Tomb Raider - Anniversary Presentation

They already remade the first game once.

Yes I know, remake was the wrong word, I want Spyro/Crash style remakes of them.

I never actually played the OG TR1, I started with TR2 back in the day and then went from there, played Anniversary at the time. I was going to do a full run of TR1-4 soon. Will need to investigate the best way to play on modern machines though. I got OpenLara but it only supports TR1 afaics.

Wise move by Square we’ll find out sales numbers because Tomb Raider has become a challenger to Uncharted something the old Tomb Raider games never were all people want to talk about is tomb Raider ps1 if I’m a gamer today I appreciate this anniversary edition and enjoy the normal controls, enjoy the hell out of it.

These games are really good folks. If you don't have them and like these kind of games, grab them.

You could probably get them cheaper out of the bundle though. The first is like 3 or 4 bucks on psn right now. The other two drop fairly often too.

No they didn't remade it. They re-imagined it. Big difference.

Um, no. Crystal Dynamics remade it.

I don't understand why they had to announce a trilogy re-release of... 3 games that already came out this gen & are also so cheap you could find them easily on any console's storefront & buy them all for the price of a season pass in any other game.

The easiest way to play on a modern system is probably just to use a PS1 emulator (or DC for 4 )

Great series, great games, awful presentation and lazy anniversary present.

Lemme play all of them from the beginning on all consoles that can handle them.

RE did the same shit. Lemme play the PS1 versions again for fuck's sake!

Because of a company called Square Enix, you may have heard of them, if not, then let me put it this way, they're shit, and they want money

All the money. Oh and data. They do love having their games online somehow, no matter what. Doesnt matter if it's single player, fuck YOU, auto log in.

Tomb Raider Legend trilogy was also released on the same consoles as those games. With the bonus that you finally could play TR: Legend on a non BC PS3.

But I would actually prefer a remaster of that trilogy lol.

Didnt really like the “first” two weirdly enough

If you say that you either never played the original or you have some pretty bad memory.
Resident Evil Remake changed more than anniversary. They're so close that you can do play by play comparisons between them. Anniversary makes some QOL and changes the environments a little to better take advantage of the mechanics from Legend, but it's not even remotely enough to constitute being called a reimagining. The games industry in general tends to grossly misuse the terms "remaster", "remake" and "reimagine" and seems to use them interchangeably. They have pretty strict definitions and unless you're going to try to convince me that Anniversary is Tomb Raider reimagined as a futuristic derelict space station adventuring game it just doesn't reach that bar.

Remaster=A direct port of an older game just with better resolution and framerate (and the inclusion of trophies/achievements).Examples:Shadow of the Colossus/Ico remasters etc

Remake= A 1:1 remake of the original but with completely new graphics that plays exactly as the original.Examples:Shadow of the Colossus remake,Spyro the Dragon trilogy, etc

Re-imagining= A remake of the original with completely new graphics but the developers also take liberties to change the story as much as they want as well as the gameplay and levels. Examples: Tomb Raider Anniversary, Resident Evil Remake ,Final Fantasy VII Remake

In the later category both RE as well as FFVII call themselves "Remakes" but anyone who has played both the originals as well as the "remakes" know that they are actually re-imaginings since they have changed the story, gameplay. Resident Evil Remake feels much more true to the original than the othe other two examples but still has significant changes to be allowed to be called Remake.

Tomb Raider Anniversary completely changed the story, controls and combat from the original as well as completely changing the level designs or completely removed some of the levels. Not to mention the addition of white ledges,QTEs and other things.
I can get even more specific if you want to show you how anniversary is more of a re-imagining (and a really bad one at that IMO) than a faithful remake.

Even Crystal Dynamics called it re-imagining in their commentary mode in the collector's edition of Anniversary.

A remake does not have to be precisely 1:1, some liberties can be taken, as long as the source material is adhered to relatively closely. Changing a few bits here or there does not in any way constitute "reimagining" something. A reimagining is something more in the vein of this, Romeo and Juliet reimagined as a modern day romantic crime drama set in what's clearly supposed to be discount LA.

Fantastic bundle. Loved the reboot games. I bought all at launch and completed each 100%.

Is this all in one launcher for 3 or separate download?

The video was like "LARA IS SO POPULAR BECAUSE OF HER GAMES SO HERE'S A FEW TOMB RAIDER BRANDED NAPKINS AND COOKBOOKS". Just what the fans wanted.
Such a tone deaf company. They should sell the Tomb Raider property to a company that doesn’t despise its customers.

Neither of those games changed just "a few bits here and there" though. Especially Tomb Raider Anniversary (and FFVII Remake).

They both completely changed the story, combat, controls, level designs as well as other things.
I honestly find it crazy that you're still trying to argue about that. Like i said either you never played the original TR or you don't remember anything about it (which i guess it's totally understandable if you only played it once back when it came out).

Want: original ps1 games in HD released as a collection for current consoles

Got: Tomb Raider Cookbook
Yup this Anniversary is soo poorly planned so far,its embarassing.

Its hilarious how the CM on twitter is defending this shit. The typical pr fluff that the team is working hard blabla...meanwhile fans got open lara running on a freaking OG xbox.

This ports/remasters of the CoreDesign games are long overdue. Nobody was asking for shitty Fortnite skins or a freaking cook book.

25th Anniversary my ass

Then they must have a pretty limited imagination, they seemed to have "re-imagined" it as the exact same game, only now it looks better. It's pretty much 1:1.

Shocked Confused GIF by Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

It used the same basic story and featured reimagined versions of the most memorable set pieces, but the gameplay loop was definitely not 1:1 (not nearly enough switches). I really liked Anniversary, often an unpopular opinion.

A straight remake like Crash would be interesting with the original set, you'd have the horrible controls still, but at least the visuals wouldn't be nausea inducing.

I just want my big-cube-based environments back :lollipop_crying: I don't need manual grabbing anymore since that wasn't timing based but I wish you had to take more care with your jumps in modern Tomb Raider games, I don't really like the combat of the modern ones and the exploration/tombs/puzzles weren't the best in TR2013 and Rise (Have Shadow sitting on PS5, havent started yet so maybe that solves the exploration at least) so I'm left with the climbing which is basically all automatic and the animation system just fudges jumps for you when you press too early so I found that a bit rote.

In Uncharted, being locked to the wall and having no challenge in the climbing I don't mind because I view that more as a spectacle rather than challenging gameplay or a way to have dialogue play out that isn't just always forced walking. In Tomb Raider I want to be feeling like its a puzzle to work out how to climb up something and require more precise timing than "generally hit jump and generally push the stick towards the wall".

I do realise this is a hard nut to crack and they want to keep it fast paced, but thats not really what I liked about old TR titles, it was about puzzles and just figuring it out instead of being hand held by having obvious markings for the walls. I wouldn't want nu-Raider to NOT have the markings because its too busy an enviroment and would make it too confusing. They need to simplify the environments to the point of favouring gameplay challenge, DIY-puzzles over cinematic spectacle. They should play the bonus levels from Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Odyssey, the ones with the giant coloured cubes and such, those are what you get when you focus on gameplay over/before environmental design/graphics.

TL;DR - They copied Uncharted too much, but without the technical expertise of ND so its subpar in that regard. Get back to the original design, find a better balance between character responsiveness, timing required and puzzle challenge.
