Final Fantasy VII Remake director says fans will have to wait for Part 2 for full use of PS5, Naoki Hamaguchi will also take over as director

Final Fantasy 7 Remake players will have to wait for Part 2 before the series makes full use of the PlayStation 5‘s hardware features, according to its director.

Set for release on June 10, FF7 Remake Intergrade is a PS5 port of last year’s JRPG, with improved visuals, significantly faster loading times, a Photo Mode, haptic feedback and a new episode featuring character Yuffie.

However, director Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu that fans should not expect the series to make full use of PlayStation 5’s feature set until the eventual release of Part 2.

“In terms of graphics, lighting and textures are the main adjustments [in Intergrade], but environmental effects such as fog have also been added to further enhance the sense of realism and immersion in the world,” he said.

Asked if the game would support DualSense haptics and 3D audio, Nomura replied: “As for adaptive triggers, they are partially supported. However, in terms of using all of the features of PlayStation 5, please wait for the next game where we can start from scratch.”

One of the biggest additions to the PS5 version of Remake is the Photo Mode. However, Nomura said fans should expect something simpler than the camera option included in Kingdom Hearts 3 Re Mind.

“The concept of this mode is different from the camera mode of Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind, so you can’t change your expression or pose. This is just a mode to capture a scene as a memory. There are no requirements to use this mode, so you can start using it right away,” he said.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 has entered full production and Nomura has said he wants to deliver it “as soon as possible.”

In the same Famitsu interview published this week, Nomura confirmed he would be stepping away from his role for the next FF7 Remake instalment. The veteran artist and designer will instead take on a broader creative director position, overlooking all future Final Fantasy 7 projects including the recently announced mobile games.

In November 2019, the director confirmed that work on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 was already underway. Part 1 is a timed PlayStation 4 exclusive for 12 months, which means that Square Enix could release Xbox and PC versions of the game as soon as March.

Nomura has previously suggested that future instalments in the episodic title could focus on smaller sections of the original game, in order to release them faster.

The comments come from the Japanese Ultimania book, in which Nomura is quoted as saying that “if we divide the story into large parts, it’ll take longer to make. If we divide it into more detailed smaller sections, then developing it will be faster. I hope to release the next one ASAP.”

Why do they need to start from scratch, can't they just turn the sliders up to max? Isn't PC max settings what constitutes to next generation graphics.

I suspect Nomura have dirt on SE board of directors at this point. I mean how is it possible for him to have more control?
Damn near every project he's associated with is successful and goes on to do mostly well critically.
Regardless of what you personally think of him as an artist, his designs are some of the most iconic in industry.

I'm not fan of how of how Nomura has come to dominate the visually identity of Final Fantasy, but I'm not going to pretend there isn't an appeal there.

Except because of him the company bleed money and another director had to be brought in for the rescue in one of their biggest projects (FFXV) but funny how the credit goes to Nomura.

Hey I was looking forward to FF Versus XIII/XV since the beginning (2006.) I'm still sour on the outcome lol

I suppose that can be attributed to Nomura botching things up as the initial director, I wouldn't claim he's above being criticized.
Although it can also be attributed to him being spread too thin across multiple productions. He was eventually pulled from FFXV to co-direct KH III & FFVII Remake.
Which made sense after much of the groundwork for what would become FFXV was already in place, although I'm not a fan of the execution.

Of course Nomura should get credit for that, why shouldn't he? A lot of the concepts and DNA in FFXV is from Nomura. That isn't to say Tabata wasn't credited for this leadership and work on FFXV.
Maybe you think Tabata deserve more credit relative to Nomura, but that's another discussion.

The only thing that concerns me about Nomura stepping down, is that he was the one who insisted during Part 1's development that they have the story stick close to the events of the original. The other leads wanted to steer further away.

Not surprising since he helped write the original, regardless I’m sure he’ll still be involved in the development to some degree

Damn, they got the loading from 40 seconds to 2...and its not making full use of the PS5?

Shieeeeet.

I know the SSD isnt the whole console, but curious what else they can do.

Dude has made amazing games! KH1,2, FF7R are universally acclaimed games, and FFXV (half him) and KH3 are solid too
FF7R is not a universally acclaimed game by any stretch and a lot of the criticisms have to do with Nomura's role. I wonder what part he played in the hilariously stupid time ghosts or the not so subtle but oh so stupid part where you actually fight destiny as a boss fight or the nonsensical trash tier teenage philosophy drenched ending.

I'd say boot him to try and salvage it but Square aren't the same company anymore and haven't been for a long time.

FF7R currently has a 95% rating on OpenCritic, with more GOTY awards than any Square Enix game in history and Nomura got more Best Director awards than any FF director ever.

Cope harder.

Yeah, they’re actually good now.

