PC gaming can really be infuriating.....

A good practice is to check PC gaming wiki before playing/buying a game. So you are aware of the workarounds with any game. PC gaming is awesome! Been playing BoTW at 3440x1440 with a lowly fx 6300 and an RX580 that's barely breaking a sweat. I doubt even the Switch pro will be able to do that.

PC is annoying, but that's the negative of the platform. I'm playing a(single player) game alongside my wife right now, 2 copies, she's on switch and I'm on pc. Her game looks like shit but runs great/never crashes and she can instantly go to sleep mode, my game looks amazing but crashes if I unplug my headphones or try to alt-tab and of course I can't leave my chair and play elsewhere. There's also the price of entry of $360 for the switch version vs $1,410 for my pc version... but hey there's an xbox series X+ built into my pc..

Life is a balance.

Nah PC gaming is fine. OP is just a bit inept. I have 76 games installed on my PC right now. The only one I did any kind of tweaking for was OG Doom 3, where I spent one minute editing an INI file to add a custom resolution.

To be fair EA did you a real favor not letting you activate Alice, Madness Returns. It's hands down one of the worst games I've ever played, and I've played Persona 5. It starts off well. It looks purty and everything but it doesn't take too long before you realize that it controls like shit, there's no real change in gameplay and it's so badly designed every death feels cheap as fuck. It's the only game, apart from Persona 5, that I've hate finished. I refused to let the cheap bosses, shitty physics and bad levels beat me. The guy who developed it should be forced to watch Persona 5's cut scenes for the rest of his life

PC gaming can get a little funky, especially with older titles that where intended for things like Windows 95 or even DOS, doubly so if there from a foreign region like Japan as the folder are divided by ¥ instead /, so C:¥programs¥games and can throw regular windows for a loop if the region is not set correctly prior to launching the program on older titles.

The most common problem I find is that a game tries to launch a video for a company logo or just the game's intro as soon as it boots. However its using an older video codec that windows no longer supports and comes preinstalled with like years past, resulting in the game booting to black screen and then instantly closing to desktop. So if you are playing older games make sure to download something like the K-Lite codec pack to resolve these issues.

Its something you get used too, essentially it's like asking a playstation 5 to play a PSX game, times move on as do the software that supports gaming titles. It's why the Xbox series S and X are so impressive in regards to backwards compatability.

You are always going to have problems running 10+ year old games on a new PC. I had a conversation with my brother yesterday about playing older games on any system and how hard it is. With PS3 shutting down the store, many of these digital games will be hard if not impossible to enjoy in 10 or more years. Compare that to my N64 where I pop in a cartridge and it starts right up like it did over 20 years ago.

Did you ever ask yourself back in the day if you could play 10+ year old games on your N64 though? Because i'm pretty sure it's not compatible with SNES games.

Anyway, 10+ year old games are not even an issue on PC. Even older DOS games are usually fine if you use DosBOX. The problematic era, with the most incompatible games for a modern PC, is the Windows 95/Windows 98 era, right after they dropped DOS support. Windows XP era and later is usually not an issue. That's a lot of generations (console speaking) of backwards compatibility. You cover most of the games that got released since the PS2/GC/XBOX era. And that's without even considering emulation of systems outside PCs.

I don't have any issues with PC gaming. If anything, console is way more annoying.

Went to play Seige with a friend on PS4 the other day. 1gb update patch. Downloaded in about 2 mins, took an hour to "copy". Thanks Sony.

It’s just not worth it

i always feel sorry when i see coments like these. Because i know thats a person who fancies himself a gamer, yet missed out on the platform that always had the best games, that forged nearly every genre we play today and has the best inputs to play games. I know that person is a gamer who barelly scratched the surface of gaming. Damn shame

Lupin3

And it can be absolutely glorious. All that raw, silent power! All those games, mods, trainers and applications. Every time is sexy time.

