[LTTP] Final Fantasy IX

Village of Dali is right when the plot begins to intensify. Decided to go to the corridor where the Black Mages where being (harvested?) mass produced instead of through the door with the Mist. Not sure what was behind that door but I wish I would have checked and opened it if possible. Defeated Black Waltz II near the destroyed farm land and then boarded the air ship with the entire crew. And now Zidane is being restricted from going to see the Princess (she's in the engine room) by Steiner. He's trying to overtake the ship and turn it away from its destination of the Castle in Alexandria and instead fly towards Lindblum, where Garnet wishes to go

Spoiler warning: Some spoilers about chocobos... but nothing about the plot or ending or anything like that

I played it as a kid and loved it, but I didn’t do any of the chocobo stuff and therefore was really limited to how much I could travel the world until getting the airship.

I played again earlier this year and made sure to get the get all the chocobos and made the game soooo much more enjoyable. I explored every nook and cranny, found most of the hard to get weapons and items, and leveled up my characters in all of the areas with the best enemies, gained nearly all abilities for all my characters, collected a lot of cards, and more. I got so much more out of the game this time around.

I would say it was about the time that I got the chocobo that could climb mountains, which I guess is like halfway through the game, maybe 2/3 of the way through?

Man I had such a blast with it. My opinion on it is so much better now. I feel it is the most “Final Fantasy” final fantasy game, if that makes sense. Sort of like harkening back to pre PS era FF, and really giving that style an epic send off. The FF theme playing during the credits of FFIX is such a perfect ending. Great game. Enjoy it man and take your time combing through every area. It truly is the last of its kind :( Not sure we will ever get another FF quite like it, unfortunately.
Today was the first time I've ever seen a chocobo in a Final Fantasy game. Tell me this Kev Kev Kev Kev , if you could live in a mansion in Beverly Hills built and designed exactly like a chocobo, would accept such a property?

Going to be playing this adventure for a long while, I like the pacing and the characters a lot. Can't wait until another teammate joins the crew. I have a strong feeling that this ship will land at the Castle right before Zidane gets control of it and the Chef will probably hop aboard, ready to receive some of the shipment meant for the kitchen is my guess
Exactly, it's part of her defense.

But(t) then... why does she... later...

:messenger_open_mouth:
Zidane told Vivi that he's well known by all the ladies in Lindblum a bit earlier and to let him know if he's having any girl problems. I think climbing up the air ship ladder right as it took off Zidane even grabbed Dagger's ass and commented, "Ooo soft" lmao

Before even Trump, Zidane was grabbing the goods. Also, if there is a gangbang waiting to happen in Lindblum, this could be the greatest game of all time. I already found a gif of Vivi at the after party

From the beginning, but more and more. Before having a memory card I played the intro, forest, ice cave up to Dali several times and enjoyed it immensely. Finally being able to save properly and continue the journey, it was magical. That cutscene with Blank saving the crew in the forest was the coolest back then and excuse to watch it again before everything was simple and instant on the internet was of no concern. Not long after I had to do the same with Luigi's Mansion, but finishing that game without a memory card was easy as it's quite short. Man, fuck memory cards, remember those? Specifically when reaching Lindblum with plot reveals and heading out to Gizamaluke's Grotto -> Burmecia -> Cleyra*, where the world map opens up more and it being one of the first challenging boss.

*(Small location name spoilers)

Nah, because it's in Beverly Hills, sounds a bit too posh :messenger_tears_of_joy: Maybe the Spencer Mansion in Beverly Hills? Need a bit of brooding darkness as contrast.

Zidane is a popular gentleman indeed, and there will be a hunt, but not of the ladies this time ;) That gif is horrifying!

It's a cool little room with a mist engine. No fret, just some regular healing items and two enemies.

@Fushitsusha

That reminds me of a certain Spencer Mansion thread in the Off-Topic I’ll have to bump one of these days. Has there been zombie chocobos in any FF game yet?

Zidane definitely grabbed on purpose. It was the perfect scenario. He could grab as firmly as he pleased and simply tell her he needed to grab the ladder or else he was going to fall while the ship was rapidly ascending

I got to Lindblum and there is a lot of talk in this kingdom about a hunt, a type of festival. A lot is happening so quickly here, it’s playing out exactly like a movie and I can hardly believe how much detail has gone into FFIX lately. The characters, the dialogue, the script, the plot steadily growing pace immaculate, and there is depth upon depth upon excellence everywhere you go in this game. A while back, after confronting and beating Baku, the band members all had something new to say. This game is so lively with its writing and characters. Right now, the most recent key moment was Zidane meeting Freya in the bar after about three years. They spoke briefly about her boyfriend and if she was going to find him or something, as well as the festival everyone is excited about. Freya seems very tough, maybe an equal to Zidane if I had to guess solely by how they were speaking to each other. Lindblum is great too, I’ve been exploring a lot. Buying more than I usually do as well. I read that it’s good to purchase in shops so I’m trying not to be so frugal with the Gil and spend a few thousand every now and again. Vivi was given a Moogle nut or something on the house by a shopkeeper earlier, Steiner got owned by a Red Mage chick and then further embarrassed by Grandma Pickle so all is well

