After KOTM being the worst thing I had watched since Suicide Squad or theatrical JL

Human scenes in a Godzilla movie is like "acting" in porn. You skip over it all for the action.
In Shin Godzilla, the human bits aren't nearly as bad, so a standard has to be set at some level. Even Godzilla 14 had glimpses of compelling human drama. KOTM is embarrassed itself with the human characters.

  • Lame fight between Kong and Godzilla

Only redeeming thing was MechaGodzilla.

After KOTM being the worst thing I had watched since Suicide Squad or theatrical JL, despite the bombastic reviews it received (from a certain portion of audience), I'm very skeptical of this film.

I also hate KOTM. This one is... tolerable. It's short, it has two decent action scenes, neon Hong Kong looks cool and MechaGodzilla is fun.
It's like a shitty mix of BvS and Pacific Rim. It even has Junkie XL doing a BWAAAAM score on autpilot.
I'm fine with this series ending. There's a huge quality gap between 2014/Skull Island and these new ones.

You won't like Godzilla Vs Kong then, in fact, you won't like the majority of Godzilla movies.
Not necessarily.

Again, Shin Godzilla and 2014 are two recent ones I love.
And when you go back to the older, occasionally cheesy films, they are often playing a different ball game.

I don't think KOTM has to be the measuring stick for whether or not someone will enjoy other Godzilla films. Far from it, really.

I thought GvZ was the best of the three new Godzilla movies. 2017 is just mediocre aside from Bryan Cranston, while KotM had amazing action sequences but is severely hampered by an absolute god-awful story with terrible characters. GvZ, on the other hand, felt nicely balanced with tolerable characterization (aside from the return of Millie Bobbie Brown - I'm sorry but she's a bad actress) and awesome action scenes as well. Also, I didn't keep up with trailers/marketing so I had no idea about the Journey to the Center of the Earth aspect, so I really enjoyed that too. So yeah: best of the trilogy by far.

It really is strange how little effort has been put into the stories of this Monsterverse. You think the studio would go either one of two routes. Make these movies as big, dumb, and cartoony as possible with easy to follow storylines with no-name actors. Or get a few credible actors, spend the time building a universe that's interesting, and plot out a decent 3-4 movie story arc. But they chose to make it big, dumb, unfun, painfully generic with actors who are completely wasted. Yeah the action is awesome, but it fucking should be. It's Godzilla and King Kong!

Yes. And there all types of tone when it comes to Godzilla movie. You don't have to tolerate the horrible writing and acting in KOTM to appreciate other films in the franchise, even if they can be goofy in their own ways.
That said, there is nothing in the original 1954 Godzilla film that makes me roll my eyes like the human bits in KOTM.

I stand by the fact that you can think KoTM is a poor film and enjoy many other movies in the franchise.

What was your point?

Watched the first ~40% of this then fast-forwarded to the monster action scenes. Don't really have much positive to say. The human characters were mostly boring and uninteresting, and they took up way more of the movie than I expected. The monster fighting was underwhelming, the fights were short and nowhere close to the spectacle I thought we would get.

Imagine making a monster movie with a setting that allows 0G and upside down fights and you just make them smash buildings again, this time with neon lights,

Why are you comparing the 1954 Godzilla to KOTM? That is just ridiculous man. You stated that you liked the more serious and dark tone of the newer movies. This is why I pointed out you will probably not like most G films because most of them are pretty ridiculous and have bad acting, with dumb plots (especially the SHOWA era where focus turned on children)

I don't understand your hate of KOTM because it was a love letter to the entire franchise of Godzilla. There are only a hand full of Godzilla films that meet your criteria and they are
Godzilla: 1984
Godzilla Vs. Destroya
Godzilla: Giant Monsters All-out Attack (sort of)
Godzilla Vs. Biollante

This list is excluding the 1954 masterpiece and Shin Godzilla.

