In the ultimate quest to protect the fragile people from verbal abuse, Intel has just announced that its Bleep software will be available later this year.

Bleep is designed to filter voice chat. Based on the power of AI through Deep Learning, poor Bleep has spent hours listening to sexist and racist slurs so he can keep them from reaching your ears.
As you can see from the overview video below, it's pretty damn good. Indeed, you can choose to block racist insults but keep the sexual ones. Or vice versa !
The filtration level is also customizable. You can decide to keep some racist slurs or specifically block the "N-word".

Very useful if you are racist only against Asians but not against blacks. Example depending on the filter level:
"Fuck your mother in the kitchen! becomes fuck your mother in the [beep]! (sexist filter)"
"Fuck your mother in the kitchen! becomes [beep] your mother in the kitchen! (sex filter)"

Is it just a word filter? Or is there contextual AI going on as well? Kitchen being defined as sexist is weird, but is it because there's a female connotation in there as well? I have not got time to watch 43min video atm. Reminds me of the old filter lists on spam appliances. Or the demo we got from an AI company that would fiter out all porn image spam. Turns out it just did a pixel colour comparison. As a result, all mammograms and medical photography also got filtered. People were upset that day.

Well I would tell you that if anyone I was at school with said some things to me like people say online, I would have had a lot more fights and a lot less friends. I remember being in middle school playing basketball, and some guy older than me talked about my mother. I just walked away from the game and never talked to the guy again. He apologized but I wasn't going to associate with people like that. Online people tend to be more brazen because there is no visible victim and perceived anonymity. With that people tend to think they can get away with anything. Anonymity allows people to believe their behavior is without consequence and without a real victim.

Also, you can just spout out random noises, people will get that they are being insulted.

I haven't watched the video but something tells me it's not an optional thing for individuals. Because if you had such an option, then the responsibility of protecting yourself is on you. Which means snowflakes and narcissists won't have a case anymore to be triggered on twitter since everyone will just say "it's your fault for not using the application".

Honestly as tired as I am of "tough" children and man-babies, I'd rather just turn it off and not have to hear their verbal temper tantrums. I watched a buddy of mine play Rainbow 6 Siege not long ago, and Jesus Christ, the amount of whining, bitching, etc. was SURREAL. TBF, if little bastards weren't so inclined to use certain language when they literally don't have to use it, then these companies probably wouldn't need to address the elephant in the room and do this type of stuff. As gamers we kinda gotta take some responsibility in this being a "thing"...

Like, if you lose in a game and the first thing out of your mouth is a racial slur, then you probably have personal issues because I can play that exact same game, probably lose even worst, and not need to resort to that kind of language. It's not a "gamer" thing, not with the way I've seen a lot of people use it. That said, context does matter; a group of people saying "kike" left and right probably don't mean it in any genuine way (as in endearing; they probably definitely mean it as a way to heavily insult) towards one another, but a couple of buddies who might use "nigga" as a term of friendly endearment very likely aren't using it maliciously (never mind if they wanted to really be malicious they'd say the "er" variant, like Pewdiepie did. You can't tell me he wasn't heated when he said it :/)

I think it's a bit overkill for something like curse words though...granted folks can abuse those as well. Kids definitely shouldn't be using that kind of language but then again they shouldn't be playing games like GTA5 or COD yet they always find a way. Potentially sexist language? That's a slippery slope. "Bitch" is a pretty neutral term these days, but if it's language specifically being used in a context to degrade women then that's an issue. Same probably goes for most potentially homophobic language, though I think again context matters a lot.

The big issue with this type of software is that it never takes context into consideration. By blanket-filtering out words or even letting users filter words out without applying conditions for context, they make the mistake of assuming the worst out of the whole gaming community, by assuming the worst contextual use of these words. Sadly there are gamers who use these words in the worst of ways and they give the gaming community a bad look, but is this really the right way to go about dealing with that?

The people whom like to abuse anonymity on the internet to be vile/racist/sexist need to maybe be aware that the people are slowly getting more used to the idea having social networks that are subject to stricter 'KYC-like' regulation. I don't think it's a good thing but I can slowly see one of the major western democracies enforcing something like that haphazardly. There might be the possibility of other social networks but unsure about those taking off honestly.

Exactly; those of us who use our freedom of speech responsibly are paying the price for those who abuse it to be asshats. And at least in gaming it's frustrating when some people who clearly don't want this type of corporate-driven censorship, never really touch on the fact that, yes, there are a slice of gamers who are just straight-up bigots abusing freedom of speech online to spew hate speech, punishing the rest of us by giving ammunition for these corporations to enforce tighter and tighter restrictions on online speech.

This is a problem because as much as I dislike people who have a propensity of abusing hateful language, I also dislike the idea of corporations using that as an excuse to censor out pretty much anything that's not hateful/bigoted/discriminatory but might express different non-mainstream ideas or opinions. And for sure, false positives will increase in these situations, too.

But it all kind of starts with us as a gaming community trying to ignore the bad apples in the room, pretending they don't exist and not doing some better acknowledgement and handling of that type of stuff of our own volition. If we can't manage our language and refrain from spewing discriminatory language, corporations will do it for us, especially considering how much money is in gaming these days.
