Upgrading from PS4 to PS5 is worse than upgrading a PC

ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
The upgrade path from the PS4 to PS5 is a mess and worse than upgrading a PC.

For PC, its just a matter of opening the case and replacing the component. After that everything works. Your save files are intact, no need to reinstall games, all your controllers still works. Just launch the game, tune up the setting and you get to enjoy the improved fidelity. Want to use a DualShock 4 on Godfall? Sure you can do that, on PC but not PS5.

On PS5, cross-gen games are split into 2 versions (PS4/PS5) and offer for you to download for no reason. Why will I want to play a PS4 version on PS5? You can't use a DS4 on PS5 games, but you can use remote play to use DS4 on PS5 games. You can turn off the extra features on DualSense and turn it into a DS4 (in terms of features) and use on PS5 games. If you upgrade to a PS5 you can't carry your digital library on classic platforms (PS1, PS2 classics etc) over to PS5. Some games cost extra if you want both PS4 and PS5 version. Some games doesn't carry save over from PS4 to PS5. Some cross-gen games doesn't even allow next-gen upgrade. Like you have to google everytime to see if your games have which upgrade issue. You have Overcooked All You Can Eat with 4 DS4 on the PS4 for 4 players co-op. You want to play the same game with PS5 fidelity? Well you'll have to spend $200+ for 3 additional DualSense if you want 4 players co-op here again.

Its embarrassing considering we are in 2021 here and still dealing with these mess.

How did you upgrade from ps3 to ps4?
This gen, the transition from previous gen to next gen is much smoother, in the history of Playstation. I agree they need to up their games in the BC department. I wish they invest more on BC rather than porting shits to PC.

What time is it?
Overcooked is on the PC so turn in your PC Master Race membership card you console peasant.

The PS5 OS came in hot and it is still a hot mess from a functionality standpoint. Part of the reason you are going to want to have access to both the PS4/PS5 versions of games is because of how poor the save management is. If you don't have your PS4 hooked up any longer or don't have access to it all together, games like NIOH 2, Spider Man and Tony Hawk require you to boot the PS4 game to export your save file so the PS5 game can import it.

Can't you just use plus?

You can backup save files to USB for PS4 version of the game, but not for the PS5 version of the game. This is beneficial for those who don't want to pay for Playstation+ in order to have cloud saves.

On PS5, cross-gen games are split into 2 versions (PS4/PS5) and offer for you to download for no reason.

They are split into 2 versions because the PS Store is integrated with the OS this time. Also, while there were some issues, they have been fixed and there shouldn't be any problems to prioritize PS5 version on PS5. Not an issue.

You can't use a DS4 on PS5 games, but you can use remote play to use DS4 on PS5 games.

So you are complaining about playing PS4 games on PS5 (who would want that?) but you want to use the DS4 on PS5 games? Every time since the NES, every new console use their own new controllers. I don't see the issue. Why would you expect any different now? Because you don't want to spend money?

If you upgrade to a PS5 you can't carry your digital library on classic platforms (PS1, PS2 classics etc) over to PS5.

If PS1, PS2 classics, etc are not supported, and Sony has stated that since the announcement of the PS5, why would you expect it? and get disappointed about it? That one is your fault.

Some games cost extra if you want both PS4 and PS5 version

So you expect every PS5 upgrade to be free? Just because? Also, is up to developers, not Sony.

Some games doesn't carry save over from PS4 to PS5.

Again, every new console since the SNES have used a new controller. Why would you expect to use a PS5 version (not BC) of a game to work with old controllers? Want to use DS4? use the PS4 version through BC. Not an issue.

Personally, I can't believe we live in an age where people complain about things that have worked perfectly for years, but somehow they are not ok with it now? Why? I get changing something that worked to something that doesn't, or remove feature that was great, or stuff like that, but the other way around and complain that something works the same way for years? That is weird.

Seriously? That's your take? Comparing it to something of 2013?

Do it right and compare it to the competition of today.

Took me 30 minutes to set up the PS5 (installation, setup and begin downloading games)
Selecting the PS5 version is easy when you know where to click.
Why would anyone want both PS4 an PS5 versions of the same game on the console instead of only the better one? That is s waste of SDD space too.
Half of OP’s brabbling makes no sense.

I'm pretty pissed to find out my Nintendo Switch games don't work on the PS5. They should be cross compatible since they are both Japanese platforms. Am sure not serious, all my sarcasm belong to us, etc.

For the saves? No. PS5 games can't read PS4 saves. Each game has to implement an export function that is separate from your plus saves.
You sure about that? Maybe I'm lucky but every game I have played my save carried over. I guess I'm just lucky.

