Replacement PS5 has coil whine worse than the first

I wouldn't put it past some fanatics to invent problems with their systems to score some 'points'. Create a bit of FUD around the forum.

Some really weird people on this forum desperate for any sorts of 'wins'.

Whether it's Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, seems unhealthy.

Yesterday played like 10 hours with mjnor breaks. Today for the first time coil whine is audible. It's pretty loud. Stops immediately when closing a game.

Another coil whine user here...yaay...

This may sound dumb but i honestly think Sony did something with the software updates, either that or i got extremely unlucky.

I remember when i got my PS5 i was ecstatic on how quiet it was. I played Astro's for like 3 hours straight and it LITERALLY was "whisper quiet". I went onto Dead by Daylight and was in shock on how it made absolutely no sound, no coil whine, and you could only hear the fan when you were right next to the console. I was also bragging to my cousin on how you could barely hear it, compared to the jet engine that the PS4 was.

I thought how i got lucky to have the quietest fan and how i had no coil whine, but i swear after installing an software update it all went downhill. First the fan noise drastically increased, to the point of me getting my old PS4 Slim flashbacks. I open it up and it turns out i got the worst and loudest fan, even though it was insanely quiet the first week.

Now i open Dead by Daylight, and not only is the fan loud, but its coil whining like crazy, where i can hear it from the other side of the room.

I don't know what to do, i don't usually mind the noise or really notice it unless i'm playing with headphones or it's late at night and it's quiet in the house. It is super annoying once i do notice it, and then i can't help but focus on it, which annoys me even more in the process.
Don't wanna try my luck with getting another unit, as knowing my luck it's going to be even worse that this one, plus the main "warranty guarantee" or whatever is called is probably going to check my console and say that it's completely fine and then return it, as my country is pretty stupid in that sense.

getting a replacement will do nothing. only real fix is to slather epoxy on every capacitor, coil and transformer in your PSU. microsoft does it in their PSUs(as do other companies) to prevent these components from singing.
you can thank sony for being cheap to save a few cents for some goop.

Don’t get a replacement. The one they give you might be worse. My digital PS5 has noticeable coil whine, but I use headphones to ignore it. The fan also kicks up immediately upon starting any game, but the fan noise never changes speed or pitch. It’s just a constant sound no matter how intense the game is. I was surprised when I got an XSX and it makes no noise ever.

The PS4 and PS5 were made like complete junk.

Honestly, the PS3 was the only system Sony has made that wasn't junk and coincidently that was the generation where Xbox made it's only junky system.

I really do not think that is fair. The PS4 has a cheap build quality. The PS5? It has a really good build quality. I am sorry for those with quality issues with their copy but nothing today indicates that there is a build quality problem with the PS5. Unfortunately however, there is a certain % of an electronics product that will come off the assembly line with some sort of issue. When you sell millions of that product even a really good % number results in 10's of thousands of customers that are unhappy.

I had 3 bad fan bearings. 1 of my disc drives on my PS5 had an extremely loud clicking sound to it when spinning the discs, I've had issues with the side panels themselves not fitting properly into place causing movement and buzzing when the disc drive revved up. The coil whine issue is a real thing. They use different fans in different consoles, which also causes variable noise level (one is much louder than the other 2).

The PS5 was no ready to be launched period. Still, there really is no software that's a must play that you can't already play on PS4. They should have waited until 2021.

Ps4 is junk yes, ps5 is solid, only problem is coli whine, trust me have seen many ps5s, hardware wise its the best sony have made, they just need to Fix the coil whine.

These touchy people would be in a bad place on car forum, where 80% of the people joining in, is to talk shit about the cars because they are pissed off. It's just the nature of things, you buy something it's not how you want it, or you perceive a problem and then you take it to the foruns. I did it with my Opel Corsa, i never posted anything there other than complaining about that piece of shit.

Also, coil whine is absolutely normal, anyone that pretends it isn't is kidding himself. GPUs are notorious for this, is just that the rest of the fans etc. drowns that noise down if it's not too prevalent. I had at least to GPUs that were clearly audible.

The System FW update from yesterday made my coil whine worse. Significantly. It now produces a genuine coil whine noise (not just the buzzing) when I start Need for Speed Heat:

This happens on every loading screen, on top of that is the general buzzing whine louder (it was hardly audible now I hear it like my old PS4 Pro) and the fan is also kicking in more than before when Nioh 2 runs. I really don't feel like playing when the console is now worse than my old PS4 Pro. lol

This has been a great week so far, first the R2 Trigger fails on my DualSense and now this. I wish I could rollback to the previous FW.

Fan noise and coil whine seem not to be a problem at all in my system, but the Blu-Ray drive is freaking loud when playing back UHD Blu-Ray movies. Almost unacceptably so… near there. I mean WTF…

This is interesting, because I've noticed coil whine for the first time after the firmware update and LordOfChaos from the PlayStation thread had a similar observation. Surely it's not a coincidence?

