Just finished Final Fantasy VII Remake

This is a sequel, not a remake. Everything had transpired already, or is at least being visioned as such. Cloud flat out says he beat Sephiroth, and Sephiroth says he's well aware. Cloud sees visions of events that transpired in the original game and you even see the ending at some point. He gets tears all of a sudden when he thinks of an event with Aerith, but he can't pinpoint why just yet. The ghosts ensure the old scenario will happen again, which is why they stop things that tend to play out differently (like Cloud not joining the second bombing run, they ensure Jessie is benched). Sephiroth's goal, is ofcourse killing the ghosts. As in the original timeline he loses and he knows it. With the ghosts dead the writers have full liberty. I wouldn't rule out they make some drastic changes to the original plot.
I think you got it wrong. Cloud did beat him but that was before the original FFVII events, that's why he's supposed to be dead. That's how the story playa out on the original too.

What do you mean a sequel? Do you mean that there's going to be a sequel? I believe everybody knew that.

No, as in.
The planet has a way that it wants the events to play out. (It wants it to play out as it did in the original)
Aerith/Sephiroth can tap into the lifestream and see at least glimpses of their future.

So this is a game that takes place with key people already knowing how the events of the original went. Making it functionally a sequel.

Finally, after waiting for 7 years I finally finished Final Fantasy VII Remake and all I have to say is it was great. I don't know if anyone who didn't played the original would like it though, the game seems to be fan service, just a mean to tell you an updated story and it does a great job at it. I would say it's an 8 out of 10 with some 9s in between and a couple of 10s moments.

I don't get the hate for the game, those who didn't like it, what were you expecting? What I really loved is that it isn't just a boring copy of the original a la Demon's Souls, but the original reimagined. It still gives you the main point but you'll get it a little different which for me it was the best decision they could've be make because this way we get a new game, lets call it an alternate FFVII.

So for those who already finished the game what did you like or didn't like about it?
The ending is very chaotic. All that with annoying Aerith saying "we can do it" all the time. Sephiroth is not a mystery anymore, also Cloud's brainshit stuff is now so obvious. They even showed Zack... good God.

Not what I expected.

Ah ok. That makes sense. It’s more exiting to as remake part 2 should have new twists since they are no longer following the original 100%.
But to name it 7 remake and has new twists isn’t fitting lol.
The title remake is a double entendre, meaning the protagonists can remake their story.

I honestly despised it. I wanted to love it. I love the original & bought Advent Children. I didn't let the hype get to me.
I found that anything other than combat was simply a chore.

There were definitely negative aspects to the game.

- I didn't like how the whispers were handled. (both graphically and thematically)
- Locking the side-quests to specific chapters was annoying.
- Some of the President Shinra stuff at the end was stupid.
- Some of the Sephiroth stuff at the end was stupid.
- There was a ton of bloat towards the latter part of the game.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time with FF7R. The highs were really high (music, presentation, battle system, etc.), and the game was so much better than some of the other Final Fantasy/Kingdom hearts offerings.

I REALLY liked the game and can't wait to replay it, with the PS5 upgrade.

If people don't like it, then they could just wait for the true remake, in development.

I mostly liked it. Some things I really liked and some things not so much. All told, it was disappointing to me as a long-time fan of FFVII, unfortunately.

I feel that if you know the original, nearly everything is bloated. Which makes sense as there is no other way you can make a 40 hour game out of a prologue that originally lasted about 5 hours, story wise. They have to insert story beats and reveals as its a full featured release.

In some ways this is a plus, since its more immersive and makes more impact. Such as the character building of the Avalanche crew, the visible destruction of Midgar after the first bombing run etc. But its gets out hand when you're sent on goose chases in the sewers and in the lab. And I think the second bombing run is padded out way too much. Even the run up to the boss is same room after same room disabling shit (which is a neat feature, but they could've done this in one hidden room you can optionally break in or something). The whole motorcycle part with that useless dude felt out of place as well. That part went on for way too long while I initially liked the chapter as you were topside, I hated the vehicle gameplay in this good thing you can skip it in hard mode.

