Current LTD
PlayStation 4 - 115.9M
Nintendo Switch - 84.59M

Sales trajectory from the last 3 fiscal years for both gaming consoles.

PlayStation 4
FY2018 - 17.8M
FY2019 - 13.4M
FY2020 - 5.6M

Nintendo Switch
FY2018 - 16.9M
FY2019 - 21.M
FY2020 - 28.8M

Perspective of what it looked like at the end of FY2017.
PlayStation 4 - 79M
Nintendo Switch - 17.8M

Nintendo Switch is currently riding on a strong momentum as the sales isn't slowing down at all despite entering its 5th year on the market. With the upcoming pro model, potential price drop of base model, AAA first party games like BOTW2, Splatoon 3, Next 3D Mario, Pokemon games and etc, Nintendo Switch sales will shatter Nintendo's forecast of selling 25M in FY2021.

PS4, on the other hand, is dying very quickly than what it was expected. Despite nearly 60M units headstart for PS4 it's inevitable at this point that Nintendo Switch will outsell it by the end of 2022.

Sony could have sold 140M+ ps4 if they continued to produce it. Especially a super slim with a price cut.

Alas Ps5 had to succeed so they sacrificed it.

Switch will pass it no problem. The real question is will switch pass 2nd place DS or top dog the PS2. They won't be in a hurry to make a switch 2 so it will have a long time to try.

Visualization of how insane is Nintendo Switch sales trajectory compared to PS4.

The little system that could.

It is kind of odd Sonys approach bridging from the ps2 to ps3 , compared to ps4 with ps5 . When ps3 dropped you could still easily find new slim ps2 for $99 all over the place for at least a few years. When ps5 dropped , ps4s started getting scarce . You would think Sony would have produced more as they would have sold. I'm sure Covid had something to do with it.

No it won't pass PS2.It doesn't have the games catalogue, and the hardware is looking dated already.

PS4 will continue to sell, it's long overdue a price cut really.

XB1 and PS4 are more powerful than Switch and yet they were unable to stop Switch momentum.

Upcoming Games catalogue
+BOTW 2 = 20M seller
+New 3D Mario = 20M seller
+New 2D Mario = 20M seller
+Pokemon Remake = 15M seller
+Pokemon Legends = 20M seller
+Splatoon 3 = 10M seller
+Metroid Prime 4 = ???
+Evergreen Monsters like MK8D, SSBU, SMO, BOTW, ACNH, and etc price drop, discount, promotion.

Congrats Nintendo but again, it needs to be said they are not battling for the same demographics, you will be more accurate comparing Switch sales to Legos and other children 🧸.

Switch beating PS4 is inevitable. The only if here is if Switch will surpass the DS and PS2.
I mean it surpassed the Wii I think or SNES or something. I know it surpassed one of their own systems but don't remember which one.

I would think Nintendo is more concerned with it surpassing the DS line for consoles sold. I mean, PS4 numbers are great but they are not DS/PS2 numbers.

Sony had not given PS4 a price cut because there is just no spare production capacity. Everything they have is dedicated to making more PS5s, i am sure they would eventually release a budget $199 PS4 one day, it is just not the right time for it.

Weren't consoles about to die not so long ago? What's going on, we have had two of the best selling consoles released in the last generation!

?

The PS4 is at the twilight years. There's no reason to even produce anymore. And I thought they were discontinued in at least 1 region?

I know this is probably a waste to respond to but whatever.

Yet, some devs continue to ignore it.
Because at the end of the day it being a hot seller isnt all that matters.

Curious, I’m in US can’t find any new PS4 and PS4 is done in Japan. How and where will it keep selling?

While I suspect that you may be right, if I remember well the Wii sales numbers took a pretty sharp dive when people lost interest (compared to other consoles)... The Wii still outsold all consoles from the same time frame, so maybe my comparison isn't that good, but what if it hits its wall before they surpass the PS4?

Also, many people who would have bought PS4s do get a PS5 instead (or a used PS4, but that only means that the total amount of PS4 units can't rise in the same manner).

And the switch still outsell all ps models combined. All this for Zelda, Pokemon and mario related games? Crazy times!

And yet it has maybe at most 10% of the support PS4 is getting from the major publishers.

Tells you all you need to know about this comparison being nothing more than apples and oranges.
