Do people still carry 3DS while out for Steetpass?

Loved going around the city and getting streetpass hits. Was kinda sad that the Switch didn't have this feature.

I still take my 3DS out but streetpass hits don't come in like they use to sadly. Wondering if people still bother with Streetpass on their 3DS?

Really thought it would make a feature comeback seeing as Miitopia was coming to the Switch as a port.

Loved street pass, and for the same reasons the Mii plaza and miiverse. Wish they doubled down on that stuff with the Switch rather than giving up on it entirely.

Was fun just going shopping with the 3ds in your pocket and coming home and seeing who you met.

But no, don't do it anymore and haven't for years as the matches dried up, surprised you still get them where you are.

Miiverse would’ve been amazing on the switch, the port everything else over, they need to get that going.

When I was going into the office in my city in 2019 I would get 1 or 2 but since working from home I've not gone out much. Might slap the thing in my bag and just use the e-scooter and see if I get any hits. Would it work if I pass someones house or could it need to be close proximity?

I used to use a raspberry pi as a streetpass relay and grab them that way as i never got passes out in the real world but it's been years since i had my relay plugged in not sure the relay network is still running nowadays.
I did the same thing with an old router that’s sitting out in the garage. That’s going to be my Sunday project today.

So would you be able to hook that upto a long range antenna/dish and just snag up hits then connect your 3DS to it and it'll collect them? This sounds interesting.

It basically was a raspberry pi with a specific usb wifi dongle plugged into the usb port on your pi you then connected that by a lan cable to your router and it would go through the net to all the official & unoffical streetpass relays in the network harvesting the most recent streetpass data and then spoofing it to your own setup so your 3DS would just get hundreds of passes each hour. The script would cycle addresses every few mins so you could keep getting passes it was an amazing bit of kit. It was designed to autoboot the spillpass program when you powered on your pi so it could be left up & running in the background i ended up installing a screen into my pi setup using a brilliant case adafruit sells so i could make it into a dedicated relay unit. Including adding in buttons so i could shut it down properly from the front of the unit.

The project was called spillpass pi but like i have said i haven't had it connected in years so i don't know if it still works. Used to remember the animosity on here from salty bitches who would accuse you of cheating because you are not supposed to use the streetpass network like that lol. If you google spillpass pi you will find pages explaining how it was set up but i can't seem to find the creators website as his link doesn't seem to work anymore.

This was my first iteration before i made one of my pis a dedicated machine to do it.

I feel like the number of people taking their 3DS around dropped significantly when Switch released.. and then reduced even further once Smash Bros Ultimate became available.

The last time I remember getting some from people in the office building I worked at where a game dev was leasing was maybe 2016 or 2017.

Don't waste your time. Nintendo disabled their part of their server that allowed home pass to work.(Yes, I found that out once when I had a router set up to do that and it just stopped working one day.) Admittedly I haven't checked to see if anybody has set up their own server to replace it.

I’m so use to shutting mine off. If I’m on lunch somewhere, I’ll play in my car with the Windows rolled down or sitting outside somewhere. I don’t think I ever took advantage of it. I still buy stuff on the eShop. I’ve spent around $100 in the last couple months, so I wonder what Nintendo has in store. I don’t think unofficial support of this would bode well. Voiding ToS would be bad with as much eShop content on there.

Thanks for the heads up. I found the router, an old wrt that I bought in 06. Holy cow has technology really progressed in the past 15 years.

OMG I actually have a Pi 2 and that case. I'll have a look around online see if I can get this set up.

No problem. I actually found the old google docs page that I originally used to set it up years ago. They explain what nintendo shut off so it doesn't work anymore. Here's the page.

I got my New 3DS in late 2016. For about the first year and a half, I would occasionally take the system out with me. I often got a few hits near shopping centers or restaurants. By mid 2018, the hits decreased drastically, and soon after that I stopped taking the system out with me.

Maybe I'll take it out with me again one of these days, just to see what happens.

I used to walk all the gates at international departures lounge while I was waiting for the plane to board. I got a lot of hits but still didn't complete the world. The Japanese flights would always provide hits. Taking the 3DS to E3 was absolutely mental, so many hits but it maxed out until I accepted them, so it would have probably been way more.

Yeah as has been mentioned the "HomePass" system no longer works. I used and abused it for a LONG time until it shut down. I was able to collect a lot of extras (e.g. all bonus crossword puzzles in Crosswords 3DS) but sadly it is long dead. I still have a router configured to work with it but it's in storage as it no longer generates StreetPasses.

i still use it; even as a pedometer. i've gone through a 3dsxl, new 3dsxl and am currently using a new 2dsxl as my main. i still use a dsxl lite to play ds games.

Is this because it uses the Nintendo spot pass thing that was shut down? Or was it a 3DS update that killed it?

Used to during conventions and get a lot of street passes, ever since the Switch not anymore, my 3DS and DS have been pretty much in storage.

Yes, as described in the previously linked Google doc Nintendo shut down StreetPass relays completely. The "HomePass" homebrew was dependent on Nintendo's StreetPass architecture being active; since then no one has replicated that functionality.

I used to use the router trick to get street passes. I should get back into the 3DS and finish those game I own.

Do it. I recently picked mine back up because my Switch lite left stick got hit by drifting issues so had to order parts and ended up playing Pokemon ORAS for about a month now. Plus it's really good for homebrew I've seen. Might try that and load up all my GBA and DS games onto the thing.
