And I would expect to see PS5 start eating into Switch sales as PS5 availability continues to improve.

I honestly can’t see Switch continuing the streak it’s on when there are PS5s on the shelf.
Nintendo Switch is currently having stock issues.

Also the biggest 3rd party game ever in Japan in this generation is a month away from releasing on Nintendo Switch.

I don't see PS5 affecting Switch in any way or Switch affecting PS5 - both are pretty much aimed at diffrent segments of the market with some overlap - but even then it's more of that userbase buying both.

I'm almost convinced that 20k PS5 are mostly or at least half are from scalpers who would sell the consoles to other regions, hence little to no PS software sales data in Japan.

Though to be fair there's not much new releases worthy of checking out on PS5 since launch.

Story of the season will sell more than BD2.

That was expected for months, Olive Town is very likely to become a million seller.. while Bravely Default 2 would probably be knee capped by Square shipping too few copies and as a JRPG it won't have similar legs to a Story of Seasons game

Why do you think the PS5 poses more threat to Switch than the PS4? The PS4 being available has never stopped the Switch's streak.

I'm guessing that the million prediction for Olive Town includes digital?

Just to be on the safe side, I will say yes, but won't be surprised if it does it physically as well.

It just has really good synergy with New Horizon audience, seems like the most feature full entry into the franchise, there is additional DLC already announced which prior games of the franchise never got. I don't anticipate a new game in the franchise until 2023/2024, so it should continue to sell a steady amount beyond it's first year on the market. I won't be surprised if for example next year it's sells over 250K additional copies physically.

Also we can now say that Marvelous has a pretty good track record of outperforming expectations

Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns in 2016 managed nearly 200K sales and that was a mainline game in the franchise on the 3DS, perhaps the release time was unfortunate for the game as the 3DS was winding down. Before that they had Harvest Moon: Linking the New World which did 250K after launching in 2012.
Compare that to Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town a 3-D remake of a Gameboy game, usually remakes don't do well in Japan yet with digital it probably surpassed both Trio of Towns and Linking the New World currently sitting at over 167K physical sales

There is also Sakuna which is currently Marvelous best selling game in Japan, across the PS4/Switch it's already close to 500K and should surpass this figure by mid-year, as we know it's over 220K physical across the two platforms. According to Nintendo's shipment data it's sold at least 150K digitally in 2020, PS4 version also had some stock problems so I don't think it would be surprising if it sold 30K on there digitally, making the game likely above 400K shipped+digital in Japan at the moment.

We've known for a few months that retailers will have ordered at least 200K copies for the launch, and it's looking very likely that the game could be the third biggest launch for a third party on the system. People didn't expect Momotaro to have such a large shipment that sold out so quickly, but especially with these type of games retailers don't underestimate demand because they know even if they order half a million they will sell it eventually without needing to cut the price.
It's competition at the moment is Age of Calamity but unlike Age of Calamity it's not a musou so legs will be much better, I anticipate it will also have better legs than DQXIS which despite showing stellar legs for an JRPG, had already launched on the 3DS/PS4 - so it can't reach the heights of a hypothetical DQXII:

Top 10 Third Party launches on Switch
  1. Momotaro Dentetsu (Konami) - 345.697
  2. Dragon Quest XI S (Square Enix) - 303.204
  3. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Koei Tecmo) - 173.215
  4. Yo-kai Watch 4 (Level 5) - 150.721
  5. Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Square Enix) - 127.404
  6. Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) - 109.579
  7. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Capcom) - 94.973
  8. eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 (Konami) - 94.876
  9. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) - 75.505
  10. Derby Stallion (Game Addict) - 74.244

For Bravely Default 2 the game is likely to have supply problems,so I think the initial shipment will only allow it to sell somewhere between 100-130K in it's launch week, depending on restock, WoM, future DLC we shall see how far it goes but its been noted that demand really picked up in the last few weeks. Retailers and Square continue to underestimate demand for JRPGs, same thing happened with Octopath & Trials of Mana - both those games took forever to restock.
Square seems to only have trust in Dragon Quest when it comes to Switch - DQB2 for example had a shipment of around 200K all the way back in December 2018, while DQXIS had a shipment of around 400K those are pretty big differences compared to how they will treat Bravely Default 2 but I'm not too worried about the game I think it will surpass prior entries now that the reviews are out, seems it's a very decent game and there is nothing recent really competing with it. However I do think Rune Factory 5 will end up easily outselling it when it launches in a couple of months, at least early signs are pointing towards it having very strong pre-orders - hence a strong initial shipment and strong support planned by Marvelous. Compare that to Square who don't really bother supporting games like Octopath Traveler that end up selling 2.5 mil World Wide(a great result for any other Japanese Developer)
Square really seems to launch games and move on, and that limits their long-term sales - whether it's DQB2 or Octopath, or something else - if they supported those games with some additional content in 6-12 months I think they would have gotten a much better result.

Yes, because PS5 has magically games that appeal to the Japanese way more than PS4 games did. Face it - Japan is mobile land, they prioritise comfort and portability and not graphics and walking simulators.

It's more that games which appeal to a wide variety of people do well. And while the games they give PlayStation a boost in the West come out pretty much every year (COD, Assains Creed, Sport games EA shooters), the ones that boost PlayStation in Japan like Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy come out far less frequently.

Sadly, it seems that Olive Town has a huge problems with loading times - so initial WoM won't be great. Marvelous need to get a patch out ASAP

Seems that Olive Town will be the third biggest launch by a Third Party on the Switch in COMG stores, considerably behind Momotaro & DQXIS but decently above Age of Calamity. This will be a record launch for Marvelous, but they got to get an update out ASAP for the load times as currently that's the main criticism for the game.
This will move them into the 3rd place in the Publisher Rankings for 2021 with around 250K to 300K software sales across Switch/PS4

Marvelous Launches
  1. [PSV] Kan Colle Kai (2016) - 137.201
  2. [3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking the New World (2014) - 116.922
  3. [3DS] Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns (2016) - 110.597
  4. [PSV] Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus (2013) - 91.639
  5. [3DS] Rune Factory 4 (2012) - 88.700
Top 5 Marvelous Titles
  1. [DS] Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness (2007) - 304.660
  2. [3DS] Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (2012) - 264.042
  3. [3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking the New World (2014) - 259.111
  4. [DS] Harvest Moon: Twin Villages (2010) - 212.870
  5. [NSW/PS4] Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (2020) - 210.512

As expected Square and retailers didn't end up shipping a big amount for Bravely Default 2 and the game will end up having a launch either similar or slightly worse than Octopath Traveler. The real problem will be if the second week faces more stock problems, it's up to retailers to decide the initial shipment but in the past Square has been unable to stock their games in a timely manner on the Switch - Octopath & Trials of Mana both faced multiple weeks severe shortages that hurt their long term sales on the platform. Only games Square hasn't undershipped on the Switch are DQB2 and DQXIS
For Bravely Default 2, all signs point to a shipment of between 100K to 120K

Dragon Quest XI S - 303.204 / 629.337 (initial shipment >400K)
Bravely Default - 144.909 / 382.958 (initial shipment >160K)
Dragon Quest Builders 2 127.404 - 295.237 (initial shipment >200K)
Octopath Traveler - 109.579 / 193.780 (initial shipment >120K)
Bravely Second: End Layer - 97.220 / 167.489 (initial shipment >190K)
Trials of Mana - 70.144 / 112.277 (initial shipment >80K)

It's really sad to see a game who sold 7.521 units to enter the top 10 in Japanese sales ranking, and a game selling 1,370 copies in the top 30. RIP Japan.

Yeah I was reading about that. They shouldn't have rushed the game for the end of their fiscal year.

Also seems like Square have undershipped enough physical copies of one of their Switch games AGAIN!

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Yep, Sony is dead in Japan.
Seems to me they accepted defeat there. With the shipment allocations and all.

They could do OK with the right investments. I don't think they're gonna beat Nintendo but..come on.. They can do better than this.

Marvelous is hoping to get some of the issues patched out on Olive Town by mid-March. Overall rushing the game out might have negative consequences but if they can sort it out, it's the type of game that sales the majority of its units over a long-period of time and the additional content they have planned should help it long term escape the negative backlash of the release. This could have been avoided by delaying it in Japan, perhaps if Rune Factory 5 is having similar issues - it will be a lesson to the company. So far it's doing alright on Amazon.co.jp outside of it's 2.0 ranking.
