Super smart business move. 3 billion is nice. And if the Playstation licensed films do well, then I can see this deal expanding beyond.

But that all came while Microsoft had very few big games in the works for Xbox One. Sony is not in that same position. It is making a lot of games for PS5, and it’s making deals to bring even more third-party exclusives to the platform. In that context, PS Plus Video Pass feels like an additive bonus that won’t diminish the games.

Sounds like they're just taking the high road from a gaming subscription service and offer a type of media that isn't fully available on the Console. Still making games, so it's an additive like Grubb states.

I thought they signed deals with netflix and hbo to avoid this ugh...

Ok but, having those deals doesn't mean they want to make less money or something or will turn down another revenue stream.

I don't get this either or thinking tbh. Business is about making as much money as you can, not as little money as feasible or "enough" money or something. This is some flawed logic that I don't really understand why gamers assume such things. They want to avoid making more money? huh?

on topic. It sounds like some add on to PS Plus or might be included that gives streams to shows or downloads to shows and films or something. Until we hear pricing or if its included or what its made up of, not sure what to think just yet as it could be something good, could be trash lol I'm not looking to spend shit on a new subscription. I have enough.

What if this is where they are putting all their anime shit?

mckmas8808 mckmas8808 a deal like Netflix and HBO for $15 sounds too wild to be true. Would 100% jump on that as thats not even really a increase for me, if anything I'd be getting HBO Max for free as the same price I'm already paying for netflix is that anyway lol So sounds unlikely, if they are able to pull off something that wild, I'd be shocked.

Ed knew about it for a while (timestamped)

This is how they should do it. Separate streaming strategy and gamer-centric strategy. The movie and shows streaming industry is 10x bigger than gaming industry.

1. Streaming strategy - Movies, Shows, Anime, Games. Games will add value and will be Sony's unique proposition compared to Netflix and Disney+. This will compete for the billion of casuals out there.

2. More robust PS Plus - call it PS+ Premium or something. More day and date release of AA games.

There was a infamous pastebin from December 2018 that mentioned the PS+ Premium thing. So your comment reminded me of it. I believe some other things came to be true as well from that post.

from what i see at the moment they didnt even solely set their eye video game subscriber services like gamepass.

they set up groundwork for their own streaming services like netflix instead by leveraging ps+ and console as jumping stone. kind of make sense considering what kind of company they are. videogame not their only sole focus. they also looking at hbo, netflix, disney+ while taking advantages of their playstation system that already been part of living room around the world. ps4 already sold over 100m, assuming ps5 gonna reach that number again in next 6 years so it is such a waste to not take advantages of that.

then later they could put game streaming services together so in longer run their services would cover both area at same time.

they also looking at hbo, netflix, disney+

They should. That market is huge. Netflix alone is at around 300 million sub.

Disney+ got to 80 million subs in just a year. Compare that to MS Gamepass which, despite the continuous $1 deal, only manages around 20 million with it being released for almost 5 years already.

But that strategy should be confined to streaming. They should make a different service for their Playstation gamers. A more robust PS+ I think will do the trick. PS+ already has a headstart of 45 million subs.

lmao i think ive seen it all.
comparing disney + to gamepass.
stay salty

I barely use Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Hulu that I currently pay for... WTF am I going to do with another streaming movie service 🤷‍♂️ I really need to get rid of these services that I don't use 🤦‍♂️

Maybe their response to Gamepass is bundling other media services with PS Plus.

That should be a response to Netflix, HBO, and Disney+.

A service around what PS Plus has started should be more gamer-centric.I think Sony should do both.

Gamers, in general, don't care about streaming. Casuals, on the other hand, don't care about hardware.

1. The gamer approach should be centered around games with perhaps few additional media. They could build this through what they have already started with PS+.

2. The casual approach should be centered around movies, shows, and anime - with game streaming to add value.

Lol, that would be really stupid. We care about games, not about this shit.
I’m with you on that one. I have a Netflix and an Amazon Prime subscription but if I’m signing up to a gaming service I don’t care about extra movie/series stuff. Just want more games.