Loved it! Yeah I could do without the human portion of the movie. Maybe we can have a 4 hour Synder cut with more fighting and less human interactions!

My inner child was not disappointed! That was the best Kaiju fight in quite awhile!

I will have forgotten this movie by tomorrow, it was decent, I don't think anyone can make anything better with fucking King Kong vs Godzilla. Good GCI, serviceable characters, reminded me of older popcorn movies that at least made a small effort to setup the world and characters which is good. Still, I don't think I care anymore about CGIfests, it's like I'm watching an impressive benchmark, sure it's beautiful but do I really care about it? When I watch these movies I just feel nothing anymore.

I'm comparing the two because you asked "have you ever even seen the older movies?" when I critiqued KoTM. Well, Godzilla 1954 is the oldest, so I'm telling you how I feel about it in regard to KoTM. Makes sense, right?

No offense, but you're not fit to make a list of Godzilla films that meet my criteria, based on the fact that I disliked the goofy writing and acting in the human segments of KoTM. There are a variety of Godzilla films and they aren't all quite the same.
Plus, you forgot 2014, so the list continues to grow.

It seems like you want to defend KoTM to the point that if I critique it, you question how I could like any Godzilla films at all, besides a very select few of your own choosing.
KoTM and it's horrible writing isn't ambassador for all Godzilla films.
But, I will give it another chance this week since I impulse bought it upon release expecting to like it.

Finally watched it, as a huge Godzilla fan I really enjoyed it. For me it’s easily the second best in the quadrilogy (just behind Godzilla 2014) but definitely before KotM and Skull Island.

the human elements didn’t feel as dragged down as KotM and the action was a lot more consistent and enjoyable compared to rest of the series.
(Godzilla 2014 was the better movie mainly for it being a more grounded film, like “what if Godzilla suddenly appeared in today’s world?” Whereas this is more of a balls to the wall popcorn monster mash.)

also kudos, I expected the big bad to be shoe-horned in but they actually made it feel pretty seamless with the story.

You watched ONE older movie then proceed to tell me that that I am wrong? Bro, I have watched every single Godzilla movie there is and I personally own 95% of them which is over 30 movies. You are right about Godzilla taking many different forms and roles within his life but most still have bad to mediocre writing, with dumb plots. Quite a hand full involves alien invasions controlling the monsters to fight.

I gave you a recommendation from my extensive knowledge of Godzilla filmography to suggest movies you would enjoy the most so you can avoid the super goofy-ass shit (trust me, there are plenty of Godzilla films that meet this criterion).

This discussion had nothing to do with the quality of KOTM. I am not trying to convince you otherwise. Get off your high horse and take my comment as a humble suggestion.

That was the okay-est movie in a long time. First 40 minutes were an absolute drag to get through, but then the pacing picks up and things get more interesting. It's definately a Kong movie though, Godzilla is a side character.

Said a million times but the human element was okay at best thanks to the little girl. Literally the only thing Skarsgard does is look up with a panicked face. Millie bob Brown's entire plot is just ridiculous. And why was Kyle Chandler even in this movie, he has about two minutes of screentime. I guess they were contractually obligated to bring him and Millie back or something. Also, random Lance Reddick for literally 10 seconds out of nowhere. I dunno, it's just a weird movie in the sense that I'm not sure if it's deliberately campy.

The fights were nice, so thankfully that didn't disappint at all.

Weird flex
What can I say? I grew up with Godzilla as a kid and collected the movies. They sparked my interest in filmmaking. Plus, I was trying to explain to him I have a lot of knowledge of the franchise so that he can trust my opinion for the recommendations I gave him.

No, I didn't see one older movie. I've seen multiple.
The reason I chose 1954, is because you are comparing KoTM to the originals in an attempt to defend it, and 1954 is the original. And it's nothing like KoTM so you are moving the goal posts to other Godzilla movies that do fit your description.
But you already know this and now I'm giving more exposition than the humans in KoTM.

