What would YOU want out of a Quake reboot/remake?

They should do a single player reboot of Quake 1 with shamblers and other strong monsters. Make the game hard, require learning enemy patterns to beat them, add slight RPG elements. Quake 1 aesthetic already looked like it inspired Souls games, borrowing some gameplay elements from it to get a sort of first person Souls with guns would be great.

And call it Quake 5, not something dumb.

Singleplayer like Quake 1, Multiplayer like Quake 3. Make it fresh and fast, gorgeous looking, and focus on PC (console versions should still release though). Get Trent Reznor to make the soundtrack again. Doom 2016 should be a good inspirational starting point, but Quake needs to be even faster.

Skill based movement. I know it won't work on a controller, but I don't care. Also, please please please no glory kills or any other kind of stupid mechanic that interrupts game flow.
Haha, I don't think we'll see Glory Kills or anything similar in the Quake series. I can see why they leaned into it and so hard with DOOM. Especially with the comic book being an influence. Well, plus they really leaned into Doom Slayer HAAAAAATING demons with a PASSION. But I could see reading that comic and then getting to the idea of fatalities which eventually became Glory Kills.

I think Trent’s moved past his NIN days. We wouldn’t get a Downward Spiral follow up if he did it....

I'd love a Doom 2016 style reboot with the style and vibe of the original Quake. No unique twists on multiplayers, either. Just give me some damn deathmatch.

I just checked and Quake Champions is still early access lol.

so... maybe they should figure out what they’re doing with that. Man, there’s got to be some way to make arena shooters viable again, right?

I started to write a completely different post about what I thought quake should be then I read it and realized what I had written would never cut it today.

Quake is in a bad spot. People are overwhelmed by shooters Overwatch, counter strike, COD, Fortnite, Rainbow 6, and a dozen other shooters. I really enjoyed the time I spent with Quake Champions but I recognize it’s a hard sell in today’s market especially with it’s nineties heavy metal esthetic. I think if they are serious about the multiplayer it has to be free to play though.

They will not be rebooting quake. Quake Champions is alright for what it is. Die hard Quake live players hate it. But it's really not that bad.

The old school arena shooter market is tiny. Just look at how dead a game like diabotical already is. Which is really a great attempt at honouring Quake Live while trying to modernise. The problem with the AFPS community is they are so hardcore, its not an easy genre to get into. They'll chew out any attempts to make the games more appealing to new players. It's really not something worth trying at all. Just look on the diabotical reddit for all the shit that game gets. There is no pleasing that market and it's generous to even call it a market.
This is the problem for sure. Arena shooters make 2004 fighting game scene seem huge.
Overwatch was hot for a minute, but a lot of people dropped off because they weren't happy with the balance changes or overall direction of the game. I was one of those people, haha.
I hated the forced classing. I loved being able to just pick another class mid game and adjust to the flow of a round.
TF2 is far from dead, and its traffic is still very much alive and well. I mean, it's usually floating in the top ten highest current population on Steam. Right now it's currently #8 with 80,000 players.
Okay. That tells us where a potential solution is.
Though, I'd admit if id collaborated with Raven and it was a new Heretic or Hexen I'd be fine with that too, lmao.
Be still my heart. That could be cool but I’ll leave it for now.
I've decided this thread shows thats it going to be ultra hard to make anyone happy so prob just don't do it, or it has to be something totally different
Yeah. You gotta pick lovecraft/midievil/starchild, another alien army shoooter, or id-allstars arena FPS
As someone that grew up loving everything id put out, I'm just so happy to see the things I love getting attention again.
We are playing with house money after 2016. It’s not DoomI/II and it’s not Doom3 but it is good enough and feels like an id game. I felt like after Rage and Carmack leaving we’d not get another so I’m just thankful it (and machine games Wolfs) exist.

It was a stupid trend follow. Instead of leaning into what you are like counter strike and TF2 apparently they tried to be a hero shooter. It got them nowhere big and upset the core.

if they tried it today they’d make PUBG with rocket jumps and quad damage. Might be fun. Might suck.
has to be free to play though
Yup.

Now that id Software (IDS) has been bought by the enemy MS, here is my plan.
  1. Scrap PvP multiplayer from all other IDS properties. You don’t have multiplayer to yourself now (it’s not 1997 gaming anymore). Doom, Rage, Wolf going in a million directions = player base diluted to death
  2. Scrap quake champions (revise it if you want to keep the engine). Trying to be another hero shooter was misguided at best
  3. Use that MS $ to buy out your “competition”. What I mean by that is all these indie niche arena FPS titles just split the player base that is not that big. If they don’t want to join, fine (they’ll die). If they do, great (more high quality levels)
  4. F2P. It works for plenty of other titles and you can just sell skins for the characters.
  5. Lean into quake live and Q3A before it. You were the arena shooter. You should just do that better, tighter, with modern graphics that still run at 200FPS on a decent PC rig. Just BE. THE. FPS.
  6. Add modes sparingly. CTF and rocket arena make sense as they are extensions of death match. They’ll also give newbs (and old guys like me) a place to git gud enough. Don’t try to add 7 different modes though. If you don’t focus on the core and growing the player base for a good 3 years before trying to be cute you’ll never build a strong long tail
  7. Win a Ferrari and other shit! Quake was a phenomenon in the 1990s. It was Fortnight, Cod, Halo, before all that. MS wants that back they need to make it so. Leave the developers to the game and use their power to have yearly tournaments of 1v1 and 3v3 with prize money. They need to pay streamers to make it cool
  8. Use Quake as the Heros of The Storm or Smash of IDS. All the character models should be from all of the IDS titles. They should all play the same. They should all be free to use So if you want to frag with doom guy then you play Quake
  9. If you want to do co-op or zombies mode or other stuff maybe let Wolf, Rage, or Doom have that but PvP should be left out of them

All I can think about is what not to do with a proper Quake reboot: no arcady adhd "skateboarding", no bro culture fantasy demi-god protagonist, AND no try hard attempts at giving everything an origin story (why the fuck does Hell in DOOM need one).

Like many here I echo the sentiment that a Quake reboot should fully lean in to the gothic/Lovecraftian 'oldness' of the original. So cog based machinery powered puzzles, vast dark castles and twisting dungeons, grated windows and arcane halls of stone and wood. The atmosphere of Quake is one of the most startling things about it. The developers would really need to focus on that sense of dread and abandonment to make such a reboot stand out from the crowd of futuristic shooters. Forget the Strogg and the Quake sequels. Go back to the original. Just my take.