But the type of things in this thread dont happen in a way that is statistically significant. This thread is either lying, exagerrating or he's the unluckiest son of a bitch in the world. Imagine trying in a single day games going from today all the way to 15 years ago, and having problems with all of them. Right on que to make a thread on neogaf about the troubles of pc gaming. Im sure its not that though, and the OP definitely had these issues. He just felt like playing a racing game, 16 year old rpg Jade Empire and 7 year old Sunset Overdrive in the same day. Trully unlucky.

How Pc gaming actually works, now, 10 years ago, 20 years ago and 30 years ago is that you click install on steam and play the game. Thats it. Thats how you did it 10 years ago. And 20 years ago you just placed the disks in the optical drive and install it. Thats what you did 30 years ago in the dos times. You can even watch a channel like LGR, he just takes his big box of a pc game, installs it normally into his era correct computer and starts the game. Theres no tinkering involved.

9 out of 10 games run perfectly for me out of the box. Then there's that 1 out of 10 game where I do have to tweak it a bit. 100% worth it.

I'm still waiting for a thread made like this where the person making the post whining doesn't just come across as a clueless ass with an agenda.

I swear the only time I ever have to tweak, is when I'm doing things my console isn't capable of (like 120hz gsync in 4k).

im speaking from personal experience. i had sooooo many issues every time i tried to play a game on PC. i was patient at first and did my best to figure it out, sometimes i did, but i eventually just gave up on PC all together.

it almost never "just works" on PC. but it always did on console. so i switched and its been great! its a no brainer for someone easily entertained, such as myself. i dont need the best, or the latest and greatest. i just want to buy the thing, turn it on and go. if i had that experience on PC when i was a PC gamer, i'd never have switched to console. but i had that experience nearly every time, and it just wasnt worth the frustration anymore.

im happy for you and other PC people. that shit is too complicated for me. call me dumb i guess. i really dont care its just video games

I've primarily played on consoles for almost all my life, but in the last year and a half I've spent most of my time playing on PC.
There's definitely more tinkering involved, just from the top of my head I did have the same "corrupted save" issue in Sunset Overdrive, Metal Gear Rising does have this weird issue where it locks to 24fps if you are outputting through HDMI, DOOM eternal had these weird black flashes and Thronebreaker did have this weird issue where the cammera would be stuttery despite the gaming running at locked 60fps.

While it's nice going back to consoles from time to time and getting that "it just works" feeling. I just see these small issues on PC as a "necessary evil" that comes from the open nature of the platform. With so many possible hardware configurations there's bound to be more issues than with games designed for a specific locked piece of hardware.
In return you get way more customization option on both your software AND hardware, instant backwards compatibility with literally thousands of games going back decades, more storefronts to choose from which radically reduces prices, free multiplayer, mods, emulators, better performance (if you get the hardware for it), etc.

And, to be fair, most of the issues I've encountered in this past year and a half could be solved in a couple of minutes.
The Sunset Overdrive thing, for example, was as easy as going to a specific folder and erasing a file. Took me literally 5 minutes between googling the issues and fixing it.

I think I would appreciate gaming on PC more if I didn't have access to the consoles. As it is right now, I just fire up the PS4 or Xbox Series S to play something on PS Now/Game Pass whilst buying digital titles in a Steam sale "for future use". As of now, I've barely played anything because the consoles are the easy option and I do like a good trophy.

pcgaming is less hassle than ever.

but the pcgaming golden age was pre-2005. That's when having a pc got you games consoles could only dream of. GAmes that couldn't be made on consoles. We got new pcs and vid cards to play games you couldn't play elsewhere.

Now games are made for consoles first and the pc gets the same games except with options to make them look prettier and run at a faster fps. And that's the reason to upgrade your card.

IT's changed.

Now most of the stuff made for pc first are the more grass roots, small studio, indie type games.

That's the disappointing part of the pc gaming scene today for me. From '95 to 2005, you were playing a boatload of AAA-type pc exclusives. GAmes like Doom2, Duke Nukem 3d, Delta Force, RAinbox six online in 1998, Half-Life, Civ2, Diablo2, BF42, Medal of Honor, age of empires, starcraft, warcraft 2/3, ..., thru Crysis and Wow and HL2.