After missing out on the Mist room I’m going to be more careful about checking out the rooms that are before the ones in a pathway ahead. Need to be more aware when checking out areas that may have an important event like that taking place

This game is a lot of fun, and it grows on you quickly. I hope all FF games offer something like this in their own way. I’ve been thinking about a lot of them, they all seem excellent. Even though I bought FFVII and FFVIII, there is something about FFXIV and FFXV that seems to be calling - and I get the feeling that those are unforgettable games just like FFIX is for most of the fanbase

Moogles are cool, they look like tubby cat bats lol

While there are many variations of Chocobos in Final Fantasy, and even its own spin-off games, I can't recall any type of zombie type at the moment.

Zidane messing with Freya calling her every name under the sun is some funny banter showing their relationship. She is an amazing character and fighter, extremely handy in the upcoming boss battle mentioned above. How did you like the reveal of Cid having been transformed into an Oglop, and also the one who ordered the Tantalus gang to kidnap Princess Garnet? Was it expected? He knew something was up before most. Lindblum is pretty big with many districts and a joy to explore. The Festival of the Hunt is quite important, be sure to try your best for good rewards!

From the early game FMVs that showcase the series never needed voice acting, in the escape from Evil Forest Zidane clearly displays remorse for Blank's sacrifice but quickly switches to determination and that he won't let his sacrifice be in vain. Without saying a word.

The second FMV is a great chase sequence that shows off the large scale of the South Gate and lends itself to the world building all while you feel sympathetic towards Vivi.

The game starts off slower and has a longer build up but the pay off is massive, disc 2 and 3 of FF IX just get better and better.

VI (Super Nintendo) until X + XII (Playstation 2) is the peak and do offer a similar amount of complexity and content. You have 3 of the most essential. They lend the greatest introduction to the series. Before VI on SNES and after XII on PS2 it can be debated, but even a "bad" Final Fantasy is pretty great.

While I think VI and VII are probably objectively the best games in the series, in retrospect IX will stand the test of time best. Final Fantasy has been a series characterized by frenetic innovation and boundary-pushing, but IX shows that it probably would have been better off over the long term if it had settled into a somewhat more conservative orientation like Dragon Quest. With Sakaguchi gone there was nobody to stand up to Square's idiot executives and fight for the artistic integrity of the series, and the series rapidly went off the rails, pursuing graphical and gameplay innovation for its own sake instead of in service to a compelling narrative.

What are your thoughts overall up to this point? Is FFIX impressing or exceeding any expectations that you had before playing?

She looks tough and talks like she’s on Zidane’s level or better. Zidane speaks to her on pretty rough terms in a sense, not showing a lot of empathy for her situation (but he still cares enough to check up on her and the ordeal) so in this way, I can sense she is very capable and a character Zidane has a lot of confidence in. Basically I get the feeling Freya hardcore

I was pretty amused to find that the enemy didn’t turn transform Cid into an Oglop, but his wife after realizing he was having an affair lmao. Cid is incredible though, his orders and his discretion as King of Lindblum have made this game extremely interesting. I’m going to spend a lot of time in Lindblum exploring next gaming session and get a feel for his kingdom. And thanks for the heads up, going to try to 100% any minigames if there are more opportunities like the one in Alexandria during the play’s sword fighting scene
Say Cutty Flam Cutty Flam , do you like chess?
Chess is a lot of fun. I take the game very seriously and am super competitive (I get pretty worked up most losses lol) but tbh my skill level is nowhere near Grandmaster. Have played maybe a thousand or so matches of chess I’d estimate, but I don’t study the game intently so I’m not as great as I should be for all the time spent playing lol
How well does the Blank petrification cutscene hold up 2 decades later for first time players?
I like Blank’s character a lot. I think Oda actually might have drawn a character in One Piece to give nod to Blank. They look to similar for it to be coincidence. A character you have seen by now in OP too, personally one of the greats in the show IMO. But the scene in the Evil Forrest with Blank was a great scene. I especially enjoyed knowing that Baku was looking after Zidane all this time despite how it looked earlier; sending Blank to keep an eye out for Zidane. Blank acts like a big shot but I think he might look up to Zidane in some ways? This is how it appears to me, sort of like he is a competitive rival, in a way, but the respect is there

FFVI, from my point of view, seems to be the most respected title in the Final Fantasy franchise, even if it’s not the most talked about. I’ve asked a lot of people about these games, and I’be noticed that FFIV receives the least amount of criticism

