Have Nintendo ever dominated a single market like this before?
Japan is all mobile nowadays and i wouldn’t be surprised if use of the switch as a handheld over there dominates home console use. To my knowledge Sony actually has some of the highest grossing mobile games in Japan too. So it seems like people are just increasingly less looking for home console experiences in Japan and Sony already compensated for that.

They abandoned Vita and went mobile..

DAMN.

How have fanboys not noticed this yet? I hope Jim doesn't get shit for this as well.

When a market is fundamentally digital (such as JPN) but there is a clear advantage to have the physical version of the Nintendo games (due to storage limitations), the game sales numbers end up close to meaningless. Impossible to draw any other conclusion than that Nintendo is doing great.

Crazy to see Sony just giving up on Japan.
Playstation is, not Sony. Sony Music is killing it there.
They be releasing games on Switch.

A subsidiary of Sony Music, Aniplex has the 6th highest grossing mobile game of all time. Making it Sony‘s most successful game.
idk how Sony feels about Playstation in Japan, when Sony Music Japan makes more more with one game.

The main thing to keep in mind with PlayStation's software sales problems during the last 6 months is third party performance. With only 6% of new Third Party game software sales in the past 6 months being on the PlayStation ecosystem - this has gotta be ringing alerm bells for certain studios that don't have a multiplat strategy. Compare this to PS3/PS4 cross-gen exclusives last gen:

Top 15 PlayStation Ecosystem Games 2014
  1. [PS3/PS4] Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (Konami) - 413.174
  2. [PS3/PS4] Yakuza: Ishin! (Sega) - 385.137
  3. [PS3] Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. Full Boost (Bandai Namco) - 372.827
  4. [PS3] Dark Souls II (From Software) - 339.592
  5. [PS3/PS4] Samurai Warriors 4 (Koei Tecmo) - 275.318
  6. [PS3/PS4] Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Square Enix) - 272.477
  7. [PS3] Sengoku Basara 4 (Capcom) - 234.995
  8. [PS3/PS4] Winning Eleven 2015 (Konami) - 227.718
  9. [PS3] 3rd Super Robot Wars Z: Jigoku-Hen (Bandai Namco) - 209.892
  10. [PS3] J-Stars Victory Vs (Bandai Namco) - 185.996
  11. [PS3/PS4] Watch Dogs (Ubisoft) - 177.852
  12. [PS3/PS4] The Evil Within (Bethesda) - 168.404
  13. [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD II.5 ReMIX (Square Enix) - 161.663
  14. [PS3] Pro Baseball Spirits 2014 (Konami) - 133.927
  15. [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2014 (Konami) - 132.841
TOTAL: 3.791.813

Upcoming Titles PlayStation 4/5
  • 04.23.21 Judgement (Sega)
  • 05.07.21 Resident Evil: Village (Capcom)
  • 06.10.21 Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade (Square Enix)
  • 06.11.21 Guilty Gear - Strive (Arc System Works)
  • 06.24.21 Scarlet Nexus (Bandai Namco)
  • 07.22.21 Utawareromono: Zan 2 (Aquaplus)
Overall I'm hard-pressed at the moment to even think PlayStation ecosystem will surpass 1 million software this year; there needs to be a lot more reveals in the coming months because the summer line-up is dire. Also games that allow for Japanese consumers to purchase a second hand copy and download DLC like FFVII Remake: Intergrade won't move the needle. In terms of pre-orders Resident Evil: Village is tracking way behind Resident Evil VII.
even if Resident Evil: Village somehow manages 250K across the PS4/PS5 that would be a worse performance than Ground Zeroes, Yakuza: Ishin!, Extreme Vs. Full Boost, Dark Souls II, Samurai Warriors 4, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
There is also Nier Replicant launching on the 23 in April, but currently no PS5 version.. at the moment I think that's a game that can surpass 150K, this year(could be more if I was sure that Square will under supply physical version).

When you look at The Top selling third party game of 2021 at the moment on the PS4/PS5 is Little Nightmares 2 with somewhere between 25-30K copies... as a Third Party publishers the situation for PlayStation is very different than the outlook in 2014.

Wait, didn’t people say that PS5 is record breaking sales in Japan? Is this the record for the lowest selling PlayStation ever in Japan or what is that supposed to mean?

HW Sales have increased dramatically, at the same time Ps4 was selling 6K, Ps5 broke 60K last week.

Software wise is a dire situation Physical wise.

Ps5 might end up selling like Ps3 there but might have the worst SW performance of all time compared to previous Playstation.

Of course half the market has likely shifted to digital but still, sad to see.

Why didn't Nintendo "followed" the market?

It's more like market followed where the games were going.

Can you imagine numbers it would have done if it had heavy hitters like Final Fantasy 7 remake or Monster Hunter World.
They did? They put a console out that doubles as a handheld. Are you unaware of what the switch does?

You can't have bad sales if you don't have any.

Seriously tho, the whole Japan situation and Sony/MS claiming every single week how much that market means to them reminds me of an interview with Jordan Belfort (the infamous Wolf of Wall Street):

"I don't want to sell someone a pen who doesn't need pen" - just let it go already, Japan is not interested in home consoles anymore, at all, AT ALL. Shift that effort onto markets like US or EU instead where people are ready to kill for your console. For real, they're shipping their consoles on a market that doesn't want them instead of supplying the markets where they sell out completely 10min. after they're available...

Do you really think there are PS5s rotting on the shelves in Japan? They sell out just as quickly over there as they do anywhere else.

Japan isn't as digital as other markets. Partially because the games there are so expensive that people want to finish them and sell used copy to get back part of the cost.
Source, please?

I highly doubt it because on average their houses are very small and compared to the other main countries is the one where they made the biggest switch by far from consoles to mobile (a 100% digital market).

Totally meaningless numbers without digital sales.
In addition to this, the physical sales also miss the sales of lots of games not included in the rankings.
And to put all these numbers into context, we have to consider the current % of the global console market revenue that Japan currently has. Which isn't as big as it was in the past.

This is nuts. I think it's because the PS5 looks like a Boeing 747. The only big things tolerated in Japan is anime tiddies, Gundams and Sumo Wrestlers.
