Seems like the next Monster Hunter game will be World 2 on PS5/Xbox/PC. Going Switch only hurted sales.

Btw PS5 is over 60k! Supply/production is really going up, probably it's ahead of PS4 at the same point in March 2014.
I mean, I think this was always the plan.

rise, even its end credits, were smaller than world. (Ie, two teams, one smaller).

I am VERY curious already to see what world does. Rise took some steps that do stray from the core of monster hunter. The main village quests are quite breezy. The added mobility is fun, but then they take away some of the tracking elements that the older monhun had.
In short, I feel like I’m fighting monsters rather than hunting them. Didn’t feel that way in world.

still having a great time though.

but yeah, are prepared for World 2 up up yet?

With how big the switch user base is compared to the ps4 in Japan especially when you compare it to the ps4 in 2018... mh rise definitely seems to be underperforming

I guess Nintendo fans would rather play animal crossing than this? This is easily the best game on the system since breath of the wild
Ha. Remember some folks were convinced world was going to flop because it wasn’t on a Nintendo handheld.

Due to Rise's launch Nintendo & Pokemon Co. make up less than 50% of Software sales this Quarter within the Top 50.
With the launch of Rise, Capcom becomes the number one 3rd Party Publisher - although I expected at least 1.5 million physical sales, but I guess anecdotal information turned out to be wrong and the actual shipment was around 1.4 million.
Konami's position this year continues to be great, and by the end of Q2 Momotaro will surpass 1 million for the year. Baseball Spirits will be looking to build on their success, so they will probably end up with over 2 million sales this year without much problems.
Marvelous had a big chance to get a break-out hit, but Olive Town's launch definitely hurt it's potential. If WoM was good we would have been looking at around 450-500K sales for them this quarter. Hopefully they don't make the same mistakes with Rune Factory 5 in a couple of months.

So, Balan is a confirmed flop. Didn't make the top 30 on either platform in Japan and missed the UK top 40 despite being on everything. Haven't seen it enter the top 100 on any Amazon listings.

I don't know why Square even bothered with the game.

52k consoles sold, no game sold even 2k copies, in a country where most people still buy physical... I know Team Sony doesn't want to talk about this, but it's really intriguing, even outside the console war lense.
What makes it worse was when Sony standardized Japan button setting with the whole world that made it easier for scalpers to sell outside of Japan.

China's grey market and south east asian market are the primary locations of where these consoles are being sold.

Honestly, this is bad for Japanese game developers because only tiny fractions of console sold in Japan is currently being used by regular gamers and most of it either in Scalpers' storage or already out of Japan.

One Quarter in, Third Party results are already quickly closing in on last year's result on the Switch.
By the end of April the 2021 result will surpass 2020 due to Rise, while in May we have the next major third party game launching - Rune Factory 5.

Man the next 7 weeks on the comparison ps4 sales were very low. Ps5 is going to take a commanding lead. It's a stretch but imagine Sony could keep up 50k supply a week. Personally I'd be happy with 30k.

Yeah at this point Ps5 is about to murder PS4, i beleive it will be inline with Ps3 or a little higher but all depends on the next Final Fantasy, DQ, Monster Hunter and so on.

These franchises need to hit Ps5 sooner rather than later to keep it going over there, it´s a completely different market from the West where PS could sell on brand name alone alongside Fifa and Cod, GTA etc.

Yeah, seeing people on here trying to make the sales seem somehow lackluster is strange. The Rise launch lacked availability and considering the massive legs popular titles have on the Switch it's not hard to see that Rise is gonna cruise past 10 million like it's absolutely nothing, probably gonna hit 15 million without too much struggle.

Pokemon Snap is going to be fire. Pokemon is so hot here right now.