Final Fantasy IX has always been my favorite in the series. There's so much to love about the game but I think my favorite thing about it is that its story and characters had me hooked from start to finish more so than any other Final Fantasy entry. I remember the funny banter between Zidane and Steiner, and also Vivi who was shy but became more courageous over time. Kuja was also a cool villain and I loved so many things like when Steiner and Beatrix were defending Alexandria. Beatrix herself was a cool female character. Tetra Master is also a fun minigame on top of an already amazing fantasy RPG with a uniquely charming, beautiful and often dream-like medieval fantasy world. And the soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu is legendary. I know some people don't like the battles because they're a little slower than Final Fantasy VII and VIII but they are still pretty fun. Especially if you appreciate a more classic Final Fantasy experience.

Lol yes I loved the interactions between the moogles and their letters!

that’s the other thing, the game is genuinely funny. There were several times throughout my recent play through that I was actually chuckling. I think a lot if had to do with the fact that there are no cringy VAs, and you can just enjoy and laugh at the content for what it is.

pkayibg an FF is like reading an epic adventure book. We are supposed to by using our imagination! Having VAs always took away from that experience, imo. Just another reason why FFIX was like a tribute and send off to a certain style of FF that we will likely never see again. Square seems very proud of their animation and VA work these days, and they should be bc FFVII Remake is some of the best in video game, dare I say THE best. But it’s still not Hollywood level... he’ll it’s not even Toy Story level. Maybe it’ll get there one day 🤷‍♂️

I still enjoy the newer games for what they are, just for the record. But I wish they would develop and release an old school FF with zero VAs from time to time. I think people would eat it up!

It kept the PS1 on its toes right when the PS2 was out. I had it on launch from Best Buy. Those were the days. I liked it. The last disc froze on me, so I had a kid in high school burn it for me. I used the swap trick to beat it. I’ve finished it, but I only ever went back to it for the secret bosses. I have owned it many different times over the years and for nostalgia purposes I’ll start it again. It was good, but I also like to play the other games in the franchise. I did try it again on iOS and that cheat option breaks the game. You can just cruise through it. It’s a game I wouldn’t miss. At the time, it was one of the best RPGs on the market. That’s what you get when you really put yourself into a game. You want something to come along and take it’s place.

Random thoughts:

-Festival of the Hunt was exciting but I lost. Freya sorta dominated and got her item of choice. Didn’t like losing out on the $$$ or Gil prize for Zindane but I think in the end, Freya winning is the best outcome. Better her than Vivi who just wanted a fucking card lmao. It was the spur of the moment though, he didn't even know he was going to participate until last minute, so he's forgiven haha

-Vivi and Freya are my favorite characters. Steiner is growing on me, like his character a lot now more and more as the game goes on. Zidane is a great leader, I had no idea he would be the leader of this pack when I was trying to figure out which FF game to play. I thought it was going to be Steiner, because he always stuck out in the PS cover

-Grandma Pickle is the unsung hero of FFIX

-Faced a dragon in the overworld (a Moogle [a newlywed Moogle] warned Zidane of danger outside but I ignored her) and it was way too strong. Lost twice and had to retreat back to the underground

-Burmecia soldiers are getting massacred everywhere, there was at least a dozen that died before Zidane and the crews eyes or were already finished off, some were hanging on to last breaths, almost all of them were mortally wounded. One managed to hold on for the sake of his wife and unborn child, and I think Zidane saving his life renewed that soldier's spirit as help came to take him to Lindblum. I think that character had a 'Z' in his name and hoped that Zidane would come back to see him and his family, his child after birth. Zidane said looking forward to it and advanced with the crew

-Chocobo Hot and Cold is a lot of fun while taking a break from the main story

-Kuja, trying to figure out my first impression of this villain...Kuja had on a really interesting choice of clothing. Pretty much 70% naked in the Realm of Eternal Rain, no armor at all it seemed. Kuja is the one creating all these black mages. I can already begin to see what might transpire later. Definitely a powerful foe to be tricking the Queen so easily and looking over entire armies calling them rats. He or is Kuja a chick (?) and Beatrix were basically treating Zidane and his crew like they were flies. I think Kuja even commented that one of them might be a problem later but made no effort at all to kill any of them; just made the remark and that was that. I think he was talking about Vivi but maybe it was Zidane

-I love the fighting in this game, the amount of mistakes I'm making shows how seriously you have to be engaged to maximize your time and efforts when in battle. Getting stronger takes a lot of work. And it's not just about fights, exploring makes you stronger in its ways in FFIX; experiencing the whole game will lead to a more fortified crew

-FFIX is easily playing like a 9.6/10 right now. The excitement, the wonder, the story and the world continues to grow. This is the most enjoyable game I've played since BOTW when I bought the Nintendo Switch. So FFIX is the second most fun game I've played in two years. I gotta say though, RE2 Remake has been stellar as well but FFIX is easily the second best game I've played in the span of the last 27 months

-Puck is still the GOAT

Those are good results, maybe perfect even. Vivi's prize is probabably the worst of the three. Did you discover the Zaghnol that drops closer to the end? Gives a lot of points.