Im a huge fan of the original (its my favorite game ever) and Remake is my favorite game of the generation. I can see why some who wanted an exact copy of the original would hate it, but I take it as a SEQUEL (as I believe its meant to be) and thus find it great. I do hate some of the ending stuff they did, but nothing is ever perfect.

The hate for the game is a vocal minority, the game is great, probably the best Final Fantasy game released in the last 14 years.

Lets ignore semantics.

It's a version of the story where characters are literally stated to know the future.

Which makes it so that the story builds off things that "already" happened in the last game. I agree the guy you mentioned is mistaken, but can you see why some people describe it as a sequel? Even if it doesn't literally take place after?

Biggest disappointment of last gen for me.

A 40 hour game with 10-15 hours worth of good content and a silly fan fiction story.

Battle system, visuals, sound - all of that stuff is good. It was just too bloated, it never felt like the game got going at a good pace. It was always something interesting then 3 hours of monotony.

Completely agree. After getting platinum on FF7R, I went back and played the original. I forgot how quickly the game moved through these events.

I don't know if it was Nomura or some executive that pushed the team to stretch the game the way they did but I really hope they get away from that nonsense in chapter 2. I would much rather complete a 10 hour game (without bloat) multiple times than replay a 40+ hour game with the moogle fetch quests and Tifa monkey bar sections we had to endure.

I had a laundry list of complaints, but over all I enjoyed it. The hallways (still my biggest FF complaint), VA is great for video game standards but still cringe and doesn’t feel natural in general (to be fair, no video game has done this well... yet), the battle is too fast (I never even bothered using status ailment items because everything happened so quickly it wasn’t worth the time... and in general there is just too much going on and it stresses me out), the side quests are miserably bad (nothing else to say here, they are serviceable but not good or fun at all, unfortunately), and much, much more.

Honestly if they would have given us a more open world and got rid of all the hallways, I would have been a very happy boy..... but square just does not fucking get it when it comes to that hallway shit 🤦‍♂️. Everyone haaaaates that, yet they continue to do it in nearly every single FF game... smh. That alone is enough for me flip the bird to the whole company and call them “has beens”.

The fact that it is a sequel now, and not a remake, is a big negative for me. Ugh, I could go on and on with my complaints about this game... But there is a lot of good stuff in there too, and I’m looking forward to replaying it soon.

I totally agree with this bit.

the battle is too fast (I never even bothered using status ailment items because everything happened so quickly it wasn’t worth the time... and in general there is just too much going on and it stresses me out),

But it did eventually click for me. It took a very long time. And it definitely felt had very little involvement within a battle until it did click.

Did you ever finish it? Sounds like you did.

I thought it was a cool remake all in all, but couldn't help but feel that the animations and gameplay while running around (outside of battle) felt kind of low budget. It also dragged a bit at the end, understandable when stretching a few hours of original game to a full RPG.

Yes I did finish, and I liked the battle over all, I just wanted to be able to use a little more strategy and maybe have time to actually throw an antidote or echo screen or whatever. But the battles went by in a flash and I felt something was missing from the FF battle formula at that point. It’s still good, but I remember just selling every status ailment item which said to me there is some kind of flaw if they include those items but you never have to use them.

it was still a good game, but I had a lot of criticisms for it.

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
I'm playing through it since it is free on PS Plus right now.

Here are my thoughts.

I never played the original FFVII. I'm not able to compare them so i will try to see the remake as a standalone game.

Overall i feel entertained and want to progress in the storyline to see what weird things are coming up next. About 2/3 into the game.
At the same time the game is filled with cringe moments, awkward situations and an over reliance of melodramatic exposition.
Just FF i guess. I try to not question the hole story to much. But i stoped counting how often i rolled my eyes.

Presentation is also a mixed bag. Some times the game looks so gorgeous especially in terms of lighting.
Yet there are so many muddy and unsharp textures along the way and even on the main path right into your face.
Same for animations. The cutscenes look really good and are so well staged but on the side quests nobody seemed to care a bit for the simplest facial expression.
Particle effects are top notch! I expected nothing less here.