Like i said, the issues that do occasionally appear are statistically insignificant. They are very rare. I dont know what or why those many problems you had were, but PC gaming is not this problem filled affair that console gamers always try to portray. Its the biggest gaming market in the world by far. All three consoles combined, ps4, xbox one and switch barelly outmatch it. If you split the term consoles into individual platforms, PC is bigger than all of them. You dont become the biggest gaming platform in the world outside of mobile by being filled with issues. My money on this thread is that OP is full of shit. He probably searched reddit or google for recent pc issues and made this thread, totally without an agenda.

Well.. when you have a completely open platform and have million ways to play and customise your gameplay experience..theres gonna be a million ways it can fuck up as well.

I'll take it anyday and everyday over the more restrictive gameplay on consoles.

I agree with what you're saying.

But at the same time the PC is now getting more console games than ever. Now the PC tends to even be getting PlayStation games eventually and certainly most Xbox games.

The divide in power is narrowed but the selection of games has increased. There has never been a time where it's been more pointless to own a console. Not saying it's pointless to own a console but the most have exclusive console games has shrunk.

25 years of PC gaming and the worst I´ve had are some crashes or fps issues in some games due to negligent ports/lazy developers, but that`s something I´ve even experienced on console.......

I've been playing mostly on PS5/Switch these past few months, but I always come back for some sweet PC gaming and this was the weekend to do so and catch up on some older games from my backlog. Boy, did this not go as planned:

Alice 2: Madness Returns
Couldn't even get past the activation phase. It requires an EA account but my Origin one doesn't work. Then it asks for the product key but it says my PC is offline before I can enter it. Looking at the steam forum I'm not alone...I'm sure there's a fix around or I could just crack it, but I kinda gave up for now, let's move on to something else....

Dragon Age 2
Surprisingly it works, but there's some sort of weird visual glitch where scenery in the distance and blood on the ground and my character disappears and reappears, pretty distracting. I thought I solved it playing with the settings but it's still there. Gotta hunt for a fix later, but all that tweaking took me out of the mood for now. Let's see what else there is to play.

American Truck Sim
The game itself works great as always but.....I installed it again after a few months and my juicy 50 hour save......is gone. I didn't bother backing it up locally because it was supposed to be on the steam cloud, but it's not......Yay. Not starting up again from scratch, let's move on.

Metal Gear Rising
What could possibly go wrong here? It seems to run great at first, yet something feels really off, the camera is very jerky. For whatever reason it caps at 59fps instead of 60. Sounds like something minor, but boy does it feel fucking annoying. Again I'm not alone looking at the steam forums. I tried locking it in Nvidia control panel with no luck, not sure I can be bothered any further, it seems to be a bug that doesn't happen to everyone, goodbye for now.

Sebastian Loeb Rally
Had tons of stuttering at first. Fixed it by disabling in-game Vsync and enabling it from nVidia control panel. Good so far, but yet another issue arises. The game seems to have problems with input devices. Half the times I start the game up, the controller doesn't work during races. Need to close the game and start it again hoping it will work this time. About 50 /50 chances I'd say. looking around, it seems you need to disable as many input devices on your PC as you can....Yeah, as if.

Jade Empire
Old release, I was expecting issues but it's much worse. The game downright doesn't start. Apparently the default .exe steam uses is wrong and you need to run it from inside the game folder from a different .exe. Whatever, I've seen worse today. Game rans at 60fps, yet it feels like 15, completely unplayable. Looking around once again, of course it's not just me. I found several fixes I had to apply to the .ini file but nothing worked for me. After an hour I gave up.

Sunset Overdrive
You can imagine I was pretty pissed at this point so I thought I'd go with a recent game with an even more recent PC port. Surely this will work? The game greets me with a screen saying my save is corrupted...yet it's my first time installing it, what save? "Let's move on" I said. Created a new save file and it runs great at 60fps maxed out and I find myself having a good time, finally. 15 minutes later it crashes. "Surely it's just a coincidence" I thought as I started it back up. Again greeted by a screen about a corrupted save, though my save is there and it works. 10 minutes later crashes again. I found an alleged fix on the steam forum, yet I don't even have the energy to try it at this point.

This isn't an exaggeration for comedic effect, this truly happened today. I've lost 5 hours of my weekend doing nothing, so you realise I had to vent. I'm not looking for fixes in the replies, I'm sure they are out there but I can't even be bothered at this point. I think the most infuriating part is thinking of people on forums like this, saying how everything just works on PC these days. SOME stuff might, but wer'e not quite there yet. I'm sure there'll be the usual "it's your PC dude the games are fine" and to be fair my gaming PC is getting pretty old, but most of the above issues are game specific as they seem to be shared by many people. There are several games I don't have any issues with, but having to roll dice every time you buy something is just wrong.

Anyway, if you made it this far into this rant thanks and I hope you had better luck than me today.
You need to have some knowledge of how computers work to play pc games but consoles are just plug and play, coming from a windows 98 pc pentium pro back in the days just trying to make a 3d game run on a pc without a video card was enough to turn anybody to an it professional, we used to flash the computer reinstall windows reinstall direct x and go online on a internet cafe downloading dll's to come back and intall on the pc just to make a game work... i even had to reverse engineer some stuff in mortal kombat 4 to force it to run on my pc by using software 3d. Nowadays its a breeze compared to bk in the days.

I "pc game" since 1997 and generally all the issues may seem "easy or non existent" to us since we grew with windows 95, dos and so on.
But pc gaming is so troublesome and ridden with issues and settings INPENETRABLE to new people that would not even notice what they are doing or why are they not using their bought gear to the fullest... some examples:
-Crashes, freezes, stutters despite good hardware while similar gear can be completely ok
-compatibility issues
-Many storefronts, launchers, regional pricing
-Cheaters. I play bf5 and it is ruined every 2nd match by someone teleporting or auto aiming
-"Untold" tips and fixes that have no reason to not be automatic like:
Why new monitors and tv's are not 120/144/240hz by default? I know many people who have no idea they were running their 144hz monitor on 60hz for years...
Or that with freesync screen You have to enable vrr in nvidia control panel and enable vsync on... since it's not doing the same thing as normal vsync then. Not to mention 141fps lock to avoid ceiling lag (for 144hz display)
-Then there are all the hardware issues and problems. I use computers my whole life and I grew to hate them despite still buying the latest gear (it's a love/hate relationship :p ) For examplke, x570 launch was a disaster. I had to exchange motherboards and install new bios every week... and only now pc boots as fast as it did on 2500k in 2012.
-Pricing. Even before pandemic/miners. 700usd gpu is a norm and it is not acceptable... Good pc was 2k usd before pandemic and now it's like 5k. I know You can spend less but the more You spend, the less problems You get.

Then, after all of this. After troubleshooting, spending thousands of dollars, researching all the gear, compatibility, watching and reading hundreds of component reviews, PC is still treated as a 2nd class citizen and get only "ports" late...

All in all - It is not hard for us. We know what we are doing and don't think about it. 3080,3700x,x570, 4k120 oled Death Stranding - It is fucking glorious. I also don't have much issues now but the pc was 2000usd (for pc alone and at msrp really)
But deep inside, I know that I've spent more time just playing on 360,ps4 and ps5 (not really much yet on ps5) and for so much cheaper, PC gaming is not worth it, especially now at all. I recommend my friends to just get xbox and gamepass.

Well, there are people that aren`t bothered by laggy 30fps low detail gameplay and then there are people with taste :messenger_winking:

But I´d agree that currently with the inflated pricing it`s a hard sell if you don`t already own a system.