Top 11 Pokemon Spin-offs
  1. [NSW] Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu! / Let's Go Eevee! (2018) - 1,767,352
  2. [DS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: EOT/EOD (2007) - 1,551,640
  3. [DS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: BRT/RRT (2005) - 1,476,762
  4. [GB] Pokémon Card Game (1998) - 931,614
  5. [GB] Pokémon Pinball (1999) - 796,693
  6. [N64] Pokémon Stadium 2 (2000) - 742,467
  7. [N64] Pokémon Stadium (1999) - 710,762
  8. [NGC] Pokémon Colosseum (2003) - 656,189
  9. [NGC] Pokémon Ranger (2006) - 650,334
  10. [DS] Pokémon Ranger (2010) - 501,739
  11. [N64] Pokémon Snap (1999) - 495,784
For Pokemon Snap anything above 500K would be a great result in Japan, depending on reception it could end up double N64's result.
With Sword & Shield doing really well, with it's lifetime shipment ending up 2nd only behind Red/Blue/Green. Combined with the new the audience games like Ring Fit/New Horizon have bought over. Finally factoring if there are any dlc plans, and you've got a game that could be one of the best selling Pokemon Spin-offs joining Lets Go at the top. It's not guaranteed however as we saw Rescue Team DX only managing around 400K lifetime as a best case scenario. For Snap WoM and on future content are going to be key

Also not sure if everyone agrees with me classifying Lets Go as a spin-off but that's how I view it

The landscape of Pokemon is completely different to last year. The demand for Pokémon is through the roof right now even for Japan. They are absolutely killing it with the TCG, with stuff selling out in minutes online and basically everything being sold over MSRP. People want Pokemon anything. I think Snap could be huge, and smash a lot of expectations. It certainly helps that it looks fantastic.

4 million on switch?

regardless, it was more of a comment about world doing so well rather than rise also doing well. Some folks were just so convinced world would flop.

I’m just glad the franchise is getting the attention it deserves

For Rise the interesting thing is beating MH4 in the next 10 Weeks, with digital it beat it's launch by at least 135K, so if it's trending similarly to MH4 which launched on the 3DS in 2013

Monster Hunter 4 Post-Launch First 11Weeks:
Famitsu Sales: Week 37, 2013 (Sep 09 - Sep 15) - 1.875.115 / NEW
Media Create Sales: Week 38, 2013 (Sep 16 - Sep 22)
- 473.739 (-72%)
Media Create Sales: Week 39, 2013 (Sep 23 - Sep 29) - 213.278 (-55%)
Media Create Sales: Week 40, 2013 (Sep 30 - Oct 06) - 140.538 (-34%)
Media Create Sales: Week 41, 2013 (Oct 07 - Oct 13) - 110.208 (-22%)
Media Create Sales: Week 42, 2013 (Oct 14 - Oct 20) - 104.394 (-5%)
Media Create Sales: Week 43, 2013 (Oct 21 - Oct 27) - 68.160 (-35%)
Media Create Sales: Week 44, 2013 (Oct 28 - Nov 03) - 46.729 (-31%)
Media Create Sales: Week 45, 2013 (Nov 04 - Nov 10) - 40.205 (-14%)
Media Create Sales: Week 46, 2013 (Nov 11 - Nov 17) - 26.358 (-34%)
Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2013 (Nov 18 - Nov 24) - 21.120 (-20%)

LAUNCH: 1.875.115
NEXT 10 WEEKS: 1.244.729
TOTAL: 3.119.844

LIFETIME TOTAL: 3.591.334

MH3
legs were cut short due to MH3U releasing one year later. Unlike prior entries on, the Ultimate version will be available digitally and there is additional content releasing on Rise in the coming weeks and months.
In their second weeks New Horizon managed -61% while Momotaro managed -63% drops, so there is certainly precedent on the Switch, it just depends on how much retailers ordered and what Capcom shipped. Next week if Rise manages over 520K it would be a -60% similar to New Horizon/Momotaro, if we apply MH4's drop of -72% that we are looking at 364K second week for Rise. While if it follows MHW's -83% drop its just 221K
In anycase with digital the game should pass 3 million in May,
Although the physical launch shipment was surprising, the main thing to consider are the long term sales. That's how it eventually takes the Crown from MH3 on the PSP with its 4.8 million

MHW
is not really a good comparison despite the similar launch because it fell off so quickly from the chart, something I over-viewed in last week's thread, it managed to only add 1.1 million additional sales after the launch according to the Capcom leaks, something I think Rise will be able to do by May.