Gameplay is... ok i think. I was on the fence about the real time combat system. It put me off FFXV. I thought turn based battle or bust.
But the more i play it the more i like it. It's something you have to get used to especially after so many iterations of FF games without this.
The rest is... sorry just mediocre. The game is just super liniar and the small, superficial minigames sprinkled out in between don't help that much to lift up the gameplay.
I get that it is a remake of an 24 year old game. But it does not help the game to shine by modern standards.

As i said, i can't compare and maybe i'm not the best one to judge.
Just my impressions.

I will definitely finish the game. But i doubt i will play future expansions of FFVII Remake.

That is a good point don't remember having to use many things to cure status ailments.

Just a lot of phoenix downs, potions and ethers.

But that's wrong too. The guys don't know what's gonna happen in the future. Sure, Cloud has some dreams, but most of them are flashbacks to what already happened. The only one that I can remember being the future was the one with him and tifa. All the other ones were flashbacks or some hallucinations that weren't hallucinations after all

I'm not saying cloud has a perfect map of what's going to happen, but he's affected by future events throughout the game. Ex Crying because of Aerith, Hallucinating the plate falling days before it happens etc. Plus the entire team gets some strong flashbacks of the future at the end.

But ignoring that, Aerith is the exception who knows things like "The plate is going to fall and that Cloud is a mercenary before she even talks to him. She at least has some knowledge. And then there's Sephiroth with at least more knowledge than Aerith who is constantly referencing future events with both his words and his actions. And of course the planet itself which is doing things differently because of its knowledge of the original game.

Point being that the events of the original game are at least slightly affecting that of the remake and making things change even if the changes are slight. And I would say there are some non minor changes as a result. And if characters are ebing affected by events from the past many will see it as a sequel.

While I do agree that the game has some flaws like pacing issues especially towards the end, pretty boring side quests and some minor technical hick ups I have to say this has been one of the best roller coasters I have ever experienced in a game. Yes the nostalgia played a role in it, but why does that have to be a bad thing? Seeing Aerith or Tifa for the first time. Even my first steps into sector 7. I was giggling like a school girl BECAUSE I played the original and I just dont understand why thats a bad thing for some people. Anyway.

This game has a phenomenal emotional pacing, something some of the great games of last year were missing. This game goes from exiting, to curios, to mundane, to action, to chill and relax, to super funny and over the top, to wholesome, to crippling sadness, to remorse, to hope, to ... some pacing issues ... to fuck yeah lets do this, to ... some pacing issues .... again .... to full throttle boss roulette to what the fuck is even happening right now, to .... fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck I gotta wait like 3 years now o_O. Ok lets play hard mode.

Compared to The Last Of Us Part 2, which goes something like this: Everything is shit, there was a time when stuff was slightly less shit, but now everything is shit for like 20 hours. And I get it, thats somewhat the point, but I felt so numb towards the end, that I just didnt care anymore. And again, maybe thats the point, but somehow I think the game would have profited from some better emotional pacing. The "shitty" parts were too long imho.

And as much as I like God of War, Horizon, Ghost, Spiderman and similar games, they kind of do one kind of emotion and thats about it. Maybe there is one or two scenes that spice things up for like 5 minutes but there isnt an entire chapter thats just bonkers and hilarious, just to kick you while your down a few hours later. You need highs to experience the lows.

The sad parts in FF7R work because you are having fun with the characters. Because you go through insane shit, you bind with them. Doesnt matter if there are plot ghosts. Who cares. People are acting like the original had this amazing untouchable story. But its anime as fuck. I'm playing through it right now, trust me. Alien comes to the planet, kills everyone, gets defeated, mad scientist discovers it, literally implants alien cells into an embryo to breed a super human and that super human gets mad as fuck at society and wants to travel to other planets by killing everything on this planet first. You know. Shakespeare.

Its never been the overall story that was so special, it has always been the characters and how they deal with the absurd shit thats being thrown at them and its the characters that ground the story and give it emotional weight. So again, who cares about plot ghosts, they can go as crazy as they please, as long as the characters are being kept intact and I think they managed that above everything else. And people who complain about the writing should really play the OG again. It aint pretty at times. But again its fine, the characters still shine through and thats what is important.