The sounds of the Experience Points rolling and subsequent Level Up chime is enjoyable. Aquiring skills, levels, equipment is so important and a RPG without many of these things (modern Paper Mario) is so disappointing.

How do you find the skill mechanics (aquiring them from equipment)? It's different from VII and VIII for sure.

There is more to say but still fairly early and don't want to spoil :messenger_grinning_sweat:

You wouldn't believe how correct you are with this and a previous comment :messenger_tears_of_joy: Hope that's vague enough. Did you get the Mythril Spear for Freya? It's not very hidden but I've always liked aquiring that weapon and scene in that myserious room. Scenes like this and the Moogle Marriage keeps things fun.

Would you say that Final Fantasy Tactics is on par with the main Final Fantasy games? I've heard people praise FF Tactics but haven't looked into it at all yet. I'm impressed with the series, thanks for guiding me to play FFIX first. Was hesitant at first since I thought nothing can beat FFVII as the starting point, but this is the perfect introduction. The overworld in FFIX even brings me back to the days of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in some ways. I knew Square Enix and Square Soft were top of the line dvelpers putting out extraordinary games but I never realized they had reached this level. All I knew was what I had played of SMRPG back in the day. So I will say this: Arigoto, Fushitsusha Fushitsusha !!!!!
Did you discover the Zaghnol that drops closer to the end? Gives a lot of points.

I didn't find that beast unfortunately, I wasted a lot of precious time making mistakes and that's what cost me. I've been calming my tendencies though so now it will be a bit more efficient. The Festival of the Hunt is like 12 minutes but it seemed like it was only 3 minutes because I was in such a rush hahaha it actually felt like I was competing in a grand event
Good grinding spot. Any grinding so far, or not even for Gizamaluke? One of the first challenging encounters.
Gizamaluke Grotto has shown me that FFIX is going to be challenging. I thought I had prepared well up to this point but now it's clear to see that FFIX is a strikingly perilous quest and honing characters through many battles is necessary. If the underlings are this powerful, I can only imagine the fully sentient bosses that are capable of tactics and strategies of their own. Largely, it has just been beasts and such that the crew has fought up to this point. Beatrix is the first foe to show true expertise in battle and make me realize that there is much work to be done

I knew going into this game that I'd have to get all my characters on an epic level of fighting prowess and take the combat seriously, so I've set aside time to specifically master the battle system and enter the field for long excursions at battle with all the field monsters. Probably 2-3 hours so far have been spent doing extra battles, and it's great to see the characters in battle so I don't mind. I'm going to try to fight that dragon a few more times after I try to craft and hone my efficiency in the ATB system a bit more. I'm starting to get addicted to the story and its characters so battling in the fields allows for time to think about everything else that's taking place right now. Getting crazy over here, war between a few countries and counting seems inevitable at this point. Kuja has too much power on his/her side for this not to look like the future reality for these kingdoms
The sounds of the Experience Points rolling and subsequent Level Up chime is enjoyable. Aquiring skills, levels, equipment is so important and a RPG without many of these things (modern Paper Mario) is so disappointing.
Agreed. I hope someone from Intelligent Systems holds a meeting and delivers a legendary speech to get that series back on track. Too much charm to not invest in what made the Paper Mario series great in the first place
How do you find the skill mechanics (aquiring them from equipment)? It's different from VII and VIII for sure.
I'm still getting used to it. I bought this game for the Switch (digitally) so there is no manual for all the skills and abilities so I'll need to find a quality guide explaining everything. I actually don't know much about the items, skills, abilities, and other areas because of this reason. That is the only complaint that can even be made because this game is so overwhelmingly great. If I had information on everything being attained, then FFIX would be a perfect game up to this point
There is more to say but still fairly early and don't want to spoil :messenger_grinning_sweat:
Feel free to talk at length about anything FFIX, will come back to read the posts. I consider this thread to be a celebration of the game - in all ways. I'm pretty good about glossing over spoilers, although one day I accidentally spoiled something huge for myself in FFX in a specific thread talking about sad endingslmao. But the thread showed it was spoilers, so I should have known marked spoilers tags and insline spoilers tags weren't going to be used by many tbh