I've not had a PS5 (native app) version read any PS4 game save I've spent any significant time with. Playing a PS4 Game on PS5 reads the save files fine. Playing the PS5 version of that same game does not. Spider Man, NIOH 2 and THPS all took booting the PS4 Game, selecting the export option and then booting the PS5 Game.

Oh, I misunderstood your post. I thought you meant PS4 games on ps5.

I could try with fenyx. I got both versions when I bought the ps5 one. Not sure if that qualifies.

I guess it all really depends on the nitty gritty details of what's on the PS4 when wanting to transfer.

If it looks like a situation that won't work out, it may just be best to have both consoles. As silly as that may sound.

If you're wanting to play various games, but don't want to buy multiple DS5s. It's probably the best route to go.

Ask me about my Stream Deck
I just put my ps5 on my home network and it was a matter of checking/unchecking boxes for content to be copied to my ps5 from my ps4pro. Ps4 to ps4pro was pretty much the same.

I'm not saying pc is hard, but OP did gloss over the need to fiddle with drivers and some of the other configuration that desktop software sometimes requires. OP also didn't go into detail about what parts were changed. Considering it's a whole new rig when you get a new console it's actually pretty easy.

How easy is it to upgrade your pc when your changing the case, fans/cooling, motherboard, cpu, ssd/hdd, cables, heatsinks, psu, gpu, ram and OS all at the same time?

It was fun, hooked my PS4 Pro and the PS5 on the network used the export tool that took nearly 3 hours to complete. Job done.

Whereas the Xbox Series X took me 15 minutes to setup due to multiple accounts. No worries about save games as they were downloaded on the fly.

Good job, Sony.

Sony‘s backup tools have always been shit slow. I remember transferring data between PS3s once and it took TWELVE HOURS.

You could probably make some pretty good money from your PS5 right now. Then you could probably be about half-way toward an easy GPU upgrade.

In 15 minutes XSX downloaded all your games (from MS’s LIVE servers in this case) and installed them 🤨? Not sure you are comparing like for like there mate.

I *think* all cross gen games require the same method. Xbox is way ahead of the game in this regard.
Agreed, quite shocking as a lot of these games were patched / tested for PS5 compatibility a long time before it came out. This should have been automated… it is quite shit and screams of MVP “what is really bothering people vs gamers that transfer saves are savvy enough and/or will suck it up”…

When my Series X arrived I simply took the external drives from my One X and plugged them in to the new console. Transferred a few games to the internal SSD to take advantage of that feature. All my saves were ready to go.

Took me less than 15 minutes.

If you or RobRSG RobRSG had the PS4 games backed up to an external HDD you should have been able to plug it to the PS5 and PS+ would have taken care of cloud saves.

The network transfer function is needed when you have neither of that setup (it would not be as fast on the XSX if you did not have the games on the external disk which for me has to be reconnected everytime I wake it from sleep or the XSX will not find it…).
Also, cheap Ethernet cable connecting the two would have sped up the entire process on PS5 or comparing like for like and having games on an external HDD for PS4 already like you had for your XOX.

I put all my games on an external before disconnecting my One X, hooked up Series X, and it seemed ready to go right away. There was an initial systems update, then it took me to the home screen which is snappier than One X.

Hooked up my HDD which it recognized right away and transferred maybe 5-6 games to SSD, and there were a bunch of Series X game updates.

After all of the above, probably took an hour including the initial console update.

Yup. All saves ready to go. I couldn't believe that when I booted up Skyrim (looks incredible with mods and 4k/60), it showed my last save files from 2018. And holy shit was I a save scummer. There must had been 150 save files, which my latest file said was about #400. LOL. After I played a ton, I deleted all of them except my last 20 files. lol

It is terrible anyway.

It should be as simple as the XSX is.

That’s the gold standard.

Handling of cross generation saves on XSX is better, hands down… but your 3 hours vs 15 minutes is either user error (you did not know how to do it faster on PS5) or not comparing like for like… or a mix of both.

You could do the same going from PS4 to PS5 (using an external HDD)… saves included (PS+) if you were not talking about the PS5 version of the PS4 game (think Spider-Man remastered).

If needing to have an external drive to make sure my saves are transferred to the PS5 is user error, then that’s my error. Sorry everyone.

Come on man, quit defending this shit.

No, you do not need to save to an external HDD to transfer the saves over for PS4 games on a PS4 to PS4 games played on a PS5. PS+ cloud saves take care of that.

I am not defending their PS4 to PS5 remasters lack of automated saves importing (save has to be exported by the PS4 game to the cloud and then imported by the PS5 game from the cloud again), but just being accurate even if it does not jive with your 15 minutes vs 3 hours hyperbole 🤷‍♂️.