That feeling of being among a bunch of weird crazy ass people that you call your friends and traveling the world defeating whatever is stupid enough to cross your Buster sword. Its the fantasy I have since Pokemon and those PS1 Final Fantasy's satisfied this desire. And after playing FF7R I fell like I have finally found another group of people that are crazy enough to go out with me so save this god damn planet!

So yeah I liked it.

It seems to me Aerith and Sephiroth know everything. They know what will eventually transpire. They can retcon this to the fact Sephiroth taps into the lifestream and Aerith is a Cetra. And the party is kind of held back by the whispers if things are being spoiled early.

The odd thing is, the whispers do seem to want the original outcome. They do change stuff here and there, and they prevent the party from too big reveals too early on. Because in the original timeline the world survived. Sephiroth knows this, which is why the whispers need to go. I also think Sephiroth fucks with the party, letting them believe the original outcome being a failure.

The game uses the original for reference, and tries to steer a different way. Which why I felt this is a sequel of sorts. Not a bonafide sequel, but not a plain remake either.

The most interesting thing is, and I think this is why the narrative is changed in the first place,

since Sephiroth likely knows killing Aerith will eventually lead to his downfall, will he do it again? I think the writers have a good reason for Sephiroth to actually not push through with this. But its an iconic scene, and it needs to be in there. Perhaps they save it for the very end so Aerith isn't gone after part 2 or 3 or whatever how many parts they have planned.

The frustrating bit of FFVII Remake is that it wouldve been so easy to change it from good to great.

The fleshing out of the story was greatly done, like Corneo's place in chapter 9. They should have focussed on fleshing out, and not changed the core story.

So:
- Yes to fleshing out.
- No to whispers
- No weird whisper boss
- No to changing the scene where you escape Shinra prison (this couldve been so great in Remake style! )
- No to Sephiroth changes (way less mysterious, weak for some reason)

If they avoided al these changes, it would have been for the better AND saved them resources they could have spent on improving the core game.

I don't think aerith is close to knowing everything, although I think she knows a lot.

I loved the game a ton. I’m glad it was something different and they kept a quasi-sequel secret and that it doesn’t invalidate the original game.

I have no interest in replaying games I’ve already played with prettier graphics (unless it’s as well done as something like the REmake, and even that adds its own spins)

It was a massive disappointment.

FF7 is easily one of, if not the greatest game ever made. This was a poor imitation. It maybe has the characters but it doesn't have the soul (or the story) of the original.

I loved it, as well. Easily biggest surprise for me since I was hoping it would not be a 1:1 scenario and they'd throw a curveball in and I got exactly that. Best part was the execution of the final act and final chapter since I found that perfect- Kitase, Nojima, and Nomura did a great job. The added scenes along the way and further fleshing out of characters were needed too and I didn't find it bloated.

My main problem was the return to the sewers and almost no Upper Plate content- missed opportunity imo. Sewers killed the flow of the game at that moment, but it quickly picked itself back up at least.

I absolutely loved it.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the way they handled Sephiroth. All of his mystery, enigmatic presence and intimidating menace was flushed down the toilet in favour of a rasping, smirking troll who is buzzing around you almost from the moment the game starts. No mystery, no menace, just constant smugness and bedroom eyes. I appreciate that 23 years of spinoffs and fanfics has made these characters into something more than they were initially, but I feel like his is the only character to be betrayed.

I'm open to the ending, although I'm not interested in different for difference's sake. They've gotta do something good with it, and they'll never top the original's story. What's more, they've already shown how they're willing to pull cheap shockers to flip expectations. But I'm open to it. If they do it right, they'll be able to generate fresh tension and drama which will be thrilling. Old Stamp > Nu-Stamp though.

Can't wait to replay it on PS5.

The Rebuild of Final Fantasy VII shit is the least offensive thing about this game, the game actively dragging and wasting time on the other hand? Whew.

I mean Aerith and Sephiroth winking at the audience is cringe but oh well.