I just want to add congratulations on finishing Disc 1 and that Kuja's androgynous look is not just for show. You wouldn't believe how correct you are with this and a previous comment :messenger_tears_of_joy: Hope that's vague enough. Did you get the Mythril Spear for Freya? It's not very hidden but I've always liked aquiring that weapon and scene in that myserious room.
Thanks! I didn't even know that was 1/4th of the game. Pretty much the perfect sending off into the rest of the first half of FFIX. I got two powerful weapons in that are. Freya is very distraught but her valor keeps increasing rapidly despite all the conflict she's dealing with. She grabbed the Mythril Spear and Vivi even got a powerful weapon in the save room with the Moogle in the house adjacent to the one with the Mythril Spear. Then some random Moogle named Stiltzkin walked in and offered three items for like 333 Gil. I bought them and moved onto find the King of Burmecia. Kuja deduced that he was nowhere near, but had likely fled to a sandy kingdom. It's like Kuja can tell for certain this is the case. I don't know how he/she can tell but I would guess this villain might know the world very well; that or have some sort of power that allows a glimpse of the future. It sounds believable, he's capable of giving life to Black Mages so it's probably not a shot in the dark to say this character is extremely powerful, possibly a demigod

I will respond to this because it is urgent; press "Select" for descriptions in the menu (items/skills/etc). That would be the "-" button on the Switch I assume.

To explain the abillity/skill system a bit further if you have not fully yet looked into it: equipment comes with abillities which can be seen in the equipment menu. When equipping these armors, you can also immediately equip the abillity by using Abillity Points. If you want to permanently learn a certain abillity you need to wear the armor and battle until the abillity has been mastered. When the bar has been filled in the equipment menu, you retain that abillity permanently while not having to wear armor corresponding to it. However, you always will need to reserve AP (abillity points, basically putting a gem in the abillity slot) for it to have effect or be able to use it. During the course of the game when getting stronger you get more AP meaning more abillities that you have mastered can be equipped simultaneously.

Some abillities are passive -- like "Beastmaster" -- which means one automatically make more damage to beast type enemies.

So I will say this: Arigoto, Fushitsusha Fushitsusha Fushitsusha Fushitsusha !!!!!
It's the quality of a mainline FF and probably one of the best from the spinoff games. It's vastly different though so I still would not consider it as good and would focus on the main first (especially 7/8/9/10 which is almost exactly what you have :messenger_relieved::messenger_ok:). But when you are a retired senior citizen lusting for Final Fantasy and need to keep the brain active then Tactics should be one of your first choices. It's a grand game with strong narrative and script but lacks certain gameplay elements like exploration.

How are the loading times when battling on the world map? XBOX version I noticed loads every battle faster after the first one in an area. I was also surprised to see that the music glitch had not been patched. Switch version does not have the music glitch right? Basically it should continue playing the music track from where it was before battles. Switch version really seems great and stable along with being able to play portable. Another win there.
Agreed. I hope someone from Intelligent Systems holds a meeting and delivers a legendary speech to get that series back on track. Too much charm to not invest in what made the Paper Mario series great in the first place
Taro Kudo is one of my favorite game designers. He (co-)directed the last 3 Paper Mario games and was involved with Squaresoft and Mario RPG. Origami King was disappointing because it was way too similar to Color Splash while being worse because it felt so derivative. Look at the bizarre Tingle RPGs on the Nintendo DS he (co-)directed and then imagine what could be done.

Love the sadness of FFX. It really is quite melancholic despite being one of the most warm and colorful worlds like FFIX. You haven't spoiled much depending on, as the whole journey itself (pilgrimage rather) and experiencing it is so important to the ending.

Here's what you get when being prompted to change disc on Playstation 1 after the CGI cutscene with Kuja and Beatrix beating the team. Shows subtly a little of what to come. Oh that's right, there is a great weapon there for Vivi too, I always forget about it and Stiltzkin because the Mythril Spear steals all the attention thunder.

I agree with that, the feeling of knowing there is so much content within the game that there is a high likelihood that you you will miss like ~10% or maybe even more of it, that is what makes these worlds so wonderful to explore. I haven't played a game like this since like 2003, so the entire experience is much appreciated and refreshing; to see creativity expressed in these ways through gaming. Which basically ensures ITT that I'll be rambling on for ages each time I get a chance to play lol. And the One Piece character I was thinking of naming Garnet after appears briefly within the span of 140-150 episodes. At least once there, and twice before the time skip

Blank seems like a sharp character. He nonchalantly took on the alias of Alleyway Jack and completely tricked me when I was playing as Vivi. I guess that's a testament to his great character, him being an actor and all...It sort of felt like he was just going flow so Vivi or anybody else around in the bar wouldn't question him though. He got me. But maybe there will be another chance to see Alleyway Jack, the real one, at some other time. Now I'm curious lol, judging by your last post he seems like he might be a character fans wouldn't want to miss out on meeting

