90s easily. Between the SNES and the PS1/N64 generations I don't think we'll ever have anything similar in both game design/creativity, and uniqueness of each platform.

Never cared about marketing. I was playing games and there weren't many 2D games. Low resolution and masterful pixel art like SNK used to do pretty much died with the Neo Geo. I was not talking about gameplay, but visuals strictly. There were many games with 2D gameplay but 3D visuals.
I never was tlaking about gameplay you are twisting my words to form your own hallucination.

There WRERE plenty of HIGH Resolution sprite/pixel art 2D games, you only know SNK because of how long they were running the Neogeo and some of the late ports, those were out dated by the mid 90's only really lasting longer than they did because of the poor 2D seen in plenty of console games at the time, by the late 90's and early 2000's 2D games reached their peak, but the output of 3D games was so high most people dont know about how much there were and eventually that went out of control once ou hit the mid 90's onward, and like I said the indie games didnt help here either because it regressed the 2D graphics style with fake 8/18 bit graphics.

early 2000's is the lst hurrah of 2D actually improving and trying new things. I get why though, the new stuff back then was somewhat expensive and tools for 2D games weren't really given even priority so you had to use resources and make your own tools to really create better 2D games.

I am not twisting anything I was simply explaining more clearly my argument in case you missed the point. Stop being so aggressive.

I never found high resolution 2D to be the same as the low resolution pixel work I love.

Why not share a list of the games you are referring to ? I can see Guilty Gear or Vanillaware games (and these would certainly not be during the beginning of the 2000s).

90's by a country mile. The 16bit and 32bit gens in one decade. So much creativity, su many genres, so much experimentation.
I always call those 2 gens the 'Golden Age' of gaming.

Kind of a difficult question to answer since right now you have hd remakes and remasters of all those great old games.. they're dirt cheap, often portable, and sometimes better than the originals.

So I guess right now is my answer, it's like most of gaming history is alive and playable on a half a dozen platforms in my living room. I easily have 500 games right there on switch, ps3+4, 3ds, PC, and Wii u (for dozens of VC games, including the original wii VC mode).

If that's not a good answer then ps2/gamecube/xbox along with the GREAT PC mmorpgs of that early 2000s era.

God such a tough call between 90s and 00s. Its like 51% / 49% for me. By the skin of its teeth its the 90s. Simple PC games, Super Nintendo, PS and N64, just glorious!

This decade ( or should I say last decade, damn) was very meh, I dont think ill remember the PS4 that fondly in 10 years. It was fine, sure but I dunno im not dying to replay games like the old days. Could be my age im not sure?

1984 to now.

Because I do not follow the rules.
Each decade appeals to gamers for the nostalgia and the childhood memories. Also I had an awesome childhood, thanks to my uncle I was very young in the late 90's playing NES, SNES, PS1, N64... so I have found memories of those.

When brood war and cs 1.6 were in their prime. I thought it was only the beginning and the future held so much in store..but it's all been downhill from there. Rip

The 90s were my favorite decade for everything, not just gaming. Video games were awesome, sure, but I was done with school, I got my license and my first car, gas was cheap, I wasn't old and fat and still had hair. Everything was looking streets ahead, then the 2000s came around and it's been a ride straight back downhill ever since.

Honestly I have to say 2001-2010. Leaving out a lot of golden ones in the previous decade, but damn dood. 6th gen was a golden time. And the first half of Xbox 360/ps3 was ace.

Plus 2001 had conker and paper Mario even though that’s 64!

My opinion remains that from the early 1990s to the late 2000s was the golden period of gaming. This was before season passes, chapters, f2p nonsense, day 1 patches, microtransactions and all that other bullshit that has completely fucked gaming.

How can you say that with that avatar?

I love what older PS consoles gave me, and I listen to the PS1 startup from time to time. But if you offer me all the games from PS1-PS3 for free I won't touch any. Same goes to Nintendo Family Computer (NES) and Sega Megadrive, and of course Atari 2600 that I started gaming on.

