PC gaming can really be infuriating.....

Device Management offers an Update Driver feature, so why should people not use it ? What is the logic here ?
That feature is mostly used to manually change drivers for a device from a list of drivers already knwon to your Windows installation, or to install them from a local path you point it to. The feature will install drivers for, say, a HP printer that has been around for ages, or generic Microsoft drivers for your mouse. It won't scan nvidia.com, for example, for a new graphics card driver. Which makes sense, because what would happen is that, as in the example of that Geforce 950m product site you link in your above post (where did you get that link, btw?), that function could be broken by nvidia at any given time.

Well my PC certainly is a bit old (must be maybe 5 or 6 years old, wow...), but I don't see why I would not be allowed to play some Left 4 Dead on it.
You're not entitled for anything to run just because you feel like it should; specs matter.
Buying a "gaming" laptop was your first mistake.
Buying a "gaming" laptop with less than 8GB ram in 2015 is the second and biggest mistake.

However, Left for dead runs on pretty much anything, so if that didn't work, it just confirms that your system/install was fundamentally broken.

Device Management offers an Update Driver feature, so why should people not use it ? What is the logic here ?

I could not, in any way, get the appropriate drivers to download automatically, so I had to search the web and search manually on the website for something that worked.
Well, you do realise your operating system is made my Microsoft and not nvidia/intel/amd/whoever right?
When you go through device manager to "update" the driver, it just scans your install for a driver, or microsoft's servers, which generally only have very basic drivers.

This is why your GPU has it's own control panel, there you can press "update" and you will always get the latest for your videocard.
GTX 950M : oops, page does not exist anymore...
https://www.nvidia.com/fr-fr/geforce/gaming-laptops/geforce-gtx-950m/
Had to search, but the problem is that the search page does not help finding it...
Well a quick sure on google, the page you linked seems to be the first result, which just seems to be a product page.
The product is long discontinued so it makes sense that it's gone.

The second result however sends me -straight- to the driver page:
G67xkzS.png

People coming here and telling you "you are dumb it takes 5 minutes LOL bro". Yeah right.
5 minutes seems like the proper average time for a driver update yeah, but even disregarding that, you just jumped through so many unneeded hoops and essentially wasted your own time.

Exact same issue for me and I really really wanted to play it, but put on backburner for now. Its something to do with HDMI output apparently, initially it would lock to 24hz through HDMI output (lol wtf?) and not allow resolutions over 1080p (Or maybe 1440p, not 100% sure, but nothing above that without ini editing/external tools anyway).

Part of the way the devs "fixed" the 24hz issue was what introduced this 59hz issue afaik, where you have a microstutter every few seconds like you said. I never went back to it to try RTSS scanline-sync + fps caps with it but I believe its an internal issue so that probably won't solve it.

Its the kind of game that I need to be buttery smooth, its such a visual feast I won't tolerate constant stuttering.

"That... s it Rai... den, sp... lit it wid... e ope... n!":

Ehh no thanks pal.
I fixed this by going to the Nvidia Control Panel and changing my resolution from 1920x1080 to 1919x1080. It has something to do with how the game autodetects displays. Throwing it an abnormal resolution clears the issue right up.

But yes, part of the fun of PC gaming is troubleshooting. If you just want it to work (well, mostly), consoles exist.

Jade Empire jitter is due to clock drift and restarting your PC fixes it. However, nothing will fix the game itself being mediocre and you’re better off not playing it.

Sounds like PC gaming to me.

I definitely deal with shit like this from time to time.

Been there with Alice Returns as well. What a fucking joke.

Next time I have a problem with my computer I will make sure to call you, so you can solve it in 5 minutes.

The advantage of consoles is that you won't get pretentious people without a clue about the context telling you that what you bought 6 years was a mistake. It was a great buy actually. Or next time, you can maybe pay me the computer, as you seem to have so much money.
You also don't get people telling you to upgrade. Because upgrading, which means investing more money, is never a solution on console, as games not working is never a problem to begin with.
And if you don't use your console for a couple years, you get an update and that's it.

