Sony is being very sneaky and untransparent with the way they’re handling PC ports

They make no official announcements themselves and it’s always in an interview down in the 9th question. Horizon Zero Dawn was “announced” in the PS Blog in a segment not about Horizon or anything PC related.

Days Gone was “announced” in a magazine interview from a random question out of a segment which again has nothing to do with Days Gone or PC. Moments later the Steam page shows up. Like they strategically planned it timingly after the article went up.

They also are very secretive on what other games are coming. A game shows up out of nowhere and they give bullshit tidbits about the PC market then leave people speculating until the next random game shows up. Unlike say Microsoft who is very clear on their PC support; everything day one everywhere.

It’s like they’re trying fool people to keep buying PS4 and PS5 thinking all those games are still exclusive while they sneakily release their games on PC unannounced.

Here’s to the next PS game on PC being known about while Jim Ryan is being interviewed about his house decorations.

I'd say thats exactly what they are doing. You see it in other industries that are more physical too, you want to promote the platform where you get the most return the most.

How long did it take Microsoft to get to that point though? For years Microsoft treated pc games like absolute garbage, even trotting out stuff like paid online for the platform. I’m glad Microsoft is where they are now in regards to pc, but they certainly started off treating pc games and releases very shitty.

Days Gone runs on UE4, probably an easy port.

But they want playrrs to keep buying it on PS before they announce the port. I also assume they go on a game by game basis, clearly not many games will be on PC.

MS so clear they can't even outright say whether Bethesda IP will come to PS, despite paying $7.5 billion for them.

They pulled the same shit with Miles Morales and HFW and made it seem like they're only gonna be on PS5 and then stealthly announced the PS4 versions in a blog post the day pre-orders opened after the show, what a dick move.

I think we'll get a definitive answer to that question once they get the regulators' approval and the deal officially closes.

They can't say anything because the purchase is not finished yet, it wouldn't look well to suddenly say they are cutting a platform from studios they don't officially own yet.

They literally legally aren’t allowed to until the purchase is finalised so...

I mean, they can’t legally say anything about what they will or won’t do with Bethesda until they actually own them and the process is complete.

Because it is not a big deal in terms of marketing point... it is a very old game that already had it time to shine so their marketing should focus on new big releases.
Man, game it's not even two years old.

But I get your point. This just seems like an easy port and nobody is going to buy a PS5 to play Days Gone, so in the end it's just easy money for them.

Because they don't want to risk losing playstation owners.

The average ps owner will give Sony:
50 per year via ps plus
40 per first party game
20 per 3rd party game
Hardware profit except for early adopters
Microtransactions cut
Accessories

Just calculate for one lost customer, how many pc gamers have to buy one of their games.

They do it carefully so their install base remains intact.

Way too stupid gamble to do when you are at the top imo.

Is this thread trying to be another Playstation doom thread?

Sony isnt gonna release its games on PC right away. Otherwise alot more games would of been ported

AFAIK they have no obligation of giving us any information at all.
The games are theirs and they decide when and where they release and how they announce it.
Bringing old games to PC is probably a very low priority in their overall plans.

Sony first party games aren’t your average affair. Leaving the ecosystem is a pretty big deal. The least they could is have a PR about it.

I don’t think revealing these during interviews is a coincidence

The ignored PC in the beginning yes but even when they treated PC half assed you knew exactly their half assed plans. They were not hiding anything. They just didn’t care as much.

Sony is being obtuse on purpose. Like they still have no clue if they want to fully commit to this.

Have no fear, we have a GAF Verified Insider who's been telling us these plans for ages. We who believe in the power of PC have been waiting with all faith and endurance for the prophecies to be fulfilled. Now to return to my chambers and port-beg Lord Sony for DLSS on Days Gone with deep devotion and true fervency.

They aren't being sneaky. They are being strategic. They aren't ever going to be offering console/PC parity the way Microsoft does. That is not on the cards, and you are a fool to think otherwise.

But, while every tiny crumb they toss out there results in a tsunami of dumbasses on internet forums screaming 'BLOODBORNE PC LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO', the Playstation brand's visibility is raised, people talk about Playstation, and people are reminded that Sony sells a console that is largely built on exclusive content.

They're playing you, and it works every time.

Sony needs to stop pretending the hardware is the selling point, rather than the IP; that's the golden goose. But it's also easy to understand that the majority of revenue is derived from controlling the flow of content via a digital storefront and subscription services.

Microsoft realized that it was better to encourage both PC and console because PC's are Windows-based, anyway. It's a win-win for them, unlike Sony.