Easily 1990-2000. I was old enough to appreciate the Genesis and SNES when it came out and the big leap in graphics in sound. Games were getting closer and closer to the arcade. Plus, arcades were still in full swing and it was a near weekly occurrence going to the arcade on the weekends. Game magazines were also at their peak. Tagging along to the grocery store and getting the latest EGM and GamePro were super fond memories. Towards the end of the decade, I got a PC and got back into PC gaming. EverQuest debuted right at the end and that was the perfect capper to my favorite decade.

Honestly, I felt like that was the last decade that games felt like games. Once we went fully 3D, I feel like gaming lost something. It was no longer pop a game in, power on the system and start playing. It became more about cinematic experiences, trying to copy real life and mass market appeal.

unpopular and objectively wrong opinion, but whatever: 2011-2020

games like dark souls, bloodborne, etc make that the best era for gaming for me. Very few games from previous gens compete with FromSoftware masterpiece goodness. That's just my opinion, and I also think games like uncharted and TLOU raised the bar so high for action/adventure games. Same can be said for open world games like Witcher 3 and RDR2, which I don't even enjoy playing that much TBH, but they're amazing. One thing I liked from the pre-PS4 era (PS3) is the much, much more thriving online community and components. Playing online nowadays, or even since like 2013, is just kind of lame and lackluster.

I have great nostalgia for previous gens like 1991-2000 or 2001-2010, because n64, sega genesis, PS2 were great, but I guess I just like new games more. It's like comparing Doom 2016 to OG Doom from the 90's. Both are groundbreaking, but which one is actually more fun to play and visually/mechanically pleasing? Same thing with Resident Evil 2 remake vs OG resident evil 2, Mortal Kombat X compared to OG Mortal Kombat, or Tomb Raider 2013 compared to OG Tomb Raider. One thing I will say is that 90's games definitely had a different and sometimes better atmosphere, and I do enjoy the focus on actual gameplay over a forced/unskippable story.

Yup. The 90s (PC too) had so many innovations like mode 7, CDs, video cards, anti-aliasing, and the beginning of 3D etc....

Taken for granted on PC storage, but PS even had memory cards. Before that it was battery backup for an extra $10, or a shitty password system where if you got the 16 character code wrong you were fucked. 0 vs O, S vs 5, Z vs 2. Make sure your handwriting was neat.

No doubt FMW was cringey, but it had it's purpose, and CDs with so much storage allowed awesome rendered intros and cut scenes.

2000 - 2010 had some really memorable experiences:

* World of Warcraft
* MGS2/3/4
* Morrowind
* Dragon Age Origins
* Mass Effect 1 + 2
* Halo CE
* GTA 3 + VC + SA + 4
* Demon Souls
* Diablo 2

I could go on, 90 - 2000 would be a close runner up for me.

2000 had Paper Mario.

Edit: 2001 for us, my bad.

Hmm the first game that started the golden era of gaming for me was Phantasy Star II. Released 1990 in the west.
And the last game I truly enjoyed except a bunch of indie games that came out lately would be... well probably Fragile Dreams in 2009.

But as for decade I'd definitely pick the 1991-2000 one.

From feeling I'd say it started getting better from 1990 on. Then reached the peak 1996-2002 and then slowly went worse afterwards. After 2009, gaming was pretty much dead for me.

How can I miss the point of something YOU were RESPONDING TO FROM ME?

Classic echo syndrome, you're hallucinating what you wanted to believe you read, you are now moving goal posts, I made the topic and my point really simple, you shouldn't have gotten lost.

I'll go with the 2000s. 3d was finally ready to supplant 2d in all genres, it marked the beginning of modern gaming (maybe not so modern in 2021) without many of modern gaming's problems, even handhelds saw a huge jump in quality. It's tough to not choose the 90s, but 2000s had classic compilations, remakes and sequels, and even emulation, so the 90s weren't too far from memory

My real answer is 1989-2009, but that's not a decade

I've been playing video games regularly since 1982. I started with Atari 2600 and local arcade games like Pac-Man and Centipede. Since then I've seen and personally experienced this medium evolve, over the course of nearly 40 years at this point. I say without question that video gaming was at its apex in the 1990s. There are many reasons why, and to explain them all would take more time than I care to invest at the moment. Instead I'll just say that even though I own a PS4 and ~150 games for it, I'm still going back to the '90s to play games from that era regularly. Last night I was playing The Granstream Saga on my Retroid Pocket 2.