So in the end, what I see, is that it does take 5 minutes... when you play on console. I actually spent more time in this PC thread, than I spent updating updating my Xbox One over the course of the previous 6 years (download times excluded of course), since you don't have to worry about anything.

I wish the best to the PC community in the future !

Good for you, but it objectively wasn't a great buy for playing games if it had less than 8gb ram, less than a console, in 2015.
Or next time, you can maybe pay me the computer, as you seem to have so much money.
Or, next time you don't buy garbage hardware with the expectation to use it, as is, 6 years later.

Yeah, let's ignore all the console games that run like shit on the og xbox one, but run great after upgrading to a one x or series x. :pie_eyeroll:; I've lost count of how many times FF15 crashed on my og xbox one.

This is one of the most embarrassing threads I've ever given myself a brain tumour by reading.

I don't know who I hate more, the console idiots who still think that PC gaming involves writing an autoexec.bat file to ensure that QEMM allocates enough extended memory to play Syndicate, or the wannabe, 21 year old PC master race idiots who still think that console gaming is a blurry, smeary mess of 30fps trash, and that being able to plug a GPU into a motherboard makes them some kind of computer genius.

Reading your comments makes my eyes feel like they have syphillis. The idiocy is so nuclear that it burns.

By far the console folks that still think PC gaming is like in 1995. The young PCMR idiot is making an effort to learn how things work. And console gaming was a blurry mess of sub HD sub 30 FPS trash not too long ago (ps360 era and even past gen at times) so they may have a point. The latest consoles are amazing hardware wise though.

What pisses PC gamers off are the age old stereotypes and myths regarding the platform, that always have to be debunked. Specially in an "enthusiast" forum like this one.

No. Both camps are complete morons. There have always been horrible PC ports, and there have always been crap console games. Stop talking about 'what pisses PC gamers off' as though you're in some kind of super secret magical club.

I don't think anyone can argue that console gaming is much easier and simpler in general.

I always loved PC gaming, its how I started many moons ago but I got old and lazy and basically switched to console only half way through last gen. I barely touch my PC for gaming.. I think the last time I spent a good amount of time gaming on my PC was when the C&C remastered collection got released. I'm happy with the new(current) gen console performance and graphics through my TV.

60fps performance mode has or is becoming the norm and its good enough for me! I'm done with troubleshooting PC issues.

I can without issue play my games on my old consoles as well (ps3 is not 30 years old by the way). As for more modern consoles are concerned, I feel a bit sorry for people who invested a lot in Sony or Nintendo consoles, but the outcome was pretty obvious anyway, knowing how these companies do business. Anyone serious about keeping its games and consoles in the long run will opt for Xbox consoles.

What a nothingburger argument, of course the megadrive became shit hardware.
It became shit hardware 5 years later when the saturn was released, which in turn became shit hardware 4 years later with the dreamcast.
Also some revisionist history going on there, where you forget the megadrive had two add-ons, and games that wouldn't run without them; literally forced to buy new hardware if you wanted to play those games. :pie_eyeroll:

Yet here you are, 6 years later, trying to play games on hardware that was already outdated when you bought it, and then be surprised your specs don't cut it.🤷‍♂️

I don't see how you can think that way unless you completely ignore the way Microsoft fucked up for most of the past decade. They changed their tune because they were getting utterly destroyed in terms of sales, but you'd be a fool to assume many of the people and the mindset behind the disastrous initial incarnation of the Xbox One just disappeared completely. And yes, that includes Phil.

If industry history has shown us one thing, it's that companies have a tendency to get cocky and try to get away with bullshit once they feel secure in their position. That goes for all three of them. Microsoft did it last gen after 360 drew even with PS3, Sony did it coming off the success of the PS2 and now the PS4, and Nintendo has so much money that they can just do whatever they want anyway.

360 was partially BC (and required efforts for this), and you can be sure that BC was planned from the beginning on Xbox One. Simply took some time.

