Returnal Hands-On Impressions (PS5) – A Roguelike Of AAA Quality That Isn’t Pulling Any Punches

It´s got a lot of bullet hell elements, but in the end you`re using mostly swords. It is melee combat, the fast and agile kind.
I loved GoW but I really wish Kratos had more agility/reach. I always felt a bit like a tank with T-rex arms.

He feels like a tank indeed, and the hits and fight kinda have weight to them. That's the best part of the game. I really hope they give him the right atmosphere in the next movie, he can really be the best super hero in movies and games.

Also he's more than 200 years old though :)

Talking of combat, i am playing through a game called Styx shards of darkness now, the amount of god damn times I have died trying to parry an attack is unbelievable.

Great game but I think I have more deaths in it than all my souls gamed combined.

Take a look at the 2 preorder suits and where to find the wardrobe:

You usually avoid fighting in styx.

That's normal Styx is more an infiltration game, your character is underequipped for 1v1 fight.
If you have the opportunity play it with a friend, it is really fun (when one of you die after a short the other will vomit his friend back in the game .... except if you chose to stand near a ledge and vomit him back to death again .... just to fuck with him).

Honestly I'm torn. I don't like the tinted helmet in both extra suits but wanna feast my eyes on that firm ass. More importantly I wanna see every detail of her expressions so I'll stick with the OG suit, sadly. Also she's one of the hottest moms out there.:messenger_smiling_hearts:

From what I see so far I guess Atropos is a demon/devil planet, showing how demons fled this planet and found themselves on Earth. Kinda making them look like "victims".

Give me a score Bo, what do you reckon this beauty is going to get?

Said before 87 on Metacritics, but I can see plenty of 10/10 and 9/10. Won't be surprised if this lands around 90-95 as well.

I might play the game when i finally manage to buy a ps5 somewhere. i don't see the 70 euro value yet...but who knows...

This scene and its visuals is straight out of Prometheus. Then again, the visuals were Prometheus only strong part after Damon Lindelof massacred Spaiths original script
Yep. Maybe people can admit Prometheus had some elements that were some of the best sci-fi I've seen in years. The engineer is still one of the most amazing alien designs I've ever seen.

Skill Up has finished it. As has the editor for Gamespot.

I get the impression that it's not too difficult.
Surprising. SkillUp kind of whined and complained about Hades, which is a pretty friendly roguelite.

Prometheus and the parts that make it up are great, its just that sum of its parts was held together by whatever material Lindelof makes his ”nonsensical at the wrong place”-scripts out of.
The visuals and effects are top notch, the idea of exploring the origins of the LV-426 space pilot was great and the Von Däniken ideas were also interesting. Then they somehow managed to fuck it all up. I’m still sad :(

I actually liked Prometheus. And fassbender is awesome in it.

People probably had so many theories going in so it seems shallow but it’s really just a simple explanation that’s deeper when you think about it

Very interesting! Some parasites prevent death entirely!

I'm not sure it seems more like a health regen activating when low on health and considering how hard ennemies hits, I don't think it prevents death, unless you were talking something about what previewers said.

It says it in the text. Must be talking about another parasite that probably prevents one lethal hit or something.

Another preview with no Death for 45 minutes:

DonJorginho DonJorginho this video around the very last 5 minutes.

You read it there. I think if your health is depleted maybe it gives you another round, whether it's full health bar or just some. As Punished Miku Punished Miku said, it's about one specific parasite.

Yeah, ok i admit, Fassbender was great as well. I originally wrote only the visuals were the only strong part and that was probably a bit unfair. Pretty much everything was good/great except the writing. Im just a little bitter, I went in with really high hopes since Scott returned to direct and I was like ”ah, finally someone who gets the concepts return to direct after 3/4 and the AvP movies” and was underwhelmed

How is sundered? I have it on the epic store but never tried.
in my view it's the best Super Metroid sequel ever.

it is a rogue-lite, but there's an overarching big map layout with fixed major points and item placement, but to get to those you go through procedurally generated small minutiae level designs. It's a cool balance and you still need certain powerups to reach places. It really feels authentic Metroid, female protagonist, that feeling of desolate loneliness in an alien world against multiple menaces - although it's Lovecraftian horror...

really good game

I have started playing it a couple of times and i like the gameplay and the setting but I find the art direction very off. Some stuff looks good and some looks very bland. I might need to give it another chance!

+1 to the ability to play co-op, I found that very unique and it worked way better than I anticipated

never tried nor care for co-op, but art direction is great, animations too.

did you ever get to first boss? Not mini boss, the real giant deal. It's awesome...

Can anyone recommend a good game of similar style I can practise with , I haven't played many of this kind, Is hollow knight similar? I mean a "Rogue like" not familiar with the genre.

Hades, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon.

Hades is pretty much the best one in my opinion. Enter the Gungeon was so difficult I never really made it that far. It's fun though. Same with Dead Cells.

I've heard people hype up Risk of Rain 2. I've never tried it. But it is actually third person shooter from what I can tell.

Doesn't look too difficult from the gameplays i've seen.
From the video it looks like rooms are small and enemies only spawn when you enter a new one, and usually there aren't a lot of them (though that could be just because gameplays shown are from early levels)

The flying enemy, doesn't it look like inspired by god of war's valkeries? Even the battleground looks inspired by it.

Saving mid-run aren't necessary. You can just jump straight to where you were through shortcuts. It's more like "roguelite", there are permanent upgrades like shortcuts to jump between places or right close to your last spot, grabbling hook to enter inaccessible spots before for loot/etc, and probably a swimming tech as there was a pool with loot underneath that you can't go there.

Also you start with zero resources and 0 level gun, but you can jump to the last spot and reach a box, plenty of them, and pick up a high level gun straight from 0 to like 5 or 6 or higher. Enemies aren't that hard, the smaller ones, so it won't be an issue. Also you don't need to fight bosses you've beaten. Once you've unlocked a new area it's permanently open, same with shortcuts and some equipment.

Reviews should cover those.
Appreciate this bud, didn't know a lot of the above.

Not long now.

Someone posted a 30+min video of gameplay, which looks like they are in the Crimson Wastes biome in the last third of the video. I think the impressions embargo blocked that from the public. Not entirely sure though.