Black Waltz killed me once, but I adapted well and came back to finish him off the next time. It's the later bosses that I figure will be the ones to start annihilating the crew despite best efforts going into the such battles. This game will probably be fine, I think, but I'm sure that there will be a Final Fantasy game that will have insane difficulty that requires so much skill and precision to come out alive in some of the more trying battles. I get the feeling that FFVI, FFX, and FFXIV will have the toughest battles. But going back to the ATB system, I put the battle speed at its highest (there are three levels, slow, medium, and fast) and I like the camera angles in battle even though they take up time so I'll keep them on for a ways. It allows the player to get different looks at the enemies and the protagonists so I'm sure it might come in handy at least once. If not, I like seeing what how the protagonists are moving during battle, at the very least haha. I think it can be a nice feature in future FF games; seeing certain movements in battle that the main characters might make use of. Oh yeah, in the ice Cavern I got that item, but I think I might have missed one treasure chest iirc, but the Mage Masher sounds familiar so I must have found it

And a personal question for anyone reading,

When or at what point in the game do you think you were truly amazed with FFIX?

That question mainly being for the fans who love this game and speak highly of it. A lot of people probably played this game within the span of a year or two after its release, so I'm curious to see how many loved the game from the very start, the middle, or maybe end of the game. Because sometimes a game doesn't hit you with that feeling of "Wow this game is truly something to behold" until it's over and a flash of emotion overcomes you. I imagine a lot of players who played FFIX when they were young might have had an experience like that

For me it was when I first fought against Black Waltz. The puzzle like boss and removal of all but one party member was so cool and a fantastic character moment early on for me. It’s what got me hooked and it never let go.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles both seem like excellent games, but since I play games at a snail’s pace it might be years until I get around to them. You’re talking to the one who took ~ 14 months to complete Resident Evil Code: Veronica X hahaha. But you’re right, FFVII and FFVIII are most likely next. Playing the games completely out of order might be an option as well, but we’ll see. Playing the PS1 classics is a priority

At some points, lately especially, the loading times have been absolutely horrendous. I think it might have to do with me turning off battle camera where it shows the landscape around the enemies and Zidane’s crew as well. One time, I swear, the load time was like 5-8 seconds and the screen was black. The music ceased to play for a moment too until it loaded enough as well. I thought the game froze on three occasions at least, but it was just that the loading times were abnormally slow if not glitched. I don’t care that it’s like this, but others might have an issue with this. As long as the game doesn’t freeze and glitch out on me (looking at you, Resident Evil Zero! Fuck!!!!!) then I’m good. Sometimes the battle loading time will be lengthy and there will be a black screen for a couple to few seconds, and then there are those instances where it’s like “damn, did it freeze?” cuz it was taking that long to process and load the battle. But I’ve only noticed the issues taking place maybe five hours prior to where I am at now, I’ll try to keep tabs on it closely from here on out and report back with any technical issues experienced. I’ll also pay attention to the music glitch you asked about and report on that soon

Taro Kudo is the director, in so much as I am concerned. The writing carried Paper Mario: The Origami King to such a degree that I was both shocked and annoyed that it was so great but the others didn’t pull their weight. If not for Taro Kudo, that game would have been a major disappointment in my book. I was really upset with the lack of depth in that game, they should have corrected that long ago

And if the Switch can play DS games one day, I’ll gladly give those Tingle games a go. Maybe one day Tingle gets into Smash 💅

Or maybe one day, Tingle even accomplishes world peace for us all 💅

It looks like there’s at least one prominent dragon that we’ll be taking on, as well as a confrontation with Kuja I’ll assume... The dragon near the grotto will be the warm up. I’ll begin to establish my squad’s strength in battle plus abilities from here on out
For me it was when I first fought against Black Waltz. The puzzle like boss and removal of all but one party member was so cool and a fantastic character moment early on for me. It’s what got me hooked and it never let go.

Black Waltz was the fight in which it dawned on me that the Boss Battle Theme is godly. There was another fight later on that brought this notion fully to my attention as well; brought the theme to its height imo and made perfect use of it. Was in the heat of battle, Zidane, Vivi, Freya, Quina all struggling and putting their all in to overcome, yet backs were against the wall - then the track was heard blazing in the background (in my case, while Vivi delivered a spell straight to the enemy) encapsulating the moment, like you’re truly in the moment / the zone in the heat of battle while your lives are clearly on the line. But the only thing that matters is the focus required mid-battle. The track was heard loud and clear but at the same time was put on the back burner momentarily b/c my mind was in a frenzy during these battles in an effort to prevail. I feel like the boss battle theme is stellar and should probably be remixed in another FF game (hopefully it is)

