If you're looking to interact below the waist, please get a room.

You mean all these guys hate her looks for the sake of just beauty? Nah, they like to jerk off about stereotype female game models.

Seriously speaking, I think Aloy looks perfect for the lore and story, and might even need more armor. Games like Neir that the protagonist looks like a school girl and has a stripper outfit fighting gigantic robots and enemies usually makes me skip the game.

Make a believable character and make him/her make sense and I'm all in, whether she/he looks super beautiful or average/ugly.

Kratos looks average at best, like someone out of a garage or a plumber, but that also adds more to his savage attitude.

If he looks as girlish and skinny as fuck as most male characters in JRPG games I won't really like the game the same.

I’m with you for the most part. Selene was just a really rough face model to me. I think Aloy’s jawline just needed to be tapered in this one and it would look good. Aloy’s not ugly by any means though.

Jesus fuck, this thread is legitimately disgusting. The forced beauty standards are making me puke; it was the same ordeal as with Returnal. Just because the protagonist isn't your run-of-the-mill slut clad in spandex doesn't mean her standing as a character should suffer in any way shape or form. There are more pressing and important methods for a character to endear themselves to the player, the most prominent being the quality of writing. Are you guys weeping over the fact that Aloy doesn't meet your inequitable standards of beauty because your fear the lack of coom material on rule34? Grow the fuck up. She looks absolutely fine, and picking out the most uncharitable of frames to denigrate her doesn't serve your concerns at all. The funny thing is, I never saw any complaints about Ghost of Tsushima's Jin Sakai failing to fulfill the pretty boy aesthetic, but when it concerns a female, it suddenly becomes an issue.🤦‍♂️
"The forced beauty standards are making me puke"

Just normal concerns when realising that something is off. Especially with the face. It's an obvious thing to point out. Beauty standards aren't completely subjective either. If you have a look at the face mod for Horizon I'd argue 9/ 10 peeps would prefer the slimmer face. Don't belittle our preferences.

"her standing as a character should suffer in any way shape or form"

No one is saying her character is bad "in any way shape or form" - interesting choice of expression.

"There are more pressing and important methods for a character to endear themselves to the player, the most prominent being the quality of writing."

The face of a character is also quite prominent I'd argue. The quality of writing and appearance aren't mutually exclusive either. They can be both discussed in an open forum.

"Are you guys weeping over the fact"

You sound like you're weeping.

Is it that hard to look at the model for the character and how somehow the end result has John Cena jaw line?
It's not the beauty standard it's looking at the source material and how it ended up like a Netflix adaptation.

Yeah it's less about not looking like a supermodel and more that she looks like a cartoony guy. I mean the original model would have been alright had they changed the hair so that she didnt have Bobby Hill syndrome but it seems like they double-downed on that look purely out of spite with this new one.

They made her a bit fatter, which when added to her already big cheeks and forehead make her look a bit like:

But whatever. She looked a bit weird in one too and it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the game (except for the nighmare fuel hell spawn that was her as a kid)

Give her the same hairstyle and photograph her from same angle with the same camera lens and she'll look mostly the same. Also game models in general look worse than the real thing in most cases if not modified. With this the facial expressions are perfect in this latest game.

Women with pulled hair to the back and a screenshot from a video usually doesn't look as beautiful as with released hair, make up, and photographic pose.

I agree, but the jawline is definitely off from the model and that is imo what is the biggest problem with it. She wouldn’t look as “fat” if they slimmed the jawline. It’s a problem with character models though. I was trying to create a Demon’s Souls model that looked like me. In some ways I was close, but I couldn’t get a sharp enough jawline without making him too slight of frame.

The real actress has a bigger jawline than me though, and I think it's near identical to the game minus the hairstyle covering it.

The cheeks under the cheekbones are too far out because the mouth is bigger. The jawline from the chin is less tapered on her right side than the model. The cheekbones might be the problem, everything beneath them is bigger than the models because they are too pronounced. They are definitely fuller than the model. I agree that dropping her hair down would help, but they didn’t quite nail the proportions.

Let me explain it to you. From a photographic point of view it's always better to use zoom lenses, so you see that 70-200mm lenses are the most famous lenses for portrait. Getting closer to the character and with some lenses you might get weird results. And from what I know the character is usually surrounded with many cameras up close.

Now if the guy behind modeling doesn't know shit on how to correct the model properly post modeling shoot out then you might find the final model looking a bit off, especially if the lens distortion is there in most lenses that aren't the most premium ones.

Forms-of-lens-distortion-original-barrel-lens-distortion-pincushion-lens-distortion.png

Also distortion isn't necessarily in parallel and could have weird spots across the image due to having several lenses inside:

From both sessions I think the cameras should be pushed back all the way across the room then zoomed in at 200mm to have the best results.

238mm focal length on the left vs 20mm focal length to the right

There isn't any nuance when it comes to subjectivity or objectivity. It's either subjective or it isn't. Nothing is 'off' about Aloy. I'm not belittling your preferences either, I'm discarding its relevancy in its entirety.
No one is saying her character is bad "in any way shape or form" - interesting choice of expression dude.
They are, in an extremely cowardly, thinly-veiled way - snarkily comparing Aloy to JRPG females as if the latter is more palatable by the sole virtue of their explicit, licentious appearances. Tell me, did GoT's Jin Sakai get any threads like this because he wasn't some bewitching Greek adonis like Mass Effect's protagonist or some husky, grizzled hunk like Geralt? We never begrudge male protagonists for not being hot, but it's always a problem for females. It's disgusting.

No, the face isn't as important as the writing. I won't argue that a conventionally pretty face hooks some players in - as is evident from this thread - but for the retention of that interest, good writing is dozens of times more important. No one liked Rey's character from Star Wars, despite her more-than-good looks.
You sound like you're weeping dude.
Over the blatant misogyny in this thread? Sure. I'm not afraid to admit that.

Go for the features piece by piece and you'll understand.
- The mouth is bigger
- Eyebrows are higher and also thicker
- Bigger nose.
- Wider jaw.

Sadly I don't have the time to do an edit and isolate the actress hair, but even without doing so, the difference is night and day to me.

AND I call BS on the graphics since we have Until Dawn as an example from last gen. We have the power of PS5 now, this is purely agenda BS. The game counterpart looks different, but the actress features were not changed.

Maybe they made the mouth bigger for animation reasons.

shes good ..when serious

but then when talks

I mean, she just doesn't look good here - kind of fat-faced with a bad haircut and pretty thick peach fuzz.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they did it on purpose to make her look less attractive - liberals think they're being terribly progressive when they make women less hot. And the original HZD's story was already so glaringly woke and feminist if you stop to think about it's kind of ridiculous: a horrible white man (of course) causes the literal apocalypse because he betrayed the smartest most perfect woman ever and her loyal rainbow flag coalition of scientists. And the woman then reincarnates herself as a savior for the new world who goes around rescuing kings and giving them lectures for hitting on her.

Every male character in the game is totally useless and subservient except for Rost - and the whole first part of the game with Rost feels like it was tacked on just to give a bit of balance to the storyline as it has no real reason to be there and it doesn't end up tying back in to the story in any way.

LMAO was that the story? I skipped a lot of the cut scenes in the quest for the plat and just enjoyed the eye candy.

Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem with the big brain, thread ending, take.

Also I have a question for the thread. Was Aloy's beauty ever discussed in the first game? If not, why can't we have average looking people as protagonists?

All of these advancements in wrinkles, spots, and facial flaws in game development and GDC presentations, and yet people still prefer flawless filtered Instagram model faces. Really makes one think :pie_thinking:
