Outriders demo | impressions thread

That was some of the worst trash I have played in some time. Holy shit, this is what the industry thinks people want nowdays? We're in deep shit, folks.

- The graphics are fucking terrible
- The voice acting is even worse
- CUTSCENE loading screen CUTSCENE loading screen CUTSCENE loading screen
- Just let me skip the entire cutscene instead of making me hammer the escape..I mean space..no I mean escape...Jesus game, pick one?
- It's a cover based shooter where your character doesn't get in cover unless you specifically target a sweet spot on the cover and press space at exactly the right time (I'm sure that'll be SUPER FUN in challenging content)
- Oh hey, generic loot so generic it makes vanilla Destiny look like the peak of creativity
- It would be nice if my guns fired bullets instead of harsh language (The Division syndrome!)
- Waist high walls? I guess this is where the next fight is! The combat arenas (and that's all the game is) were designed by an intern from Gears 5. A particularly untalented one!
- Skill pool has about as much depth as your typical Euro-trash shooter
- I love being locked in small arenas with enemies that magically get vomited out from a spawn location until an invisible bar is filled
- ...and who doesn't love shooter games with melee enemies that move like Sonic the Hedgehog and don't have hitstun

I bailed after a few hours. This is the Division, but with half the talent and budget. We must be experiencing some kind of serious gaming drought to even consider playing this kind of garbage for $60.

Ok so I played a bit for an hour or so and here's my thoughts about yours:

-The graphics are not terrible but not good either. They're just ok I guess or generic.
-Same applies to voice acting, I've heard a lot worse but it does feel like dude-bro acting which may be what they aimed for in the first place.
-Yes that is absolute shit., the cutscene transition, the 30 fps, the jitters, etc.
-Yeah theres like 3 types of different cutscenes lol
-More annoyingly you have to HOLD space to move out from cover to cover which is annoying, unless you can change that. It's trying to mix Destiny non-cover combat with Division cover combat and does not do particually good at either. It was better if they actually focused on one or the other.
-Loot may change with final game.
-Weapons don't feel punchy but instead they chose SO MUCH BLOOD EFFECTS SPLATTER to compensate which is annoying.
-Yeah it's more linear than I expected.
-Did not go into much depth with it, but it looks better than Destiny 2 so I guess it's not that bad.
-Eh, seen worse. It's fine.
-Had no issues with the melee but I did play the Technomancer and I just melee froze everyone.

Would also add, cutscene camera is absolute garbage. Worst shit I've ever seen. Headbobbing needs to be in the game. The amount of blur is garbage.

I'd say it's not a bad game, it's definetly not good either. It's more of a 6/7 out of 10. I would not recommend anyone preordering it. It has this Anthem'ish feeling to it, as if we will be lacking in a lot content.

I think the story is good - or at least it has a straight narrative that isn't trying to be more than it needs to be (ANTHEM and DESTINY spring to mind). The cutscene direction though REALLY hurts the story they are trying to tell and some of the VA work is inconsistent.

. . other than that they've laid some good groundwork for killing things come April.
Yeah i mean its some glorious eurojank with competent gunplay and pretty funny dialogues here and there, the presentation is definitely on the rough side of affairs but hey, I have played Two Worlds / Risen / Gothic / Elex so it really REALLY isn't bothering me lol

Controls are a bit trash in this game and you don't realize it until World Tier 4 when you try to go into cover and nothing happens. This game can't decide whether or not it's a cover shooter or a Destiny wannabe. Cover seems to only be effective for enemies while you're left rolling around until your cooldowns complete.

And that's another thing, cool downs are too long on most abilities. 30 seconds is too long when it's impossible to take cover when the controls don't respond or it's grenade fest from the enemies. Either make cover effective or fix the cool downs. Rolling around like a fool while still being shot is stupid. Game is fun up until you try to solo at world tier 4. Fighting Altered enemies is frustrating with the shitty cooldowns.

Damn dude the Worth A Buy guy went full scorched on this game. Absolutely hates it.

One thing I agree with him on is the controls. They need some reworking and some tightening up

I think he was a little harsh in other areas

2 maddening things. Using an ability or melee from cover doesn't put u back into cover. And there is a delay. So u do something. then start getting shot while ur exposed before u can get back into cover. Which i guess makes sense. but doesn't feel good.

Trying to mark things as junk is so slow...that nothing happen until u wait 2 seconds before the game will allow u to mark the next item.
I do enjoy the violence, 80's-90's action movie feel, and some of the levity. Where ridiculous things happen and ur just like "oh well"

In all honesty

You're just bad at it. Cooldowns are extremely short and the game is exactly like Vanquish in regards to cover : its there to be "there" but really it should basically not be used like 95% of the time. This ISN'T a cover shooter by any means lol, you'll survive way more just sprinting like a maniac while using melee, since it does a leaping aoe attack which will damage enemies and trigger health regen in the process (its particularly effective on the Technomancer, since his leaping attack literally triggers an aoe freeze)

Like, straight up the number one thing that will put you in a bad situation in Outriders is actually playing it like a cover shooter.

I remember the same kind of criticism back when Quantum Break was launched, thinking about it. I think people are too used to these elements being "prevalent" in the core gameplay of other titles featuring cover systems, and putting these patterns at use instead of playing differently / as intended in the very game they're playing

Played some more tonight, got Pyro to level 6. I may mess around with the other classes but my enthusiasm for this game has definitely diminished with this demo, at this point its something I will wait and pick up on sale. The game world itself is just a huge disappointment, its just these small arena areas broken up by awkward loading transitions like jumping a small gap or climbing a small ledge. When your competition is the open hugely detailed world of Div 2 and the smaller but still way more open and interesting environments of Destiny 2, this just doesnt cut it in the year of our lord 2021.

. . .the cooldowns are ALL less than 30 seconds (and much quicker on The Pyromancer). I beat the demo Boss at World Tier 4 and had no real problems with it. Maybe you're just spamming cooldowns when you should be using them more strategically: like not wasting the Whatever Blade the Trickster has on a single enemy, or using the Tanks hero power to either clean up a group of mobs are get out of trouble.

I dunno; the game has some issues it needs to get ironed out. . .ability cooldowns is nowhere on the developers radar I imagine.

Oh hey. Welcome to the thread! You're like, 4 hours late for the conversation. Have fun reading everything, because smarter people than you already had this discussion. I doubt you have anything to contribute except poor grammar and the overuse of internet slang that people stop using when they reach adulthood.

(ah shit, that makes 3 people! sorry, @w0s)
Are you just posting this to everyone you reply to because I didn’t use internet slang or poor grammar. You are obviously the one with nothing to contribute so you immediately get all hostile like a kid throwing a tantrum. Grow up before you reply to me next time and maybe we’ll be able to have a civilized conversation.

yeah, i do agree, enemies has like eagle vision, does not matter what you do, you always get hit, it is like you are a magnet, nonsense really.

played technomancer and devastator. while technomancer heal from damage output, devastator just from close range, while devastator is pretty good with mobs but with bosses is pretty bad, you don't have how to heal ,so you are in the open with no healing, if bosses shoot bullets, you can reflect the damage to him while he done 0 to you, but man, if boss does not shoot bullets like last boss in the demo? you are fuckek. not sure how other two classes are healing but with devastator it is a huge problem on WT5, so what is going to happen with higher tiers? WT10?WT15?

i will try other 2 classes to see what is what.

Something about this game looks interesting to me. How does the gameplay feel related to other franchises? I play a lot of Division, how does it compare to that, as opposed to feeling more like a Destiny/Gears etc?

Almost like they were trying to tell us something......
It's almost like it's a People Can Fly thing.

Bulletstorm promo material: HAR HAR! YOU CAN'T JUMP OVER FENCE IN THEM CALL OF DUTIES!

Bulletstorm the game: There's no fucking jump button in the game, the play space is constantly gated off by unclimbable knee-high fences.

Outriders promo material: HAR HAR! COVER'S FOR PUSSIES!

Outriders the game: Spends 10 minutes to teach you how to use a dedicated cover button. The sheer number of chest-high walls in levels makes The Division blush.

On the other hand, if a barkeep tells you that ale is for pussies, but keeps pouring you ale, I guess he is trying to tell you something after all.

It's okay. The environments hurt it though, being bland and repetitive. I can't even tell where I am supposed to be half the time. Just an odd hodgepodge of corridors.

My game crashed shortly after the prologue and now i have to do it all over again to proceed.
Thanks but no thanks

Gunplay feels really clunky which is the dealbreaker for me, doesn't feel good at all
Visuals are ok, nothing breathtaking but it's not terrible
The writing is godawful and the story doesn't grab me at all.

I give them credit for putting out a demo though....

Hmmm.

Still undecided. Downloaded on PC and had a good time playing the Trickster.

This game might be a 'good' bad game. If you accept that it's not going to come close to replacing any sort of live service shooter and take it for what it is, a one-off standalone purchase, it might actually be quite a lot of fun. I can imagine there being all sorts of broken builds that are amusing to play with.

Will probably pick it up. But definitely on PC. Mouse controls are infinitely better.

I am polish. There is nothing to brag about. It's a shithole and stop being so damn proud... or at least make the characters be from poland and speak polish.

Really fun in coop with a friend and really looking forward to release. Game didnt really start to shine until lvl 7 when I started getting blue stuff with perks etc. My friend played Techno while I played Pyro, great combo. Trickster was fun but too chaotic and half the time I had no clue to where my partner was.

wouldn’t buy it for sp though.

. . .holy hell. You spent 10 minutes figuring out the cover system. Maybe it's not the game here -

Cutscenes are kinda weird in this game, it goes from having half the screen being taken up by black bars, to full screen, to really small black bars that take up what looks like maybe 100 lines of pixels, and it changes between them almost at random even when all of the shots seem to be in game 🤨

Its okay but obviously needs some fixing. Lore is interesting. Cover system is kind of broken at the moment. Game would need a good story to motivate me to play further. Which I doubt will be the case. I only played Technomancer which was fun because Sniper Rifles = heads getting blown

And dear lord don’t do shakey cam during cutscens if the frame pacing is that fucked. It is awful during cutscenes, outside of them the game is a solid framerate (at least on SX) there’s nothing that should cause that much hitching in some of these scenes.

They/Them A-10 Warthog
Played through the demo twice and here are my impressions.

I hate to say this because I am sure the devs think they made something great but my God this is the most bland copy/paste ever. They basically took their work on the gears of war prequel and slapped destiny on top along with a heavy slathering of generic story. The combat is solid but the game is "arena based" and has no real sense of exploration (dont think it has open world or even open zones). Based on the first map the game world has branching linearity.

I also hate the armor design and the brown as hell color palette.

The game's lore is a bit of a mess as well. Three of the classes are classical mage architypes but the fourth class for some reason is made into a weird engineer mage which doesn't really make sense based on the games own logic.

Lastly while not an ugly game, it looks like a mid-gen ps4 title even when maxed on pc. Next gen it certainly isnt.

If your dream game is gears of war x destiny then I'd give it a shot, otherwise dont waste your money or time.

Sounds filmic.

Sounds filmic.
Funny enough at first it actually reminded me of partially done IMAX movies done to Blu-Ray where it switches between formats, but running through the intro again it’s a little weirder than that, when you see the three switches between scenes and they’re all done within seconds of each other at seemingly absolute random aspect ratios between shots.

I think it's pretty solid. Seems like the final game will be even better. Just a quality shlooter, not expecting GOTY type material.

It's also Squeenix, so there is a chance they fuck it up with MTX and monetization and shit. I think it'll be hilarious if this game ends up being better received and lasting longer than that Avengers trash. I guess they have less marketing dollars for this one, I haven't seen tons of influencers and big gaming podcast people shilling for this like they did with Avengers.

Anyone know if you can blow arms and legs off? I know you can heads.

I don't think even Borderlands franchise gives me such instant gratification, and fun skills to be used in a videogame. Destiny had so much potential to have fun skills and useful against bosses, but most of them are so meh and take such a long time to recharge. Also the power level system is trash, and items are balanced with PVP in mind.

Meanwhile I can do this in Outriders

Jesus fuck I love this game..

I’m not pissed or anything I would just like for you to show me where it was juvenile or offensive because nothing I said was offensive. Now the way you responded originally was definitely both those things you’re trying to accuse my comment of but it doesn’t bother me because that’s just anonymous internet person trying to sound intellectual and make their selves feel better.

If you’re not gonna be proud of your country, nobody else certainly will. And it’s definitely not shithole - 16K $ per capita. Kurwa.

Now, is anyone else having problem getting into game right now?

Overall pretty good impression. Then again, I also liked a lot Avengers, Anthem, Mass effect Andromeda and Warframe.
Gameplay wise it's a solid third person shooter: I really like the weapons design, the skills and the class trees. Thumb all the way down on the blood splatter: this game is built around aggressive shooting, yet as soon as you are halfway through your health bar the screen gets covered in blood, vision gets blurred and everything turns into a black and white paste. Either push for cover mechanics or push for aggressive tactics.
Story is beyond bad, feels like they hired a 15 year old to write it down, but I have to say the demo was worth playing for the laughs I got out of the Mccain side quest alone. I keep getting Andromeda deja vus throughout the storyline but whatever, if the side quests are as short as sweet as the Mccain one, I won't care about main plot too much.
Sound effects are godtier and easily what I liked the most about the game. I do think they need to implement waaay better sound and visual cues to signal abilities cooldowns, but otherwise the screams, the skills activations and guns sound absolutely fantastic.
Not digging the voice acting though. Don't know what's going on but the MC sounds like he's voiced by three different people.
Still not a day one buy but, again, I'm left with a good first impression and I hope the game will stick. Best wishes to the devs.

I went back and played some more, and most of my thoughts haven't changed, except:

They really rushed through the prologue. Maybe slow it down, do some more exploring...actually give time to get to know the people before everything goes to hell. Your character goes into the typical rough life talk..... It's so BASIC.

Let the prick bad guy at the start have a slow build at being a prick instead of just suddenly.

Games and shows these days act as if everyone has ADHD.

Do something about character creation. Why is it a lot of games now have the same damn shaved heads? Why do most of the guy faces look the same, and why can body styles be different?

It's all cookie cutter patterns. Lazy.

I did like the death animations, skin and flesh tearing off bones or whatever, but it shouldnt happen all the time.

Story could be OK, but plays like a bad late night scifi movie. The woman who puts you in cryo is stupid aggressive to you for no damn reason when you first meet her again, everyone calls you outrider...how about the people that know you call you by...your name?

They make being an outrider sound like it should BE something with no actual anything to back it up.

Is it the same handful of people that work on the same games? Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, Destiny, Avengers?

Can something kinda original pop up? Geez.

Yeah I really liked it. Played till Tier 3 only.
Also which sick asshole psychopath decided no option to turn off Motion Blur. Thank god you can do manually.

Hopelessly outclassed in terms of visual design. In Destiny enemies pop out, in Outriders I can barely see them.
and I liked the Story/Dialogues/dude-bro voice acting. Not much pandering or talking in circles like how most video games character does.

Edit: Also PC performance was baaad compared to how the game looks. Gamers wants developers to focus on FPS than GRAPHICS and then complain the graphics looks bad. 3 weeks from launch they PeopleCanFly better sort this out, which they will. Bulletstorm.

I just tried this demo on PS4. While the game itself plays okay, I could tell this game clearly wasn't designed for it mind.
Very low visual detail, horrific cut-scene performance, and insanely small text sizes leads me to believe this game was never intended to be played on a distant monitor. Let alone a game console.
In the accessibility menu, there's an option for larger fonts and a high contrast mode, but even with it turned on, it does not universally apply across the board. I can barely read half of anything that appears on screen most of the time.

This is just an awful experience across the board to be honest. However that being said, I did have some fun playing as a teleporting mutant ninja with a shotgun.
But until they improve the UI (especially font sizes) and cutscene issues, this game is gonna be a hard pass from me.

Started playing more of this game on PC and got to the town and rescued Jabuka. At this point, this game is a strong buy. It's using the Gears formula but has way better story, better characters and I love the RPG elements of the game that push it slightly above a typical action shooter.

Strongly recommended.