Nah, I got like no merchandise. Some people go really crazy with that shit. Too much unnecessary spending imo when I still have the main attraction. The movies. James Rolfe (Aka Angry Video Game Nerd) now THAT guy has a serious monster collection.

Felt like half of a great film spliced with half of a mediocre film.

Didn't see the point in half the human cast, or the journey to hollow-earth. But thought they pulled mecha-godzilla off very well considering how stupid a character that is, he fucking bodied godzilla, owch!.

Having two comedy characters together was odd, the chemistry didn't work with that trio at all.

Nah, you picked the most extreme example. This is called a strawman. You can keep shitting on KOTM though and assuming my intentions, no skin off of my bones. Hate to break it to you, but the majority of Godzilla movies are ridiculous, and the original Kong Vs. Godzilla is one of the most cornball cheesy films I have ever seen. It may come as a surprise to you that I think Shin Godzilla and the 1954 original are in my top 5. The Hesise series brought Godzilla back to a serious villain, but they quickly diluted it in the latter half until Godzilla Vs. Destroya.

What other older Godzilla movies did you enjoy?

Speechless.

It seems like your main intention is to drive home how much of a Godzilla fan you are. You just keep flexing random Godzilla fun-facts and how many of the movies you've seen as if it makes you right.

Very meh. Definitely more of a Kong movie for sure, which hurt my interest in this. Hollow earth shit was dumb as hell. A lot of human cast was pretty bad and pointless and yes, that can be used as an actual critique considering it took up the majority of the film. I didn't like the reveal of what actually Mechagodzilla is, considering there's a mechanized version of that character. Sucks that there wasn't more than one big bad for both Godzilla/Kong to fight. A lot of getting the monsters together to fight and how they end felt nonsensical and it was watching like a boxing match.

Positives CGI looked pretty good. Mechagodzilla look great. If you love Kong you'll like this.

Yea, you haven't watched anything from the original series other than the 1954 classic. If you did, you would realize how ridiculous this claim is. Godzilla gradually evolved into a dumb popcorn flick focusing on a child audience compared to the serious foreboding analogy to the atomic bombs in 1954.

It is quite hilarious to me that all I was doing was trying to suggest Godzilla movies that you would enjoy so you can avoid the goofy-stuff but you keep wanting to talk about me personally. Peace and I hope you enjoy my recommendations.

All of what I said has been shown in the trailers. All of it.

1) I honestly have no clue what you're taking about and I watched the trailer
2) again this isn't shown in the trailer but with your post basically spoils that he more than likely gets his ass kicked
3) trailer doesn't show the whole fight, you spoil that the fight is lame setting expectations for those who haven't watched.
4) mechagodzilla was hinted in the trailer but again I watched the trailer and dipped out so it would've been a surprise to people like me, but now that you've confirmed it, it's now spoiled.

Yes, I would like to say this too. If I came off snobby, it was not my intention. I want people to check out Godzilla which is why I suggested some movies that might be more of his taste. The American version was actually the first Godzilla movie I watched lol.

I've only seen about 3 or 4 of the Toho films and wish I could watch more. There is no where to stream it in Australia though and I'm not sure if I want to pay for the Criterion set. It's a beautiful looking set but if I don't like 80% of the movies it won't be worth it.
I can't remember which movies I have seen as it was over 25 years ago on one of our local TV channels but I enjoyed them. Filled with boring human characters but the monster action was stupid fun.

Well, to be honest with you, I already said a few times that I've seen more than just the original.
My fav is Shin, but I have a soft spot for Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla.
I used 1954 as a reference because "Halo" was bringing up how similar KoTM is to the "older movies" and 1954 is the original, and a totally apt comparison when trying to make a point about the roots of the franchise.

Thanks for looking out though. Unless this was some type of weird "I know all the Godzilla movies hehe" post. Probably not though.

