- they've had a good relationship with Naughty Dog, just a few normal creative issues

- Bend was not becoming a support studio
- he said that rumor is false
- he said that Bend was helping Naughty Dog in a limited way, collaboration he called it
- it was to give some devs at Bend something to do while they had nothing else going on early in pre-pro

- new younger millennial game devs bitch and moan a lot, about everything
- getting to zero crunch is probably impossible but it does need to be managed better and fixed
- he respects Jason and has read his book, likes serious games journalism, devs should be held accountable

- a new Syphon Filter game would not work today, not modern enough, he has no new game design ideas for that
- open world game design needs to improve with better NPCs and better systems
- too many open world games are just a map full of icons for generic quests to do

ROFL

Its a sad state of affairs. Back in the day we had a "work hard, play hard" outlook. Because the understanding was that despite the stress and the long hours, the level of discomfort was nothing compared to that our parents and elders had to suffer. So we crunched when we had to and got wasted in our off-time.

Not exactly the "new rock'n'roll" but we got to scratch our creative itch and had fun wherever we could find it. I'm sure that translates in our new pussified culture as being a "boy's club" mentality but it worked, and why the job was worth doing.

So basically everything is Jim Ryan's fault again?

But honestly RE2 wasn't THAT horror, it only had insanely creepy creatures like the final boss and all the eyes, leeches eating threw your guts, and the very seen of 4 zombies eating the guts of a policeman. Mr. X looks daft but his face and zero human interaction what makes him creepy.

The real horror is Silent Hill, but it has some very goofy enemies that makes you laugh instead feeling scared, but the atmosphere is there.

Something like PT and Japanese horror in general those are real horror, I won't touch there because believe it or not they are built on real basis, but of course exaggerate to the roof.
What is scary is subjective. I would argue there is no truly scary game at all

Phew, right, i'm relaxed and I agree, neither games set the world on fire in terms of originality. I'm just pissed we'll never get a sequel to Days gone.

True, but we legit might get one next gen or something. Maybe they'll look to revive it in the future because I don't think what Jason is saying might REALLY add up to Sony NEVER making Days Gone 2, for all we know they just don't have a current time frame and what ever ND is working on might be so big, they need the help before Bend moves on with Days Gone 2.

A few reasons might support this.

ND is working on a new IP with their other team, maybe Sony wants all hands on deck on this new IP and wants Bend to work with ND for now.

They also likely will use UE5 for Days Gone 2, as they used 4 for the first game, with it not officially being released, that might be one of the other reasons why Sony wants them on that new IP with ND in the mean time. I think Jason is really uncovering something, but I also don't think he has 100% of the facts. I understand not seeing Days Gone 2 this gen, I'd never understand it if they NEVER did it, that would be quite surprising. Sony has supported titles that have sold worse. I don't feel this is a forever type thing.

Like @Perrott explained to me people kept their jobs due to these decisions.

I know it sucks that a game was cancelled but it's better than people losing their jobs or having the studio shut down.
Exactly. Quite a smart move from Sony and if it's true they're now working on a new ip it must have potential if Sony approved it over DG2 which is very popular.

I hope they gave them another shot at a AAA game. Days Gone had it's issues but I think they proved that they can make larger titles besides just handheld games with it.

This made me lol :messenger_tears_of_joy:

So Jimbo went to become head of SCE global marketing in 2016, for someone who dont like communicating?

I’m deeply hurt by the revelation that Days Gone 2 isn’t being made. I was hoping it would be announced in the next year or two. My heart is heavy with sadness. I think I’ll play Days Gone (3rd playthrough) to make me feel better.

I can see it being greenlit if their new IP is a hit which causes natural growth in the studio where they can split into two teams where one focuses on days gone 2 and the other a sequel to the new IP IF successful

Maybe even before that. A possible success in the PC version can also play a key part in motivating Sony into grennlighting a sequel.

That's a thicc summary over there, good job dude.

Shue is still at Sony? He's the reason we got Kena, Stray, Solar Ash, Sifu.
Shu has been doing a brilliant job with the Indies so far. Honestly I think this is the best strategy for Sony - get their first party studios to focus on big AAA games, because they are some of the few studios in the world who can deliver blockbuster hit after hit... which is not easy to do. Then fill the smaller title gap with curated, supported, high quality indie titles, which Shu is already killing it with!

It's more cost effective than to have smaller studios work on AA type of games. I wish it was the opposite, but when you look at the total of owning a small studio and paying for the space/licenses for tools/software ect. AA studios still cost couple million depending on how big they are and what they are working on.

Thank you so much for this.

Jim Ryan really is a dick huh? Goddamn Shawn Layden, come back. Bring Shu and Andrew House along too. The holy trinity

You need to pay attention to that video when Jeff is talking about Jim Ryan. He was a fan of his when Jim told all the execs in the room not to leak it. It shows he cares and understands like David talked about how leaks for a studios game kills moral, and everything the studio worked on.

To me it shows total respect for the developers. I mean yes it hurts the company image when it leaks, but also things can be taken out of context or misinterpreted. Especially when it's a internal demo not meant for the publc.

I think Jim knows that when a studio shows off their game to anyone it's a big, nerv wrecking deal.

Honestly time will tell, but I think all of this Jim ryan is evil BS might be super overblown. I do agree with Jaffe I think Scott Rohde would be a great fit in Ryan's position. Ryan is up there age wise so who knows if he might be grooming Scott?

I still follow Shue on twitter and he even talk to me there. He retweet a loads of japanese games, not to mention he reply indie devs.

IDK what he think about this situation, but based on what he do on twitter he still support Sony Japan and little projects.

This is Sony's strategy, imo. They are differentiating themselves from the competition through having blockbusters titles, which is a hard thing to do from critical and financial perspective, but they are nailing it lately. It took them many years to discover what they are really good at (remember all these FPS titles from PS3 era?), but the PS4 era cemented PS brand as the place to go to play these type of big, cinematic third person games. And that's a very hard strategy to others to copy, honestly, as it takes years to reach that level of quality. That's not, of course, for everyone's taste, luckly it is mine, though.

I meant that from what I saw in the interview, the Days Gone sequel is likely to come out.
How so?! I read the summary and it looks dead in the water.

Never say never is as encouraging as a girl writing "not a chance" on a napkin instead of her telephone number...

Maybe you aren't aware but some gave it below mediocre scores just due to their hatred of white males.

X to doubt.

I believe most gave it below average scores because of the derivative story and cookie cutter characters borrowed from other sources. Or to put it another way it got those scores because it deserves those scores....

You may have perceived that as hatred of white males - that’s your incorrect perception.

I remember personally one critic in one of the vetted ones on Metacritic called it a boring, white dude. So yes, there are racist reviews that got a pass, not sure why. Also EA's BF1 if you type "white man" it turns into "***** ***". AngryJoe showed it accidently and laughed at how crazy it is. Not sure what this is not considered racist and no one filed a lawsuit against EA.