I think "start from scratch" means Part 2 won't just be the PS4 game/engine enhanced on PS5, since Intergrade is them porting the PS4 game to PS5 à la Remastered.

I think it’s a bit screwed up that part one is on PS4, but none of the others will be.
Then again, I guess part 2 won’t have n64 doors.

It's not? Pretty sure it got grade reviews across the board. Try harder to troll please.

Nomura is a fine designer, but a TERRIBLE director in both overall story complexity (and having it actually make sense) and sticking to a release date. Too bad they didn't contract the Gooch to come in for the next installment.

Translation: Let's sell the same game again to PS5 owners (for 70 Dollars/Euros). Once the install base has grown, we'll sell them part two. Followed by an 8K remaster for 70 Euros/Dollars that unites both parts of the game.

This industry sucks.

Just so we’re clear; Sakaguchi has objectively made the absolute worst Final Fantasy product of all time with Spirits Within — which almost killed the entire franchise, while Nomura has single-handedly revitalised the franchise at least 5 times over.

Just say you don’t like Final Fantasy. Or that you’re stupid.

This is awesome just because so much of Square's output from the two generations has been stylized in ways that I've never cared for. At all. Even a little.

Sorry Nomura, you're a fantastic director. Didn't know you were a GAF member.

B-But I don't like Nomura why hasn't he been fired yet?!

KH3 best selling KH game ever only half a year after its release

Again only 3 months after release.

Yea I wonder why the guy bringing in the most money into SE hasn't been fired yet 🤷‍♂️.

Of course not when they don’t meet your narrative!
They really shouldn't matter, given how many times people say they don't pay attention to reviewers and subsequent GOTY awards. It's the console warriors that like to bring up certain exclusives getting 90+ scores and then also downplaying the competition. Most people will just talk about why they like or dislike Final Fantasy VII Remake or some other game and what they're looking forward to in the next entry.

Yeah, they’re actually good now.
A 95% "recommend" rating, not a 95% review score rating which is actually at 88% on opencritic. It sits at 87 on Metacritic with "generally favourable" reviews, falling short of universal acclaim. There are 3 scores of 60% and 7 scores of 70% including a 60% from EGM and a 70% from Edge. That's not universal acclaim. Best director awards were not even a thing during the old FF games so that's an irrelevant point. Nice try though.

So do we think the other parts will be exclusive too?
They'll probably be timed exclusive too given how closely Square and Sony seem to be working this gen (FFXVI timed exclusive, Project Athia timed exclusive, FF7 Remake on Ps+ this month, etc).

Yeah I think he is one of the worst writers in modern AAA gaming, but it's hard to deny he is one of the most successful people at Square right now, at least sales wise. I don't see him leaving any time soon.
At least his combat systems are usually really fun.

I don't understand the irrational hate boner people have for the guy

especially with the revelations that he's been the one to rein in Kitase & Nojima on their crazier suggestions for the story but people just want to blame Nomura for everything they don't like

Can't speak for others but my problem with him is the terrible cringy/cheesy writing in literally every single thing he has been in charge of for the past 20 years. Which wouldn't be much of an issue if he was making more action/gameplay heavy games, but he seems to be attached exclusively to story heavy RPG's.

Which is a shame because his games usually have nice production values and fun gameplay. But story is also a big part of them and when every cutscene makes you go:
Cringe Reaction GIF

It kinda ruins the experience.

FF7R at least wasn't too bad. Maybe because it's based on a better foundation than most other games he has worked on. But still, many of the added elements where pretty bad.
The whole thing with the ghosts and that part at the end where Everyone sort of goes out of character and starts talking about fighting destiny n' shit had his trademark cookie cutter shonen anime style of storytelling.

And on a less relevant note he weirdly seems to be getting worse and worse at designing characters as he gets older. He went from solid designs in games like OG FF7, to making stuff that look like someone trying to parody bad japanese character design

nomura still creative director though..

from what i understand they just promoted younger talent the co-director Hamauguchi which is good move in long term prospect. now final fantasy franchise has new blood director. or you guys rather have toriyama promoted to director instead? well i can imagine if even he refuse that position in favour of younger talent.

also from what i see this merely the team smooth out their structure thats all. nothing much.
before they have 1 director(nomura) with 2 co-director(hamauguchi & toriyama).
now they 'fixed' this by having 1 director(hamauguchi), 1 creative director(nomura) and 1 co-director(toriyama)

also for senior staff like kitase, nomura and toriyama the position might be 'just a name' as they surely hold more influence.
kitase for example is just a producer but he actually actively involved in creation of level design

in the end, things might be just ended up just same like part 1 development.

also

"..please wait for the next game where we can start from scratch.”

this is good news. next part of VII Remake developed from scratch solely on PS5/XSX. no more crossgen stuff. hopefully they utilize those ssd in creating big open area. should helped them to implement flying mount like airship too.