Monster Hunter World Legs
  1. Famitsu Sales: Week 5, 2018 (Jan 29 - Feb 04) - 223.274 (-83%)
  2. Famitsu Sales: Week 6, 2018 (Feb 05 - Feb 11) - 114.740 (-49%)
  3. Famitsu Sales: Week 7, 2018 (Feb 12 - Feb 18) - 85.762 (-25%)
  4. Famitsu Sales: Week 8, 2018 (Feb 19 - Feb 25) - 54.915 (-36%)

The fact that Rise is about even with PS4 MHW in spite of the Switch's much larger install base is interesting. We saw in another recent thread that the Switch is a bit of a paper tiger when it comes to software sales worldwide, I guess that applies to Japan as well.

Nothing about Switch's software sales make it a "paper tiger", a glance at any sales chart from the counties we get them from would tell us that (this is especially true for Japan, look at the top 30 just posted).

Switch's userbase is irrelevant when Capcom sold 94 per cent of the carts they shipped.

The sales charts only account for physical sales, which makes them irrelevant. The vast majority of games sold on PS4/PS5 are digital. PS4 software sales vastly outstripped Switch software sales in 2020.

NPD includes digital and we see Switch games charting there all the time (even with many digital Switch sales not included).

I'm not saying Switch sold more total software than PS4, I'm saying that Switch has very strong software sales and Monster Hunter Rise is proof for that, not against it.

Rise is proof that Switch can only break even with PS4 on a comparable game in a market where it's sold vastly more consoles. That doesn't really seem like strong software sales to me.

Ris can't sell more vastly more than World physically first week when Capcom didn't ship vastly more then World for the first week. Rise is likely to have better legs in the long term and that's where it'll outsell World in Japan.

You can't seriously look at the Top 30 in Japan and say Switch doesn't have strong software sales, even if the chart doesn't include digital.

Switch dominates Japanese software sales because it's sold over twice as many consoles as its closest competitor in that market. But clearly its software sales are proportionally weak compared to the number of consoles sold worldwide. Whether this applies in Japan as well I don't think we have the data to tell, but MHR's numbers aren't really very encouraging at the moment.

That's not at all clear and isn't supported by any of the data. What are you basing that on and what do you count as 'weak'.

It is objectively true. Go compare Sony's and Nintendo's 2020 annual reports.
Do you mean the financials where you and others were slobbering over all that microtransaction cash sony rakes in?
at the same point in the ps4's life, it had like 580 million vs the switches 530 million software units, that isn't exactly a huge difference especially considering gta 5 made up like half the difference at the time and over 10% of the ps4 software if from the cod/madden/fifa annuals calling switch software sales weak is absurd.

ah, I see, it is, majority of that blue section is microtransactions/subscriptions/vc, I guess sony has mastered the art of nickel and diming people and they love it.

Why would Sony be the decider for what counts as strong software sales? It's possible for Switch and PS4 to both have strong software sales. Even then there are two major issues with that comparison:

1. PS4 had a larger userbase than Switch in 2020
2. Sony and Nintendo don't count software sales in the same way. Sony counts digital only games but Nintendo doesn't.

If you were thinking about that locked thread that zedinen made then the figures he was talking about are completely different to what we are talking about.

The only figures that matter are dollar sales.

Switch has double the install base of PS4 in Japan dude, please try to keep up.
1. You just said dollar sales are all that matters, so why are you going back and saying install base is important?
2. As I've already told you Rise sold out at launch (94 per cent sell through of its first shipment). How could it sell vastly more than World first week if its first shipment was the same size as World's?

Rise will outsell World lifetime in Japan, I'm happy to put a bet on that. Switch having double the userbase doesn't mean Rise has to sell double that of World. That's not how these sales work.

Jesus Christ this is like arguing with a gibbon. OK. My argument is that, and I quote, "Switch software sales are proportionally weak compared to the number of consoles sold worldwide. Whether this applies in Japan as well I don't think we have the data to tell, but MHR's numbers aren't really very encouraging at the moment."

MHR supports my argument because its software sales in Japan (in dollars/yen AND in units sold) are proportionally lower than MHW sales in Japan on PS4 given the Switch's larger install base.

Rise does have to sell double World in Japan (in dollars/yen) for my argument, that Switch has proportionally lower software sales than PlayStation, to be disproven.

Fundamentally, a lot of the Switch's recent success is illusory. Lots of people buy it as a second console and don't wind up using it as much as their primary console. This means they spend less money on games for it.
