Hey, GAF! Recommend me and my buddy a co-op game.

My friend and I consistently play co-opgames (PC only) on-line. We have been for years. Every once in awhile, though, we hit a bit of a block on w hat to play next. Would you like to recommend one of your favorite co-op games?

For reference, here are the games we’ve played:

Borderlands 2
Resident Evil 6
Gauntlet
The Remnant
Trine
Trine 2
Torchlight 2 (briefly)
GTA V
Path of Exile
Dying Light
Portal 2
Serious Sam 3
Trials Fusion
Ghost Recon
Dead Island (briefly)
Left 4 Dead 2(this was probably the first one we played together)

The less grindy, the better- even though some of these games have grind to them. I just don’t care for games that have tons of submenus and inventory management mostly because my friend obsesses over it and I’m more of action guy.

Even with that said, all suggestions are welcome.

Patient MembeR
Overcooked and Android Assault Cactus are two of my most-played couch co op games last generation, 100s of hours in each.

Flight sims such as Falcon BMS and DCS World are good for co-op but they are complicated so i don't know if this is for your friend and you.

You can play Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls Remastered with your friend using passwords to summon. Using a longer password makes it work better

Also, Divinity Original Sin 2 is an amazing game you can play co-op but it is turn based combat with reading, you said you prefer action. Excellent turned based combat in Divinity 2 though, maybe it's time to try something new.

Deep Rock Galactic or Vermintide 2. Both are very good pick up and play games with a good challenge curve, lots of content and have similar mechanics to Left4Dead. The only thing is they have a small amount of menu hopping but it only takes one session to familiarize yourself with it.

I had a bunch of ideas but you said less grindy the better, and most of them are grindy ARPG looter types

Deep Rock Galactic is a great game, though.

I used to like Vermintide 2 but kinda lost interest in it.

Nah go ahead and share them. Sometimes grindy can still be fun. Go ahead and share them.

Resident Evil 5 was a lot of fun back in the day to play co-op with a friend

I was thinking about buying it again last year for its co-op + for its Mercenaries which is a great multiplayer addition, but instead went with RE0

Have you played it yet? Looks awesome. This might be the one.

I tried getting him to coop Halo with me. He is just not a fan. Unfortunate really as their campaigns are way more fun with a friend.
Worth a shot. If you're talking offline coop then Rayman Legends is a fucking blast mate. Online perhaps Sea of Thieves, if you can make your own party fun this game really delivers. Diablo III is also quite fun and you really don't need to grind if you're in coop or don't care about the end game levelling/higher difficulties.

Ive heard mixed reviews, but this is exactly the kind of game we’d be into. Is the story any good?
I've been forever waiting a price cut (this game almost looks like it's made from Nintendo... it never drops!) so I wouldn't know.
But, if that can help, you only need to buy 1 copy of the game to play. Your co-op buddy will be able to download it for free afterwards, if I remember correctly.

Also, i give another vote for Resident Evil 5, it's very fun in coop!

Are you from Europe or south America? If yes, you could know the cult spaghetti-western duo Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. There's a very charming co-op breawler called Slaps And Beans, made specifically for couch co-op, which i suggest in case you're a fan. The throwbacks to the movies are like a travel in time.

Edit: sorry, read now you need it to be online. Scrap the last one then.

Play Halo and don't rush through it ,take a breath and play it cause it's worth every time you play the way you want and never gets old .

Other games like resistance, quake, doom .

EDF!
Imaginary back-of-the-box blurbs:
  • Shoot down giant bugs in highly destructible cities with a vast array of ridiculous weapons
  • Practise singing multiple versions of the Battle Hymn of the EDF
  • Shout "EDF!!!" out loud together when your testosterone runneth over
  • Call down airstrikes to make your own Michael Bay setpieces
  • Pilot a mecha to go toe to toe with a kaiju, or many
  • Laugh your ass off at Newton as ragdoll physics propel you across the map
It can get grindy and repetitive depending on what you're going for, but the fun times you'll have with your buddy are worth it.

And if you have the time, here are two highly enjoyable reviews of EDF 2025 (read: EDF 4.0) and EDF 4.1 respectively

Isnt that the couch co-op game that came out earlier last year? I played it with your mom. Lousy gameplay and the game was ruined with pay-to-win micro transactions.

Would not recommend.

Well, at least I don't have to financially support her now

You're doing God's work my guy

Halo Wars 1 has a fun co op campain as well as multiplayer skirmish maps you can do co op . Fun times if you like somewhat simple rts games.

overcooked 2 would be a nice send off to your relationship ;)
me and my fiance somehow didn't break up after getting 3 stars on every level and all DLC

I originally wrote overcooked 1 and 2 but then deleted it cuz I wasn't sure they were on PC with online cooperative play.

But they are both flat out intense and fun true cooperative gameplay.