Not carefully enough anymore... cause I am seriously thinking of moving permanently to PC.
I hope there are more that are thinking similarly.

Of course it is.

Remember the time when Sony was doomed because they were radio silent on any next gen news and MS was 'open and transparent' about Series X in the months leading up to release?

For months there were these 'Sony is not transparent' threads floating around here and on Era. Now apparently they are not transparent enough on a platform that is not their obvious main focus to release their games on.

Some so called hardcore gamers on these forums can be a bunch of whiney little cunts. It's quite unbelievable really.

Exactly, Sony has no stake in PC's.... they don't even make laptops anymore.
PC is only a competing platform and they are giving away one of their strongest selling points.

You just hit the nail on the head.

Microsoft can offer PC/console parity because Microsoft owns both. If you buy an Xbox game for PC, who gets paid? Microsoft.

Sony is not going to be handing revenue to their competitor, on console OR PC.

Hence, old and/or not-particularly-loved IP will show up on Steam as brand extension. The crown jewels of Sony's line up will remain locked to Playstation hardware forever. Well, at least until emulation happens in 2045.

Seriously who the fuck cares are you not playing the games anyways. This Console loyalist shit has got to fuckin stop. Sony doesn’t give a fuck about how you fanboys think they should handle their business if PC is lucrative in other avenues where it makes sense to them they’re going to go in that direction. Not everyone is going to buy pcs in mass numbers because playstation games are starting to be available on them. Some people don’t want to be bothered with the tinkering it takes to play games on PC.

But seriously, Sony fanboys needn't be concerned. You already need a pretty capable PC to play the PS4 scraps, capable meaning a financial outlay far in excess of a console. By the time PS5 games start appearing on pc, coupled with the ludicrous costs of a very capable gpu, the number of potential ps5 customers Sony will lose to PC gaming will be miniscule in the grand scheme of things. We take it as a given Sony will sell 100m+ units of each piece of hardware they put out. The aren't going to give a shite if 2m or so if them them buy a PC for Horizon 2 instead.

Most of the best PC games come to consoles, so share and share alike, eh? In fact, I’ll be looking forward to playing Disco Elysium on my PS5 very soon. However, I don’t believe that and other examples will push PC gamers into buying a PS5, if you get my drift.

But PC’s cost alot more to buy and maintain.

Don’t get the exclusives... well not day 1. And like 2 PS exclusives have made its way to PC and one didnt run great on the PC (Horizon )?

Most the games I get are Nintendo or Playstation 1st party. Obviously I get games like RDR2, Sekiro etc but alot more of the games are exclusive to PS4/5/Switch

Microsoft also has their own store on PC where they will get a 100% of the revenue.

Sony must sell through Valve, Steam and GoG giving them all a large piece of the pie. Genius.

I think it's the marketing approach that they're just choosing to take, and it's smart IMO. They're taking years old Playstation titles and releasing them to the PC audience. Folks that may have been interested in the games and didn't have a PS4, or folks that had a PS4 and are willing to double dip. I think it's a great idea and approach. Surprising that group of players just feels like a brand new release for them.

Again, I don't understand the rage by any means. They're sharing awesome (once) exclusive experiences to a new large pool of players.

Twitter's algorithm decided to throw tweets at my face about the topic when it was first announced. It was hilarious and sad seeing how upset people were. Everyone using the hashtag "boycottsony", lmao. Christ.

Great post.

They should be afraid. I am not buying ps5 now that i know "exclusive" games are coming to pc. I was intentent on only ps5 only. Now i have a pc.

Its the non existant legacy support and bc and that fact games are coming pc.

And its even worse if it is like some neogaf insider is hinting at. That all games now are made as multiplatform games. And not bespoke. Then there is zero interest in owning a ps5.

Absolutely. It's completely wishful, asinine thinking that by not releasing on PC 'THEY ARE JUST LEAVING MONEY ON THE TABLE!!11!!!!!'.

Sony is a traditional platform owner that operates in a way that is consistent with their model over the years. And, they should be. They want to sell Playstations, Sony products, and to encourage people into their ecosystem. They want to develop content, hardware, and services to earn revenue. And, they do that. The idea that they're going to magically start sharing revenue on their highly prized stable of IP with a range of competitors is hilariously laughable.

This is all just brand extension. Nothing more. We're on day 2 of gaming forums around the world speculating on what Sony is doing in the PC space - based on a Steam listing for 'Days Gone', a game that people mocked relentlessly on release.

But I really liked.

That's the kind of advertising that money can't buy. We have been talking about Sony, Sony's games, Sony's decisions, and what Sony will do next. Not Microsoft, not Nintendo, not Valve. That's what they want us doing.
