Horizon has managed to impress despite being cross gen. I was going to compare it against Far Cry 6 and Dying Light 2, both were revealed yesterday, both are cross gen, but it wasn't even close.

Comparing it to next gen only games like Demon Souls and Ratchet seemed fair.

I think they all look pretty much on par with each other, but I'd give Horizon the edge for being open world.

There are other next gen only games out there like that chinese kung fu game Black Tusk, Square Enix's Project Athia/Forspoken and the korean RPG Crimson Desert. Since the OP already has enough gifs, I am going to skip them for now, but feel free to post anymore comparisons.

Having played Demon's Souls I wasn't that impressed, to be honest. I played it in 1440p 60 FPS mode of course since the 30fps mode is choppy for whatever reason and I think Miles Morales is the better-looking launch title, to be honest. The 1440P vs native 4k is really noticeable to me. I'd put Ratchet over both though for sure.

To be fair, some of those GIFs have filters on them. I would try to get the raw footage unaltered for people to get a quick glance at.

My order of visual showcase:

1) Ratchet
2) Forbidden West
3) Demon Souls

Imo forbidden West, but it's stylistic, i think r&c would look better if they had the same interest in fantastical realism

Edit; I'm willing to bet there'll be some pretty hot cyberpunk setting gameplay in r&c

1) Horizon FW

it’s simply the complete package. Best in-game model I’ve ever seen combined with fantastic lighting and animation makes it look like a stylized CG movie.

the world is huge, richly detailed, and full of small touches everywhere. The enemy designs are magnificent and really bring this world to life in ways only video games can.

2) Ratchet

Close second. It’s a Pixar movie brought to us in real time. Phenomenally rich detail, with huge scale but not quite as open as H:FW. It does have some benefits over horizon, I think the image quality is a bit cleaner, makes full use of the SSD, and features next gen ray tracing.

3) Demons Souls

Great launch game but it is kind of 1.5x last gen rather than full next gen. Everything looks good, but given how small the environments are they could have pushed the level of detail much, much higher. I expect late gen games that are linear (such as ND) to be a generational leap from this. But it is no small feat to launch a game like this for next gen in less than 3 years.

I think RE8 looks better than DS overall and would be number 3 for me. The interiors simply look stunning.

That's a very tough one. All the games looks so good each for their own taste. But Horizon has the looks of more beautiful world simulation. The characters model and facial expression is better than the other 2. So i will go with HW FW for now.

Overall I think horizon looks the most impressive sure to it's art direction, but parts of ratchet look better.

Demons is a step below, but still one of the best at realism.

It's horizon for me.

Demons has nice enviromental textures everywhere but humans and creatures are good\great but hardly mindblowing, also animations are so so.

Ratchet has that pixar movie look but imo that is the easiest style to achieve, ratchet remake on ps4 already looked a lot like the ratchet movie, kena has the same look with a much smaller budget\team.

Horizon takes the cake, it looks like a noticeable jump from the first one in a lot of things (not everything tho) and the fact that it is a crossgen and open world make everything more impressive.

I posted some high quality screens of ratchet ps4 in one of the topics where people were jerking off over ratchet ps5 screens and received like almost 10 likes because nobody even noticed the difference, you can't do that trick with horizon 2.

All running at 30fps yeah?

The humans looking more like Demons than the actual demons with the surreal facial features aside my first pick would have to be demon souls for the realism plus it can run 60fps with only compromising the resolution) But R&C is a very close second and Horizon 2 still looks amazingly good in its own right

but tbf, I would prefer to play the latter two before I make a full judgement

Ratchet and Clank is miles ahead for me. Go look at the 4K footage and find me some bad looking frames, I bet you struggle. You might argue that cartoon aesthetic is easier sure but the end result is astonishing.

Horizon has lots of shimmering, really obvious upscaling artifacts, everything clips into everything else (the hair spends 99% of its time inside the weapons or even Aloy’s own neck), it has pop-in especially the foliage, low quality textures on the armour. It still looks great and a big jump over the first but one look will tell you it’s a game while Ratchet looks like nothing I’ve seen rendered in real time before.

DS I’ve not looked into much to be honest as I knew I wouldn’t buy it so won’t comment there.

Sadly the gameplay presentation of HFW had more inconsisentcies and artifacts then R&C therefore my pick would be R&C.

I will play both games though so I might change my mind once those games have been released and I got to play them.

technically .. Horizon /sandbox/ > Ratchet /corridor/ > DS /corridor/
art .. choose wisely.

All of them has past-gen legacy archaic gameplay design, nothing next gen. Run, jump, kill, fetch. Static enviro, dumb AI.

Next gen but not on PS5. No 60fps, no REAL next-gen.

"Lumen's Global Illumination and Reflections primary shipping target is to support large, open worlds running at 60 frames per second (fps) on next-generation consoles. The engine's high scalability level contains settings for Lumen targeting 60 fps." - docs.unrealengine.com

its just an engine, there will be even better ones.

Low resolution and 30fps means Horizon comes in last. It looks great, sure, but these factors make it feel less next gen.

Torn between DS and R&C. DS has more detailed models and environments, whereas R&C has RT effects and some really nice cartoon art direction.

HFW is an upscaled last-gen game with obvious limitations, we had a taste of that with HZD on PC already, so I'm not impressed by it at all.

So from the three my pick goes to R&C, I'm positive that as the time will pass that's the one that will hold well, 5 years from now it'll still be just as good looking as it is today, whereas DS, let alone HFW will clearly be dated.

UE5 recent demo is last gen as well then.

Horizon impressed me the most primarily because of the intensity and nonstop action. All three are spectacular though and I don't need to choose. I'll just play them all and enjoy the vast array of truly next gen experiences Sony has blessed us with. 😁😁😁

I’ll say Horizon Forbidden West because it’s so far the only one I said ”it can’t look this good, this is just a trailer” when we saw the announcement and then went ”yeah ok, fuck, it does looks like the trailer” when we saw gameplay.

R&C will probably feel more next gen due to all its crazy portal jumping and Demon’s Souls feels like the perfect next gen game due to me loving the series, but only Horizon FW had that effect on me when it comes to the graphics.

Demon souls doesn't look impressive to me.

Horizon is more impressive because its open world but limitations are visible everywhere, what they really do well is actually use some fucking colors in a open world game, unlike most games these days.
R&C looks better, but limited scope.

3 completely different games, with different artistic targets. You just can't compare or choose between them.
Every one of these games have different flavors and usages of the next gen hardware, all of them are next gen.

This is... ridiculously hard.

I mean, Ratchet has that animation/cartoon art style to it. It's always going to look clean, it looked clean in 2016.

I'd have to give it to Horizon. Animation/Cartoon art styles don't scream "next gen" to me on their own.