As a kid, I was an Amiga gamer until my favourite games, Lucasarts Adventures, weren't coming out on it anymore and I first saw stuff like Doom. Then I switched to PC. I only ever got into consoles during the 16bit era because of Virtua Racing and Mortal Kombat 2, for which I got a Mega Drive. Then I got a Saturn because of Daytona USA and Sega Rally, Then I got a PlayStation for... everything, really. Those systems had hundreds of awesome exclusives which made me get them. Now, consoles outside of planet Nintendo get like a handful of exclusives, so there's little reason for me to use a console. I absolutely love PC gaming, and if stuff like Gran Turismo and Demon's Souls came to PC, I'd really never even think about buying a console anymore.

PC games -used- to be more for the tech inclined back in the days of setting up IRQs and DMA, mouse drivers, and making sure you had enough base memory. The first few years after 3D accelerator cards came out were a bit shitty, because stuff like OpenGL and DirectX wasn't where it is today, and you had a dozen different graphics cards manufacturers that weren't conforming to any standard, and devs had to cook up five different version of the same game to make use of the more prominent GPUs. I was mostly fine back then because I always had the latest 3Dfx card, which along with Glide quickly established itself as the de facto standard for GPUs. Then there were compatibility problems with AMD and Cyrix CPUs, but all you had to do was to avoid those and get intel chips.

Today it's really really rare that I have a PC specific problem with any game, and I'm enjoying my time in front of my PC inmensely.

Another thing that really really put me off consoles is missing backwards compatibility. I -do- want to replay ten year old games sometimes, and on PC I'll just install them and play. I have several moving boxes full of PS2 and PS3 games I'll probably never ever play again because I don't feel like having additional game systems taking up my space. But here I am playing Monkey Island after a double click.

Thats part of the problem a ps4 game will work the same on all ps4s without a hussle the same for xbox, nintendo, sega but on pc its a whole open platform with different comfigurations, hardware, software and with that comes alot of complexity, you need to be a geek to play on pc while on console you dont, even a monkey can play on console.

I don't agree that you need to be a geek to play on PC. You can literally just buy a prebuilt HP gaming PC, install Steam or the Epic Launcher and be off and running in ten minutes without deep knowledge about PCs.

Initially yes, but overtime I find console gaming extremely infuriating. Biggest problem being no mod support nor trainers. A lot of the time even the simplest thing like jump higher, run faster or no carry weight from trainers make many game so much more enjoyable to play. Games like elder scrolls/fallout which would have been near unplayable on consoles become Game of the generation tier with pc mod support. Not to mention all the exclusives I get to enjoy on PC, moba, real time strategy, simulation games crpgs, porn mods etc. I don't plan on buying any new consoles untile they at least support some trainers. I just can't forsee myself finishing an AAA game on console without any mod support.

Nope its not that easy.
why not?
When I was still working at a studio, that's exactly how systems were bought, you think there's time to build 20+ tailor made pcs?
No you walk into a store, buy a few pre-builts and install the stuff you need on them and it works; these were systems that got stressed even more because they were used as workstations to run 3dsmax and such, aside from playing/testing games.
And that was ~8 years ago on windows 7...

Not directed at OP but I don't get why people always say PC gaming is some sort of black box that's super hard to operate or get your head around.

I built my first PC in December and have literally had zero issues playing games on it. I boot the game up, spend like a minute or so tinkering with the visual settings if it's my first time, and then... play.

Maybe it's a time thing...?

It's genuinely that way for the majority of people who play on PC. But then these threads pop up and console exclusive players like to use them as an excuse to proclaim that the issues the op is having is why they always buy an immediately out dated console at launch.

PC gaming is really not that much maintenance that people make it out to be, when they start rambling about drivers and having to tweak games before they work, it's really dumb. Most of this stuff can be done by the program provided by your gpu with literally no hassle to you. Its no different than updating a game on console.

I went over the PC games I've played over the last few months to see which ones I had issues with. Surprisingly it tends to be the AAA games that cause problems. None of the indie games caused any significant problem, and I played a lot of them. So it might be more of an issue for those who play more AAA games.

