Today I killed my PS4 Pro and don't regret it one bit

As per thread title i got so frustrated with this fucking thing kicking into 100% fan speed, I got out my thermal paste and compressed air to clean this noisy bastard.

Long story short I fucked up the power supply connector accidently while trying to pry it loose with pliers. Instead of the connector loosening, the whole fucking connector to the board just fell off.

Fuck you Sony. Fuck you long time. You make wonderful games but your hardware and build quality of a fucking embarrassment to consumers.
Yes I could have taken my console over to a pro to clean but I have done this before with 0 issue and it did improve for a few months (noise wise) but then it slowly returned to jet mode. I should not have to open up my console to make it quiet. So fuck you again Sony.

Now I'm going to put this thing on display in my TV cabinet. I created this thread to rant a little but there are some positives here. I get to give Sony a break and I'm going to be picking up an Xbox Series S next week and make sure I get gamepass ultimate and jam on Xbox for a while. I hope my SteelSeries 7 is compatible with Xbox.

I will drop my Xbox username here and I hope to hook up with some of you guys on Xbox soon.

Have a great weekend guys

I don't sit close enough to my PS4 Pro to care when the fans kick in. I might try to repair it myself if it needed it though since I'll hopefully be able to land a PS5 in a couple of months.

it is one noisy bitch, but one hell of a console.
Yes it is. I just got fed up trying to play Call Of Duty and I could hear the thing through my headphones.
Also apparently the power connector just coming off the board is a common issue.
Came across a dozen reports of people experiencing the same thing.
But I'm not going to bother to take this in for repairs, atleast not now.
I'll be happy to try another platform.
For those suggesting Series X. Yeah would like one but it's fucking sold out everywhere including here in my region.
I'm not paying over retail for one either.
Series S will be alright until either Series X or PS5 is readily available.

why the heck were you using pliers at all?

The connector on the power supplies are tight as fuck. This is also a known issue with the connectors. Some people use pliers to slowly pry them loose.
I've watched a dozen video tutorials that either mention pliers when it comes to removing the connector. Mine was really tough to get off. Even with the connector coming off the board I still had issues removing it. I mean it was rather pointless to remove but just goes to show how fucking tight these things sit in that socket.

Eeewwww series S? Good luck...

You clumsily took a pair of pliers to your console, fucked it up, and now it's Sony's fault?
If the console had proper ventilation or designed with a more efficient cooling method in place , you wouldn't need to open up the fucking thing to keep it quiet.

The console absurd noise levels are well known and there are tons of maintenance videos online to help you keep noise levels down.
It's poor hardware design. End of.
But thanks defending Sony here. I'll make sure you get your medal of honor sent over asap.

Mine has been really quiet lately. I haven’t turned on my PS4 pro once since the PS5 launched. I don’t even have a PS5; I’m just annoyed at Sony right now and don’t want to give them any money till they let me give them $499.

"God made me do it"

I'm not defending Sony more than attacking your incompetence and deflection.

It's pretty common to rip the power supply off when trying to open it. People who repair PS4s see it all the time.

One thing I found that helped a bit is putting my ps4 on a laptop stand, one of the ones designed for maximal airflow. I turned a cheap plastic one upside down so that the 4 pillar legs are what's touching the ps4 and the flat surface is on the shelf. It kinda looks cool on an angle.

Yep I just seen a metric fuck ton of people reporting that issue on Reddit, YouTube etc.
I was considering the laptop stand but in the end it wouldn't solve the internal dust issues.

I tried this on my Pro and stopped at this point. The PSU connector just wouldn't come off without some kind of kung-fu grip and a lot of pressure so I decided to reassemble it and cut my losses. I just cleaned what I could and it helped the airflow, but now I have a bunch of thermal pads I have no use for.

Sorry, OP. You can probably buy the part on ebay or something.

Welcome to the quiet side. I think you’ll be shocked at how quiet it is when you first turn it on and play.

If you are going to get the S and gamepass make sure you have a fairly large external drive if you plan on playing a lot of games, only keep the games in the internal that you are actively playing.

What are you going to play? I have a Xbox since it came out and Gamepass for years. It does not replace the Sony ecosystem at all with their exclusives, PS Plus and first-party games. My Xbox is looking sad actually.

I have a PS5 too and it's now my main console. Hopefully you are able to get one soon because it will resolve all your issues. You can even plug your PS4 hard drive and play your PS4 games right away.

Not sure people understand what you actually did. This is VERY common and often happens without any real force applied.

Sometimes these surface anchored connectors are not very strong and it's a common point of failure. It's just a surface mount connector held in place by an anchor point on either side. Connectors like USB and HDMI plugs often fail for the same reason. I really don't know why they aren't anchored through the PCB.

If it just lifted off the board but didn't damage the contacts on the board it's a pretty easy fix to reattach that power connector with just some flux and a soldering iron to reflow the soldered points. When I took apart my Elite controller to do maintenance the connection point between the two boards in the controller broke free from the main board and repaired it this way. The power connector in the PS4 is much easier to repair.

If you're up to it, give it a shot. If it works, just epoxy around it so that it doesn't happen again. Noisy or not you might want to play it again some day.

Nooo get the Series X over the S. I think it's the better fit for you considering you had the Pro.
Availability in my region is an issue. Series Z is always sold out as is PS5.
And I'm not paying over $1000 for a Series X or PS5.

Like I said , I'm happy to game on Series S for now. Just not another Pro. I really can't be arsed to sit through more gaming sessions with the fans near max.
