Intel fires away at Apple in a war of PC vs Mac

What do you even do with a Mac? I know artsy people think photoshop on them is better. You pay more for the same specs and then there's no games.

most gamers I know tend to use pc or consoles, not laptops. If you’re serious about pc gaming, you should be using a dedicated desktop. Laptops get outdated pretty quickly for that.

in terms of productivity, I.e. doing all your work, they are much better machines.

IT users don’t like them, and I don’t blame them for having that opinion but for pretty much everything else they are superior

Sorry it is not our IT that sucks. It is Macs by their very design. Mail as you stated everyone uses is one of the WORST with Mac. Outlook for Mac is the most stripped down garbage application every created. The PC version of Outlook is far superior in every way. If you think otherwise then I am sorry but you must be mentally handicapped. Let's see what else......oh yeah because users never reboot their Macs every time they change their password the rebind does not work. I have a Macbook Pro and I hate it. The only thing I think it does better than Windows is take screenshots.

You also need adapters for everything, nothing just works. Users have to map drives with either SMB or AFP depending on what they have to do. If you do have an issue good luck finding any useful information online to help because everyone uses Windows. Windows computers in a Windows domain make much more sense, are easier to use and provide so many more options. You have to have intelligent IT to manage a Windows environment so maybe that is why your company does not have Windows?

As I said Macs may be fine for some environments maybe yours but not for ours.

I don't dispute the M1 chip is better than comparable Intel processors. Application compatibility and features are what matter to me. If I don't have any software I use that can run on an M1 then what good is it?

man if you really dislike MacBooks that much, sell it and get a windows computer. I have a friend in IT who did that despite their company using macs

not everyone likes MacBooks and thats ok, but the solution is to get something you like

Some of the people on here and posts like this are saltier than intel’s new ad campaign lol

Well... I've been building all my PCs over the years Intel-Nvidia... but Intel has been sitting on their butt so long, I don't think I will go that route. If I had to upgrade today, it will definitely be AMD-Nvidia.

Also I am a Mac user (at work) for past 20 some years - but I use a PC at home.
However, I've been working remotely - and am thinking about buying a Mac Mini just for work and keep my PC as a gaming rig.
I'm pretty impressed how Apple made ARM chip compete against the big chips, so as long as I don't have to pay for their outrageous prices - I will support it. It's just something I'm used to.. since old Power PC Mac days.

Not just about photoshop - I do a lot of presentations and I find Keynote is much easier to use than Powerpoint - especially when it comes to type layouts and all.

Then again, once I go back to office later this year and start the life of strictly work-life separated life again, I may just forget about it.

Not true, there are IT users that do like them. It depends, as IT is a big branche with different fields.

How are they better for productivity? Everything is made for x86-64. I've never seen a single office or business using osX.

If you want a Mac it won't matter which processor you prefer once Apple stops making intel macs. If you're a gamer Mac probably isn't where you want to be, anyway.

I have an M1 MacBook Pro and its fine for most of the development I do. It is useless for Android development right now since all of the useful Android emulators are written for X64 and Rosetta doesn't support them.

It’s cheaper for large corporations to use windows and dell or Lenovo sure

But for the individual user or small teams, they are significantly better

MacOS still does multiple virtual desktops Better than windows, they still do multitasking better, and the trackpad + shortcuts are so much better than the best windows pcs that it is not even close to how a Mac facilitates a productive workflow

very seamless on macOS, still cumbersome and gets in the way more than it helps on comparable windows pcs (XPS, razer blade, etc)

my windows lineup includes razerblade stealth 2019 w mx150, XPS 13 2020, XPS 13 2 in 1 2018

Mac lineup is a late 2013 Pro and an M1Air

it’s hard to explain if you haven’t been publishing research papers, or doing medical work, as that is a niche, but I consistently find the MacBook experience in a class of its own. Superior in every regard for my line of work as well as more secure.

the fact my late 2013 pro can be sold used for 1/3 of what I paid going on 8 years later is a testament to the value as well

there is no comparison in build quality either.

I think the m1 air is the best value laptop on the market and unless one absolutely needs windows, you won’t find a better computer. Fan noise (lack thereof), entire UX, quality of components, speakers, display in 16:10, and battery life...are just second to none

I totally get why intel is creating this ad campaign and getting their advertising angle out there

Debug on device, why run on emulator at all?

Oh, but it is.

You see, there's a thing in the mobile space called BATTERY LIFE, which is far more important than performance (if you want raw performance, you obviously use a desktop PC), and in that regard, the Apple M1 SoC IS a leap forward: it proves you can have an "average desktop" performance with the autonomy (battery life) of a tablet.

Sure, things won't change much on the desktop space, but on laptops...oh boy... Apple really did a number.
M1 is slower than both intel and AMD laptop cpus, and battery life claims from apple were greatly exaggerated.

I actually do have experience with research papers, but only since windows 7. Windows 10 seems better in every way.

Why would you use a track pad for productivity?

How are the virtual desktops better?

Resale is irrelevant when you pay twice as much for the same hardware.

It’s strange that Intel are comparing things that have nothing at all to do with the Intel CPU in those laptops. Putting an AMD chip in those laptops would give you more performance at less power usage. If I was in the market for a new laptop ”PC” then I would skip Intel and go for AMD.

If you are in the market for a new Mac then going with the M1 is your best choice unless you want a larger screen than 13”, then wait until the M1X/M2 releases as the M1 is only available on the low end Air/13” Pro.