Dark Souls - Had to install DSfix and mess around in ini files to play at higher resolutions and frame rates.
FFXV - Caused me a massive headache because of stuttering that could only be (mostly) fixed by installing separate software and mess around with it. Shit port.
Horizon Zero Dawn - Also caused me a lot of issues with stuttering and frame drops. Still better than playing at 30 fps on PS4 though.

Rage 2, The Division and GTA V ran without issues (except EGS not playing nice with Steam Input so I couldn't get the gyro to work). Dragon's Dogma ran fine too but the menus are... weird on PC. And like I said all indie games ran fine (like 25 of them).

You mean you dont have to make a 5000$ upgrade every week ?
You dont need to train with tibethan monks on top of a mountain for 10 years before you know how to use a computer ?
You dont have to edit ini files on an hourly basis ?
You dont need to "mess with drivers" every 10 minutes ?
You dont have problems with literally every game you try for no apparent reason ?
You dont need to fickle with settings for hours on end ?

That cant be true. Because console only gamers who dont even know how a computer looks like said its so. Isnt it better to play on consoles where nearly every game looks like it has vasseline smeared on the screen and has performance issues that you cant do jack shit about ? Surely having almost no games without performance issues and not being able to to anything about it is much better. Isnt begging devs on twitter to fix their games better than being able to do it yourself on a PC ? Im not a nasa engineer, after all, so i cant handle a computer

Well.. when you have a completely open platform and have million ways to play and customise your gameplay experience..theres gonna be a million ways it can fuck up as well.

I'll take it anyday and everyday over the more restrictive gameplay on consoles.

It is weird - I have just as much fun getting a pc game to run and then optimally, as playing the game. I guess this comes from the year’s when you had to allow a bit of time to get a game to work, but I love it.

Just yesterday, I loaded Doom to play a level and it was loading on the wrong monitor. No probs - alt-enter and move... nope. Hmm - try windows cursor left... nope. Google - ah might be in settings - it is tucked away - so I change it over.. and success!

Funnily enough console games tend to just work, but it is just not as much fun for me in some ways. I mean... you can’t get excited about having a mouse mat that syncs in colour to the mouse. Also - isn’t it great looking at a new game for £30 and then jumping on cd keys site and getting it for a tenner - compared with £50 on ps.

On pc at least you have solution almost always. On consoles the only solution is cry.

I actually like this aspect of PC gaming. It doesn't even necessarily have to be bugs or crashes, if you don't like how a game plays there are ways to improve or experiment.

On Consoles (for now) it's mostly what you see is what you get.

The 360/PS3 era was kinda rough for PC. All of those games had to ported from ground up since the 360/PS3 and PC all had different architecture. A lot of those games just aren't programmed well, don't have modern resolutions or high frame rate, crash or have some kind of glitches. The exception being pretty much anything from Ubisoft. For whatever reason, they were super forward thinking and even games like Assassin's Creed 1 supports 1440p, 4k and high frame rates. It looks great even to this day.

Other than that, I honestly don't experience any issues. I played and beat a ton of games last year on PC and never had a single crash or weird issue. It's not like the old days anymore where you have to worry about drivers or compatibility. Things just work. If it doesn't work, it's likely a programming problem and the same thing can and does happen on consoles. I've honestly had more crashes and freezes on console than I've had on PC in recent years.

I think OP is just dealing with some older games and few older DRM issues that most developers have learned their lessons from and don't use anymore. I keep a 360 around and connected to my PC monitor specifically for older games that might have problems or are just more trouble than they are worth to get running on a modern PC.

pc players in a nutshell
He isn't complaing about a 1 fps performance drop. This game had problems where it capped at 59Hz and had broken VSYNC. "Ha, see? PC gaming is shit!" No, many Japanese developers, and especialliy KONAMI, are just shit at developing for PC because all they know is standardized consoles.