The original is my GOAT and I finally just started this last week. I was in no rush to play it because of it taken place in midgar the whole time. I love midgar in the original but I don’t want a whole game in it. The best part of the OG was leaving midgar.

I’m really early on in the game at the slums. The mission system alone is turning me off big time already. The voice acting is horrible and sick of hearing the same lines over and over when I run by someone. They nailed the look perfectly and it’s a beautiful looking game. But seeing the slums during the day sort of takes me out of it. Obviously I’m super early on and I might love the hell out of it, but for some reason I just want to go play the original again for some reason. PPL are gonna laugh at me complaining about it so early on, but I think I’m just so damn picky nowadays. I don’t have the same patience I used to. Gonna start it back up tonight.

Winking at the players? You the fanbase that already played the original many times over the past 23 years and were demanding a remake since the 6th gen? God forbid you change some story beats to surprise the sweat heads that have been obsessed with your game right? And you call expanding the story and the characters of Jessie and the rest of Avallanche, fleshing out Midgard, the world building of the game and giving you more bang for your buck a waste of time? You people love to whine Thank God you're a minority.

I think the teams explanation for that was plausible. Everyone knows Sephiroth already. There is little point in making him this looming threat. I bet if he didn't appear, the reactions would be y no sephiroth?

The original is a much better game. I do enjoy the combat of remake more since its more challenging (for the first time in FFVII, I actually link materias, use status preventing accessories etc, every weapon keeps its use for a certain build.. hell, last year I begged for loadout switching), faster and looks good. But the original is a complete experience, it has everything and you can travel the world map etc. I loved Midgar in the original, I think Square couldn't introduce this series to the world in a better way. For a lot of gamers, this was the first FF. It was the first FF in Europe for example. Had it started like V or VI, I might've dropped the controller. But you're thrown into the action, a terrorist act right off the bat. Midgar has a motorbike chase, crossdressing, some dumb stealth section, a tight narrative.. it basically had a fuck ton of stuff. And then you realize its just the intro. I bought it after I tried the first 15 minutes, I wasn't into RPG at all. Its become one of my fave games ever.

I was with you until the more bang for your buck thing. What many wanted was one game, not 2 or 3. So at the end of you focus only on the story, it's a 25 to 30 hour game, on par with many other AAA releases.

The frustrating bit of FFVII Remake is that it wouldve been so easy to change it from good to great.

The fleshing out of the story was greatly done, like Corneo's place in chapter 9. They should have focussed on fleshing out, and not changed the core story.
Exactly. Chapter 1 and 9 were basically what I was hoping for all the way through when this thing was announced. That's what makes the game so disappointing for me. When it got things right (like chapter 1 and 9) it was amazing, but then there was the other stuff.

One of my favorite examples of a remake getting it right is the RE1 remake. It fleshed the story out, added things here and there, polished other things, completely redid visuals, sound, FMVs also while updating the gameplay.

People conveniently forget that most of the new story beats were poorly written and awful.

Like changing shinra actually blow up the reactor. Assuming shinra didn’t for a second and avalanches bomb just destroyed the control station like the plan. Shinra could have repaired that shit in hours. But regardless shinra was really behind it because the good guys can’t do anything bad. This is terrible writing.

The dons doorman having a backstory

Jessie’s little pointless side quest.

Running around doing side quests instead of going straight to save aerith

The ghosts

If you’re new to the game or old time fan. Everything from hojos lab one wards. Was awful.
The Characters breaking character and talking complete nonsense,
Especially areith on the highway

The original midgar section which is like 2-4 hours has a way better story than this game .
With all that said the game was fun to play, the battle system the music and the graphics.

The thing is anybody with a brain knows how big FFVII is, hell the expanded side games and media made SE gangbusters even if they were of uneven quality (some would say all of them are trash but that's besides the point) and knowing the cost of modern development and SE in usually high expectations for ROI it was inevitable.

As for the side content i enjoyed it, sure the quality is uneven but it IS content! The hard mode NG+ gives you a whole new experience IMO with it's harder bosses and enemies and total removal of crutches like items and bench rests as it forces to manage your resources.