If you want to see how Intel fares vs. the M1 then you only need to look at the similar 13” Macbook Pro models from 2020.
The early 2020 high end 13” Macbook Pro could use up to a 10th gen. i7-1068NG7 (quad core) and the late 2020 low end 13” Macbook Pro which uses the Apple M1 chip.

https://barefeats.com/m1-macbook-pro-versus-intel-version.html

The M1 destroys the Intel version in every test and the M1 model costs less as well.

M1 Emulates x86 code with the efficiency of an i7 or i9 with a fraction of the power usage. Not to mention that you literally check a box in SDEs for it to work on arm so it’s not like compatibility is a problem.

Secondly, your IT department does suck because it sounds EXACTLY like you guys have no experience with a Unix environment. The capability of MacOS being that it was built upon FreeBSD foundation (which is better than Windows) let’s me interact with our servers much deeper than Windows as all I have to do is launch terminal, remote in, run commands and get the outputs I need. The ignorance around Windows being superior is a joke, it just is. It’s just what they’re used too and hate having to learn anything.

Not to mention the QoL in the software department where so many things on Windows that require a piece of software are just built in and intuitive and right at your fingertips on MacOS which increases your productivity by making task take less time overall.
I can see you have almost zero knowledge of Windows.
I must have hit a nerve for all the Mac lovers here lol.

I have both but don’t have much choice but to use the Mac. I just prefer Windows.

Windows is required for the government side so I have to have multiple systems.

I can’t sell a corporate laptop either or I would. If I could get a comparable Windows laptop instead of the Mac I would do gust too but they only offer crappy Dells. I deal with the Mac over that.

Sorry, I forgot I worked at a small business 5-6 years ago that originally had really cheap Dell PCs that the owner screwed up doing God knows what with quickbooks, blamed windows then bought Macs. He was all apple "iT jUsT wOrKs", but that's because having the ability to change things or a second mouse button was too much for him. Funny enough I had one of those cheap Intels and mine never got screwed up... Fortunately I got to stay on PC while I worked there.

I should say, I haven't seen any serious businesses running anything other than Windows PCs. Small shops where people have funny hair colors not withstanding.
XP was great. I've never had that issue with it back in the day.

Windows 10 boots for me in 5 seconds.

People either love MacBooks or hate them

I’m in the “can’t go back to windows” camp

everything just works, battery life is better, resale value is better, fan noise is better, problems are dealt with easier, And the trackpad is bar none the best in a laptop going on over a decade

their butterfly notebooks sucked and I’m happy they’re rumoured to be getting rid of the Touch Bar gimmick

they’re not perfect but for me the m1 MacBook Air is the best value laptop and it ain’t even close

Apple is a big customer for intel to lose. Of course they will be salty.
I know eventually Apple will have ARM CPUs in everything, but aren't they still using Intel in a lot of their products?

A computer is a machine that allows you to use a set of different tools, and the tools you're provided for your job depend entirely on what job you are performing!

Not even considering all the different fields of expertise a "serious company" can have, such as marketing, design, security, finance, logistics, software development, or several creative expertise, saying no serious business does use OS X is absolutely a cap.

Also, a business being small or medium-sized doesn’t mean it’s not a serious business. Like, not even remotely.

Instead of doing this pity war Intel should be more focused on PC where AMD is killing the market. With their CPUs. In the long run, companies that can afford it would drop Intel and make their own CPUs if they keep this shit up.

I‘m actually thinking of switching to Apple once the M1X hits the market, nothing against Intel but just want to try something new.
I have a MacBook Pro with Intel (unfortunately because of my school) and it’s amazingly good and super fast. But yes I would wait on the MX1.

LOL I guess my entire job administering Windows systems for the federal government means I don’t know shit I guess.
Considering how well the federal government is ran you said it yourself you don’t know shit.

Is working for the federal government mean you are somehow some genius? It means nothing. The State Department had lots of Exchange 2010 servers in production two years ago and that is not impressive. The feds are always way behind in technology. So shut your Mac loving ass up and go manage your server 2003 environment for the feds.

I switched to the Apple ecosystem a few years ago and I love it. I now have an iMac, iPhone, an iPad Pro and a bunch of accessories for all of them and I find it better than Windows for my productivity purposes. The iPad Pro in particular is far ahead of the competition and nothing compares to it in its product segment. I'm looking forward to seeing the next generation of iMac running on Apple chips.

This is so disingenuous. Notice they never mention efficiency. The M1 is using a much lower wattage to perform these tasks.

Man, windows is just nagware, id you don't use a Microsoft account it bugs you for it every time you update, updates are forced, so on and so forth.

I just don't think it's appropriate for work anymore, it's just too much distractions.
Kinda reminds me the ads from Sega vs Nitendo back in the megadrive days. But less funny.

The best thing on the PC side is that you are not stuck with Intel.. but I'm fairly sure they will not put that in their next round of ads.

Let them eat cake!

Frankly, intel did nothing to improve their chips for a long long time so of course their chips are slow and energy demanding, Apple just wants to trap people even more into their ecosystem! Not even Linux runs on the M1 chip.

Anyway the bottom line is big companies seize control and will feel threaten when another company does what they do even better!

I have a windows desktop and various Macbooks and iOS devices. I love them both for different things. I will say that I have an enormous amount of intrigue with Apples M1 over 11th gen Intel CPU's. Battery life and performance is incredible on my M1 Air. Only have specs with the Intel chips, but I haven't been all that impressed with them so far. Maybe real world performance will tell a different story.
