excited at the prospect tbh.One thing I love about games is how devs can flex their artistic talents making games that all have their own looks art wise....the odd game here and there looking like real life would be cool I guess but I prefer games to do more interesting things with the way they look.
For me animation immerses me in a game more than the graphics,of course Naughty Dog have that covered too, lol.
Trico from The Last Guardian is still the most impressive thing I saw on my PS4 last gen....not because of how it looked but how it moved.

As long as it is a new ip I'm fine.

Get off their dicks! Oops I mean. Nah. I think Ninja Theory will. They did this on last gen with small budget.

do you think money is the only thing that puts Ninja Theory behinds Sony top dogs like ND, SM, GG?

Lots of games have come to that point imo. If you want to be technical about it, look at Fight Night Round 3 on 360/PS3. Many games have done this in their own way, and looking true to life isn't exactly always the "best looking" thing for a game. A game still having that "graphically rendered" look is still highly preferred, and all of Naughty Dogs game, no matter how good they look, still look like "games" if that makes any sense. Videogames look better than real life because real life looks boring as shit. Visibly graphics rendered content just plain looks cooler than true photo realism as if I stepped outside my house and took a picture lol.

It always has, it always will.

As good as Hellblade II looked, that looks unmistakably like a videogame.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
No, but it will look very good, again, because that's what ND do.

Hey I'm sure they will create some amazing looking games. If they are able to get ray tracing working on PS5 by then without too many sacrifices then I'm sure we will be in for a real treat.

That being said. I still haven't seen a big budget CGI film that has been able get over the uncanny valley. I find it unlikely that we will see a video game console be able to render photorealistic imagery in real time before we see that feat achieved in film. This kind of narrative seems to pop up at the start of every generation. If you're expecting photorealism or even near photorealism, you will be disappointed. But it is very reasonable to expect an exceptionally stunning world class experience from ND whenever they release their final PS5 experience.

I'm sure their faces and digital acting are gonna be top tier and close to a real film.

The entirety of the graphics tho? not so sure, we are still light years from photorealism in every graphic aspect no matter how much noise the "diminishing return" folks can produce.

Their games will be some of the best showcases of what these systems are truly capable of. No doubt about that. It takes more than just a high poly model to really sell a scene... which is why their animations help tremendously in the perceived fidelity - lifelike imitation of reality. It's the whole package that sells it, not just the individual parts. ND executes on all of it.

Haters can't help themselves. The ND threat was invoked by OP.

I just finished my first session of The Last of Us II on PS5. There's nothing photo-realistic about it. Just like there was nothing photo-realistic about Uncharted 4. It's heavily stylized art.

Reminder: Naughty Dogs multiplayer game will probably be really damn good.

Their next single player game most likely won't be.
