I miss being blown away by new-gen graphics....

Man I game on a 3090 on PC, ps5, series x, and switch.

And all of them equally still blow me away with some things. I know sometimes we set the bar for our tastes a little high, and maybe im guilty of it too, but the older I get - and the more I talk with some of yall I realize art style reigns supreme over raw power put into graphics.

Since getting this heavy ass card I been going back replaying some of my fave console games and they honestly blow me away as if I never seen em before.

Its the reason why I think if they ever released bloodborne with good customization options on PC it'd quite possibly be one of the best looking games ever made.
Bloodborne? Are you talking art style?

Honestly I rewatched the unreal 5 demo, if we get games that look like that - I will be blown away. At the time I wasn’t totally floored by it, but now seeing what we’ve gotten - I’d be gobsmacked if we reached that level. Also watching it again, Ratchet, while the best looking game shown for next gen, doesn’t look even close to that level imo.

It has equal if not better detail and lighting. It's just not a realistic art style.

I don’t see it I watched em back to back the unreal one is far, far more detailed - like down to minute little things - and I didn’t see how the lighting was better at all. Ratchet looks great but it really didn’t look close, even taking into account the cartoonish style

EDIT: I watched them both is hi res

Unreal demo didn't even have ray tracing. It was 1440p at 30fps.

It has enough to make it look better than that demo.
I don’t know what to tell you man - to say ratchet and clank looks better than the unreal 5 demo. I straight up have no idea how you could think that. I’m getting ratchet and clank but it really didn’t look in the same league to me whatsoever.

Ok well, you’re entitled to your opinion I guess. You’re gonna have problems with a lot of people if you have no idea though. The demo is generally considered better looking than ratchet and clank. But you do you. Commit to that - I’ll enjoy it when games reach that level and you can still be shouting about how ratchet and clank looked better in the first year of the ps5’s life cycle.

If games had more physics to it, that would be a good improvement.

Not every game has to be like BF with buildings blown apart, but even basic shit like doors and shit lying around in a room can be blown apart or messed with (like Half Life physics) to add to gameplay.

Doesn't even make sense when you got a shitty locked door needing a rusty key, yet your rocket launcher cant open it. Fallout is the worst. You got shabby looking wooden doors with a broken out window in it, yet you still cant get in unless you pick the lock.

That's an example of majorly canned gameplay and physics.

Did you just generalize your opinion to the whole universe? 🤭

Well RE5 was a very early game that gen, and i'm pretty sure it used the same engine as Resi 4.
There are still a lot of games though from that gen that IMO look good today at 60fps and higher resolutions. I play a lot of them on PC.

My overall point though was that we dont really get bad looking games anymore, and any game released today with some kind of budget will more often than not look good.
I have to disagree. Played RDR1 in 4k on one X. Yeah wonderful IQ, but the texture and the lighting system can't be fixed by native 4K. ps360 era was awful in terms of lighting, not just texture. Games were incredibly dark. prebaked GI is probably the biggest generational leap of the recent last generation.

I guess I just don't see how amazing Rift Apart is supposed to be. I've watched all the vids, and aside from everyone on this forum telling me how amazing it looks, I just think it looks very good. Not the huge leap that everyone is evangelizing. Same ol' gameplay too. I agree with the OP on this. I miss being blown away and not having to have dozens of people convince me something looks incredible.

This forum is a Sony jerk off echo chamber, of course everyone will tell you Ratchet and Clank looks like a game that's 2 gens away.

The reality is that the game looks par for the course graphically, it's just what I would expect from a first party attempt at new Gen, nothing about it makes my jaw hit the floor, to be honest with you, I think RE Village looks better and that's a last gen game...

How is this thread still going

Every single new gen people complain things don’t look that different. Then the actual next gen games start getting revealed.
Have some goddamn patience.
We had Ryse and Killzone SF at launch. The current games, as good as they look, aren't totally removed from what we are used to.

Exactly, the second I saw Killzone Shadowfall, I was floored. Ryse also looked like a movie at the time and I thought to myself... how is this even possible?

I think it was the PBR materials at the time that really made it look next gen. Now that we've had PBR, we're kinda used to it now.

Also, a lot of last gen games used baked GI lighting, so adding real time GI isn't going to wow us much because we've seen it, but it was baked in (I'm talking about games like TLOU2, Spider-Man, AC Unity...etc) None of those games had dynamic day/night cycles.

No expert but when it comes to baked lighting, going back you can immediately see how 'placed' it is. Still though Unity is an absolute stunner.

The problem with baked lighting is that sometimes characters almost glow because the bounce lighting and the shading isn't an exact match.

Village looks better? What are you smoking? Village looks very last gen and just a little bit better than RE7. There was absolutely nothing ground breaking about village. Looks very gamey, especially outside.

And here I am still deriving joy from my DS 😳 it must suck to depend on flashy visuals to enjoy a video game. I remember when all we had was text on a screen.

Yeah that's kind of how it feels, as if the scene is 'overcooked' to make it look more impressive than it is. Uncharted 3 is a beautiful game but even for a laymen, going back to it I could see how developers from that generation did things compared to now.

You seriously believe this is a generational leap? That's what I was talking about.
You're not going to see the benefits of this generation in screenshots. Look at the lighting, animation, physics and overall density and liveliness of the worlds to see the 'generational leap'. In terms of just polygonal detail, you probably won't see a massive leap over last generation when it comes to the primary characters, but background details will be much more impressive.

I think you're kind of overreacting, OP.

I look at this:

and it looks far better and more detailed and animated than PS4 Ratchet, which was already a highwater mark in the old "Toy Story graphics" benchmark for games... It's downright unbelievable, an interactive Pixar movie...

Btw, it's also the best Megaman 3D we never really got...

Sony, when can I find a PS5?

I’m playing the original right now and so far rift apart looks next gen, way better. Gotta see it without YouTube compression. The og has low res textures and models, the city has no life at all. Looking at the total package everything a game can deliver RDR2 and TLOU2 are next level.

I'm sorry but that's just wrong. Rift Apart looks so much more impressive on every single level even if you ignore the amazing Rift jumping aspect.

Of course it looks good/better...but the question is, are you blown away by it? No even though its a solid upgrade, its more in the details versus a new game engine making our jaws drop. Quake 2 and Quake 3 are 1 year apart and when Q3 got announced everyones jaw dropped. Thast what we are talking about, a real jump but that can not happen anymore and never will ever again.

Doom Eternal showed a similar improvement over Doom 2016 and that was while running on the same system.

Doom Eternal is like Doom 1.5 at best. It uses the same engine and has most of same enemy designs. They just changed the architecture in some levels and added a bunch of rainbow colors spurting all over the place.

Should be time still for a nice jump. I think this gen the ssd and load times are the biggest difference so far though. And the equation of frame rate and controller design.
But yes that big leap is missing, partially due to the mid generation refresh with xbix one x and ps4 pro. Take those away and start comparing to ps4 and xbox one base units running most stuff at 1080p or lower and that jump is more apparent.

Same. I need next-gen visuals in my blood right now! I don't care about 60fps.
UE5 live stream tomorrow (Wednesday, May 26th) guys!