Like people really cared for media delivery aside from games when there are other platforms better suited for that like all the million subscription services under the sun these days. Not that is a bad thing to be a "plus" (no pun intended) to the service, but it seems kinda useless.

I dont think its a terrible idea, but im sure the execution will be a limp dick response to GamePass.

They've already said they won't, but to compete, Sony needs to put games and movies in there day & date.

Remove games, add movies, then add ads, and the profit will be like cable companies all over again, thought there was a reason people went away from comercial tv, if something like that happens i hope people are quick to vote with their wallets so the gaming space wont be full of this.

Make sure you all watch the Charlie’s Angels reboot. It’s a pure masterclass in cinematic story telling.

Look... if this is a value add... maybe 1 or 2 free rentals a month? Great!! I can use that!! That would be useful and could really put a dent in other services.

If this is just a pass to watch essentially pre selected trash Sony remakes of film that should be buried in a landfill forever... like the Ghostbusters remake , Robocop remake, Total Recall remake or.... the second Ghostbusters remake...

Probably lets you stream stuff like Anime, which ties in with their Funimation/ crunchyroll purchase.
makes a lot of sense lots of fans of playstation are anime fans. Unifying fans should be easy to do if they push this hard enough. They also need to combine the video game comics , toys , and I guess anime jpop music in the marketing for playstation. Gamers will get hype if they see a awesome statue of kratos or Cloud at e3.

edit: I thought the crunchyroll purchase didn't go through.

So wierd that Poland is the only country at this point. Curious to hear their reasoning behind only launching it there.

Edit:
From the VGC article:

”Asked to elaborate on why this test was behing held in Poland, Maguire said: “We know very well that we have a large base of players in Poland who stand out due to their commitment and activity in the network and social media.

“They also like to use VoD platforms. For us, this is the perfect combination, the perfect market, to introduce a test service as part of the PS Plus program and see what our key users think about it.

“Of course, I cannot share the exact data on the basis of which we chose Poland. However, I can emphasize that Poland meets all the criteria that are important to us, your country is a mixture of very important factors from this perspective.””

Fucking Poland only bullshit.

Most of the movies on there are pure trash.

You need to watch Bladerunner 2049.

Arrival is ok.

I'm almost afraid to recommend Baby Driver to anyone(because of the actors is a BAD MAN™), but maybe some Pols will stealth watch it now. But the movie is fucking great.

My Plus expires in June, and this isn't going to keep me subbed to my old PS4 Pro as I'm not in Poland.

If this is what Sony had in mind for a "counterpunch" to GP its pretty underwhelming to say the least. Games and movie/TV services have been silo'd successfully bc that's what the market generally prefers. People mostly don't buy a game console to watch movies any more than they buy an Apple TV or Roku to play games. Yes, some people might but most don't. Yes, there is some possible value add to the crossover. But there are at least a couple big reasons why the "All in One" media push of the Xbone largely failed, one of them being that gamers don't give a shit about this sort of thing.

The other big reason is that movies/TV shows have to some degree been "devalued" as a potential value add even to those who do care by the variety of other, better services with far more content. Hell, even torrents have to factor into this to some degree. Shows and movies are ubiquitous at this point, an overflow of content and not enough time to watch it all and a big, bulky, electricity sucking space heater isn't the first choice for most people to consume it all when a 3 watt Roku or Firestick (or thumb drive with downloaded movies) can do the same thing for pennies per show.

Let's hope Sony publishes their games on every platform available then!

This is obviously not the "counterpunch" for anything.
  1. It is just a test.
  2. It is limited to Poland.
  3. It is movies, not games.
  4. It is an added benefit

I don't think this service is mutually exclusive to releasing any information as a "counterattack" to Gamepass. Sony can walk and chew gum I'm sure.