Going back to Black Waltz, that was a great defining moment. I’m still wondering how Zidane managed to wake while the rest were fast asleep. That bell must have some great significance in the story, but I wonder why Black Waltz had one? What makes that particular fight to me is, that Zidane must’ve slept for a while because Black Waltz claimed he should have been dead by now. So there he is, nearly frozen to death, just woke up from slumber, and finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his crew; who all sleep helplessly in the extreme blizzard. To make matters worse, the fight turns 2v1 very quickly, Black Waltz summoning the Ice Giant, Sealion early during battle. A must win battle that shines much light upon Zidane’s character. I had my doubts about Zidane initially, and I was surprised to realize that he was likely going to be the character holding the attention of the spotlight going forward (in the beginning), but he is a true warrior and ally. Zidane erased all doubt a while ago

I really need to replay this game one day. I have beaten it only once (when it came out) and i don't remember almost anything about it. I do remember that it looked very beautiful though (much better than FFVIII which i never liked) and how colorful and charming the towns looked.

Brainstorm-like post:

Tetra Master is a lot of fun. I like this aspect of the game. When you want to put the story on hold, just take a breather, this is a great option to have. Also enjoying how so many people seem to love playing cards all over these kingdoms. Even during the worst of times some will play a game with you. I was in the thick of it at the new city (one with the Sandstorm that has protected its inhabitants for 1,000 years) and when the Black Mages and Alexandrian Soldiers were invading the place, I went up to the guest house where you can rest for 100 Gil and saw that one of the kids at least was still willing to play cards. Or maybe this was right before the attack, when the Sandstorm dissipated? But the kid's tone was like he was in a little bit of disbelief that I wanted to play at a time like this whereas before when things were fine I think this was the same kid who was telling me he loves playing cards. I thought that was excellent writing and attention to detail

Cleyra was a nice little settlement. I like how dance was an integral part of their lifestyle and how they did things. One character even commented on how their dance differs from that of Burmecia's and that Cleyra's evokes more power through their dance. Burmecia was said to have taken more towards the art of war in comparison

Kuja is still enigmatic at this point, I can't really read him (leaning more towards Kuja being a guy now but still not entirely sure) but I know he has very strong influence on the Queen. I've noticed that Kuja has corrupted the Queen entirely, unless she is under some kind of spell. Power and greed has completely overcome her. During that cutscene when Cleyra was obliterated her look said it all. She's not even in control of herself, it's like she's a slave to Kuja's will at this point despite seemingly being left with her own wits (not under a spell) ....It's a guess, but I think Kuja might have just used his cunning, only his mind, to deceive the Queen. And now she's responsible for all this turmoil between all the land. It's obviously because of Kuja at this point, even though really, up to this point, he's on;y offered his Black Mages and his knowledge to steer her towards destructive ways...

Didn't see this coming, that Puck is a prince lol but it's a lot more fun and interesting knowing this. At first, I could have sworn he was just an unfortunate young orphan rat who lived in the streets, didn't let it bother him and was trying to enjoy the fruits of life his way and only his way. But it turns out he's royalty and lives as if status and all his worldly wealth are not a part of him or who he is. Great character. And this makes the scene with him and Vivi that much greater. In general, Puck is a favorite character of mine. I think another great character is Baku. And Doctor Tot is very interesting as well, one of the greats

When it comes to battling in the overworld, I'm loving the fact that I can do so much to further my crew's standing against greater foes that will present themselves later. I'm not yet halfway into the game, but I think the Dragons near Gizamaluke's Grotto on that one plateau is becoming close a match I can soon take on. My best characters are level 20 right now and I've spent a lot of time learning the ATB system and fighting all over the place. Earning new cards in battle is great. Love seeing when a card is won through battle. Not that I'll put it to good use though, my Tetra Master skills still suck but am definitely getting better little by little. The record is somewhere around 7W/17L/3D

Flan cards = Energy cards (Pokemon)

Treno = favorite city currently. It could be fun to create some kind of topic purely about all the cities, towns, kingdoms in FFIX, it's a possibility after finishing the game

Just saw the girl and the that odd red headed assassin. I cannot tell his motives yet but there is something on his mind other than taking a job from the Queen. Things are taking shape. The story kind of exploded right at the 30% mark I would guess, and now this all very exciting. I can't wait to operate with the full party for any amount of time. Having 8 players to control in battle will mean there is lot more still to be experienced in battle and it will definitely enrich the story I can imagine

Chocobo Hot and Cold is still a lot of fun but man oh man is that going to take a ton of time. Back in the day, I can see kids probably spending entire afternoons grinding during that minigame until they reached 10,000 pts. Probably did that for hours and then rushed through homework before it's due the next day

Strangest occurrence in the game was when I battled a friendly Squirrel, who then told me to say hello to Mr. Ghost, who told me to say hello to Mrs. Lady Bug lol. 0/2 in the quiz questions she has given

Spent so much gil before leaving Lindblum. Spent on weapons and armor; anything that can be equipped. About 50,000 gil on items for synthesizing in the furure, as well as synthesized items, from the son of the blacksmith
whose father had burned his hands fighting off the Black Mages during the invasion. After Cleyra was obliterated, I figured it’s probably worth the investment in case there is no way to reach such items again. Seems like there will be more abuse to come under Queen Brahne and the likelihood of another kingdom getting wiped off the map is kind of high if not inevitable at this stage. She’s showing no mercy

I will now invite two random posters that may or may not have played FFIX before and ask them this question: Would you go skinny dipping with Queen Brahne Raza Alexandros XVI in a tepid lake if the opportunity presented itself?