This is nice to know that I'm not the only one then, it kinda sucks but whatever Sony did made it worse. My guess is that our consoles already had issues (I had barely audible whine before this, but I was okay with it) and the new Display settings may have fucked some things up for some of us.

I've noticed that the high pitched squeal almost disappears when I output at 1080p, but the console is still producing some weird noise it didn't before the update.

They may have tweaked the power management, but most likely its just coincidence, as it is known coil wine increases or decreases with time, its a hardware flaw that sony needs to fix, its a very easy fix, so expect the next hardware revision to fix it.

People will buy them regardless so I don't think Sony is that concerned with addressing this any time soon. I'm glad my replacement console had a louder fan so it drowns out the coil whine better.

Coil whine has nothing to do with the disc. I have the DE and it has very noticeable coil whine issues. My PS4 Pro did as well. Sony just sucks at this aspect of making hardware.
Oh... I haven’t noticed it then on mine guess I got lucky. My PS4 was suuuper loud

Like everyone else’s, except Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem , who i still believe to be living in Siberia, or almost deaf.

We've got 4 PS4/Pro, none has noise except one that was US-spec from gray market one month before official release. Could be just we're getting it from a good factory out of the 3 ones. I've seen many of PS4 and all of them are silent, even shitty ones in amusement shops that are tortured for hours. PS4's are offered in restaurants as well that provide Sheesha and such to play FIFA in rented rooms with your friends. You find PS4's everywhere and I've seen more than 100 and only one was noisy, my sister's early batch of US-market PS4's came in November and sold at 450 OMR ($1170 USD) before the official release in December for 181 OMR ($470 USD).

My PS4 was actually remarkably silent, it was a CUH-1216B model, the first revision model. Might be because i live up north and that I cleaned thoroughly every year. Both my cousins launch model, my friends slim and another friends PS4 Pro sounds like hairdryers, so it defintely is an issue though.

Nah, we live in a 3-floor house with my parents. My older sister is out at her husband's :) Me and my wife and the kid got the 3rd floor, my brother and his wife and 2 kids, my younger sister, mom and dad, 3 maids share the rest. Thanks to God, there are 2 other houses (one at the capital 1200km away, one few km away) and 2 buildings so we're not cramped :lollipop_grinning_sweat:.

I wouldn’t hear my PS4 either with that many kids

My wife and I have a 3-story beach house, where normally all you ever hear are the waves, seagulls and crows (from all the beach visitors). My US PS4 Pro is located in the middle of the 2nd floor. And during the menus of some games, especially COD: War Zone, I don't care if you have 20 kids running around, you will hear that PS4 Pro's jet engine noise no matter which floor you're on. I'm with Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem .

Yeah my sister's PS4 (first batch of US PS4's) was extremely loud, unbearable. It's shockingly different that all native PS4's here, and I think we happen to get PS4's from certain factories? Or maybe because all people here have AC's on while gaming so it's perfect for the consoles? Not sure. I never cleaned it, not the 2013 base model nor my PS4 Pro from 2016.

It's kinda shocking to me how cheap the PS5 feels in general. The snap on plastic pieces make it feel a little more substantial than it is. The actual system itself feels like cheap plastic, cheap fans and cheap parts all around. I'm surprised it runs and is powerful as it is because it certainly doesn't feel like it. And yes, I have the coil whine as well.

I think this is one area where Microsoft has been shining lately. Starting with the Xbox One S, they've been nailing the design. It feels premium, well cooled, well designed and powerful. No coil whine on the XSX and whisper quiet.

You guys are picky as hell :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Compared to the PS4 PRO jet engine, PS5's coil whine is a bless.

During the day, since I play with the sound louder, I don't hear it at all.

At night, with the volume down and everything in the house more silent, I hear it, but I am also one meter away from the console - which is 100% exposed by the way.

So, in my case a pair of headphones solves the problem. No need to go for a replacement.

My experience with PlayStation consoles has been mostly positive hardware wise. I had a PS3 in which the disc drive failed but that's about it. My PS4 pro can get loud at times but it's not a big deal imo.

How is everyone getting on with coil whine, better/worse/the same? I've had my PS5 a few weeks now and I get it mainly when playing games at 60fps. I can't really hear it over normal TV volume but can hear it during quiet moments, in game menus etc. It sounds quite PC-like really, or sometimes like a quiet set of hair clippers or a mini fridge.

It's irritating rather than a massive problem, just a shame and one of those things you can't un-notice. Still don't think it's worth sending back, especially with current supply issues and the fact a replacement might be even worse!

My PS5 i got back in December is still 100% silent, no coil whine, or anything regardless of what im playing and for how long. After a few hrs if i get my ear real close to the back of it i hear a low fan noise, nothing more.

Still don't have a PS5 want to play new Rivet & Clank.
Compelled to chime in on poor PS4 Pro build quality. It's loud when it's heating up and cooling down it creaks and groans and pops.
I thought I had a mouse in the house one night, nope it was just the PS4 Pro cooling down.