They also made a ton of efforts to help us keep our saves across systems, accessory compatibility etc...

Microsoft is a software and infrastructure company, I am much more confident that they will preserve my gaming purchases for the future.

PC gaming is a double edged sword of fun time wasting and infuriating time wasting.

Wasting 2 hours getting all the mods you want set up in Morrowind? Fantastic.

Wasting 2 hours trying to figure out why you can't run a specific game? Ass.

I only dabble in it as I have a modest laptop I can play some older PC exclusives on, but I doubt I'll take up PC as my main platform any time soon because I don't have the patience for the negative aspects.

Yeah, I remember when people said the same thing about GFWL. Then they shut down the entire store and rendered most of the games on it unplayable, all without offering refunds. Meanwhile, the store that replaced it has been broken from the start, and there's no sign that they'll be fixing it anytime soon. I know people who bought games there years ago that they have never been able to install, never mind play. And that's despite Phil's promises that they were "really, really gonna get it right this time".

I'm sure you'll go "Oh, that's just on PC. Who cares about PC? They'd never do that to Xbox!" But at that point you should probably ask yourself if you're just being naive.

Well to be fair, GFWL failed mostly because it started with trying to get pc players to pay for multiplayer.
Even after removing that, pc players were already soured on it, and it having less features than the other pc storefronts didn't help.

The xbox store isn't going away.

I've been a PC gamer since the mid 80s and I haven't had this problem since the days of DOS and having to write custom config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Even then it was often a very simple fix.

The only issue I have with PC gaming currently is the inability to "sleep" games, like I can on a console and resume them later.

That explains why they gave up on it, but it doesn't excuse how they went about it, which is the real issue here. It doesn't explain why the current iteration of their store is as shitty as it is, either.

There are a billion ways for them to fuck people over without closing down the store.

The real issue? It takes minutes to fix easy problems on old ass games that weren't designed to natively run on OS software/hardware that wasn't invented yet. Or the lack of understanding that not all PC ports are the same.

What's been happening in this thread is people moving goal post to make arguments about asinine bullshit that has nothing to do with the original post.

If people kept strictly to the issues outlined in the initial post, no thread on this board would run for more than one or two pages. But people bring up other points that may only be tangentially related to the original issue, and if someone disagrees with those, they're free to point it out, of course, which naturally carries the risk of moving the conversation even further away from the initial topic. After a while every discussion is going to degenerate into several smaller discussions between different people that do not necessarily need to involve the OP at all.

Such is the nature of online message boards 🤷

you can use stuff like RTSS the fix frametimes any time or just unlock the frame rate. And at least you solved some problems with sonic and TR. How did you solve the problems with Bloodborne frame pacing or Killzone 2 and Rise of Tomb Raider insane input lags on consoles?

King of what? You are at developers mercy, Mortal Shell was 60 fps at 1440p and now it's ~40-50 at 1800p and console doesn't support VRR so it looks like shit. On PC you can choose your desired framerate and adjust settings to get there.

I 99.99% fixed the between area stutters in JFO... by playing at 30fps. It didnt matter if I was at 720p and medium settings it still stuttered heavily between zones/during combat when I was outputting 60hz. So the loss of IQ was too enormous to lock to 60 for me so I went with 30, which fixed reduced the stutters down to once every 30 minutes frequency.

Its the same with Arkham Knight so maybe its related to Unreal Engine/how the game is coded, you need a massive GPU usage deficit to maintain 60fps during those stutter points, which means the game has to look significantly worse all the time to get locked 60. If it wasn't too often I wouldn't have minded but it was pretty frequent, like every 30-60 seconds and sometimes during combat.

I'm not sure if newer equivalents of my CPU/GPU (I have a 3770K/1080) + a faster drive could've fixed the stutters and allowed 60fps, due to latency/bandwidth increases in the newer HW.

RE2&3 remake also has this problem with loading/autosaving stutters sometimes, but they aren't too severe, but it has the crazy GPU usage deficit again so if you want to play at 1440p+ and lock to 60 during cutscenes you need to be at like 60% max GPU usage during normal gameplay. I wish they would just optimise the graphic/alpha transparencies for when the camera is close up to the characters in cutscenes, DoF being on makes its impossible to lock to 60 in cutscenes without massive IQ decrease, but even with it off the framerate is too variable when at high resolutions/settings, I'm not sure they do a lot of optimisation work/testing at 1620p+ because when you have top end HW you can just brute force through all these problems if you are playing at 1080p60, but I'm pretty unenthused with 1080p and even 1440p at this point, I crave 4K now and its seems its difficult/impossible for them to optimise for those outputs.

Sonic Racing Transformed I remember as well, just consistent unexplained stutter without external sync which is obviously unwanted in a racing game.

On Xbox One/PS4? For sure. Playing most of my games on the Series X and everything loads faster, even games running off my external HDD. But I also have an external SSD I use for the backwards compatible games that take the longest to load like Skyrim or Witcher 3. Not to mention the games running on the internal SSD. Consoles are catching up when it comes to load times.

About jfo. I have an rx 6800, ryzen 5800, nvme hdd, 32 gig of ram. Thats 48 gb of ram in total. That is more than the installed file. Why are they not loading the entire level into ram? I would imagine that most gaming pcs should be able to load 1 level into ram.

Anyway you seem to have the same "eyes" as me. You are bothered by the same things, uneven framerates, framepacing. I cannot stand it. Most pc fanboys are not bothered by this. Its pretty obvious when you watch youtube. Most of them play games with unlocked framerates, frame rate that jumps from 58-140. Which in my opinion looks like dog shit. It feels like a broken game. Even if you are playing with vrr, you should lock it at the lowest 1%.

Welcome to PC gaming. I was 100% PC for years, but I'm too old for that headache. My PC can game fine, but besides my kid playing Minecraft or Roblox, I never use it. I'd rather recline with a controller and a system that just works.

Series X was released along with Morrowind? Did you start gaming only after Series X? Did you only played Morrowind after the Series X? Can you even choose to mod Morrowind on Series X?
What are you talking about? You clearly misunderstood my original post saying I play Morrowind on a laptop. Most other games I play on a Series X. Either you're reading comprehension isn't good or English isn't your first language. If it's the second case I won't fault you for it but man read more carefully.

I only play RTS or strategy type of games on the PC. I have started to try out some other types and have acquired a good amount of games via GOG that I have played on consoles in the past. Prices can drop a lot so some of them I got simply to have in my collection.

PC gaming is still my favorite.

But yeah, it has some special challenges that can make you want to just use a console sometimes.

I don't question people's experience at all, but having been a PC gamer for about ten years now and never having had a problem that couldn't be fixed in at the absolute tops an hour, I too wonder having these kind of problems has something to do with unstable hardware.

But to add my thing to the list of annoyances: modern benchmarks (on the internet, not ingame) are so shitty. Several times this past year I went online to check up benchmarks, and they ended up being super wrong about 4k performance. It's always been on a positive note though. As an example I bought Outriders on release, and after checking multiple benchmarks I was certain I wouldn't be able to run it in 4k on my 1080 ti without lowering to at least medium settings. Start the game up, turn off antialiasing (which is never needed in 4k anyway) and lower shadows to medium and voila, super stable 4k 60 fps. I mean, do they really have to test games with just the presets? Who maxes antialiasing out in 4k?

English is not my first language. What I am saying is that you are complaining about wasting 2 hours modding Morrowind as a pc gaming problem. An opcional feature of pc gaming can´t be a pc problem if it´s opcional. And stating that imply that the state of Morrowind on consoles is better. Only loading times now can be better on XSX, but just now after XSX released. What about other aspects of the games, the past other games stuck on past consoles and all the time you already wasted on loading screens on past consoles (on multi platform games)??? The state of them is better on these consoles or on PC?