I'm also a big fan of the comics. Anyone read those? Really dig "Godzilla in Hell".

My dude, the Bluray movies are pretty darn cheap.

Just an example:

This is actually THE BEST time to get into classic Godzilla as many films were held up due to copyright issues. If you want more suggestions and tips, you can PM me

Guys, watched the film. I think the critics hit the nail directly on the head by giving the following consensus: " The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its visual effects and action sequences, but with criticism towards the writing of the human characters." You know, Kaiju fans who wanna see Godzilla and Kong slugging it out, and Kaiju brawls in general, they will rejoice after this film.

I felt like Legendary and Warner Bros executives told director Adam Wingard to make/compress his film (to) under 2 hours. Especially after the critical and commercial flop of Godzilla King of the Monsters, since Godzilla Vs Kong's filming wrapped up in April 2019.
Overall, it feels like it got shrunken down somehow. There could have more stuff going on, more fleshing out of team Kong. Team Kong has soul, there's soul in there. It feels rough-hewn and rough around the edges at times, but it's a nice team. Team Godzilla, on the other end of the spectrum, offers some gags and laughs at times, for what it's worth. The rest of the characters are just "fillers".
And last but not least, there's the issue of Zhang Ziyi and Jessica Henwick (her assistance) who got axed completely. Who knows what kind of part did Zhang's arc play in the build-up of the story.

"Principal photography on Godzilla vs. Kong began on November 12, 2018 in Hawaii, under the title Apex. The production wrapped in Hawaii on December 20 and resumed at Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, Australia, in the third week of January 2019. Outdoor shoots took place at various Gold Coast locations, wrapping in early April. Several days of reshoots were conducted afterwards."

A couple Godzilla vs. Kong cast members have told me that they did not have to go back for additional photography. Did you have to go back, or are you in the clear?

Eiza Gonzales: Yeah, everything’s been done. These movies take a long time because there’s a lot of CGI in them. But, yeah, we’ve done everything, and they’re just going through and creating these incredible characters. I’m just really excited to see it because it’s these two worlds colliding. The fan base for Godzilla vs. Kong is incredible. When I say I’m in the movie, people are like, “Oh my God.” Seeing that fanaticism and seeing how excited they are to see this movie makes me really excited; I think they’re going to be really happy. [Director] Adam Wingard is so talented. Both stories are going parallel, as you’ll see, without giving anything away. It’s a large cast as well, and it was really fun to be part of it. There’s so much going on, but the heart of it is two young girls as well, which is such a positive message for society nowadays. It’s just incredible.

We did a few days [of additional photography], but it wasn’t really crazy. Like every other film, we did a couple days, and that was kind of it. When you do these big, massive films, there’s always moments that you didn’t see and want to fill in. It was really basic stuff. Nothing too crucial or crazy.

"Zhang Ziyi and Jessica Henwick were cast but did not appear in the final cut of the film, with Ziyi intended to be reprising her role since Godzilla: King of the Monsters. "

With all the hype about the kaiju fight scenes, the fight scene in Hong Kong felt and looked strangely.....fake? I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it felt like those buildings should have splintered into a billion pieces when the monsters smashed onto them, instead they seemed like huge indestructible pillars. It just looked....weird. It's almost as if they were trying to save money on CG and can't afford to render all that destruction. But if you're not going to go all-out orgasmic CG destruction, why bother setting up a huge fight in the middle of Hong Kong?

Maybe I'm crazy here but I think I actually liked KOTM more than this one. This one was just mainly a Kong movie with Godzilla thrown in, while KOTM was a real Godzilla movie(plus it had Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah).

My God this movie is terrible. Literally SyFy original quality. In fact I'd say many SyFy originals are better. At least they have the excuse of low budgets. If you're going to have the human elements be THAT awful then just have an hour and a half of nothing but monsters fighting. Would have been way better. Worst movie I've seen in a long time.