Lol I have never seen nobody important post anywhere but politics. Interested to see his reply!

also, with chocobo hot and cold, don’t be afraid to turn on the speed and movement increase cheats (I don’t know if the version you’re playing has them). The part where you have to smash your chocobos face into the ground over and over searching for chocographs takes FOREEEEEVEERRRR. In fact, it takes way too long and feels too much like time filler if you ask me. It was so much more enjoyable when I turned to cheats on (just for that part!..... and it still took a long time!).

the part where you’re actually out in the overworld searching for the spots to dig I did without the cheats tho. That part was the most fun and made the chocobo mini game really great.

whatever you decide to do, good luck! Finding those chocographs is time consuming but the rewards are worth it.

He once came into a basketball thread and I was like wtf, got him in a head lock and asked him what the password was. Jk but I have seen bro post elsewhere. Final Fantasy IX is more important than Politics so we’re going there

Definitely. It soon became apparent that the Chocobo Hot and Cold game was meant to last the devoted players well over the span of months back in 2000, probably until FFX came out. With or without the cheat, it’s at least going to take a few weeks to reach the better prizes. Wing Edge isn’t too bad sitting at 3,500 pts but Protect Ring at 8,000 pts and Robe of Lords at 10,000 is the ultimate prize. Practically out of reach for most without the speed up option I’d imagine. Having Choco as an ally and means of transportation is excellent. This guy puts in work and makes the overworld even better. I found about four treasure chests already and you’re right, some really good items in there

What would you say is a better between the Protect Ring and the Robe of Lords? I’m thinking I’ll grab the Wing Edge first... and then go for one more push for a second item. I personally like both the minigame and the sidequest a lot

Outer Continent started off well. The dwarves in Conde Petie and the black mages hidden in Black Mage Village. And Eiko's a much better character than I had anticipated

This story FFIX tells is very tragic. Vivi getting closer to the truth has been somewhat heartbreaking to watch. Him being so young, I don't think he has totally come to the conclusion that he was possibly created by Kuja yet? But I also cannot make that claim with any certainty, it's only a guess at this point. Even though Kuja is a very evil man and possibly a malevolent deity of sorts, he did bring into the world precious life with will of its own. This a very complicated thing to think about. The themes found within the story are all very complex and lately it’s been solemn with events unfolding the way they have. And I take back what I said earlier, Rusty is the man! I miss that guy and want him back with the team ASAP! Currently I’m excited about Eiko joining us and making everything a lot more interesting; her character is excellent. Strong willed, very capable, will stick very closely to Zidane and probably be an incredible asset to the team and our cause overall, even despite her age...She’s already the leader of her pack, the Moogles she lived with. I will guess that Eiko brings the magic users up eventially; Garnet will learn from her and that is going to be huge. Maybe she can regain what was stolen from her by Kuja and Brahne, ultimately...

I also anticipate Steiner coming back a bit stronger after having battled beside Beatrix and Freya in the heat of rebellion at Alexandria. His change of heart regarding the Queen and her motives, and deciding to rebel is exactly what I wanted to see. And I love how Beatrix was quick to question the Queen’s decisions and firmly stand against her as well, in order to protect the princess and Alexandria the Queen has to be brought down. She’s nothing but a wicked tyrant now; devoid of any trace of humanity. It’s completely gone now that I can see
This the suspect, chief?
Basically the Wilt Chamberlain of squirrels. The one in FFIX is Mrs. Doubtfire in comparison

Love reading the impressions and you're progressing through the game at a surprising pace in comparison to Code Veronica/Zero, keep them coming! Soon nearing the end of disc 2. That whole Alexandria escape sequence is pretty sweet and high tension. Freya and Beatrix joining forces then Steiner feeling bad about leaving them and thus trusting Zidane fully to keep Garnet safe, lots of development there. Got to give credits to the animations too, makes the maps feel less static and the game more dynamic as a whole (like the turning platforms and Freya jumping down the spiral staircase, it's simply cool). I haven't played the game in a long time, just had to look up some of the stuff again. And man, the ending, it still wrecked me.

Bravo Squaresoft.

How about that Fossil Roo though? Never disliked it but with all the levers, riding and random encounters exploration is a bitch in that place :messenger_tears_of_joy:
