Naughty Dog's final PS5 exclusive will probably be the first game to showcase photorealistic graphics in-game (or come very close to it)

If we focus on characters, the big wall is animation so i can easily see ND staying ahead of the pack this gen. You can pretty easily have some very realistic looking character models in UE4 for example, but the moment they move the illusion it's broken, this is not the case with ND games, so if they improve as expected they are gonna do another huge leap ahead.

Graphics are cool and all but ND gameplay does nothing for me. I had my fill by the time Uncharted 3 came out. Tried to get into TLOU but too mellowdramatic and scripted walking sections. Just not into that type of gameplay.

That being said, I'm sure whatever they do on the PS5 will look absolutely gorgeous.

I think more than just ND will hit close enough to "photo realistic" (by today's expectation) by the end of this generation. There were bits of Death Stranding that were already very close. And a whole heap of games that looked "not far" off. Will just be a design decision.

I think we have reached a point where sure they will look good but I am not sure I will be really impressed.

Not that they really have a choice.

If ND went for anything less than the most realistic graphics possible at any given time, the PS audience’s reaction would be the betrayalton of the century.

Dont you think Kait in Gears of War 5 look better than Ellie in TLOU II

This is so not there. They barely touch what you think are Woke subjects. It’s handled just as any other topic with nuance and most of the time it’s barely there. Get over it. They made the best game of last year.

Game is freaking terrible story wise. and a large number of people think so as well, awards mean dog shit to me 🤣

I love Naughty Dog but nothing in this gen will look as Avatar and Avatar looks dated yet, so my answer is No.

Get off their dicks! Oops I mean. Nah. I think Ninja Theory will. They did this on last gen with small budget.

This was a clever use of the technologies available in the market.
What people think when talking about ND is that they develop their own technologies, they have the ability to write and tweak every like of code to make the rendering more realistic.

Not shocked. They did an amazing job with The Last Of Us 2 and Uncharted 4. Great animation, lighting and mo-cap performances help add to that realism. I'm assuming a lot of that will be used at that new Sony Studio in San Diego thats rumored to be working on a Uncharted game.

Who wants photorealism? I got real life for that. If they get close to that original Uncharted 4 demo (during gameplay) then I'll be happy as.

I don't see how anyone should care about photorealism and why would you expect that from Naughty Dog, it's boring and pointless.
That is not to say about certain aspects of environments and characters looking more and more lifelike while keeping it all heavily stylized under top-notch art direction as they always do.

I honestly hope to see future games push fidelity elsewhere, towards lifelike behavior of objects and all kinds of micro and macro scale interactions, not about how pretty it looks but how everything reacts to everything else in moment-to-moment gameplay.

I'd prefer PS3 graphics with 100k physically simulated rigid bodies in every scene than PS4 graphics with sub 1k cap as we've had last-gen.

More physics, more sophisticated animation blending, more permanent destructibility, more emergent events in gameplay.

The sense of scale will be the most impressive thing I believe. This achieved by the unbelievable asset streaming that PS5 provides. You can begin to see this sense of scale with your character being a part of a bigger picture with demons souls but ND will crank it to a ridiculous level with whatever their next game is.

Considering they are working on factions and probably a TLOU2 remaster / patch, couldn't it be late gen before their new game even launches?

I'm assuming they don't make uncharted 5 although they still could.

no way all their eggs are in one basket just for that patch/factions

"How close can we get to Hollywood?" is such a terrible question to be asking for game designers.

Yup there is no doubt that Naughty Dog will be the best this generation as well.

It is the best thing about being a Playstation gamer and I pity all those that don't understand and I envy those that are yet to freshly experience the magic of Naughty Dog games.

No idea how they do it. Like how is TLOU2 possible on a 8 year old hardware that has 1.8TF and still looks better than what others put out on 6TF machines or even high end Desktop PCs.

Whatever comes next I am excitedly looking forward to it and thank god for Neil Druckmann. One of the best people in the industry and we can be thankful to have him even though some might disagree but that is their problem then.

if they do touch last of us again this gen they need to realize that the story in current day is over. There is nowhere to go after the ending of 2. It's a wrap.

We need a game focusing on the events after the prologue in the first game. Joel and Tommy.. The story could take them into the unexplained backstory of bill and even meeting tess, etc. They left this open purposely. It's all I want

You know what else has 'photorealistic graphics'?

A photo.

And a photo has far better gameplay than a Naughty Dog title, so there's that.

Factions and a remaster / patch being done is likely by a very small group within the team, I don't think it will hold back The Last Of Us Part 3 even remotely, consider The Last Of Us 1 remaster wasn't done by the entire Naughty Dog team.

Consider The Uncharted Collection was done by Bluepoint games as we still got Uncharted 4.

So I think you are correct that they won't make Uncharted 5, Sony San Diego will likely make that. Naughty Dog Uncharted team is likely working on that new IP, Naughty Dog Last Of Us team is likely starting (or has already started) pre-production for The Last Of Us 3.

Stuff like MPs, remasters, ports are rarely if ever done by the entire team as a whole.

So lets say we get something like

The Last Of Us 2 MP (part of the Last Of Us team)
Naughty Dog Space game new IP (from the Uncharted team)
The Last Of Us 3 (From the rest of the Last Of Us team)
The Last Of Us 1 remake in The Last Of Us 2 engine (Bluepoint games)
Uncharted 5. (Sony San Diego)

Its within reason that all that could happen, simply not by 1 team.

Final? Looking at their PS4 output were lucky if we even get one game.

lol looking at anyone's output we are lucky if we get any games during any gen. That output slowing down isn't simply a Naughty Dog thing.....

Rockstar only put out Red Dead 2 as a new game.

So I think its a safe bet that we get a new IP from Naughty Dog from the half of the team that did Uncharted 4 and The Last Of Us part 3.

I'm wondering as well how good the game will look. They have continually impressed on the visuals. Not a fan of their games but I do like to look at the trailers and walkplay.

I don't agree with that the story of TLOU is over, but I do like the idea of Joel and Tommy focused TLOU entry a lot.

That would be a cool side game or DLC. A prequel about Joel, Eugene, Tommy, Tess, Marlene would be most hype. It seems the battle between FEDRA, Fireflies, WLF was some epic shit.

What's the obsession with photorealistic graphics being seen as "The Best" graphics????
Doesn't great art direction and a sense of escapism from the real world matter any more?
I'm a dev, working in the sector where photorealism is the aim and I still don't get it.

To me games will always have visual flaws but as the game get more photorealistic the those flaws will stand out much more and going to uncanny valley territory.

I will always prefer stylize visuals and character designs over realistic ones.

I prefer this

You say this all the time but there is actually nothing wrong with liking photorealistic graphics. I like both cartoony, stylized graphics and photorealistic graphics. Also, no one dislikes The Last of Us Part II because its graphics are photorealistic, they dislike it because of its story and playing as Abby. This thread isn't even about The Last of Us Part II, it's about the graphics potential for the PS5.

Sure, with photorealistic graphics it’s easier to escape, at least for me. Easier than with something ”gamey”.
